Among the classical operators of mathematical physics the Laplacian plays an important role due to the number of different situations that can be modelled by it. Because of this a great effort has been made by mathematicians as well as by engineers to master its properties till the point that nearly everything has been said about them from a qualitative viewpoint. Quantitative results have also been obtained through the use of the new numerical techniques sustained by the computer. Finite element methods and boundary techniques have been successfully applied to engineering problems as can be seen in the technical literature (for instance [ l ] , [2], [3] . Boundary techniques are especially advantageous in those cases in which the main interest is concentrated on what is happening at the boundary. This situation is very usual in potential problems due to the properties of harmonic functions. In this paper we intend to show how a boundary condition different from the classical, but physically sound, is introduced without any violence in the discretization frame of the Boundary Integral Equation Method. The idea will be developed in the context of heat conduction in axisymmetric problems but it is hoped that its extension to other situations is straightforward. After the presentation of the method several examples will show the capabilities of modelling a physical problem.

SUMMARY Concentration Photovoltaic Systems (CPV) have been proposed as an alternative to conventional systems. During the last years, there has been a boom of the CPV industry caused by the technological progress in all the elements of the system. and mainly caused by the use of multijunction solar cells based on III-V semiconductors, with efficiencies exceeding to 43%. III-V solar cells have been used with high reliability results in a great number of space missions without concentration. However, there are no previous results regarding their reliability in concentration terrestrial applications, where the working conditions are completely different. This lack of experience, together with the important industrial interest, has generated the need to evaluate the reliability of the cells. For this reason, nowadays there are several research centers around the undertaking this task. The evaluation of the reliability of this type of devices by means of accelerated tests is especially problematic when they work at medium or high concentration, because it is practically impossible to emulate real working conditions of the cell inside climatic chambers. In fact, as far as we know, the results that appear in this Thesis are the first estimating the Activation Energy of the failure mechanism involved, as well as the warranty of the III-V concentrator solar cells tested here. To evaluate the reliability of III-V very high concentrator solar cells by means of accelerated tests, a variety of activities, described in this Thesis have been carried out. The First Part of the memory presents the theoretical part of the Doctoral Thesis. After the Introduction, chapter 2 presents the state of the art in degradation and reliability of CPV systems and solar cells. Chapter 3 introduces some reliability definitions and the application of specific statistical functions to the evaluation of the reliability and parameters. From these functions, important parameters will be calculated to be used later in the experimental results of Thesis. The Second Part of the memory contains the experimental. Chapter 4 shows the types of accelerated tests and the main goals pursuit with them when carried out over CPV systems and solar cells. In order to evaluate quantitatively the reliability of the III-V concentrator solar cells used in these tests, some modifications have been introduced which discussion will be tackled here. Based on this analysis the working plan of the tests carried out in this Doctoral Thesis is presented. Chapter 5 presents a new methodology as well as the necessary instrumentation to carry out the tests described here. This new methodology takes into account the adaptation, improvement and novel techniques needed to test concentrator solar cells. The core of this memory is chapter 6, which presents the results of the characterization of the cells during the accelerated life tests and the analysis of the aforementioned results with the purpose of getting quantitative values of reliability in real working conditions. The acceleration factor of the accelerated life tests, under nominal working conditions has been calculated. Accordingly, the validity of the methodology as well as the calculations based on the reliability assessment, have also been demonstrated. Finally, quantitative values of degradation, reliability and warranty of the solar cells under field nominal working conditions have been calculated. With the development of this Doctoral Thesis the reliability of very high concentrator GaAs solar cells of small area has been evaluated. It is very interesting to generalize the procedures described up to this point to III-V multijunction solar cells of greater area. Therefore, chapter 7 develops this generalization and introduces also a useful thermal modeling by means of finite elements of the test cells’ circuits. In the last chapter, the summary of the results and the main contributions of this Thesis are outlined and future research activities are identified.

The selection of predefined analytic grids (partitions of the numeric ranges) to represent input and output functions as histograms has been proposed as a mechanism of approximation in order to control the tradeoff between accuracy and computation times in several áreas ranging from simulation to constraint solving. In particular, the application of interval methods for probabilistic function characterization has been shown to have advantages over other methods based on the simulation of random samples. However, standard interval arithmetic has always been used for the computation steps. In this paper, we introduce an alternative approximate arithmetic aimed at controlling the cost of the interval operations. Its distinctive feature is that grids are taken into account by the operators. We apply the technique in the context of probability density functions in order to improve the accuracy of the probability estimates. Results show that this approach has advantages over existing approaches in some particular situations, although computation times tend to increase significantly when analyzing large functions.

In this paper, a new linear method for optimizing compact low noise oscillators for RF/MW applications will be presented. The first part of this paper makes an overview of Leeson's model. It is pointed out, and it is demonstrates that the phase noise is always the same inside the oscillator loop. It is presented a general phase noise optimization method for reference plane oscillators. The new method uses Transpose Return Relations (RRT) as true loop gain functions for obtaining the optimum values of the elements of the oscillator, whatever scheme it has. With this method, oscillator topologies that have been designed and optimized using negative resistance, negative conductance or reflection coefficient methods, until now, can be studied like a loop gain method. Subsequently, the main disadvantage of Leeson's model is overcome, and now it is not only valid for loop gain methods, but it is valid for any oscillator topology. The last section of this paper lists the steps to be performed to use this method for proper phase noise optimization during the linear design process and before the final non-linear optimization. The power of the proposed RRT method is shown with its use for optimizing a common oscillator, which is later simulated using Harmonic Balance (HB) and manufactured. Then, the comparison of the linear, HB and measurements of the phase noise are compared.

A unified solution framework is presented for one-, two- or three-dimensional complex non-symmetric eigenvalue problems, respectively governing linear modal instability of incompressible fluid flows in rectangular domains having two, one or no homogeneous spatial directions. The solution algorithm is based on subspace iteration in which the spatial discretization matrix is formed, stored and inverted serially. Results delivered by spectral collocation based on the Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto (CGL) points and a suite of high-order finite-difference methods comprising the previously employed for this type of work Dispersion-Relation-Preserving (DRP) and Padé finite-difference schemes, as well as the Summationby- parts (SBP) and the new high-order finite-difference scheme of order q (FD-q) have been compared from the point of view of accuracy and efficiency in standard validation cases of temporal local and BiGlobal linear instability. The FD-q method has been found to significantly outperform all other finite difference schemes in solving classic linear local, BiGlobal, and TriGlobal eigenvalue problems, as regards both memory and CPU time requirements. Results shown in the present study disprove the paradigm that spectral methods are superior to finite difference methods in terms of computational cost, at equal accuracy, FD-q spatial discretization delivering a speedup of ð (10 4). Consequently, accurate solutions of the three-dimensional (TriGlobal) eigenvalue problems may be solved on typical desktop computers with modest computational effort.

During the last decades the increase of the speed and the reduction of the weight of high-speed railway vehicles has led to a rise of the overturn risk. In this doctoral thesis the dynamic effects that appear in the railway vehicles when crossing viaducts under strong winds are studied. For this purpose it has been developed and implemented numerical models for studying these effects in a realistic and general way. The developed models allow to analyze the train-structure three-dimensional dynamic interaction, that is formulated by using absolute coordinates in an inertial reference frame within a non-linear finite element framework. By means of these models it is possible to study in a realistic way extreme situations such vehicle overturn or derailment. The interaction between the vehicle and the structure is established through the wheel-rail contact. For this purpose, a constraint has been developed. It allows to establish the kinematic relationship between the railway wheelset and the track, taking into account the track irregularities. In addition, a wheel-rail contact model for establishing the interaction of the vehicle and the structure has been developed. One presents in this work the study of the interaction between a focused laser beam and Si nanowires (NWs). The NWs heating induced by the laser beam is studied by solving the heat transfer equation by finite element methods (fem). This analysis permits to establish the temperature distribution inside the NW when it is excited by the laser beam. The overheating is dependent on the dimensions of the NW, both the diameter and the length. When performing optical characterization of the NWs using focused laser beams, one has to consider the temperature increase introduced by the laser beam. An important issue concerns the fact that the NWs diameter has subwavelength dimensions, and is also smaller than the focused laser beam. The analysis of the thermal behaviour of the NWs under the excitation with the laser beam permits the interpretation of the Raman spectra of Si NWs, where it is demonstrated that temperature induced by the laser beam play a major role in shaping the Raman spectrum of Si NWs

This article describes the simulation and characterization of an ultrasonic transducer using a new material called Rexolite to be used as a matching element. This transducer was simulated using a commercial piezoelectric ceramic PIC255 at 8 MHz. Rexolite, the new material, presents an excellent acoustic matching, specially in terms of the acoustic impedance of water. Finite elements simulations were used in this work. Rexolite was considered as a suitable material in the construction of the transducer due to its malleability and acoustic properties, to validate the simulations a prototype transducer was constructed. Experimental measurements were used to determine the resonance frequency of the prototype transducer. Simulated and experimental results were very similar showing that Rexolite may be an excellent matching, particularly for medical applications.

