We propose two algorithms for Q-learning that use the two-timescale stochastic approximation methodology. The first of these updates Q-values of all feasible state–action pairs at each instant while the second updates Q-values of states with actions chosen according to the ‘current’ randomized policy updates. A proof of convergence of the algorithms is shown. Finally, numerical experiments using the proposed algorithms on an application of routing in communication networks are presented on a few different settings.

Most studies exploring the role of upper airway viruses and bacteria in paediatric acute respiratory infections (ARI) focus on specific clinicaldiagnoses and/or do not account for virus–bacteria interactions. We aimed to describe the frequency and predictors of virus and bacteria codetection in children with ARI and cough, irrespective of clinical diagnosis. Bilateral nasal swabs, demographic, clinical and risk factor data were collected at enrollment in children aged <15 years presenting to an emergency department with an ARI and where cough was a symptom. Swabs were tested by polymerase chain reaction for 17 respiratory viruses and seven respiratory bacteria. Logistic regression was used to investigate associations between child characteristics and codetection of the organisms of interest. Between December 2011 and August 2014, swabs were collected from 817 (93.3%) of 876 enrolled children, median age 27.7 months (interquartile range13.9–60.3 months). Overall, 740 (90.6%) of 817 specimens were positive for any organism. Both viruses and bacteria were detected in 423 specimens (51.8%). Factors associated with codetection were age (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for age <12 months = 4.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.0, 7.9; age 12 to <24 months = 6.0, 95% CI 3.7, 9.8; age 24 to <60 months = 2.4, 95% CI 1.5, 3.9), male gender (aOR 1.46; 95% CI 1.1, 2.0), child care attendance (aOR 2.0; 95% CI 1.4, 2.8) and winter enrollment (aOR 2.0; 95% CI 1.3, 3.0). Haemophilus influenzae dominated the virus–bacteria pairs. Virus–H. influenzae interactions in ARI should be investigated further, especially as the contribution of nontypeable H. influenzae to acute and chronic respiratory diseases is being increasingly recognized.

We consider the problem of centralized routing and scheduling for IEEE 802.16 mesh networks so as to provide Quality of Service (QoS) to individual real and interactive data applications. We first obtain an optimal and fair routing and scheduling policy for aggregate demands for different source- destination pairs. We then present scheduling algorithms which provide per flow QoS guarantees while utilizing the network resources efficiently. Our algorithms are also scalable: they do not require per flow processing and queueing and the computational requirements are modest. We have verified our algorithms via extensive simulations.

Translation initiation from the ribosomal P-site is the specialty of the initiator tRNAs (tRNA(fMet)). Presence of the three consecutive G-C base pairs (G29-C41, G30-C40 and G31-C39) in their anticodon stems, a highly conserved feature of the initiator tRNAs across the three kingdoms of life, has been implicated in their preferential binding to the P-site. How this feature is exploited by ribosomes has remained unclear. Using a genetic screen, we have isolated an Escherichia coli strain, carrying a G122D mutation in folD, which allows initiation with the tRNA(fMet) containing mutations in one, two or all the three G-C base pairs. The strain shows a severe deficiency of methionine and S-adenosylmethionine, and lacks nucleoside methylations in rRNA. Targeted mutations in the methyltransferase genes have revealed a connection between the rRNA modifications and the fundamental process of the initiator tRNA selection by the ribosome.

The structure, bonding and energetics of B2AlHnm (n = 3−6, m = −2 to +1) are compared with corresponding homocyclic boron, aluminum analogues and BAl2Hnm using density functional theory (DFT). Divalent to hexacoordinated boron and aluminum atoms are found in these species. The geometrical and bonding pattern in B2AlH4− is similar to that for B2SiH4. Species with lone pairs on the divalent boron and aluminum atoms are found to be minima on the potential energy surface of B2AlH32−. A dramatic structural diversity is observed in going from B3Hnm to B2AlHnm, BAl2Hnm and Al3Hnm and this is attributable to the preference of lower coordination on aluminum, higher coordination on boron and the higher multicenter bonding capability of boron. The most stable structures of B3H6+, B2AlH5 and BAl2H4− and the trihydrogen bridged structure of Al3H32− show an isostructural relationship, indicating the isolobal analogy between trivalent boron and divalent aluminum anion.

