Paleogene calcareous nannofossils from split spoon cores recovered from five wells along the Coastal Plain of New Jersey and Maryland have been analyzed in order to provide onshore information complementary to that derived from the offshore DSDP Site 605 (upper continental rise off New Jersey). Hiatuses are more numerous and of greater extent in the onshore sections, but the major ones correlate well with those noted in the offshore section. At one site at least (Leggett Well), sedimentation may well have been continuous across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary, as it is believed to have been at DSDP Site 605. These various correlations are discussed elsewhere in a companion paper (Olsson and Wise, this volume). Important differences in nannofossil assemblages are noted between the onshore (shelf paleoenvironment) and offshore (slope-rise paleoenvironment) sections. Lithostromation simplex, not present offshore, is consistently present onshore and seems to be confined to the Eocene shelf sediments of this region. The same relationship holds for the zonal marker, Rhabdosphaera gladius Locker. The Rhomboaster-Tribrachiatus plexus is more diverse and better preserved in the onshore sections, where the lowermost Eocene Zone CP9 is well represented. Differential preservation is postulated to account for two morphotypes of Tribrachiatus bramlettei (Brönnimann and Stradner). Type A is represented at DSDP Site 605 by individuals with short, stubby arms, but these forms are not present in the equivalent onshore sections. There they are replaced by the Type B morphotypes, which exhibit a similar basic construction but possess much longer, more delicate arms.

These results were obtained by Russian specialists and together with Indian specialists during 15 years of cooperation in investigation of geological structure and mineral resources of the Indian Ocean. Sediment deformation features in CRP-2/2A were described during normal logging procedures and from core-scan images. In this paper the origin of soft-sediment folding, contorted bedding, microfaulting, clastic dykes, shear zones and intraformational breccias is discussed. The features have a stratigraphic distribution related to major unconformities and sequence boundaries. Hypotheses for the origins of sediment deformation include hydrofracturing, subglacial shearing, slumping, and gas hydrate formation. Shear zones, microfaults, clastic dykes and contorted bedding within rapidly deposited sediments, suggest that slumping in an ice-distal environment occurred in the early Oligocene. A till wedge beneath a diamictite at 364 mbsf the mid-Oligocene section represents the oldest evidence of grounded ice in CRP-2/2A. Shear zones with a subglacial origin in the early late Oligocene and early Miocene sections of the core are evidence of further grounding events. The interpretation of sediment deformation in CRP-2/2A is compared to other Antarctic stratigraphic records and global eustatic change between the late Eocenel/early Oligocene and the middle Miocene.

A major deterioration in global climate occurred through the Eocene-Oligocene time interval, characterized by long-term cooling in both terrestrial and marine environments. During this long-term cooling trend, however, recent studies have documented several short-lived warming and cooling phases. In order to further investigate high-latitude climate during these events, we developed a high-resolution calcareous nannofossil record from ODP Site 748 Hole B for the interval spanning the late middle Eocene to the late Oligocene (~42 to 26 Ma). The primary goals of this study were to construct a detailed biostratigraphic record and to use nannofossil assemblage variations to interpret short-term changes in surface-water temperature and nutrient conditions. The principal nannofossil assemblage variations are identified using a temperate-warm-water taxa index (Twwt), from which three warming and five cooling events are identified within the middle Eocene to the earliest Oligocene interval. Among these climatic trends, the cooling event at ~39 Ma (Cooling Event B) is recorded here for the first time. Variations in fine-fraction d18O values at Site 748 are associated with changes in the Twwt index, supporting the idea that significant short-term variability in surface-water conditions occurred in the Kerguelen Plateau area during the middle and late Eocene. Furthermore, ODP Site 748 calcareous nannofossil paleoecology confirms the utility of these microfossils for biostratigraphic, paleoclimatic, and paleoceanographic reconstructions at Southern Ocean sites during the Paleogene.

