Deep-sea sediment samples from three Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 112 sites on the Peru continental margin were investigated, using a number of organic geochemical and organic petrographic techniques, for amounts and compositions of the organic matter preserved. Preliminary results include mass accumulation rates of organic carbon at Site 679 and characteristics of the organic facies for sediments from Sites 679, 681, and 684. Organic-carbon contents are high, with few exceptions. Particularly high values were determined in the Pliocene interval at Site 684 (4%-7.5%) and in the early Pliocene to Quaternary section of Hole 679D (2%-9%). Older sediments at this site have distinctively lower organic-carbon contents (0.2%-2.5%). Mass accumulation rates of organic matter at Site 679 are 0.02 to 0.07 g carbon/cm**2/k.y. for late Miocene to early Pliocene sediments and higher by a factor of 5 to 10 in the Quaternary sediments. The organic matter in all samples has a predominantly marine planktonic and bacterial origin, with minor terrigenous contribution. Organic particle sizes are strikingly small, so that only a minor portion is covered by visual maceral analysis. Molecular organic-geochemical data were obtained for nonaromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons (including sulfur compounds), alcohols, ketones, esters, and carboxylic acids. Among the total extractable lipids, long-chain unsaturated ketones from Prymnesiophyte algae strongly predominate among the gas chromatography (GC) amenable components. Steroids are major constituents of the ketone and free- and bound-alcohol fractions. Perylene is the most abundant aromatic hydrocarbon, whereas in the nonaromatic hydrocarbon fractions, long-chain n-alkanes from higher land plants predominate, although the total terrigenous organic matter proportion in the sediments is small.

Accurate dating of lagoon sediments has been a difficult problem, although lagoon profiles, usually with high deposition rates, have a great potential for high-resolution climate reconstruction. We report 26 high-precision TIMS U-series dates (on 25 coral branches) and five AMS C-14 dates (on foraminifera) for a 15.4-m long lagoon core from Yongshu Reef, Nansha area, southern South China Sea. All the dates are in the correct stratigraphical sequence, providing the best chronology so far reported for lagoon deposits. The results reveal a similar to 4000-a continuous depositional history, with sedimentation rates varying from 0.8 to 24.6 mm a(-1), with an average of 3.85 mm a(-1), which corresponds to an average net carbonate accumulation rate of similar to 2700 g CaCO3 m(-2) a(-1), significantly higher than the mean value (800 +/- 400 g CaCO3 m(-2) a(-1)) used for lagoons in general in previous studies of global carbonate budget. Episodes of accelerated depositions within the last 1000 years correlate well with strong storm events identified by U-series dates of storm-transported coral blocks in the area. However, in the longer term, the sedimentation rates during the past 1000 years were much higher than earlier on, probably due to more vigorous wave-reef interaction as a result of relative sea-level fall since 500 AD and expansion of reef flat area, supplying more sediments. The coral TIMS U-series ages and foraminifera AMS 14C dates reveal intriguing apparent radiocarbon reservoir ages (R) from 572 to 1052 years, which are much higher than global mean values of similar to 400 years. We studied the grain-size, mineral and chemical compositions, physical properties, radiocarbon age, spore-pollen spectra, and diatom composition in sediments from Core PSh24-2537 sampled in the West Gotland Basin. Four lithological-stratigraphic units were distinguished: varved clays of the Baltic Ice Lake, black and black-gray (sulfide) clays of the Yoldian Sea, gray clays of Ancylus Lake, and greenish-gray sapropel-like littorine and post-littorine silts of the marine stage of Holocene. These units differ from each other both in their matter composition and in plant remains. In the littorine silts organic carbon concentra¬tion reached from 1.5 to 10.35%. Conditions of sediment accumulation and the stages of evolution of the West Gotland Basin over the post-glacial time are characterized.

To understand the role of the ocean within the global carbon cycle, detailed information is required on key-processes within the marine carbon cycle; bio-production in the upper ocean, export of the produced material to the deep ocean and the storage of carbon in oceanic sediments. Quantification of these processes requires the separation of signals of net primary production and the rate of organic matter decay as reflected in fossil sediments. This study examines the large differences in degradation rates of organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst species to separate these degradation and productivity signals. For this, accumulation rates of cyst species known to be resistant (R-cysts) or sensitive (S-cysts) to aerobic degradation of 62 sites are compared to mean annual chlorophyll-a, sea-surface temperature, sea-surface salinity, nitrate and phosphate concentrations of the upper waters and deep-water oxygen concentrations. Furthermore, the degradation of sensitive cysts, as expressed by the degradation constant k and reaction time t, has been related to bottom water [O2]. The studied sediments were taken from the Arabian Sea, north-western African Margin (North Atlantic), western-equatorial Atlantic Ocean/Caraibic, south-western African margin (South Atlantic) and Southern Ocean (Atlantic sector). Significant relationships are observed between (a) accumulation rates of R-cysts and upper water chlorophyll-a concentrations, (b) accumulation rates of S-cysts and bottom water [O2] and (c) degradation rates of S-cysts (kt) and bottom water [O2]. Relationships that are extremely weak or are clearly insignificant on all confidence intervals are between (1) S-cyst accumulation rates and chlorophyll-a concentrations, sea-surface temperature (SST), sea-surface salinity (SSS), phosphate concentrations (P) and nitrate concentrations (N), (2) between R-cyst accumulation rates and bottom water [O2], SST, SSS, P and N, and between (3) kt and water depth. Co-variance is present between the parameters N and P, N, P and chlorophyll-a, oxygen and water depth. Correcting for this co-variance does not influence the significance of the relationship given above. The possible applicability of dinoflagellate cyst degradation to estimate past net primary production and deep ocean ventilation is discussed.

