Observations of surface flow patterns of steel and aluminum GTAW pools have been made using a pulsed laser visualization system. The weld pool convection is found to be three-dimensional with the azimuthal circulation depending on the location of the clamp with respect to the torch. Oscillation of steel pools and undulating motion in aluminum weld pools are also observed even with steady process parameters. Current axisymmetric numerical models are unable to explain such phenomena. A three-dimensional computational study is carried out in this study to explain the rotational flow in aluminum weld pools.

A high speed photographic technique has been employed to measure the Sauter mean diameter of bubbles experimentally in a gas liquid ejector using a sodium chloride-air system. The measured values are compared with the theoretically predicted maximum bubble size diameter using Sprow's correlation. Bubble size as a function of the liquid flow rate and also of its distance from the throat of the ejector has been reported in this paper. The results obtained for this non-reactive system are also compared with those obtained earlier for the air-water system.

A fuzzy logic intelligent system is developed for gas-turbine fault isolation. The gas path measurements used for fault isolation are exhaust gas temperature, low and high rotor speed, and fuel flow. These four measurements are also called the cockpit parameters and are typically found in almost all older and newer jet engines. The fuzzy logic system uses rules developed from a model of performance influence coefficients to isolate engine faults while accounting for uncertainty in gas path measurements. It automates the reasoning process of an experienced powerplant engineer. Tests with simulated data show that the fuzzy system isolates faults with an accuracy of 89% with only the four cockpit measurements. However, if additional pressure and temperature probes between the compressors and before the burner, which are often found in newer jet engines, are considered, the fault isolation accuracy rises to as high as 98%. In addition, the additional sensors are useful in keeping the fault isolation system robust as quality of the measured data deteriorates.

This paper presents a prototype of a fuzzy system for alleviation of network overloads in the day-to-day operation of power systems. The control used for overload alleviation is real power generation rescheduling. Generation Shift Sensitivity Factors (GSSF) are computed accurately, using a more realistic operational load flow model. Overloading of lines and sensitivity of controlling variables are translated into fuzzy set notations to formulate the relation between overloading of line and controlling ability of generation scheduling. A fuzzy rule based system is formed to select the controllers, their movement direction and step size. Overall sensitivity of line loading to each of the generation is also considered in selecting the controller. Results obtained for network overload alleviation of two modified Indian power networks of 24 bus and 82 bus with line outage contingencies are presented for illustration purposes.

A careful study of the existing literature available in the field of cavitation reveals the potential of ultrasonics as a tool for controlling and, if possible, eliminating certain types of hydrodynamic cavitation through the manipulation of nuclei size present in a flow. A glass venturi is taken to be an ideal device to study the cavitation phenomenon at its throat and its potential control. A piezoelectric transducer, driven at the crystal resonant frequency, is used to generate an acoustic pressure field and is termed an ultrasonic nuclei manipulator (UNM). Electrolysis bubbles serve as artificial nuclei to produce travelling bubble cavitation at the venturi throat in the absence of a UNM but this cavitation is completely eliminated when a UNM is operative. This is made possible because the nuclei, which pass through the acoustic field first, cavitate, collapse violently and perhaps fragment and go into dissolution before reaching the venturi throat. Thus, the potential nuclei for travelling bubble cavitation at the venturi throat seem to be systematically destroyed through acoustic cavitation near the UNM. From the solution to the bubble dynamics equation, it has been shown that the potential energy of a bubble at its maximum radius due to an acoustic field is negligible compared to that for the hydrodynamic field. Hence, even though the control of hydrodynamic macro cavitation achieved in this way is at the expense of acoustic micro cavitation, it can still be considered to be a significant gain. These are some of the first results in this direction.

It has been well recognized now that the blast furnace aerodynamics can be represented more accurately under the decreasing gas velocity condition. Therefore, gas-fines study has been carried out in a packed bed under the decreasing gas velocity condition. Gas and fines flow equations have been developed and solved, for two-dimensional case using finite volume method. To take into account the turbulence, k-e turbulent flow model has also been developed in two-dimension. The model's predictions have been validated against the published experimental data for the increasing gas velocity case, as no experimental data are available in open literature for the decreasing gas velocity. This study shows the difference in the results for increasing and decreasing gas velocity cases under various conditions which have been reported here. Implication of the results to the blast furnace condition has also been discussed.

