Libraries and Canon-Formation: the Case of English in the Collections of the Library of the Faculty of Humanities, Lisbon University

Abstract: The project for researching the role played by libraries in canon-formation (namely through their policies regarding the creation, organization, preservation, and utilization of the collections) will be presented and discussed. We selected the Library of the Faculty of Humanities, Lisbon University, a modern academic library, created in 1859, by royal decree of D. Pedro V, following his canonical choice. Actually, the two contemporary rulers of new Britannia— Prince Albert, his cousin, and Queen Victoria—held this king in high consideration for his outstanding contribution to Portuguese modernisation. Representing various fields of study, the collections were decisive to canon-formation in the Faculty of Humanities. Thus, we have been trying to answer the following questions: who has been creating, organizing, preserving, and utilizing the collections, from the mid-nineteenth century onwards? When, where and how? Presently, we are studying the collections in English, namely the works belonging or referring to the long nineteenth century. Richard Garnett’s “The International Library of Famous Literature” (London, 1899) is our first case-study. The anthology determined the Western literary, cultural and visual canon at the turning of the century, as evidenced by comparing it to the Portuguese and Spanish editions, published at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Solving MPCC problem with the hyperbolic penalty function

The main goal of this work is to solve mathematical program with complementarity constraints (MPCC) using nonlinear programming techniques (NLP). An hyperbolic penalty function is used to solve MPCC problems by including the complementarity constraints in the penalty term. This penalty function [1] is twice continuously differentiable and combines features of both exterior and interior penalty methods. A set of AMPL problems from MacMPEC [2] are tested and a comparative study is performed.

Áreas de pesca de la flota artesanal de la zona norte del Perú (3,4° S A 6,5° S) 1996-1999

Analiza los resultados del procesamiento de la información relacionada a la potencialidad y dinámica extractiva de los pescadores artesanales, del área litoral comprendida entre los paralelos 3,4° y 6,5° de latitud sur (S) y los meridianos 80,0°-82,5°de longitud oeste (W) que conforman la zona de más alta diversidad y producción pesquera artesanal en el litoral peruano, frete a las costas de los departamentos de Tumbes y Piura.

Estado reproductivo de la anchoveta Engraulis ringens durante el crucero de evaluación de recursos pelágicos 9906

Da a conocer el estado reproductivo de la anchoveta por grados latitudinales, por lances y por rangos de talla (12,0-13,5 cm y de 14,0-16,5 cm). Se observa un distinto comportamiento reproductivo de anchoveta en cada uno de los rangos de talla y en las diferentes zonas de muestreo, evidenciándose que esta especie no se encuentra en su principal periodo de desove. Así mismo, se presenta la distribución especial de la actividad reproductiva de esta especie. Las muestras fueron obtenidas durante la ejecución del Crucero de Evaluación Hidroacústica de Recursos Pelágico 9906 BIC José Olaya Balandra, BIC Humboldt, LP IMARPE IV y LP IMARPE V.
