The contributions of the concrete slab and composite action to the vertical shear strength of continuous steel-concrete composite beams are ignored in current design codes, which result in conservative designs. This paper investigates the ultimate strength of continuous composite beams in combined bending and shear by using the finite element analysis method. A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed to account for the geometric and material nonlinear behaviour of continuous composite beams. The finite element model is verified by experimental results and then used to study the effects of the concrete slab and shear connection on the vertical shear strength. The moment-shear interaction strength of continuous composite beams is also investigated by varying the moment/ shear ratio. It is shown that the concrete slab and composite action significantly increase the ultimate strength of continuous composite beams. Based on numerical results, design models are proposed for the vertical shear strength and moment-shear interaction of continuous composite beams. The proposed design models, which incorporates the effects of the concrete slab, composite action, stud pullout failure and web shear buckling, are compared with experimental results with good agreement. Despite experimental evidences, the contributions of the concrete slab and composite action to the vertical shear strength of simply supported steel-concrete composite beams are not considered in current design codes, which lead to conservative designs. In this paper, the finite element method is used to investigate the flexural and shear strengths of simply supported composite beams under combined bending and shear. A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed to account for geometric and material nonlinear behavior of composite beams, and verified by experimental results. The verified finite element model is than employed to quantify the contributions of the concrete slab and composite action to the moment and shear capacities of composite beams. The effect of the degree of shear connection on the vertical shear strength of deep composite beams loaded in shear is studied. Design models for vertical shear strength including contributions from the concrete slab and composite action and for the ultimate moment-shear interaction ate proposed for the design of simply supported composite beams in combined bending and shear. The proposed design models provide a consistent and economical design procedure for simply supported composite beams.

While the general mechanisms of hot tearing are understood, i.e. the inability of liquid to feed imposed strain on the mushy material, work continues on improving the understanding of the mechanisms at play. A hot tear test rig that measures the temperature and load imposed on the mushy zone during solidification has been successfully used to study hot tearing. The mould has now been modified to incorporate a window above the hot spot region to allow observation of hot tear formation and growth. Combining information from visual observation with load and temperature data has led to a better understanding of the mechanism of hot tearing. Tests were carried out on an Al-0.5 wt-% Cu alloy. It was found that load development began at about 90% solid and a hot tear formed a short time later, at between 93% and 96% solid. Hot tearing started at a very low load.

The depths of cracks in desiccating plastic concrete are estimated by considering the effects of the suction (negative pore pressure) associated with desiccation and applying five failure models derived from fracture, theories combined with theories drawn from geotechnical engineering under the assumption that plastic concrete is a frictional particulate material. The estimated crack depths vary with the depth of desiccation, the suction profile, and a small number of material parameters that depend on the model adopted and are comparatively easy to estimate accurately. Four of the models predict excessively large crack depths. The fifth, however, predicts shallower crack depths that increase with the age of the concrete and are consistent with those of analogous desiccation cracks in coal mine tailings. It thus offers a relatively robust method of estimating the depth of desiccation cracks. Confirmation of this with data for plastic concrete is clearly desirable but not possible at present.

Many potential applications for sintered aluminium are limited by the poor fatigue properties of the material. In order to increase understanding of the fatigue mechanisms in sintered aluminium, fatigue tests were carried out on a sintered 2xxx series aluminium alloy, AMB-2712. The alloy has a fatigue endurance strength of approximately 145 MPa (R = 0.1). Three regions were identified on the fatigue fracture surfaces. Region I contains the initiation site and transgranular crack propagation. When the size of the cyclic plastic zone ahead of the crack becomes comparable to the grain size, microstructural damage at the crack tip results in a transition to intergranular propagation. Region 2 mainly contains intergranularly fractured material, whilst the final fracture area makes up Region 3, in the form of dimple coalescence and intergranular failure. Transgranular fractographic features observed on fatigued specimens include fissure-type striations, cross-hatched grains, furrowed grains and grains containing step-like features. This paper is devoted to modeling elastic behavior of laminated composite shells, with special emphasis on incorporating interfacial imperfection. The conditions of imposing traction continuity and displacement jump across each interface are used to model imperfect interfaces. Vanishing transverse shear stresses on two free surfaces of a shell eliminate the need for shear correction factors. A linear theory underlying elastostatics and kinetics of laminated composite shells in a general configuration is presented from Hamilton's principle. In the special case of vanishing interfacial parameters, this theory reduces to the conventional third-order zigzag theory for perfectly bonded laminated shells. Numerical results for bending and vibration problems of laminated circular cylindrical panels are tabulated and plotted to indicate the influence of the interfacial imperfection.

Long period gratings (LPGs) were written into a D-shaped single-mode fiber. These LPGs were subjected to a range of curvatures, and it was found that as curvature increased, there was increasingly strong coupling to certain higher order cladding modes without the usual splitting of the LPGs stopbands. A bend-induced stopband yielded a spectral sensitivity of 12.55 nm·m for curvature and 2.2×10-2 nm°C-1 for temperature. It was also found that the wavelength separation between adjacent bend-induced stopbands varied linearly as a function of curvature. Blue and red wavelength shifts of the stopbands were observed as the sensor was rotated around a fixed axis for a given curvature; thus, in principle, this sensor could be used to obtain bending and orientational information. The behavior of the stopbands was successfully modeled using a finite element approach.

A novel, direction-sensitive bending sensor based on an asymmetric fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed by an infrared femtosecond laser was demonstrated. The technique is based on tight transverse confinement of the femto-inscribed structures and can be directly applied in conventional, untreated singlemode fibers. The FBG structure was inscribed by an amplified, titanium sapphire laser system. The grating cross-section was elongated along the direction of the laser beam with the transverse dimensions of approximately 1 by 2 μm. It was suggested that the sensitivity of the device can be improved by inscribing smaller spatial features and by implementing more complex grating designs aimed at maximizing the effect of strain.

A femtosecond laser has been used to asymmetrically modify the cladding of fiber containing long-period gratings. Following modification, devices in single-mode fiber are shown to be capable of sensing the magnitude and direction of bending in one plane by producing blue and red wavelength shifts depending upon the orientation of the bend. The resulting curvature sensitivities were -1.62 and +3.82 nm·m. Devices have also been produced using an elliptical core fiber to study the effects of the cladding modification on the two polarization eigenstates. A cladding modification applied on the fast axis of the fiber is shown to affect the light in the fast axis much more significantly than the light in the orthogonal state; this behavior may ultimately lead to a sensor capable of detecting the direction of bending in two dimensions for applications in shape sensing.
