Sr2TiMnO6, a double perovskite associated with high degree of B-site cation disorder was investigated in detail for its structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties. Though x-ray powder diffraction analysis confirms its cubic structure, first order Raman scattering and infrared reflectivity spectra indicate a breaking of the local cubic symmetry. The magnetization study reveals an anomaly at 14 K owing to a ferrimagnetic/canted antiferromagneticlike ordering arising from local Mn-O-Mn clusters. Saturated M-H hysteresis loops obtained at 5 K also reflect the weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions present in the system and an approximate estimation of Mn3+/Mn4+ was done using the magnetization data for the samples sintered at different temperatures. The conductivity and dielectric behavior of this system has been investigated in a broad temperature range of 10 to 300 K. Intrinsic permittivity was obtained only below 100 K whereas giant permittivity due to conductivity and Maxwell-Wagner polarization was observed at higher temperatures. X-ray photoemission studies further confirmed the presence of mixed oxidation states of Mn and the valence band spectra analysis was carried out in detail. Electronic absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy have been used to investigate the interaction of the fullerenes C60 and C70 with diethylaniline, and with aromatic solvents such as benzene. C60 interacts weakly with aromatic amines in the ground state while C70 does not interact at all. Steady state fluorescence emission and lifetime measurements show that both C60 and C70 form excited state complexes (exciplexes) with the amines in non-aromatic solvents such as methylcyclohexane, but not in benzene. In benzene, only fluorescence quenching is observed due to the interaction between the π systems of the aromatic solvent and the fullerene in the ground state. This is also borne out by the systematic study of solvent effects on the absorption and emission spectra of the fullerenes.

Octabromotetraphenylporphyrin adopts a severe saddle-shaped distorted structure owing to the steric crowding of heavy bromine substituents. The rate enhancement of porphyrin metalation reaction is primarily due to the nonplanarity of the ring while the electronic effect diminishes the affinity of the porphyrin towards metal ions.

We elucidate the relationship between effective mass and carrier concentration in an oxide semiconductor controlled by a double-doping mechanism. In this model oxide system, Sr1-xLaxTiO3-delta, we can tune the effective mass ranging from 6 to 20m(e) as a function of filling (carrier concentration) and the scattering mechanism, which are dependent on the chosen lanthanum-and oxygen-vacancy concentrations. The effective mass values were calculated from the Boltzmann transport equation using the measured transport properties of thin films of Sr1-xLaxTiO3-delta. We show that the effective mass decreases with carrier concentration in this large-band-gap, low-mobility oxide, and this behavior is contrary to the traditional high-mobility, small-effective-mass semiconductors.

We propose F-norm of the cross-correlation part of the array covariance matrix as a measure of correlation between the impinging signals and study the performance of different decorrelation methods in the broadband case using this measure. We first show that dimensionality of the composite signal subspace, defined as the number of significant eigenvectors of the source sample covariance matrix, collapses in the presence of multipath and the spatial smoothing recovers this dimensionality. Using an upper bound on the proposed measure, we then study the decorrelation of the broadband signals with spatial smoothing and the effect of spacing and directions of the sources on the rate of decorrelation with progressive smoothing. Next, we introduce a weighted smoothing method based on Toeplitz-block-Toeplitz (TBT) structuring of the data covariance matrix which decorrelates the signals much faster than the spatial smoothing. Computer simulations are included to demonstrate the performance of the two methods.

