Anelastic spectroscopy in SmBa2Cu3O7

The possibility of variable stoichiometry and the high mobility of oxygen in the CuOx planes of SmBa2Cu3O7 give rise to a rich phase diagram. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature can distinguish among the different atomic jumps, which occur in the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, it is reported anelastic relaxation measurements in SmBa2Cu3O7, above room temperature, using a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies around 40 Hz. The mobility of oxygen atoms in the CuOx planes in the various phases has been discussed and the thermally activated peak of elastic energy dissipation observed around 500 K was interpreted in that framework. Development on polymeric precursor routes to produce superconducting nanoparticles

The well-known polymeric precursor route is a simple and low-cost sol-gel method based on the preparation of an aqueous precursor solution of metals followed by the addition of a water-soluble polymer. This method consists of a polyesterification process between a metal chelate complex by using a hydroxycarboxylic acid and a polyhydroxy alcohol. In this work, citric acid (CA), tartaric acid (TA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) are used as the hydroxycarboxylic acid and ethylene glycol (EG) is used as the polyhydroxy alcohol. The effects of the precursor pH solution, time and temperature of polymerization step as well as the combination of different chelating agents in order to obtain nanoscopic YBa2Cu3Oy samples were traced. PT-symmetric kinks

Some kinks for non-Hermitian quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions are constructed. A class of models where the soliton energies are stable and real are found. Although these kinks are not Hermitian, they are symmetric under PT transformations.

Analysis of the performance of an extraction-condensation steam turbine on a cogeneration system of a Brazilian sugar-alcohol factory

In this work a detailed thermodynamic analysis for an extraction-condensation steam turbine capable to drive a 40 MVA electricity generator in a sugar-alcohol factory was carried out. The use of this turbine in the cogeneration system showed that its efficiency contributed to increase the power generation, although the condensation reduces the overall efficiency of the plant. Sensibility analyses were performed to evaluate the behavior of the overall energy efficiency of a plant with the extraction-condensation turbine in function of the boiler efficiency, the specific consumption of steam in the processes and the condensation rate in the turbine. It was observed that the plant efficiency is very sensible to the condensation rate variation and it increases when there is an increase in the demand of steam for processes.

Analysis and functional annotation of an expressed sequence tag collection for tropical crop sugarcane

To contribute to our understanding of the genome complexity of sugarcane, we undertook a large-scale expressed sequence tag (EST),program. More than 260,000 cDNA clones were partially sequenced from 26 standard cDNA libraries generated from different sugarcane tissues. After the processing of the sequences, 237,954 high-quality ESTs were identified. These ESTs were assembled into 43,141 putative transcripts. of the assembled sequences, 35.6% presented no matches with existing sequences in public databases. A global analysis of the whole SUCEST data set indicated that 14,409 assembled sequences (33% of the total) contained at least one cDNA clone with a full-length insert. Annotation of the 43,141 assembled sequences associated almost 50% of the putative identified sugarcane genes with protein metabolism, cellular communication/signal transduction, bioenergetics, and stress responses. Inspection of the translated assembled sequences for conserved protein domains revealed 40,821 amino acid sequences with 1415 Pfam domains. Reassembling the consensus sequences of the 43,141 transcripts revealed a 22% redundancy in the first assembling. This indicated that possibly 33,620 unique genes had been identified and indicated that >90% of the sugarcane expressed genes were tagged.
