The Ca2+-activated K+ channel in endocrine cells is responsible for membrane hyperpolarization and rhythmic firing of action potentials. The probability of opening of this channel is sensitive to intracellular-free Ca2+ concentration. In this study we have identified one such large conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channel in alpha T3-1 pituitary gonadotroph cell. This channel is ohmic with a unit conductance of 170 pS in symmetrical KCl (135 mM) and its current reverses near zero millivolts. When more than one channel is present in the patch membrane they open and close independent of each other, exhibiting no cooperativity between them as expected of a binomial distribution. The regulatory mechanism of this channel in modulating hormone secretion from alpha T3-1 gonadotroph cells is indicated.

Variable cross-sectional area ducts are often used for attenuation at lower frequencies (of the order of firing frequency), whereas concentric tube resonators provide attenuation at relatively higher frequencies. In this paper, analysis of one dimensional control volume approach of conical concentric tube resonators is validated experimentally. The effects of mean flow and taper are investigated. The experimental setup is specially designed to measure the pressure transfer function in the form of Level Difference or Noise Reduction across the test muffler. It is shown that there is a reasonably good agreement between the predicted values of the Noise Reduction and the measured ones for incompressible mean flow as well as stationary medium. Considering cement based composites as chemically bonded ceramics (CBC) the consequent strength development with age is essentially a constant volume solidification process, such that the hydrated gel particles fill the space resulting in the compatible gel space ratios. Analysis has been done of the extensively used graphical method of mix design (British method of mix design) i.e., the relation between the compressive strength and the free water - cement ratio. By considering the strength (S) at w/c 0.5 (S-0.5) as the reference state to reflect the synergetic effects between constituents of concrete a generalized relationship obtained is of the form {S/S-0.5} = a + b {1/(w/c)}.

Ceramic matrix composites of Al2O3-SiC-(Al,Si) have been fabricated by directed melt oxidation of aluminum alloys into SiC particulate preforms. The proportions of Al2O3, alloy, and porosity in the composite can be controlled by proper selection of SLC particle size and the processing temperature. The wear resistance of composites was evaluated in pin-on-disk experiments against a hard steel substrate. Minimum wear rate comparable to conventional ceramics such as ZTA is recorded for the composition containing the highest fraction of alloy, owing to the development of a thin and adherent tribofilm with a low coefficient of friction.

The pyroelectric and electrostrictive properties of lead zinc niobate-lead titanate-barium titanate (PZN-BT-PT) ceramic solid solution were investigated. These properties of the (1 - x)PZN.xBT series were qualitatively explained with a composition fluctuation model. The pyroelectric depolarization temperatures of (1 - x - y)PZN.xBT.yPT ceramics were utilized to select compositions for room-temperature electrostrictive applications. Among them, 0.85PZN.0.10BT.0.05PT ceramic with Q11 = 0.018 m4/C2, Q12 = -0.0085 m4/C2, S2 at 25 kV/cm = -6.1 x 10(-4), T(max) = 75-degrees-C at 1 kHz, and T(t) = 27-degrees-C shows optimum properties for micropositioner applications.

The paper correlates the reactivity of rice husk ash with its physicochemical properties such as crystallinity, surface area, microstructure, particle size distribution, porosity and solubility. These properties, in tum, are dependent on the time-temperature conditions under which the ash is prepared. It is found that the reactivity of the ash cannot be quantified by any one of these parameters alone, though they all indicate it qualitatively. Therefore, a method for quantifying this property was developed, by which the Reactivity Index is obtained. There is only a gradual change in the reactivity index of RHA with ashing temperature, as in many other properties, like surface area, porosity and total volume of gas absorbed by unit mass of the silica ash. This reactive index is found to be useful in determining the optimum ash/lime ratios required to give the best performance for RHA-lime composites.

A new class of nets, called S-nets, is introduced for the performance analysis of scheduling algorithms used in real-time systems Deterministic timed Petri nets do not adequately model the scheduling of resources encountered in real-time systems, and need to be augmented with resource places and signal places, and a scheduler block, to facilitate the modeling of scheduling algorithms. The tokens are colored, and the transition firing rules are suitably modified. Further, the concept of transition folding is used, to get intuitively simple models of multiframe real-time systems. Two generic performance measures, called load index and balance index, which characterize the resource utilization and the uniformity of workload distribution, respectively, are defined. The utility of S-nets for evaluating heuristic-based scheduling schemes is illustrated by considering three heuristics for real-time scheduling. S-nets are useful in tuning the hardware configuration and the underlying scheduling policy, so that the system utilization is maximized, and the workload distribution among the computing resources is balanced.

Constant-stress tensile creep experiments on a superplastic 3-mol%-yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia composite with 20 wt% alumina revealed that cavities nucleate relatively early during tensile deformation. The number of cavities nucleated increases with increasing imposed stress. The cavities nucleate at triple points associated largely with an alumina grain, and then grow rapidly in a cracklike manner to attain dimensions on the order of the grain facet size. It is suggested that coarser-grained superplastic ceramics exhibit lower ductility due to the ease in formation of such grain boundary facet-cracks and their interlinkage to form a macroscopic crack of critical dimensions.

