To obtain the surface stress changes due to the adsorption of metal monolayers onto metallic surfaces, a new model derived from thermodynamic considerations is presented. Such a model is based on continuum Monte Carlo simulations with embedded atom method potentials in the canonical ensemble, and it is extended to consider the behavior on different islands adsorbed onto (111) substrate surfaces. Homoepitaxial and heteroepitaxial systems are studied. Pseudomorphic growth is not observed for small metal islands with considerable positive misfit with the substrate. Instead, the islands become compressed upon increase of their size. A simple model is proposed to interpolate between the misfits of atoms in small islands and the pseudomorphic behavior of the monolayer.

A model is presented for obtaining the step formation energy for metallic islands on (1 1 1) surfaces from Monte Carlo simulations. This model is applied to homo (Cu/Cu(1 1 1), Ag/Ag(1 1 1)) and heteroepitaxy (Ag/Pt(1 1 1)) systems. The embedded atom method is used to represent the interaction between the particles of the system, but any other type of potential could be used as well. The formulation can also be employed to consider the case of other single crystal surfaces, since the higher barriers for atom motion on other surfaces are not a hindrance for the simulation scheme proposed.

The reactivity of the species formed at the surface of a Au/Ce(La)O2 catalyst during the water¢¯¿½¯¿½gas shift (WGS) reaction were investigated by operando diffuse reflectance Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) at the chemical steady state during isotopic transient kinetic analyses (SSITKA). The exchanges of the reaction product CO2 and of formate and carbonate surface species were followed during an isotopic exchange of the reactant CO using a DRIFTS cell as a single reactor. The DRIFTS cell was a modified commercial cell that yielded identical reaction rates to that measured over a quartz plug-flow reactor. The DRIFTS signal was used to quantify the relative oncentrations of the surface species and CO2. The analysis of the formate exchange curves between 428 and 493 K showed that at least two levels of reactivity were present. ¢¯¿½¯¿½Slow formates¢¯¿½¯¿½ displayed an exchange rate constant 10- to 20-fold slower than that of the reaction product CO2. ¢¯¿½¯¿½Fast formates¢¯¿½¯¿½ were exchanged on a time scale similar to that of CO2. Multiple nonreactive readsorption of CO2 took place, accounting for the kinetics of the exchange of CO2(g) and making it impossible to determine the number of active sites through the SSITKA technique. The concentration (in mol g¢¯¿½¯¿½1) of formates on the catalyst was determined through a calibration curve and allowed calculation of the specific rate of formate decomposition. The rate of CO2 formation was more than an order of magnitude higher than the rate of decomposition of formates (slow + fast species), indicating that all of the formates detected by DRIFTS could not be the main reaction intermediates in the production of CO2. This work stresses the importance of full quantitative analyses (measuring both rate constants and adsorbate concentrations) when investigating the role of adsorbates as potential reaction intermediates, and illustrates how even reactive species seen by DRIFTS may be unimportant in the overall reaction scheme.

175 nm-thick Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) thin film fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique is found to be a mixture of two distributions of material. We discuss whether these two components are nano-regions of paraelectric and ferroelectric phases, or a bimodal grain-size distribution, or an effect of oxygen vacancy gradient from the electrode interface. The fraction of switchable ferroelectric phase decreases under bipolar pulsed fields, but it recovers after removal of the external fields. The plot of capacitance in decreasing dc voltage (C(Vdown arrow) versus that in increasing dc 61 voltage C(Vup arrow) is a superposition of overlapping of two triangles, in contrast to one well-defined triangle for typical ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films.