Recently, partially ionic boron (γ-B28) has been predicted and observed in pure boron, in bulk phase and controlled by pressure [Nature, 457 (2009) 863]. By using ab initio evolutionary structure search, we report the prediction of ionic boron at a reduced dimension and ambient pressure, namely, the two-dimensional (2D) ionic boron. This 2D boron structure consists of graphene-like plane and B2 atom pairs, with the P6/mmm space group and 6 atoms in the unit cell, and has lower energy than the previously reported α-sheet structure and its analogues. Its dynamical and thermal stability are confirmed by the phonon-spectrum and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, this phase exhibits double Dirac cones with massless Dirac fermions due to the significant charge transfer between the graphene-like plane and B2 pair that enhances the energetic stability of the P6/mmm boron. A Fermi velocity (vf) as high as 2.3 x 106 m/s, which is even higher than that of graphene (0.82 x 106 m/s), is predicted for the P6/mmm boron. The present work is the first report of the 2D ionic boron at atmospheric pressure. The unique electronic structure renders the 2D ionic boron a promising 2D material for applications in nanoelectronics.

The half-sandwhich ruthenium chloro complexes bearing chelated diphosphazane ligands, [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl{kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] [R = C6H3Me2-2,6] (1) and [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuCl{kappa(2)-P, P-X2PN(R)PYY'}] [R = Me, X = Y = Y' = OC6H5 (2); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = Y' = OC6H5 (3) or OC6H4'Bu-4 (4)] have been prepared by the reaction of CpRu(PPh3)(2)Cl with (RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2) [R = C6H3Me2-2,6 (L-1)] or by the reaction of [Cp*RuCl2](n) with X2PN(R)PYY' in the presence of zinc dust. Among the four diastereomers (two enantiomeric pairs) possible for the "chiral at metal" complexes 3 and 4, only two diastereomers (one enantiomeric pair) are formed in these reactions. The complexes 1, 2, 4 and [(eta(5)-Cp)RuCl {kappa(2)-P,P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)] [Y = Ph (5) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)-(6)] react with NaOMe to give the corresponding hydride complexes [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}] (7), [(eta(5)-Cp*)RuH {kappa(2)-P,P'-X2PN(R)PY2)] [R = Me, X = Y = OC6H5 (8); R = CHMe2, X-2 = C20H12O2, Y = OC6H4'Bu-4 (9)] and [(eta(5) -Cp)RuH(kappa(2)-P, P-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPhY)][Y =Ph (10) or N2C3HMe2-3,5 (SCSPRRu)(11a) and (SCSPSRu)-(11b)]. Only one enantiomeric pair of the hydride 9 is obtained from the chloro precursor 4 that bears sterically bulky substituents at the phosphorus centers. On the other hand, the optically pure trichiral complex 6 that bears sterically less bulky substituents at the phosphorus gives a mixture of two diastereomers (11a and 11b). Protonation of complex 7 using different acids (HX) gives a mixture of [(eta(5)- Cp)Ru(eta(2)-H-2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2))]X (12a) and [(eta(5)-Cp)Ru(H)(2){kappa(2)-P, P-(RO)(2)PN(Me)P(OR)(2)}]X (12b) of which 12a is the major product independent of the acid used; the dihydrogen nature of 12a is established by T, measurements and also by synthesizing the deuteride analogue 7-D followed by protonation to obtain the D-H isotopomer. Preliminary investigations on asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of 2-acetonaphthone in the presence of a series of chiral diphosphazane ligands show that diphosphazanes in which the phosphorus centers are strong pi-acceptor in character and bear sterically bulky substituents impart moderate levels of enantioselectivity. Attempts to identify the hydride intermediate involved in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation by a model reaction suggests that a complex of the type, [Ru(H)(Cl){kappa(2)-P,P-X2PN(R)PY2)(solvent)(2)] could be the active species in this transformation. Silicon particle detectors are used in several applications and will clearly require better hardness against particle radiation in the future large scale experiments than can be provided today. To achieve this goal, more irradiation studies with defect generating bombarding particles are needed. Protons can be considered as important bombarding species, although neutrons and electrons are perhaps the most widely used particles in such irradiation studies. Protons provide unique possibilities, as their defect production rates are clearly higher than those of neutrons and electrons, and, their damage creation in silicon is most similar to the that of pions. This thesis explores the development and testing of an irradiation facility that provides the cooling of the detector and on-line electrical characterisation, such as current-voltage (IV) and capacitance-voltage (CV) measurements. This irradiation facility, which employs a 5-MV tandem accelerator, appears to function well, but some disadvantageous limitations are related to MeV-proton irradiation of silicon particle detectors. Typically, detectors are in non-operational mode during irradiation (i.e., without the applied bias voltage). However, in real experiments the detectors are biased; the ionising proton generates electron-hole pairs, and a rise in rate of proton flux may cause the detector to breakdown. This limits the proton flux for the irradiation of biased detectors. In this work, it is shown that, if detectors are irradiated and kept operational, the electric field decreases the introduction rate of negative space-charges and current-related damage. The effects of various particles with different energies are scaled to each others by the non-ionising energy loss (NIEL) hypothesis. The type of defects induced by irradiation depends on the energy used, and this thesis also discusses the minimum proton energy required at which the NIEL-scaling is valid.