The tight coupling between the atmospheric and oceanic circulation in the equatorial Atlantic region makes this area an important region for paleoclimatic research. Previous studies report the occurrence of large amounts of terrigenous material and soil organic carbon (SOC) within the marine sediments of the eastern Gulf of Guinea. We use the accumulation rates (AR) of branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) to identify variations in SOC delivery to the Niger Fan over the last 35 ka, and compare these records to long-chain n-alkanes as a proxy for higher plant material, to an inorganic proxy for terrigenous input (aluminum AR) and to indicators for the marine productivity (AR of carbonate and crenarchaeol). In addition, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are calculated based on the TEX86H index and environmental factors affecting the SST-reconstructions are discussed. Our results indicate that Al AR are closely connected to the rate of mean sea level change after 15 ka BP, with an additional influence of the increased monsoonal precipitation and extended vegetation cover corresponding to the African Humid Period (14.8-5.5 ka BP). Branched GDGT AR appears to be determined by shelf erosion in addition to the interplay of monsoonal precipitation and vegetation cover controlling soil erosion. Long-chain n-alkane concentrations clearly show a different trend than the other proxies, which might be due to their predominant eolian transport. Paleo-SSTs show a clear shift from colder temperatures during the last glacial period (20-22 °C) to warmer temperatures during the Holocene (24-26 °C). However, TEX86H-based SSTs are cold-biased compared to recent SSTs and Mg/Ca-based SST reconstructions, which is probably caused by a high seasonality of the Thaumarchaeota, with a maximum productivity of these organisms during the cold summer months. However, a sub-surface production of GDGTs and/or a potential bias of SST reconstruction by terrestrial input could not be completely excluded.

A number of studies have shown that Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) can be applied to quantitatively assess lacustrine sediment constituents. In this study, we developed calibration models based on FTIR for the quantitative determination of biogenic silica (BSi; n = 420; gradient: 0.9-56.5%), total organic carbon (TOC; n = 309; gradient: 0-2.9%), and total inorganic carbon (TIC; n= 152; gradient: 0-0.4%) in a 318 m-long sediment record with a basal age of 3.6 million years from Lake El'gygytgyn, Far East Russian Arctic. The developed partial least squares (PLS) regression models yield high cross-validated (CV) R2CV = 0.86-0.91 and low root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) (3.1-7.0% of the gradient for the different properties). By applying these models to 6771 samples from the entire sediment record, we obtained detailed insight into bioproductivity variations in Lake El'gygytgyn throughout the middle to late Pliocene and Quaternary. High accumulation rates of BSi indicate a productivity maximum during the middle Pliocene (3.6-3.3 Ma), followed by gradually decreasing rates during the late Pliocene and Quaternary. The average BSi accumulation during the middle Pliocene was ~3 times higher than maximum accumulation rates during the past 1.5 million years. The indicated progressive deterioration of environmental and climatic conditions in the Siberian Arctic starting at ca. 3.3 Ma is consistent with the first occurrence of glacial periods and the finally complete establishment of glacial-interglacial cycles during the Quaternary.

Here we present orbitally-resolved records of terrestrial higher plant leaf wax input to the North Atlantic over the last 3.5 Ma, based on the accumulation of long-chain n-alkanes and n-alkanl-1-ols at IODP Site U1313. These lipids are a major component of dust, even in remote ocean areas, and have a predominantly aeolian origin in distal marine sediments. Our results demonstrate that around 2.7 million years ago (Ma), coinciding with the intensification of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation (NHG), the aeolian input of terrestrial material to the North Atlantic increased drastically. Since then, during every glacial the aeolian input of higher plant material was up to 30 times higher than during interglacials. The close correspondence between aeolian input to the North Atlantic and other dust records indicates a globally uniform response of dust sources to Quaternary climate variability, although the amplitude of variation differs among areas. We argue that the increased aeolian input at Site U1313 during glacials is predominantly related to the episodic appearance of continental ice sheets in North America and the associated strengthening of glaciogenic dust sources. Evolutional spectral analyses of the n-alkane records were therefore used to determine the dominant astronomical forcing in North American ice sheet advances. These results demonstrate that during the early Pleistocene North American ice sheet dynamics responded predominantly to variations in obliquity (41 ka), which argues against previous suggestions of precession-related variations in Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during the early Pleistocene.
