The purpose of the paper is to identify and describe differences in cognitive structures between consumer segments with differing levels of acceptance of genetically modified (GM) food. Among a sample of 60 mothers three segments are distinguished with respect to purchase intentions for GM yogurt: non-buyers, maybe-buyers and likely-buyers. A homogeneity test for the elicited laddering data suggests merging maybe- and likely-buyers, yielding two segments termed accepters and rejecters. Still, overlap between the segments’ cognitive structures is considerable, in particular with respect to a health focus in the evaluation of perceived consequences and ambivalence in technology assessment. Distinct differences are found in the assessment of benefits offered by GM food and the importance of values driving product evaluation and thus purchase decisions.

Here I argue that the best form of deontology is an ethic of prima facie duties, and that this form of deontology is especially resistant to any form of reduction to a single principle.

The adsorption of carbon monoxide on the Pt{110} surface at coverages of 0.5 ML and 1.0 ML was investigated using quantitative low-energy electron diffraction (LEED IV) and density-functional theory (DFT). At 0.5 ML CO lifts the reconstruction of the clean surface but does not form an ordered overlayer. At the saturation coverage, 1.0 ML, a well-ordered p(2×1) superstructure with glide line symmetry is formed. It was confirmed that the CO molecules adsorb on top of the Pt atoms in the top-most substrate layer with the molecular axes tilted by ±22° with respect to the surface normal in alternating directions away from the close packed rows of Pt atoms. This is accompanied by significant lateral shifts of 0.55 Å away from the atop sites in the same direction as the tilt. The top-most substrate layer relaxes inwards by −4% with respect to the bulk-terminated atom positions, while the consecutive layers only show minor relaxations. Despite the lack of long-range order in the 0.5 ML CO layer it was possible to determine key structural parameters by LEED IV using only the intensities of the integer-order spots. At this coverage CO also adsorbs on atop sites with the molecular axis closer to the surface normal (b10°). The average substrate relaxations in each layer are similar for both coverages and consistent with DFT calculations performed for a variety of ordered structures with coverages of 1.0 ML and 0.5 ML.

The protective effect of two vaccination regimes using Salenvac, a commercially available iron-restricted Salmonella enterica subsp. Enterica serotype Enteritidis PT4 bacterin vaccine, was verified in laying birds. Immunization was intramuscular at 1 day old and again at 4 weeks of age (V2), or at 1 day and 4 weeks with a third dose at 18 weeks of age (V3). Challenge S. Enteritidis (5 to 7.5) x 10(7) colony forming units) was given intravenously at 8, 17, 23, 30 and 59 weeks of age. For all age groups, both vaccination regimes reduced significantly the number of tissues and faecal samples that were culture positive for the challenge strain. For laying birds, fewer eggs (P < 0.001) were culture positive for S. Enteritidis after challenge from vaccinated laying birds ( 56/439 batches of eggs) than unvaccinated birds (99/252 batches). The data give compelling evidence that the vaccine is efficacious and may contribute to the reduction of layer infection and egg contamination.

Europe has the greatest concentration of botanic gardens in the world, they cultivate extensive collections of plants that include samples of European threatened plant species. This study looks at the effectiveness of these collections in supporting species conservation. A three part study is presented: (1) the results of a survey and assessment of threatened plants in botanic gardens, as defined by the Bern Convention; (2) case studies illustrating current issues in the ex situ management of European threatened plant species; and (3) presentation of policy recommendations on further improving botanic garden contributions to European plant conservation. The survey indicated that of 119 European botanic gardens in 29 European countries, 105 are cultivating 308 of the 573 threatened plant species listed by the Bern Convention. The survey identified 25 botanic gardens in 14 countries undertaking 51 conservation projects focused on 27 Bern listed species. In particular this survey has established that the majority of taxa are held in a small number of collections, dominated by non-wild origin accessions, and are not adequately documented. The majority of specimens in botanic gardens are cultivated out of the range country and not contributing to a specific conservation project. We review the genetic representation and documentation of origin in collections. Existing plant collections contain representatives of populations, now lost in the wild and maintain samples of at least nine European plant taxa identified as 'Extinct in the Wild'. However, inadequate standards of record keeping has compromised the conservation value of many collections. We highlight the dangers of hybridisation and disease in ex situ collections. The results suggest that botanic garden collections are skewed towards horticulturally robust and ornamental species and do not fully reflect priorities as defined by the Bern Convention. Recognising the limitations of traditional botanic garden collections we propose that botanic gardens more effectively utilise their two core competencies, namely scientific horticulture and public display and interpretation. The unique horticultural skills resident in European botanic gardens could be more effectively utilised through the application of horticulture to the management of wild populations.