The carbazole moiety is a component of many important pharmaceuticals including anticancer and anti-HIV agents and is commonly utilized in the production of modern polymeric materials with novel photophysical and electronic properties. Simple carbazoles are generally produced via the aromatization of the respective tetrahydrocarbazole (THCZ). In this work, density functional theory calculations are used to model the reaction pathway of tetrahydrocarbazole aromatization over Pd(111). The geometry of each of the intermediate surface species has been determined and how each structure interacts with the metal surface addressed. The reaction energies and barriers of each of the elementary surface reactions have also been calculated, and a detailed analysis of the energetic trends performed. Our calculations have shown that the surface intermediates remain fixed to the surface via the aromatic ring in a manner similar to that of THCZ. Moreover, the aliphatic ring becomes progressively more planer with the dissociation of each subsequent hydrogen atom. Analysis of the reaction energy profile has revealed that the trend in reaction barriers is determined by the two factors: (i) the strength of the dissociating ring-H bond and (ii) the subsequent gain in energy due to the geometric relaxation of the aliphatic ring. The present work emphasizes the importance of including a full quantitative analysis when in situ operando methods are used to investigate reaction mechanisms and reaction intermediates. The fact that some surface species exchange at a similar rate to the reaction product during isotopic transients is a necessary but not sufficient criterion for participation as a key reaction intermediate. This is exemplified here in the case of highly active low-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) catalysts based on gold and platinum. Operando DRIFTS data, isotopic exchanges, and DRIFTS calibration curves relating the concentration of formate species to the corresponding DRIFTS band intensity were combined to obtain a quantitative measure of the specific rate of formate decomposition. Despite displaying a rapid isotopic exchange rate (sometimes as fast as that of the reaction product CO2), the concentration of formates seen by DRIFTS was found to account for at most only 10% of the CO2 produced under the experimental conditions reported herein. These new results obtained on Au/CeZrO4 and Pt/CeO2 preparations (which are among the most active low-temperature WGS catalysts reported to date), led to the same conclusions regarding the minor role of IR-observable formates as those obtained in the case of less active Au/Ce(La)O-2 and Pt/ZrO2 catalysts. Hydrogenation reaction, as one of the simplest association reactions on surfaces, is of great importance both scientifically and technologically. They are essential steps in many industrial processes in heterogeneous catalysis, such as ammonia synthesis (N-2+3H(2)-->2NH(3)). Many issues in hydrogenation reactions remain largely elusive. In this work, the NHx (x=0,1,2) hydrogenation reactions (N+H-->NH, NH+H-->NH2 and NH2+H-->NH3) on Rh(111) are used as a model system to study the hydrogenation reactions on metal surfaces in general using density-functional theory. In addition, C and O hydrogenation (C+H-->CH and O+H-->OH) and several oxygenation reactions, i.e., C+O, N+O, O+O reactions, are also calculated in order to provide a further understanding of the barrier of association reactions. The reaction pathways and the barriers of all these reactions are determined and reported. For the C, N, NH, and O hydrogenation reactions, it is found that there is a linear relationship between the barrier and the valency of R (R=C, N, NH, and O). Detailed analyses are carried out to rationalize the barriers of the reactions, which shows that: (i) The interaction energy between two reactants in the transition state plays an important role in determining the trend in the barriers; (ii) there are two major components in the interaction energy: The bonding competition and the direct Pauli repulsion; and (iii) the Pauli repulsion effect is responsible for the linear valency-barrier trend in the C, N, NH, and O hydrogenation reactions. For the NH2+H reaction, which is different from other hydrogenation reactions studied, the energy cost of the NH2 activation from the IS to the TS is the main part of the barrier. The potential energy surface of the NH2 on metal surfaces is thus crucial to the barrier of NH2+H reaction. Three important factors that can affect the barrier of association reactions are generalized: (i) The bonding competition effect; (ii) the local charge densities of the reactants along the reaction direction; and (iii) the potential energy surface of the reactants on the surface. The lowest energy pathway for a surface association reaction should correspond to the one with the best compromise of these three factors. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

We have performed density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on a close-packed transition metal surface, Pd(lll), and a more open surface, Pd(100), aiming to shed light on surface structure effects on reaction pathways and reactivity, an important issue in catalysis. Reaction pathways on both surfaces at two different coverages have been studied. It is found that the reaction pathways on both surfaces possess crucial common features despite the fact that they have different surface symmetries. Having determined reaction barriers in these systems, we find that the reaction on Pd(lll) is strongly coverage dependent. Surface coverages, however, have little effect on the reaction on Pd(100). Calculations also reveal that the low coverage reactions are structure sensitive while the medium coverage reactions are not. Detailed discussions on these results are given.

Large numbers of identical and stable SE(R)RS [surface-enhanced (resonance) Raman]-active media, which are convenient to handle and manipulate but sufficiently inexpensive that they can be used once and then discarded, have been prepared by isolating nanoparticles from Ag and Au sols in hydrophilic polymer gels. The preparation simply involves mixing a suitable polymer with the sol to give a viscous suspension that can be coated onto a substrate and dried to form a hard translucent film. The films remain inactive until they are treated with aqueous analyte solution, which causes the film to swell and brings the analyte into contact with the active metal particles. The swollen films give strong SERS spectra which are effectively identical to those obtained from simple sols. The advantage of this method is that the dried polymers can be stored indefinitely before use and that they give a high degree of spectral reproducibility.