Numerical modeling of several turbulent nonreacting and reacting spray jets is carried out using a fully stochastic separated flow (FSSF) approach. As is widely used, the carrier-phase is considered in an Eulerian framework, while the dispersed phase is tracked in a Lagrangian framework following the stochastic separated flow (SSF) model. Various interactions between the two phases are taken into account by means of two-way coupling. Spray evaporation is described using a thermal model with an infinite conductivity in the liquid phase. The gas-phase turbulence terms are closed using the k-epsilon model. A novel mixture fraction based approach is used to stochastically model the fluctuating temperature and composition in the gas phase and these are then used to refine the estimates of the heat and mass transfer rates between the droplets and the surrounding gas-phase. In classical SSF (CSSF) methods, stochastic fluctuations of only the gas-phase velocity are modeled. Successful implementation of the FSSF approach to turbulent nonreacting and reacting spray jets is demonstrated. Results are compared against experimental measurements as well as with predictions using the CSSF approach for both nonreacting and reacting spray jets. The FSSF approach shows little difference from the CSSF predictions for nonreacting spray jets but differences are significant for reacting spray jets. In general, the FSSF approach gives good predictions of the flame length and structure but further improvements in modeling may be needed to improve the accuracy of some details of the Predictions. Based on the an earlier CFD analysis of the performance of the gas-dynamically controlled laser cavity [1]it was found that there is possibility of optimizing the geometry of the diffuser that can bring about reductions in both size and cost of the system by examining the critical dimensional requirements of the diffuser. Consequently,an extensive CFD analysis has been carried out for a range of diffuser configurations by simulating the supersonic flow through the arrangement including the laser cavity driven by a bank of converging – diverging nozzles and the diffuser. The numerical investigations with 3D-RANS code are carried out to capture the flow patterns through diffusers past the cavity that has multiple supersonic jet interactions with shocks leading to complex flow pattern. Varying length of the diffuser plates is made to be the basic parameter of the study. The analysis reveals that the pressure recovery pattern during the flow through the diffuser from the simulation, being critical for the performance of the laser device shows its dependence on the diffuser length is weaker beyond a critical lower limit and this evaluation of this limit would provide a design guideline for a more efficient system configuration. The observation based on the parametric study shows that the pressure recovery transients in the near vicinity of the cavity is not affected for the reduction in the length of the diffuser plates up to its 10% of the initial size, indicating the design in the first configuration that was tested experimentally has a large factor of margin. The flow stability in the laser cavity is found to be unaffected since a strong and stable shock is located at the leading edge of the diffuser plates while the downstream shock and flow patterns are changed, as one would expect. Results of the study for the different lengths of diffusers in the range of 10% to its full length are presented, keeping the experimentally tested configuration used in the earlier study [1] as the reference length. The conclusions drawn from the analysis is found to be of significance since it provides new design considerations based on the understanding of the intricacies of the flow, allowing for a hardware optimization that can lead to substantial size reduction of the device with no loss of performance.

Compiler optimizations need precise and scalable analyses to discover program properties. We propose a partially flow-sensitive framework that tries to draw on the scalability of flow-insensitive algorithms while providing more precision at some specific program points. Provided with a set of critical nodes — basic blocks at which more precise information is desired — our partially flow-sensitive algorithm computes a reduced control-flow graph by collapsing some sets of non-critical nodes. The algorithm is more scalable than a fully flow-sensitive one as, assuming that the number of critical nodes is small, the reduced flow-graph is much smaller than the original flow-graph. At the same time, a much more precise information is obtained at certain program points than would had been obtained from a flow-insensitive algorithm.

In arriving at the ideal filter transfer function for an active noise control system in a duct, the effect of the auxiliary sources (generally loudspeakers) on the waves generated by the primary source has invariably been neglected in the existing literature, implying a rigid wall or infinite impedance. The present paper presents a fairly general analysis of a linear one-dimensional noise control system by means of block diagrams and transfer functions. It takes into account the passive as well as active role of a terminal primary source, wall-mounted auxiliary source, open duct radiation impedance, and the effects of mean flow and damping. It is proved that the pressure generated by a source against a load impedance can be looked upon as a sum of two pressure waves, one generated by the source against an anechoic termination and the other by reflecting the rearward wave (incident on the source) off the passive source impedance. Application of this concept is illustrated for both the types of sources. A concise closed-form expression for the ideal filter transfer function is thus derived and discussed. Finally, the dynamics of an adaptive noise control system is discussed briefly, relating its standing-wave variables and transfer functions with those of the progressive-wave model presented here.