The clay mineral assemblages of upper Eocene to lower Miocene sediments recovered at the CIROS-1 and MSSTS-1 drill sites on the McMurdo Sound shelf, Antarctica, were analyzed in order to reconstruct the Cenozoic Antarctic paleoclimate and ice dynamics. The assemblages are dominated by smectite and illite, with minor amounts of chlorite and kaolinite. The highest smectite amounts and best smectite crystallinities occur in the upper Eocene part of CIROS-1, below 425-445 mbsf. They indicate that during their deposition, chemical weathering conditions prevailed on the nearby continent. Large parts of East Antarctica were probably ice-free at that time, but some glaciers reached the sea and contributed to the glaciomarine sedimentation. In contrast, only minor total amounts of smectite are present in Oligocene and younger sediments due to the shift to mainly physical weathering on an ice-covered Antarctic continent. However, relative smectite percentages rise to more than 60% during two late Oligocene intervals (ca. 27.5-26.2 and 25.0-24.5 Ma) and during one early Miocene interval starting at ca. 23.3 Ma. These intervals are characterized by ice masses coming probably from the south, where volcanic rocks acted as a source, as also indicated by the composition of the sand and gravel fractions. During the other intervals, the ice came from the west, where the physical erosion of basement rocks and sedimentary rocks of the Beacon Supergroup in the Transantarctic Mountains provided high illite concentrations. Because the two drill sites are only 4 km apart, their clay mineral records can be correlated. This led to a new interpretation of the Oligocene paleomagnetic data of the MSSTS-1 site and to a more detailed lithostratigraphic correlation of the Miocene parts of the cores.

Paleogene stable oxygen and carbon isotopes were measured in formainifera from ODP Sites 689 and 690 at Maud Rise in the Atlantic Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean, and from Sites 738, 744, 748 and 749 at the southern Kerguelen Plateau in the Indian Ocean sector. These data were compared with sedimentological data from the same sample set. Both benthic and planktic d18O values document a cooling trend beginning around 49.5 Ma at all sites. During the late middle Eocene planktic d18O values indicate a steepening latitudinal temperature gradient from 14°C at the northern sites towards 10°C at the southernmost sites. Terrigeneous sand grains of probably ice rafted origin and clay mineral assemblages point to the existence of a limited East Antarctic ice cap with some glaciers reaching sea level as early as middle Eocene time around 45.5 Ma. Between 45 and 40 Ma, average paleotemperatures were between 5° and 7°C in deep and intermediate water masses, while near-surface water masses ranged between 6° and 10°C. During the late Eocene, between 40 and 36 Ma, average temperatures further decreased to 4°-5°C in the deep and intermediate water masses and to 5°-8°C near the sea surface. Abruptly increasing d18O values at approximately 35.9 Ma exactly correlate with a sharp pulse in the deposition of ice-rafted material on the Kerguelen Plateau, a dramatic change in clay mineral composition, and an altered Southern Ocean circulation indicated by a differentiation of benthic d13C values between sites, increasing opal concentrations and decreasing carbonate contents. For planktic and benthic foraminifera this d18O increase ranges between 1.0 and 1.3 per mil, and between 0.9 and 1.4 per mil, respectively. We favour a hypothesis that explains most of the d18O shift at 35.9 Ma with a buildup of a continental East Antarctic ice sheet. Consequently, relatively warm Oligocene Antarctic surface water temperatures probably are explained by a temperate, wet-based nature of the ice sheet. This would also aid in the fast build-up of an ice sheet by enhancing the moisture transport on to the continent.

