OBJECTIVE: To inform public health approaches to problem gambling by examining how the news media covers problem gambling, with a particular focus on the causes, consequences and solutions to problem gambling, and the 'actors' and sources who influence media coverage. METHODS: A qualitative content analysis guided by framing theory analysed coverage of problem gambling in Australian newspapers in the period 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012. RESULTS: Solutions to problem gambling were more frequently discussed than causes and consequences. A focus on the responsibility of individuals was preferred to reporting that focused on broader social, ecological, and industry determinants of problem gambling. Reporting was highly politicised, with politicians frequently quoted and political issues frequently discussed. In contrast, the community sector, health professionals and problem gamblers were rarely quoted. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: This analysis has revealed the need for a more proactive, coordinated approach to the media by both public health researchers and health groups. The establishment of a gambling-specific coalition to push for evidence-based reform is recommended.

The emergence of new media—including branded websites, social media and mobile applications—has created additional touch points for unhealthy food and beverage companies to target children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to perform an audit of new media for three top selling food and beverage brands in Australia. The top selling brand in three of the most advertised food and beverage categories was identified. Facebook, websites and mobile phone applications from these three brands were assessed using a combination of descriptive analyses and structured data collection during June and July 2013. Information on target audience, main focus of the activity, marketing strategies employed and connectivity were collected. Promotional activities were assessed against industry self-regulatory codes. McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Cadbury Dairy Milk were audited, with 21 promotional activities identified. These promotional activities appeared to use a number of marketing strategies, with frequent use of indirect product association, engagement techniques and branding. We identified strategic targeting of both children and adolescents. We found that while all promotional activities technically met self-regulatory codes (usually due to media-specific age restrictions) a number appeared to employ unhealthy food or beverage marketing directed to children. Brands are using engaging content via new media aimed at children and adolescents to promote unhealthy food and beverages. Given the limitations of self-regulatory codes in the context of new media, strategies need to be developed to reduce exposure of children and adolescents to marketing of unhealthy food and beverage products via these avenues.

The development of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, by Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton has prompted diverse coverage from print and online media. This investigation looked at trends in news stories and commentary from 2005-10 to show how the location of a medium affected coverage. Through the author’s own observations and interviews with journalists and other interested parties, several trends emerged. Media outlets outside Arkansas portrayed the museum as trying to plunder the cultural heritage of local communities and relied partly on the museum’s association with Wal-Mart and stereotypes of Arkansas to frame coverage. Arkansas media, faced with limited cooperation from the museum’s public relations apparatus, typically played a cheerleader role, at times overemphasizing the importance of the collection in the art world and showcasing few critical voices in stories about acquisitions and other areas of the museum’s development.

In this article we consider the Australian beach as a material, imaginary and social arena in which different versions of national belonging are performed and contested. Focusing on two short films produced by young people from refugee backgrounds, we explore the negotiation of national belonging on the beach by people who occupy identity categories that are typically excluded from idealising Australian beach mythologies. We argue that both the production and distribution of these films contribute to a reimagining of the Australian beach that creates new opportunities for people from migrant backgrounds to engage in the co-production of Australian identities in their own terms.

During Leg 123, abundant and well-preserved Neocomian radiolarians were recovered at Site 765 (Argo Abyssal Plain) and Site 766 (lower Exmouth Plateau). The assemblages are characterized by a scarcity or absence of Tethyan taxa. The Berriasian-early Aptian radiolarian record recovered at Site 765 is unique in its density of well-preserved samples and in its faunal contents. Remarkable contrasts exist between radiolarian assemblages extracted from claystones of Site 765 and reexamined DSDP Site 261, and faunas recovered from radiolarian sand layers of Site 765. Clay faunas are unusual in their low diversity of apparently ecologically tolerant species, whereas sand faunas are dominated by non-Tethyan species that have never been reported before. Comparisons with Sites 766 and 261, as well as sedimentological observations, lead to the conclusion that this faunal contrast results from a difference in provenance, rather than from hydraulic sorting. Biostratigraphic dating proved difficult principally because of the paucity or even absence of (Tethyan) species used in published zonations. In addition, published zonations are contradictory and do not reflect total ranges of species. Radiolarian assemblages recovered from claystones at Sites 765 and 261 in the Argo Basin reflect restricted oceanic conditions for the latest Jurassic to Barremian time period. Neither the sedimentary facies nor the faunal associations bear any resemblance to sediment and radiolarian facies observed in typical Tethyan sequences. I conclude that the Argo Basin was paleoceanographically separated from Tethys during the Late Jurassic and part of the Early Cretaceous by its position at a higher paleolatitude and by enclosing landmasses, i.e., northeastern India and the Shillong Block, which were adjacent to the northwestern Australian margin before the opening. Assemblages recovered from radiolarian sand layers are dominated by non-Tethyan species that are interpreted as circumantarctic. Their sudden appearance in the late Berriasian/early Valanginian pre-dates the oceanization of the Indo-Australian break-up (Ml 1, late Valanginian) by about 5 m.y., but coincides with a sharp increase in margin-derived pelagic turbidites. The Indo-Australian rift zone and its adjacent margins probably were submerged deeply enough to allow an intermittent "spillover" of circumantarctic cold water into the Argo Basin, creating increased bottom current activity. Circumantarctic cold-water radiolarians transported into the Argo Basin upwelled along the margin and died en masse. Concomitant winnowing by bottom currents led to their accumulation in distinct radiolarite layers. High rates of faunal change and the sharp increase of bottom current activity are thought to be synchronous with the two pronounced late Berriasian-early Valanginian lowstands in sea level. Hypothetically, both phenomena might have been caused by a glaciation on the Antarctic-Australian continent, which was for the first time isolated from the rest of Gondwana by oceanic seaways as a result of Jurassic and Early Cretaceous seafloor spreading. The absence of typical Tethyan radiolarian species during the late Valanginian to late Hauterivian period is interpreted as reflecting a time of strong influx of circumantarctic cold water following oceanization (Mil) and rapid spreading between southeast India and western Australia. The reappearance and gradual increase in abundance and diversity of Tethyan forms along with the still dominant circumantarctic species are thought to result from overall more equitable climatic conditions during the Barremian and early Aptian and may have resulted from the establishment of an oceanic connection with the Tethys Ocean during the early Aptian.

