Expansion of undergraduate courses in nursing: dilemmas and contradictions facing the labor market

We sought to analyze, from the perspective of professors and students, the reasons and consequences of the expansion of undergraduate courses in nursing, discussing the dilemmas and the contradictions confronting the labor market. It was a qualitative study with data obtained from focus groups, conducted in 18 undergraduate nursing courses in the state of Minas Gerais, during the period of February to October of 2011. The narratives were submitted to critical discourse analysis. The results indicated that the education of the nurse was permeated by insecurity as to the future integration into the labor market. The insecurity translates into dilemmas that referred to employability and the precariousness of the working conditions. In this context, employment in the family health strategy emerges as a mirage. One glimpses the need for a political agenda with the purpose of discussion about education, the labor market and the determinants of these processes.

Desenvolvimento de Sistema Integrado para Gestão de Clínica realizado na ADA Soluções

Este relatório apresenta o trabalho realizado na empresa ADA soluções sobre o tema Desenvolvimento de Sistema Integrado para Gestão de Clínica para obtenção de grau de Licenciatura em Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação na Universidade de Cabo Verde. O Sistema Integrado para Gestão de Clínica (SIGC) é um sistema complexo que permite entrada e tratamento de dados, distribuição das informações, um produto que auxilia a gerência de uma clínica. Dado a complexidade deste sistema, foi dividido em seis módulos: Agenda Medica, Gestão de Stock, Marcação de Serviço, Pagamento, Registo e Relatório. Convém realçar que cada módulo foi atribuído a um estagiário. Serão apresentados, o enquadramento teórico feito para realização deste trabalho, as actividades planeadas, os resultados e as dificuldades encontradas ao longo deste trabalho. O módulo Pagamento, o qual este relatório descreve permite efectuar todos os pagamentos da e na clínica. Pagamento é a entrada e saída dos fluxos monetários correspondente produto fornecido ou serviços prestados.

Post-detection analysis for grating-based ultra-small angle X-ray scattering.

Until recently, the hard X-ray, phase-sensitive imaging technique called grating interferometry was thought to provide information only in real space. However, by utilizing an alternative approach to data analysis we demonstrated that the angular resolved ultra-small angle X-ray scattering distribution can be retrieved from experimental data. Thus, reciprocal space information is accessible by grating interferometry in addition to real space. Naturally, the quality of the retrieved data strongly depends on the performance of the employed analysis procedure, which involves deconvolution of periodic and noisy data in this context. The aim of this article is to compare several deconvolution algorithms to retrieve the ultra-small angle X-ray scattering distribution in grating interferometry. We quantitatively compare the performance of three deconvolution procedures (i.e., Wiener, iterative Wiener and Lucy-Richardson) in case of realistically modeled, noisy and periodic input data. The simulations showed that the algorithm of Lucy-Richardson is the more reliable and more efficient as a function of the characteristics of the signals in the given context. The availability of a reliable data analysis procedure is essential for future developments in grating interferometry.

Editorial research and the publication process in biomedicine and health: Report from the Esteve Foundation Discussion Group, December 2012.

Despite the fact that there are more than twenty thousand biomedical journals in the world, research into the work of editors and publication process in biomedical and health care journals is rare. In December 2012, the Esteve Foundation, a non-profit scientific institution that fosters progress in pharmacotherapy by means of scientific communication and discussion organized a discussion group of 7 editors and/or experts in peer review biomedical publishing. They presented findings of past editorial research, discussed the lack of competitive funding schemes and specialized journals for dissemination of editorial research, and reported on the great diversity of misconduct and conflict of interest policies, as well as adherence to reporting guidelines. Furthermore, they reported on the reluctance of editors to investigate allegations of misconduct or increase the level of data sharing in health research. In the end, they concluded that if editors are to remain gatekeepers of scientific knowledge they should reaffirm their focus on the integrity of the scientific record and completeness of the data they publish. Additionally, more research should be undertaken to understand why many journals are not adhering to editorial standards, and what obstacles editors face when engaging in editorial research.

Treatment of chronic hepatitis C.

Treatment for chronic hepatitis C has changed over the past years achieving higher response rates. The combination treatment with pegylated interferon-a and ribavirin is tailored based on the on-treatment virological responses. With this response-guided therapy, the overall sustained virological response rate is about 55%. Many new antivirals are currently under investigation and some will be commercially available in the near future. These include antiviral molecules acting directly against the hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication machinery, such as the inhibitors of the viral protease, and agents binding to host cofactors of the viral replication, thereby inhibiting HCV in an indirect way (such as cyclophilin inhibitors and nitazoxanide). The advent of these drugs will further ameliorate response rates and facilitate the permanent cure of chronic hepatitis C.

Effects of computing parameters and measurement locations on the estimation of 3D NPS in non-stationary MDCT images.

The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of computing parameters and the location of volumes of interest (VOI) on the calculation of 3D noise power spectrum (NPS) in order to determine an optimal set of computing parameters and propose a robust method for evaluating the noise properties of imaging systems. Noise stationarity in noise volumes acquired with a water phantom on a 128-MDCT and a 320-MDCT scanner were analyzed in the spatial domain in order to define locally stationary VOIs. The influence of the computing parameters in the 3D NPS measurement: the sampling distances bx,y,z and the VOI lengths Lx,y,z, the number of VOIs NVOI and the structured noise were investigated to minimize measurement errors. The effect of the VOI locations on the NPS was also investigated. Results showed that the noise (standard deviation) varies more in the r-direction (phantom radius) than z-direction plane. A 25 × 25 × 40 mm(3) VOI associated with DFOV = 200 mm (Lx,y,z = 64, bx,y = 0.391 mm with 512 × 512 matrix) and a first-order detrending method to reduce structured noise led to an accurate NPS estimation. NPS estimated from off centered small VOIs had a directional dependency contrary to NPS obtained from large VOIs located in the center of the volume or from small VOIs located on a concentric circle. This showed that the VOI size and location play a major role in the determination of NPS when images are not stationary. This study emphasizes the need for consistent measurement methods to assess and compare image quality in CT.