During Leg 41 Neogene sediments were recovered from five sites off northwest Africa. On the Sierra Leone Rise (Site 366), Neogene sediments consist of nanno oozes, nanno chalk, and calcareous clays 230 meters thick, resting conformably on the late Oligocene sediments. The common succession of zones occurs with two hiatuses. The lower gap corresponds to an interval around the lower/middle Miocene boundary (the Praeorbulina glomerosa and Orbulina suturalis-Globorotalia peri-pheroronda zones are absent) and the upper gap coincides with an interval around the middle/upper Miocene boundary (the Sphaeroidinellopsis sub-dehiscens-GIobigerina druryi, Globigerina nepenthes-Globorotalia siakensis and Globorotalia conlinuosa zones are missing). In the Cape Verde Basin (Site 367) deep-water Neogene turbidites (about 200-250 m thick) contain poor fauna of redeposited and sorted Cretaceous, Eocene, Oligocene, and Neogene species. On the Cape Verde Rise (Site 368) the Neogene section starts with slightly calcareous and non-calcareous clays with poor planktonic foraminifers of the lower Miocene. Later on this area was uplifted and clayey sediments have been replaced upsection in order by more shallow-water clayey nanno and nanno-foraminifer oozes and marls and pure calcareous oozes. In the middle Miocene, planktonic foraminifers are still not diverse, but since the level of the Globigerina nepenthes-Globorotalia siakensis Zone, almost all Neogene zones have been traced. The minimum thickness of the Neogene sediments is about 230 meters. On the continental slope off Spanish Sahara (Site 369) monotonous calcareous pelagic sediments of Neogene age (164 m thick) overlie the late Oligocene comformably, or with a small time gap. A set of zones beginning from the Globigerinoides primordis-Globorotaiia kugleri Zone up to the Globorotalia fohsi fohsi Zone has been revealed with a gap corresponding to the Globigerinita stainforthi and the Globigerinatella insueta-Globigerinoides irilobus zones. Above that follow sediments with heterogeneous microfauna which result from redeposition or mixing of sediments during drilling. The section ends with sediments of the late Miocene and lower Pliocene with abundant planktonic foraminifers. The latter are unconformably overlain by the Quaternary ooze. In the Morocco basin (Site 370) deep-water marls and calcareous clays of the lower Miocene contain poor assemblages of planktonic foraminifers. The middle and upper Miocene are represented by turbidites (alternation of nanno oozes, clays, siltstones, and sands) with heterogeneous microfauna. Total thickness of Neogene is up to 200 meters. In general the Neogene foraminifer microfauna of the area studied includes the majority of species which developed within the tropical-subtropical belt. The entire succession of the Miocene and Pliocene foraminifer zones occurs. The only exclusion is the Sphaeroidinellopsis subdehiscens-Globigerina druryi Zone of the middle Miocene. The distribution of species is shown on three tables. Comments are given for 47 species and subspecies of foraminifers (stratigraphic ranges, peculiarities of morphology, and ultrastructure of the shell wall).

Sponge spicules found in Eocene, Oligocene, and middle Miocene sediments at DSDP Leg 71 Sites 511,512, and 513 belong to two classes; Hyalospongiae and Demospongiae. On the basis of spicule types and stratigraphic characteristics, spicule assemblages are distinguished for the lower and upper units of the middle Eocene, the upper Eocene, the lower Oligocene, the lower and upper units of the upper Oligocene, and the middle Miocene. In addition, 23 types and 76 dimensional varieties of spicules are described.

Eocene through Quaternary planktonic foraminifers were identified in cores recovered during Leg 126. Turbidites and volcanic ash beds are intercalated with hemipelagic sediments. Preservation of foraminifers is variable, ranging from excellent to poor and appears to have been affected by fluctuations in the carbonate compensation depth (CCD), depth of burial, changes in bottom water temperature, current velocity, sediment accumulation rates and seafloor topography. Preservation of foraminifers in Quaternary sediments is generally good, however, species abundance varies by a factor of I05-106 and reflects dilution by volcanogenic as well as terrigenous constituents and cannot be used for paleoceanographic reconstructions. In pre-Quaternary deposits planktonic foraminiferal tests frequently exhibit dissolution effects; biostratigraphic zonation and placement of zonal boundaries is difficult owing to hiatuses, dissolution facies, extraneously deposited sediments, and discontinuous coring. The Eocene foraminiferal faunas include specimens of the Globorotalia cerroazulensis plexus, markers of Zone P16 as well as Globigerina senni and Globigerinatheka spp., which became extinct before the end of the Eocene. Six hiatuses and/or dissolution periods, probably reflecting global cooling events and/or changes in oceanic circulation patterns were recorded at Site 792. Recrystallized, poorly preserved, possibly reworked Eocene species (Globigerina senni and Globigerapsis sp.) were recorded in sediments at Site 793.