To understand structural and thermodynamic features of disulfides within an alpha-helix, a non-redundant dataset comprising of 5025 polypeptide chains containing 2311 disulfides was examined. Thirty-five examples were found of intrahelical disulfides involving a CXXC motif between the N-Cap and third helical positions. GLY and PRO were the most common amino acids at positions 1 and 2, respectively. The N-Cap residue for disulfide bonded CXXC motifs had average values of (-112 +/- 25.2 degrees, 106 +/- 25.4 degrees). To further explore conformational requirements for intrahelical disulfides, CYS pairs were introduced at positions N-Cap-3; 1,4; 7,10 in two helices of an Escherichia coli thioredoxin mutant lacking its active site disulfide (nSS Trx). In both helices, disulfides formed spontaneously during purification only at positions N-Cap-3. Mutant stabilities were characterized by chemical denaturation studies (in both oxidized and reduced states) and differential scanning calorimetry (oxidized state only). All oxidized as well as reduced mutants were destabilized relative to nSS Trx. All mutants were redox active, but showed decreased activity relative to wild-type thioredoxin. Such engineered disulfides can be used to probe helix start sites in proteins of unknown structure and to introduce redox activity into proteins. Conversely, a protein with CYS residues at positions N-Cap and 3 of an alpha-helix is likely to have redox activity.

This research explored the feasibility of using multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis in novel combination with other techniques to study comprehension of epistemic adverbs expressing doubt and certainty (e.g., evidently, obviously, probably) as they relate to health communication in clinical settings. In Study 1, Australian English speakers performed a dissimilarity-rating task with sentence pairs containing the target stimuli, presented as "doctors' opinions". Ratings were analyzed using a combination of cultural consensus analysis (factor analysis across participants), weighted-data classical-MDS, and cluster analysis. Analyses revealed strong within-community consistency for a 3-dimensional semantic space solution that took into account individual differences, strong statistical acceptability of the MDS results in terms of stress and explained variance, and semantic configurations that were interpretable in terms of linguistic analyses of the target adverbs. The results confirmed the feasibility of using MDS in this context. Study 2 replicated the results with Canadian English speakers on the same task. Semantic analyses and stress decomposition analysis were performed on the Australian and Canadian data sets, revealing similarities and differences between the two groups. Overall, the results support using MDS to study comprehension of words critical for health communication, including in future studies, for example, second language speaking patients and/or practitioners. More broadly, the results indicate that the techniques described should be promising for comprehension studies in many communicative domains, in both clinical settings and beyond, and including those targeting other aspects of language and focusing on comparisons across different speech communities.