ABSTRACT In this project it is going to be studied the convenience of numerical simulation as to evaluate, design and improve the design of geothermal planar installations. With this purpose, the terrain and the geothermal system will be modeled by coupling a three-dimensional model (terrain) and a one-dimensional model formed by the geothermal piping network disposed in a plane with an orientation which will depend on the applications. For the numerical simulation commercial software of analyzing and resolving by finite elements will be used. Finally, geometric design parameters will be defined, and taking into account the thermal properties of each material, parametric studies will be performed to determine the influence of each group of parameters. This will require the completion of hundreds of numerical simulations which will enhance the performance of both horizontal (slabs) and vertical (diaphragm walls) geothermal systems.

Using the Monte Carlo method the behavior of a system of true hard cylinders has been studied. Values of the length-to-breadth ratio L/D and packing fraction η have been chosen similar to those of real nematic liquid crystals. Results include radial distribution function g(r), structure factor S(k), and orientational order parameter M. These results lead to the conclusion that the hard cylinder model may be a useful reference for real mesomorphic phases.

ABSTRACT In an industrial scenario where rapid microbiological methods are becoming essential tools for quality control in the biotechnological area such as food, pharmaceutical and biochemical; the objective of the work presented in this doctoral thesis is to develop a rapid microorganism inspection technique based on ultrasounds. It is proposed that the combination of an ultrasonic measuring device with a specially designed liquid medium, able to produce and trap bubbles could constitute the basis of a sensitive and rapid detection method for microbial contaminations. The proposed technique is effective on catalase positive microorganisms. Well-known catalase induced hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis is the fundamental of the developed method. The physical consequence of the catalase induced hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis is an increasingly bubbly liquid medium. Such medium has been studied and modeled from the point of view of ultrasonic propagation. Properties deduced from enzyme kinematics analysis have been extrapolated to investigate the method as a microbial inspection technique. In this thesis, theoretical and experimental aspects of the hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis were analyzed in order to quantitatively describe and understand the catalase positive microorganism detection by means of ultrasonic measurements. More concretely, experiments performed show how the produced oxygen in form of bubbles is trapped using the new gel medium based on agar, which was specially designed for this application. Ultrasonic attenuation and backscattering is measured in this medium using a pulse-echo technique along the hydrogen peroxide hydrolysis process. Catalase enzymatic activity was detected down to 0.001 units/ml. Moreover, this study shows that by means of the proposed method, microbial detection can be achieved down to 105 cells/ml in a short time period of the order of few minutes. These results suppose a significant improvement of three orders of magnitude compared to other ultrasonic detection methods for microorganisms. In addition, the sensitivity reached is competitive with modern rapid microbiological methods such as ATP detection by bioluminescence. But above all, this work points out a way to proceed for developing new rapid microbial detection techniques based on ultrasound.

Many advantages can be got in combining finite and boundary elements. It is the case, for example, of unbounded field problems where boundary elements can provide the appropriate conditions to represent the infinite domain while finite elements are suitable for more complex properties in the near domain. However, in spite of it, other disadvantages can appear. It would be, for instance, the loss of symmetry in the finite elements stiffness matrix, when the combination is made. On the other hand, in our days, with the strong irruption of the parallel proccessing the techniques of decomposition of domains are getting the interest of numerous scientists. With their application it is possible to separate the resolution of a problem into several subproblems. That would be beneficial in the combinations BEM-FEM as the loss of symmetry would be avoided and every technique would be applicated separately. Evidently for the correct application of these techniques it is necessary to establish the suitable transmission conditions in the interface between BEM domain and FEM domain. In this paper, one parallel method is presented which is based in the interface operator of Steklov Poincarè.

The pressuremeter test in boreholes has proven itself as a useful tool in geotechnical explorations, especially comparing its results with those obtained from a mathematical model ruled by a soil representative constitutive equation. The numerical model shown in this paper is aimed to be the reference framework for the interpretation of this test. The model analyses variables such as: the type of response, the initial state, the drainage regime and the constitutive equations. It is a model of finite elements able to work with a mesh without deformation or one adapted to it.