Over most of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean a hiatus is present between the lower upper Maastrichtian and lowermost Tertiary deposits; sedimentation resumed ~200 ka (upper zone Pla) after the K-T boundary. Current-bedded volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Sites 536 and 540, which were previously interpreted as impact-generated megawave deposits of K-T boundary age, are biostratigraphically of pre-K-T boundary age and probably represent turbidite or gravity-How deposits. The top 10 to 20 cm of this deposit at Site 536 contains very rare Micula prinsii, the uppermost Maastrichtian index taxon, as well as low values of Ir (0.6 pbb) and rare Ni-rich spinels. These indicate possible reworking of sediments of K-T boundary age at the hiatus. Absence of continuous sediment accumulation across the K-T boundary in the 16 Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean sections examined prevents their providing evidence of impact-generated megawave deposits in this region. Our study indicates that the most complete trans-K-T stratigraphic records may be found in onshore marine sections of Mexico, Cuba, and Haiti. The stratigraphic records of these areas should be investigated further for evidence of impact deposits.

We report an optimized method for extracting neodymium (Nd) from fossil fish teeth with a single-stage column (125 µl stem volume; LN Resin, Eichrom Industries, Darien Illinois) for isotopic analysis by multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC-ICMPS). Three reference materials (basalt: BCR-2, BHVO-2; phosphate: fossil bone composite) and splits of fossil fish teeth samples previously processed with existing two-stage column methods were processed using the single-stage column method. 143Nd/144Nd values of reference materials agree within error with published values, and the values for fish teeth correspond with sample splits processed with two-stage columns. Precision to ± ~0.23 epsilon-Nd was achieved for 30 ng Nd samples of reference materials, and Nd isotope measurements of fossil fish tooth sample replicates as small as 7 ng Nd were reproducible within long term instrumental uncertainty. We demonstrate the utility of the new method with the first high resolution Nd isotope record spanning the ~40.0 Ma middle Eocene Climatic Optimum, which shows an excursion of 0.65 epsilon-Nd during the peak warming at the study site (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 119, Site 738; 30 kyr sample spacing from 40.3 to 39.6 Ma). LN Resin is already used in standard methods for separating Nd, and Nd isotopes are routinely measured by MC-ICPMS with high efficiency inlet systems. Our innovation is a single, small volume LN Resin column for Nd separation. The streamlined approach results in a 10X increase in sample throughput.

The Middle Eocene diatom and silicoflagellate record of ODP Site 1260A (Demerara Rise) is studied quantitatively in order to throw light on the changes that siliceous phytoplankton communities experienced during a Middle Eocene warming event that occurred between 44.0 and 42.0 Ma. Both Pianka's overlap index, calculated per couple of successive samples, and cluster analysis, point to a number of significant turnover events highlighted by changes in the structure of floristic communities. The pre-warming flora, dominated by cosmopolitan species of the diatom genus Triceratium, is replaced during the warming interval by a new and more diverse assemblage, dominated by Paralia sulcata (an indicator of high productivity) and two endemic tropical species of the genus Hemiaulus. The critical warming interval is characterized by a steady increase in biogenic silica and a comparable increase in excess Ba, both reflecting an increase in productivity. In general, it appears that high productivity not only increased the flux of biogenic silica, but also sustained a higher diversity in the siliceous phytoplankton communities. The microflora preserved above the critical interval is once again of low diversity and dominated by various species of the diatom genus Hemiaulus. All assemblages in the studied material are characterized by the total absence of continental and benthic diatoms and the relative abundance of neritic forms, suggesting a transitional depositional environment between the neritic and the oceanic realms.

During Leg 110 of the Ocean Drilling Program, sediment was recovered from six sites in the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles Forearc. Hole 671B, drilled near the toe of the Barbados deformation front, was the first-ever penetration of the decollement between the underthrusting Atlantic Plate and the off scraped Barbados accretionary prism. Stratigraphic repetitions in sequence associated with tectonic movement along the decollement zone, first observed on DSDP Leg 78A, were further documented at four ODP Leg 110 sites. A significant biostratigraphic inversion is present at Site 671 at 128 mbsf in which upper Miocene sediments rest atop lower Pleistocene strata. Smaller repetitions in sequence are recorded at Sites 671, 673, 674, and 676. Leg 110 sediments range from middle Eocene to early Pleistocene in age. Pliocene/Pleistocene assemblages are generally well preserved; however, Miocene assemblages have undergone extensive dissolution at all Leg 110 sites. Paleogene sediments are sometimes recrystallized and the nannofossils contained within exhibit a range in preservation from poor to good.