Titanium nitride films of a thickness of similar to 1.5 mu m were deposited on amorphous and crystalline substrates by DC reactive magnetron sputtering at ambient temperature with 100% nitrogen in the sputter gas. The growth of nanostructured, i.e. crystalline nano-grain sized, films at ambient temperature is demonstrated. The microstructure of the films grown on crystalline substrates reveals a larger grain size/crystallite size than that of the films deposited on amorphous substrates. Specular reflectance measurements on films deposited on different substrates indicate that the position of the Ti-N 2s band at 2.33 eV is substrate-dependent, indicating substrate-mediated stoichiometry. This clearly demonstrates that not only structure and microstructure, but also chemical composition of the films is substrate-influenced. The films deposited on amorphous substrates display lower hardness and modulus values than the films deposited on crystalline substrates, with the highest value of hardness being 19 GPa on a lanthanum aluminate substrate. The title complex has been prepared from a reaction of [Ru2O(O22CMe)2 (MeCN)4(PPH3)2](ClO4)2 with N,N-dimethyl-1,2-diaminoethane (dmen) in MeOH. The crystal structure of [Ru2O(O2CMe)2(dmen)2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2.MeOH shows the presence of a [Ru2(mu-O)(mu-O2CMe)2]2+ core. The terminal ligands on each metal are a PPh3 and a bidentate chelating dmen. The Ru-Ru distance and Ru-O-Ru angle in the core are 3.271(2) angstrom and 120.9(4)-degrees. The more electron-donating site of the dmen ligand is bonded at the terminal sites trans to the mu-oxo ligand. The complex displays a visible absorption band at 566 nm (epsilon, 6960 M-1 cm-1) in MeCN and undergoes a nearly reversible one-electron oxidation at 1.02 V and an irreversible reduction at -0.52 V (vs SCE) in MeCN-0.1 M [NBu4n](ClO4).

The synthesis, properties and crystal structure of the cage complex (1-hydroxy-8-methyl-3,6,10,13,15,18-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.5]nonadecane)cobalt(III) chloride hydrate ([Co(Me,OH-absar)] C13.H2O) are reported. The mechanism of the formation of this contracted cavity cage from a nitro-capped hexaazabicycloicosane type cage has been investigated. Treatment of (1-methyl-8-nitro-3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane)cobalt(III) chloride ([Co(Me,NO2-sar)] 3+) with excess base in aqueous solution leads initially to rapid (t1/2 < 1 ms) and reversible deprotonation of one coordinated secondary amine. This species undergoes a retro-Mannich type reaction and imine hydrolysis (t1/2 almost-equal-to 90 s). Quenching the reaction with acid gives rise to a pair of isomeric intermediate species which have been isolated and characterized. They have a pendant arm macrocyclic structure, resulting from the loss of a methylene unit from one of the arms of the cap. Heating either isomer in aqueous solution gives the new cage compound with the contracted cap. It is postulated that this occurs through a Nef reaction, resulting in the formation of a ketone which then condenses with the coordinated primary amine. A comparison with the corresponding bicycloicosane analogue indicates a reduced chromophoric cavity size for the contracted cage. The reduction potential of the cobalt(III)/cobalt(II) couple is 170 mV more negative for the smaller cage, and, in the electronic spectrum of the cobalt(III) complex, the d-d transitions are both shifted to higher energy, corresponding to a stronger ligand field.

The SCF/DZP and MP2/DZP methods of ab initio quantum chemistry have been utilized to study the structure, vibrational spectra, binding energy, and barrier to internal rotation of methyl isocyanide-borane and acetonitrile-borane adducts. The eclipsed conformation of the complexes was predicted to be a minimum, and the staggered form is a transition state with a barrier height of about 10 cal/mol. The vibrational analyses of CH3NC-BH3 and CH3CN-BH3 and several of their isotopomers have been carried out by the GF matrix method. Computations have also been carried out for free CH3NC and CH3CN in order to investigate the changes in CH3NC and CH3CN as a result of their complex formation with BH3. To obtain an acceptable set of force constants, a recently proposed procedure ''RECOVES'' has been utilized. The increase in the N=C/C=N stretching force constant of CH3NC/CH3CN on adduct formation is interpreted with the help of Parr and Borkman's model. The binding energies for the two adducts have been determined taking basis set superposition error (BSSE) into consideration. The effect of the BSSE on structure, dipole moment, and vibrational frequencies of CH3CN and CH3NC is also evaluated. The predicted infrared band intensities for the two complexes are in good agreement with the experimentally observed features, and they have been utilized in the assignment of vibrational frequencies.