The storage capacity of an activated carbon bed is studied using a 2D transport model with constant inlet flow conditions. The predicted filling times and variation in bed pressure and temperature are in good agreement with experimental observations obtained using a 1.82 L prototype ANG storage cylinder. Storage efficiencies based on the maximum achievable V/V (volume of gas/volume of container) and filling times are used to quantify the performance of the charging process. For the high permeability beds used in the experiments, storage efficiencies are controlled by the rate of heat removal. Filling times, defined as the time at which the bed pressure reaches 3.5 MPa, range from 120 to 3.4 min for inlet flow rates of 1.0 L min(-1) and 30.0 L min(-1), respectively. The corresponding storage efficiencies, eta(s), vary from 90% to 76%, respectively. Simulations with L/D ratios ranging from 0.35 to 7.8 indicate that the storage efficiencies can be improved with an increase in the LID ratios and/or with water cooled convection. Thus for an inlet flow rate of 30.0 L min(-1), an eta(s) value of 90% can be obtained with water cooling for an L/D ratio of 7.8 and a filling time of a few minutes. In the absence of water cooling the eta(s) value reduces to 83% at the same L/D ratio. Our study suggests that with an appropriate choice of cylinder dimensions, solutions based on convective cooling during adsorptive storage are possible with some compromise in the storage capacity.

We investigate the variation of the gas and the radiation pressure in accretion disks during the infall of matter to the black hole and its effect to the flow. While the flow far away from the black hole might be non-relativistic, in the vicinity of the black hole it is expected to be relativistic behaving more like radiation. Therefore, the ratio of gas pressure to total pressure (beta) and the underlying polytropic index (gamma) should not be constant throughout the flow. We obtain that accretion flows exhibit significant variation of beta and then gamma, which affects solutions described in the standard literature based on constant beta. Certain solutions for a particular set of initial parameters with a constant beta do not exist when the variation of beta is incorporated appropriately. We model the viscous sub-Keplerian accretion disk with a nonzero component of advection and pressure gradient around black holes by preserving the conservations of mass, momentum, energy, supplemented by the evolution of beta. By solving the set of five coupled differential equations, we obtain the thermo-hydrodynamical properties of the flow. We show that during infall, beta of the flow could vary up to similar to 300%, while gamma up to similar to 20%. This might have a significant impact to the disk solutions in explaining observed data, e.g. super-luminal jets from disks, luminosity, and then extracting fundamental properties from them. Hence any conclusion based on constant gamma and beta should be taken with caution and corrected. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper studies were carried out on two compact electric discharge plasma sources for controlling nitrogen oxides (NOX) emission in diesel engine exhaust. The plasma sources consist of an old television flyback transformer to generate high frequency high voltage ac (HVAC) and an automobile ignition coil to generate the high voltage pulses (HV Pulse). The compact plasma sources are aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with electric discharge assisted cleaning technique. To enhance NOX removal efficiency cascaded plasma-adsorbent technique has been used. Studies were reported at different flow rates and load conditions of the diesel engine.

In this paper, we present a modified k - epsilon model capable of addressing turbulent weld-pool convection in a GMAW process, taking into account the morphology of the phase change interface during a Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. A three-dimensional turbulence mathematical model has been developed to study the heat transfer and fluid flow within the weld pool by considering the combined effect of three driving forces, viz., buoyancy, Lorentz force and surface tension (Marangoni convection). Mass and energy transports by the droplets are considered through the thermal analysis of the electrode. The falling droplet's heat addition to the molten pool is considered to be a volumetric heat source distributed in an imaginary cylindrical cavity ("cavity model") within the weld pool. This nature of heat source distribution takes into account the momentum and the thermal, energy of the falling droplets. The numerically predicted weld pool dimensions both from turbulence and laminar models are then compared with the experimental post-weld results sectioned across the weld axis. The above comparison enables us to analyze the overall effects of turbulent convection on the nature of heat and fluid flow and hence on the weld pool shape/size during the arc welding processes.