Time-variable gravity data from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission are used to study total water content over Australia for the period 2002–2010. A time-varying annual signal explains 61% of the variance of the data, in good agreement with two independent estimates of the same quantity from hydrological models. Water mass content variations across Australia are linked to Pacific and Indian Ocean variability, associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), respectively. From 1989, positive (negative) IOD phases were related to anomalously low (high) precipitation in southeastern Australia, associated with a reduced (enhanced) tropical moisture flux. In particular, the sustained water mass content reduction over central and southern regions of Australia during the period 2006–2008 is associated with three consecutive positive IOD events.

Experiments have been carried out in sulfuric and perchloric acid solutions on Pt(S)[n(110) × (100)] electrodes. The comparison between the two different electrolytic media reveals an important influence of the anion in the voltammetric features. Total charge curves have been obtained with the CO charge displacement method in combination with voltammetric measurements. From these curves, the dependence of the pztc with the step density and the strength of the anion adsorption have been analyzed. The problem of the so-called third peak is treated for a series of electrodes that contain (110) terraces, revealing the requirement of (110) domains for occurrence of this adsorption state.

The electroreduction of nitrate on Pt(1 0 0) electrodes in phosphate buffer neutral solution, pH 7.2, is reported. The sensitivity of the reaction to the crystallographic order of the surface is studied through the controlled introduction of defects by using stepped surfaces with (1 0 0) terraces of different length separated by monoatomic steps, either with (1 1 1) or (1 1 0) symmetry. The results of this study show that nitrate reduction occurs mainly on the well defined (1 0 0) terraces in the potential region where H adsorption starts to decrease, allowing the nitrate anion to access the surface. Adsorbed NO has been detected as a stable intermediate in this media. An oxidation process observed at 0.8 V has been identified as leading to the formation of adsorbed NO and being responsible for a secondary reduction process observed in the subsequent negative scan. Using in situ FTIRS, ammonium was found to be the main product of nitrate reduction. This species can be oxidized at high potentials resulting in adsorbed NO and nitrate (probably with nitrite as intermediate).

Desalinated brackish groundwater is becoming a new source of water supply to comply with growing water demands, especially in (semi-) arid countries. Recent publications show that some chemical compounds may persist in an unaltered form after the desalination processes and that there is an associated risk of mixing waters with different salinity for irrigation. At the university of Alicante campus (Spain), a mix of desalinated brackish groundwater and water from the existing aquifer is currently applied for landscape irrigation. The presence of 209 emerging compounds, surfactants, priority substances according to the 2008/105/EC Directive, 11 heavy metals and microbiological organisms in blended water and aquifer samples was investigated. Thirty-five compounds were detected (pesticides, pharmaceuticals and surfactants) among them two priority substances α-endosulfan and Ni were found above the permitted maximum concentration. Blended water used for landscape irrigation during the summer period is supersaturated with respect to carbonates, which may ultimately lead to mineral precipitation in the soil-aquifer media and changes in hydraulic parameters.

In this paper we deal with parameterized linear inequality systems in the n-dimensional Euclidean space, whose coefficients depend continuosly on an index ranging in a compact Hausdorff space. The paper is developed in two different parametric settings: the one of only right-hand-side perturbations of the linear system, and that in which both sides of the system can be perturbed. Appealing to the backgrounds on the calmness property, and exploiting the specifics of the current linear structure, we derive different characterizations of the calmness of the feasible set mapping, and provide an operative expresion for the calmness modulus when confined to finite systems. In the paper, the role played by the Abadie constraint qualification in relation to calmness is clarified, and illustrated by different examples. We point out that this approach has the virtue of tackling the calmness property exclusively in terms of the system’s data.