Aggregated Au colloids have been widely used as SERS enhancing media for many years but to date there has been no systematic investigation of the effect of the particle size on the enhancements given by simple aggregated Au colloid solutions. Previous systematic studies on isolated particles in solution or multiple particles deposited onto surfaces reported widely different optimum particle sizes for the same excitation wavelength and also disagreed on the extent to which surface plasmon absorption spectra were a good predictor of enhancement factors. In this work the spectroscopic properties of a range of samples of monodisperse Au colloids with diameters ranging from 21 to 146 nm have been investigated in solution. The UV/visible absorption spectra of the colloids show complex changes as a function of aggregating salt (MgSO4) concentration which diminish when the colloid is fully aggregated. Under these conditions, the relative SERS enhancements provided by the variously sized colloids vary very significantly across the size range. The largest signals in the raw data are observed for 46 nm colloids but correction for the total surface area available to generate enhancement shows that particles with 74 nm diameter give the largest enhancement per unit surface area. The observed enhancements do not correlate with absorbance at the excitation wavelength but the large differences between differently sized colloids demonstrate that even in the randomly aggregated particle assemblies studied here, inhomogeneous broadening does not mask the underlying changes due to differences in particle diameter.

The structure and stability of palladium adlayers on Au(hkl) and Pt(hkl) were studied at different coverage degrees by means of Monte Carlo simulations using the interatomic potentials of the embedded atom model. In all cases the Pd films were found to grow epitaxially and pseudomorphically with the crystallographic orientation of the substrate. The differences and similarities of the adlayer with the substrate were analyzed.

The complete spectrum of eigenwaves including surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), dynamic (bulk) and complex waves in the layered structures containing semiconductor and metallic films has been explored. The effects of loss, geometry and the parameters of dielectric layers on the eigenmode spectrum and, particularly, on the SPP modes have been analysed using both the asymptotic and rigorous numerical solutions of the full-wave dispersion equation. The field and Poynting vector distributions have been examined to identify the modes and elucidate their properties. It has been shown that losses and dispersion of permittivity qualitatively alter the spectral content and the eigenwave properties. The SPP counter-directional power fluxes in the film and surrounding dielectrics have been attributed to vortices of power flow, which are responsible for the distinctive features of SPP modes. It has been demonstrated for the first time that the maximal attainable slow-wave factor of the SPP modes guided by thin Au films at optical frequencies is capped not by losses but the frequency dispersion of the actual Au permittivity. © 2009 EDP Sciences.

We simulate the localized surface plasmon resonances of an Au nanoparticle within tunnelling proximity of an Au substrate. The results demonstrate that the calculated resonance energies can be identified with those experimentally detected for light emission from the tip-sample junction of a scanning tunnelling microscope. Relative to the modes of an isolated nanoparticle these modes show significant red-shifting, extending further into the infrared with increasing radius, primarily due to a proximity-induced lowering of the effective bulk plasmon frequency. Spatial mapping of the field enhancement factor shows an oscillatory variation of the field, absent in the case of a dielectric substrate; also the degree of localization of the modes, and thus the resolution achievable electromagnetically, is shown to depend primarily on the nanoparticle radius, which is only weakly dependent on wavelength.

The mechanism of CO oxidation reactions over undoped and gold-doped CuMnOX (Hopcalite) catalysts has been examined using a temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor Gold doping has been found to increase the activity of the mixed oxide catalyst significantly however using consecutive pulsing TAP experiments the presence of gold was not found to affect the contribution of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism Conversely gold doping was found to promote the Mars van Krevelen mechanism Using CO and O-2 multi-pulse TAP experiments the gold was found to modify the catalyst surface such that it stores much more oxygen that is active for the CO oxidation The CO multi-pulse experiments indicated that two distinct types of active oxygen species were found to be involved in the CO oxidation One type was observed in a similar amount on both doped and undoped catalysts and was associated with mixed oxide while the second type was only found on the gold-doped catalyst and was therefore clearly associated with the presence of gold on the catalyst surface The latter was found to be much less active than the oxygen inherent to the oxide but was at a concentration of approximately 10 times larger leading to the enhanced activity observed on gold doping (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved
