As-prepared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are generally mixtures of semiconducting and metallic species, the proportion of the former being around 67%. Since most applications of SWNTs are best served by semiconducting or metallic nanotubes, rather than by mixtures of the two, methods which would directly yield semiconducting and metallic SWNTs in pure form are desirable. In this article, we present the available methods for the direct synthesis of such SWNTs along with the methods available to separate semiconducting and metallic SWNTs from mixtures. We also discuss the synthesis of Y-junction carbon nanotubes.

Empirical research available on technology transfer initiatives is either North American or European. Literature over the last two decades shows various research objectives such as identifying the variables to be measured and statistical methods to be used in the context of studying university based technology transfer initiatives. AUTM survey data from years 1996 to 2008 provides insightful patterns about the North American technology transfer initiatives, we use this data in our paper. This paper has three sections namely, a comparison of North American Universities with (n=1129) and without Medical Schools (n=786), an analysis of the top 75th percentile of these samples and a DEA analysis of these samples. We use 20 variables. Researchers have attempted to classify university based technology transfer initiative variables into multi-stages, namely, disclosures, patents and license agreements. Using the same approach, however with minor variations, three stages are defined in this paper. The first stage is to do with inputs from R&D expenditure and outputs namely, invention disclosures. The second stage is to do with invention disclosures being the input and patents issued being the output. The third stage is to do with patents issued as an input and technology transfers as outcomes.

Hydrothermal synthesis and structural characterization of a new organic polyoxometalate, namely, bis(4,4'-bipyridinium) dodecatungstosilicate dihydrate, 4,4'-bipyH(2)](2)SiW12O40]center dot 2H(2)O (1) is reported. The crystal structure of (1) consists of a SiW12O40](4-) Keggin anion situated on a two-fold axis, two unique 4,4'-bipyridinium cations, one of which is situated on a two-fold axis, and two independent lattice water molecules. The cations and anions are linked by H-bonding.

Mitochondrial Hsp70 (mtHsp70) is essential for a vast repertoire of functions, including protein import, and requires effective interdomain communication for efficient partner-protein interactions. However, the in vivo functional significance of allosteric regulation in eukaryotes is poorly defined. Using integrated biochemical and yeast genetic approaches, we provide compelling evidence that a conserved substrate-binding domain (SBD) loop, L-4,L-5, plays a critical role in allosteric communication governing mtHsp70 chaperone functions across species. In yeast, a temperature-sensitive L-4,L-5 mutation (E467A) disrupts bidirectional domain communication, leading to compromised protein import and mitochondrial function. Loop L-4,L-5 functions synergistically with the linker in modulating the allosteric interface and conformational transitions between SBD and the nucleotide-binding domain (NBD), thus regulating interdomain communication. Second-site intragenic suppressors of E467A isolated within the SBD suppress domain communication defects by conformationally altering the allosteric interface, thereby restoring import and growth phenotypes. Strikingly, the suppressor mutations highlight that restoration of communication from NBD to SBD alone is the minimum essential requirement for effective in vivo function when primed at higher basal ATPase activity, mimicking the J-protein-bound state. Together these findings provide the first mechanistic insights into critical regions within the SBD of mtHsp70s regulating interdomain communication, thus highlighting its importance in protein translocation and mitochondrial biogenesis.