A microbial survey of Jamnagar bauxite mines in Gujarat, India, revealed the indigenous presence of a variety of autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria and fungi associated with the ore body and water ponds in the vicinity. Among these, bacteria belonging to the genera Thiobacillus, Bacillus and Pseudomonas are implicated in the weathering of aluminosilicates; the precipitation of iron oxyhydroxides; the dissolution and conversion of alkaline metal species; and the formation of alumina, silica and calcite minerals. Fungi belonging to the genus Cladosporium can reduce ferric iron and dissolve alumina silicates. Biogenesis thus plays a significant role in bauxite mineralization. Various types of bacteria and fungi, such as Bacillus polymyxa, Bacillus coagulans and Aspergillus niger, were found to be efficient in significant calcium solubilization and partial iron removal from bauxite ore. Probable mechanisms in the biobeneficiation process are analyzed. Biobeneficiation is shown to be an effective technique for the removal of iron and calcium from bauxite ores for use in refractories and ceramics.

The influence of mechanical activation on the formation of Bi2VO5.5 bismuth vanadate (BiV) phase, was investigated by ball-milling a stoichiometric mixture of bismuth oxide and vanadium pentoxide. The structural evolution of the desired BN phase, via an intermediate BiVO4,phase, was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction; (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Milling for 54h. yielded monophasic gamma-BiV powders with an average crystallite size of 30 nm. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) peaks associated with the V4+ ions are stronger and broader in nanocrystalline (n) BN than in the conventionally prepared microcrystalline (m) BN, suggesting theta significant portion of V5+ has been transformed to V4+ during milling. The optical bandgap of n-BiV was found to be higher than that of m-BiV. High density (97% of the theoretical density), fine-grained (average grain-size of 2 tun) ceramics with uniform grain-size distribution could be fabricated using n-BiV powders. These fine-grained ceramics exhibit improved dielectric, pyre and ferroelectric properties. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Glasses in the system (1 - x)Li2B4O7-xBi(2)WO(6) (0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35) were prepared by splat quenching technique. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) were employed to characterize the as-quenched glasses. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR TEM) revealed the presence of fine, nearly spherical crystallites of Bi2WO6 varying from 1.5 to 20 nm in size, depending on x in the as-quenched glasses. The glasses (corresponding to x = 0.3) heat-treated at 723 K for 6 h gave rise to a clear crystalline phase of Bi2WO6 embedded in the Li2B4O7 glass matrix, as observed by X-ray studies. The dielectric constants of the as-quenched glasses as well as the glass-ceramics decreased with increase in frequency (40Hz-100 kHz) at 300 K, and the value obtained for the glass-ceramic (x = 0.2) is in agreement with the values predicted using Maxwell's model and the logarithmic mixture rule. The dielectric constants for both the as-quenched glass and the glass-ceramic increased with increase in temperature (300 - 873 K) and exhibited anomalies close to the onset of the crystallization temperature of the host glass matrix. The optical transmission properties:of these glass-ceramics were found to be compositional dependant. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.

This paper is aimed at investigating the acoustic emission activities during indentation toughness tests on an alumina based wear resistant ceramic and 25 wt% silicon carbide whisker (SIC,) reinforced alumina composite. It has been shown that the emitted acoustic emission signals characterize the crack growth during loading. and unloading cycles in an indentation test. The acoustic emission results indicate that in the case of the composite the amount of crack growth during unloading is higher than that of loading, while the reverse is true in case of the wear resistant ceramics. Acoustic emission activity observed in wear resistant ceramic is less than that in the case of composite. An attempt has been made to correlate the acoustic emission signals with crack growth during indentation test.

Al2O3-SiC-(Al,Si) cermets are fabricated using the melt oxidation route. The tribological properties of the composites are tested under adhesive sliding and two body abrasion conditions. Under adhesive conditions, the network of residual aluminium in the matrix plays a role in the formation of a thin tribofilm on the interface while in abrasion the hardness of the composite plays a prominent tribological role. The work suggests that microstructural control can make this low temperature composite competitive with the conventional high temperature monolithic ceramics. Recently, we demonstrated a very general route to monolithic macroporous materials prepared without the use of templates (Rajamathi et al. J. Mater. Chem. 2001, 11, 2489). The route involves finding a precursor containing two metals, A and B, whose oxides are largely immiscible. Firing of the precursor followed by suitable sintering results in a monolith from which one of the oxide phases can be chemically leached out to yield a macroporous mass of the other oxide phase. The metals A and B that we employed in the demonstration were Ni and Zn. From the NiO-ZnO monolith that was obtained by decomposing the precursor, ZnO could be leached out at high pH to yield macroporous NiO. In the present work, we show that combustion-chemical (also called self-propagating) decomposition of a mixture of Ni and Zn nitrates with urea as a fuel yields an intimate mixture of the oxides that can be sintered and leached with alkali to form a macroporous NiO monolith. The new process that we present here thereby avoids the need for a crystalline single-source precursor. A novel and unanticipated aspect of the present work is that the combination of high temperatures and rapid quenching associated with combustion synthesis results in an intimate mixture of wurtzite ZnO and the metastable rock-salt Ni1-xZnxO where x is about 0.3. Leaching this monolith with alkali gives a macroporous mass of rock-salt Ni1-xZnxO, which upon reduction in H-2/Ar forms macroporous Ni and ZnO. There are thus two stages in the process that lead to two modes of pore formation. The first is associated with leaching of ZnO by alkali. The second is associated with the reduction of porous Ni1-xZnxO to give porous Ni and ZnO.