We have studied electronic states of various fragments of C-60 within the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model and have obtained structural, magnetic and spectral properties of these molecules. The fragments studied include corannulene, fluoranthene and pyracylene. Pyracylene is studied using the exact valence bond (VB) approach while fluoranthene and corannulene are studied using a novel restricted CI technique which employs molecular orbitals for constructing the VB functions. The electronic excitations, bond order and ring currents are calculated for these systems. From these studies, the wide range of absorptions in C-60 can be viewed as those localized on pyracylene units or on the corannulene/fluoranthene units. The bond orders and ring currents show the hexagons to be similar to benzene rings. The pentagon-hexagon bonds are also found to be longer than the hexagon-hexagon bonds.

We study the electronic structure of Sr2RuO4, a noncuprate layered superconductor (T-c=0.93 K), using electron spectroscopy. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that the single particle occupied density of states (DOS) is in fair agreement with the calculated DOS. However, resonant photoemission spectroscopy across the Ru 4p-4d threshold establishes the existence of a correlation satellite to the Ru 4d band. The results indicate substantial charge-transfer character at the Fermi level, with on-site correlations U-dd comparable in magnitude to the Ru-O hopping integral, like the cuprates.

Preparation and characterization of the fullerenes, C60 and C70, are described in detail, including the design of the generators fabricated locally. The characterization techniques employed are UV-visible, IR, Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopies, scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. The electron energy level diagram of C60 as well as the one-electron reductions of C60 and C70 leading to various anions are discussed. Electronic absorption spectra of C60- and C60(2-) are reported. Phase transitions from the plastic to the crystalline states of C60 and C70 are examined. Based on a C-13 NMR study in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals, it has been demonstrated that C60 retains its extraordinary symmetry in solution phase as well. Interaction of C60 and C70 with strong electron-donor molecules has been investigated employing cyclic voltammetry. Superconductivity of K(x)C60 has been studied by non-resonant microwave absorption; Na(x)C60 as well as K(c)C70 are shown to be non-superconducting. Doping C60 with iodine does not make it superconducting. Interaction of C60 with SbCl5 and liquid Br2 gives rise to halogenated products.

The antiparallel intramolecular G quartet structure for the 3.5 copy Oxytricha telomeric sequence d(G(4)T(4))(3)G4 has been established using a combination of spectroscopic and chemical probing methods. In the presence of Naf ions, this sequence exhibits a circular dichroism spectrum with a positive band at 295 nm and a negative band around 265 nm, characteristic of an antiparallel G quartet structure. Further, we show that d(G(4)T(4))(3)G(4) adopts an antiparallel intramolecular G quartet structure even in K+ unlike d(G(4)T(4)G(4)). KMnO4 probing experiments indicated the existence of intra and interloop interactions in the Na+ induced structure. We have found that K+ not only increases the thermal stability of,G quartet structure but also binds to the loop region and disrupts stacking and interloop interactions. Biological consequences of such cation-dependent conformational micro-heterogeneity in the loop region of G quartet structures is also discussed.

This paper presents a model study to understand the effect of surfactants on the physicochemical properties of human hair. FT-IR ATR spectroscopy has been employed to understand the chemical changes induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on human scalp hair. In particular, the SDS induced changes in the secondary structure of protein present in the outer protective layer of hair, i.e. cuticle, have been investigated. Conformational changes in the secondary structure of protein were studied by curve fitting of the amide I band after every phase of SDS treatment. It has been found that SDS brings rearrangements in the protein backbone conformations by transforming beta-sheet structure to random coil and beta-turn. Additionally, AFM and SEM studies were carried out to understand the morphological changes induced on the hair surface. SEM and AFM images demonstrated the rupture and partial erosion of cuticle sublayers.
