DopSCAT: A mission concept for simultaneous measurements of marine winds and surface currents

A radar scatterometer operates by transmitting a pulse of microwave energy toward the ocean's surface and measuring the normalized (per-unit-surface) radar backscatter coefficient (σ°). The primary application of scatterometry is the measurement of near-surface ocean winds. By combining σ° measurements from different azimuth angles, the 10 m vector wind can be determined through a Geophysical Model Function (GMF), which relates wind and backscatter. This paper proposes a mission concept for the measurement of both oceanic winds and surface currents, which makes full use of earlier C-band radar remote sensing experience. For the determination of ocean currents, in particular, the novel idea of using two chirps of opposite slope is introduced. The fundamental processing steps required to retrieve surface currents are given together with their associated accuracies. A detailed description of the mission proposal and comparisons between real and retrieved surface currents are presented. The proposed ocean Doppler scatterometer can be used to generate global surface ocean current maps with accuracies better than 0.2 m/s at a spatial resolution better than 25 km (i.e., 12.5 km spatial sampling) on a daily basis. These maps will allow gaining some insights on the upper ocean mesoscale dynamics. The work lies at a frontier, given that the present inability to measure ocean currents from space in a consistent and synoptic manner represents one of the greatest weaknesses in ocean remote sensing.

On the fly type specialization without type analysis

Les langages de programmation typés dynamiquement tels que JavaScript et Python repoussent la vérification de typage jusqu’au moment de l’exécution. Afin d’optimiser la performance de ces langages, les implémentations de machines virtuelles pour langages dynamiques doivent tenter d’éliminer les tests de typage dynamiques redondants. Cela se fait habituellement en utilisant une analyse d’inférence de types. Cependant, les analyses de ce genre sont souvent coûteuses et impliquent des compromis entre le temps de compilation et la précision des résultats obtenus. Ceci a conduit à la conception d’architectures de VM de plus en plus complexes. Nous proposons le versionnement paresseux de blocs de base, une technique de compilation à la volée simple qui élimine efficacement les tests de typage dynamiques redondants sur les chemins d’exécution critiques. Cette nouvelle approche génère paresseusement des versions spécialisées des blocs de base tout en propageant de l’information de typage contextualisée. Notre technique ne nécessite pas l’utilisation d’analyses de programme coûteuses, n’est pas contrainte par les limitations de précision des analyses d’inférence de types traditionnelles et évite la complexité des techniques d’optimisation spéculatives. Trois extensions sont apportées au versionnement de blocs de base afin de lui donner des capacités d’optimisation interprocédurale. Une première extension lui donne la possibilité de joindre des informations de typage aux propriétés des objets et aux variables globales. Puis, la spécialisation de points d’entrée lui permet de passer de l’information de typage des fonctions appellantes aux fonctions appellées. Finalement, la spécialisation des continuations d’appels permet de transmettre le type des valeurs de retour des fonctions appellées aux appellants sans coût dynamique. Nous démontrons empiriquement que ces extensions permettent au versionnement de blocs de base d’éliminer plus de tests de typage dynamiques que toute analyse d’inférence de typage statique.

Unfinished Turns in French: How Context Matters

On occasions, speakers do not complete their turns in conversation. Such syntactically-incomplete turns are not treated with repair or misunderstanding. The responses that they receive display a clear understanding of the actions that the unfinished turns embodied. In this article, using conversation analysis (CA), I describe the systematic occurrence of unfinished turns in French conversation. I show that context is necessary to the understanding of this type of turn and I describe the nature of that context. Data analysis reveals that unfinished turns are understandable primarily by reference to their sequential position. I conclude that unfinished turns are a locally- managed resource fitted to the particulars of the talk in progress and built upon the context that the sequences that house them have so far provided.

Cet essai est présenté en tant que mémoire de maîtrise dans le cadre du programme de droit des technologies de l’information. Ce mémoire traite de différents modèles d’affaires qui ont pour caractéristique commune de commercialiser les données dans le contexte des technologies de l’information. Les pratiques commerciales observées sont peu connues et l’un des objectifs est d’informer le lecteur quant au fonctionnement de ces pratiques. Dans le but de bien situer les enjeux, cet essai discutera d’abord des concepts théoriques de vie privée et de protection des renseignements personnels. Une fois ce survol tracé, les pratiques de « data brokerage », de « cloud computing » et des solutions « analytics » seront décortiquées. Au cours de cette description, les enjeux juridiques soulevés par chaque aspect de la pratique en question seront étudiés. Enfin, le dernier chapitre de cet essai sera réservé à deux enjeux, soit le rôle du consentement et la sécurité des données, qui ne relèvent pas d’une pratique commerciale spécifique, mais qui sont avant tout des conséquences directes de l’évolution des technologies de l’information.

Identification of Hotspots in the European Union for the Introduction of Four Zoonotic Arboviroses by Live Animal Trade

Live animal trade is considered a major mode of introduction of viruses from enzootic foci into disease-free areas. Due to societal and behavioural changes, some wild animal species may nowadays be considered as pet species. The species diversity of animals involved in international trade is thus increasing. This could benefit pathogens that have a broad host range such as arboviruses. The objective of this study was to analyze the risk posed by live animal imports for the introduction, in the European Union (EU), of four arboviruses that affect human and horses: Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis. Importation data for a five-years period (2005-2009, extracted from the EU TRACES database), environmental data (used as a proxy for the presence of vectors) and horses and human population density data (impacting the occurrence of clinical cases) were combined to derive spatially explicit risk indicators for virus introduction and for the potential consequences of such introductions. Results showed the existence of hotspots where the introduction risk was the highest in Belgium, in the Netherlands and in the north of Italy. This risk was higher for Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) than for the three other diseases. It was mainly attributed to exotic pet species such as rodents, reptiles or cage birds, imported in small-sized containments from a wide variety of geographic origins. The increasing species and origin diversity of these animals may have in the future a strong impact on the risk of introduction of arboviruses in the EU.

OF STAGE OF THE ACADEMY: THE CONSTRUCTION DRAMATURGY OF MÃO NA LUVA, BY ODUVALDO VIANNA FILHO

Anchoring on the studies of Ubersfeld (2005), Ryngaert (1996), Pallottini (1998), Pavis (1999), Magaldi (1984, 1997) about the way of structuring of theatrical text, as well as the symbolic structuring of Chevalier and Gueerbrant (1998), this work presents as object, the analysis of the characters' speeches Ele and Ela contained in the dramatic text Mão na luva (1966), by the playwright Oduvaldo Vianna Filho. The work approaches the dynamics of the relationships between the characters seeking to analyze in a specific way the dramatic construction of Vianna Filho, observing the author's peculiar aspects and the questionable relationship between text and representation. We want to show, through the strategies of construction of the text, the poetic view of the playwright, looking for the understanding of the nuances of the social-political discourse contained in the piece, that supplies, among other aspects, important characteristics to be considered  in the analytic ambit: the identity, the social and financial situation that the protagonists are, the political-ideological convictions and the power relationships observed in a great part of the dialogues. It's important to point out that all these subjects are fundamental for the process of diegetic understanding; once, unavoidably, being generating sources of conflict.

OS RITUAIS SIMBÓLICOS NA LÍRICA DE ADÉLIA MARIA WOELLNER

A presente investigação tem como objetivo tecer considerações acerca da presença dos rituais simbólicos na lírica da poeta curitibana Adélia Maria Woellner. A opção pelas obras de Woellner justifica-se pela relevância da obra da autora no quadro mais amplo da literatura paranaense e brasileira, além do reconhecimento que sua obra tem atingido no exterior. Serão analisados poemas em que se nota a presença de mitos, imagens e símbolos de povos distintos, como, por exemplo, da cultura judaica, grega e chinesa, buscando demonstrar a influência da memória mítica no fazer poético de Woellner, a partir dos mitemas presentes nos poemas e por meio das imagens e símbolos utilizados na construção poética, salientando que também a retomada dos mitos antigos apresenta-se como uma forma de rememoração do passado. Visa-se, ainda, observar como o tema da memória, na lírica woellneriana, encontra-se ligado à representação simbólica, ou seja, a influência que a memória exerce sobre as imagens e símbolos, alguns de caráter universal, dos quais a poeta se utiliza. A presente pesquisa bibliográfica está embasada na Teoria do imaginário, na Sociologia e na Mitocrítica, amparando-se na perspectiva teórica de autores como Mircea Eliade, Gaston Bachelard, Gilbert Durand, Octavio Paz, e Chevalier & Gheerbrant.

Alejandra Pizarnik y el Deseo de Trascender Las Fronteras del Lenguaje

Trascender las fronteras del lenguaje fue una de las grandes obsesiones de la escritora argentina Alejandra Pizarnik (1936-1972). Con una breve carrera literaria interrumpida por el suicidio, Pizarnik dejó una obra que revela una relación vital con su escritura. Buscando al máximo la unión entre poesía y vida al dedicarse totalmente a la tarea literaria, registró el deseo de escribir el poema con el propio cuerpo, convirtiéndose en su absoluto verbal. De este intento tenemos como resultado una escritura que revela una variedad de artificios para burlar los límites del lenguaje. La propuesta de este trabajo es discutir uno de estos artificios, la creación del doble, una reiterada estrategia utilizada por Alejandra. Para este fin, fue fundamental analizar  importantes obras que la influenciaron, tal como: El teatro y su doble de Antonin Artaud que presenta la idea de que tanto en el teatro como en la poesía es necesario destruir el lenguaje para alcanzar la vida, extendiendo así las fronteras de la realidad. Para desnudar la necesidad de Pizarnik de unirse al poema, fue necesario un acercamiento a la obra de Octavio Paz, otra revelada influencia. Octavio Paz revela la imposibilidad de la tarea surrealista de unir hombres y poesía ya que para él abolir tal distancia sería hacer desaparecer el lenguaje. Consciente de tal imposibilidad, Alejandra, comulgando con el surrealismo, forja simulacros de nuevas realidades donde no existen fronteras. Teniendo como cable conductor las ideas de Artaud y Octavio Paz, nuestro trabajo busca analizar ese intento, teniendo como foco la creación del doble.

Histórias de Gatos Livres na Literatura Infantil de Sylvia Orthof

Sylvia Orthof (1932-1997) consagrou-se como uma das mais importantes escritoras da literatura infantil brasileira. Entre suas temáticas recorrentes, os animais não humanos figuram em profusão, assim sendo, este estudo objetiva verificar a destacada presença dos gatos na obra da autora arrolada, e mais especificamente os bichanos não domésticos vivenciando momentos de especial cumplicidade com outros seres não humanos. Para tanto, realiza a análise dos seguintes textos zooliterários - o conto de animais História engatada e da fábula poética Gato pra cá, rato pra lá. As formulações críticas e teóricas, nomeadamente, de Jacques Derrida (2011) e (2003), Nelly Novaes Coelho (1991) e Fanny Abramovich (1999) fundamentam a leitura.