This article presents and evaluates Quantum Inspired models of Target Activation using Cued-Target Recall Memory Modelling over multiple sources of Free Association data. Two components were evaluated: Whether Quantum Inspired models of Target Activation would provide a better framework than their classical psychological counterparts and how robust these models are across the different sources of Free Association data. In previous work, a formal model of cued-target recall did not exist and as such Target Activation was unable to be assessed directly. Further to that, the data source used was suspected of suffering from temporal and geographical bias. As a consequence, Target Activation was measured against cued-target recall data as an approximation of performance. Since then, a formal model of cued-target recall (PIER3) has been developed [10] with alternative sources of data also becoming available. This allowed us to directly model target activation in cued-target recall with human cued-target recall pairs and use multiply sources of Free Association Data. Featural Characteristics known to be important to Target Activation were measured for each of the data sources to identify any major differences that may explain variations in performance for each of the models. Each of the activation models were used in the PIER3 memory model for each of the data sources and was benchmarked against cued-target recall pairs provided by the University of South Florida (USF). Two methods where used to evaluate performance. The first involved measuring the divergence between the sets of results using the Kullback Leibler (KL) divergence with the second utilizing a previous statistical analysis of the errors [9]. Of the three sources of data, two were sourced from human subjects being the USF Free Association Norms and the University of Leuven (UL) Free Association Networks. The third was sourced from a new method put forward by Galea and Bruza, 2015 in which pseudo Free Association Networks (Corpus Based Association Networks - CANs) are built using co-occurrence statistics on large text corpus. It was found that the Quantum Inspired Models of Target Activation not only outperformed the classical psychological model but was more robust across a variety of data sources.

The frugivorous 'true' fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Queensland fruit fly), is presumed to have a non-resourced-based lek mating system. This is largely untested, and contrary data exists to suggest Bactrocera tryoni may have a resource-based mating system focused on fruiting host plants. We tested the mating system of Bactrocera tryoni, and its close sibling Bactrocera neohumeralis, in large field cages using laboratory reared flies. We used observational experiments that allowed us to determine if: - (i) mating pairs were aggregated or non-aggregated; - (ii) mating system was resource or non-resource based; - (iii) flies utilised possible landmarks (tall trees over short) as mate-rendezvous sites, and; - (iv) males called females from male-dominated leks. We recorded nearly 250 Bactrocera tryoni mating pairs across all experiments, revealing that: - (i) mating pairs were aggregated; - (ii) mating nearly always occurred in tall trees over short; - (iii) mating was non-resource based, and; - (iv) that males and females arrived at the mate-rendezvous site together with no evidence that males preceded females. Bactrocera neohumeralis copulations were much more infrequent (only 30 mating pairs in total), but for those pairs there was a similar preference for tall trees and no evidence of a resource-based mating system. Some aspects of Bactrocera tryoni mating behaviour align with theoretical expectations of a lekking system, but others do not. Until evidence for unequivocal female choice can be provided (as predicted under a true lek), the mating system of Bactrocera tryoni is best described as a non-resource based, aggregation system for which we also have evidence that land-marking may be involved. Room temperature, magnesium ion-conducting molten electrolytes are prepared using a combination of acetamide, urea and magnesium triflate or magnesium perchlorate. The molten liquids show high ionic conductivity, of the order of mS cm(-1) at 298 K. Vibrational spectroscopic studies based on triflate/perchlorate bands reveal that the free ion concentration is higher than that of ion-pairs and aggregates in the melt. Electrochemical reversibility of magnesium deposition and dissolution is demonstrated using cyclic voltammetry and impedance studies. The transport number of Mg2+ ion determined by means of a combination of d.c. and ac. techniques is similar to 0.40. Preliminary studies on the battery characteristics reveal good capacity for the magnesium rechargeable cell and open up the possibility of using this unique class of acetamide-based room temperature molten electrolytes in secondary magnesium batteries. Sporadic instances of tetrasomaty in the primary and secondary roots of five varieties ofCicer arietinum Linn. are illustrated. The phenomenon was more common in Varieties I and II. The SAT-chromosomes are reliable guides to estimate the degree of polysomaty, since pre-treatment withp-dichlorobenzene revealed that cell types with 32 chromosomes at metaphase had two pairs of SAT-chromosomes associated with the nucleolus at prophase. Tetrasomatic cells appear to be limited to the dermatogen and periblem. Higher degrees of polysomaty were not observed.