This work reports the ligational behavior of the neutral bidentate chelating molecule 2-(3,5-dimethyl pyrazol-1-yl) benzothiazole towards the oxomolybdenum(V) center. Both mononuclear complexes of the type (MoOX3L)-O-V and binuclear complexes of the formula (Mo2O4X2L2)-O-V (where X = Cl, Br) are isolated in the solid state. The complexes are characterized by elemental analyses, various spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis IR), magnetic susceptibility measurement at room temperature, and cyclic voltammetry for their redox behavior at a platinum electrode in CH3CN. The mononuclear complexes (MoOX3L)-O-V are found to be paramagnetic while the binuclear complexes Mo2O4X2L2 are diamagnetic. Crystal and molecular structure of the ligand and the dioxomolybdenum complex (MoO2Br2L)-O-VI (obtained from the complex MoOBr3L during crystallization) have been solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Relevant DFT calculations of the ligand and the complex (MoO2Br2L)-O-VI are also carried out.

A system for continuous data assimilation described recently (Bengtsson & Gustavsson, 1971) has been further developed and tested under more realistic conditions. A balanced barotropic model is used and the integration is performed over an octagon covering the area to the north of 20° N. Comparisons have been made between using data from the actual aerological network and data from a satellite in a polar orbit. The result of the analyses has been studied in different subregions situated in data sparse as well as in data dense areas. The errors of the analysis have also been studied in the wave spectrum domain. Updating is performed using data generated by the model but also by model-independent data. Rather great differences are obtained between the two experiments especially with respect to the ultra-long waves. The more realistic approach gives much larger analysis error. In general the satellite updating yields somewhat better result than the updating from the conventional aerological network especially in the data sparse areas over the oceans. Most of the experiments are performed by a satellite making 200 observations/track, a sidescan capability of 40° and with a RMS-error of 20 m. It is found that the effect of increasing the number of satellite observations from 100 to 200 per orbit is almost negligible. Similarly the effect is small of improving the observations by diminishing the RMS-error below a certain value. An observing system using two satellites 90° out of phase has also been investigated. This is found to imply a substantial improvement. Finally an experiment has been performed using actual SIRS-soundings from NIMBUS IV. With respect to the very small number of soundings at 500 mb, 142 during 48 hours, the result can be regarded as quite satisfactory.

Particulate antigen assemblies in the nanometer range and DNA plasmids are particularly interesting for designing vaccines. We hypothesised that a combination of these approaches could result in a new delivery method of gp160 envelope HIV-1 vaccine which could combine the potency of virus-like particles (VLPs) and the simplicity of use of DNA vaccines. Characterisation of lentivirus-like particles (lentiVLPs) by western blot, dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy revealed that their protein pattern, size and structure make them promising candidates for HIV-1 vaccines. Although all particles were similar with regard to size and distribution, they clearly differed in p24 capsid protein content suggesting that Rev may be required for particle maturation and Gag processing. In vivo, lentiVLP pseudotyping with the gp160 envelope or with a combination of gp160 and VSV-G envelopes did not influence the magnitude of the immune response but the combination of lentiVLPs with Alum adjuvant resulted in a more potent response. Interestingly, the strongest immune response was obtained when plasmids encoding lentiVLPs were co-delivered to mice muscles by electrotransfer, suggesting that lentiVLPs were efficiently produced in vivo or the packaging genes mediate an adjuvant effect. DNA electrotransfer of plasmids encoding lentivirus-like particles offers many advantages and appears therefore as a promising delivery method of HIV-1 vaccines. This paper investigates whether the intrinsic energy efficiency rating of an office building has a significant impact on its rental value. A sample of 817 transactions for offices with Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) in the UK is used to assess whether a pricing differential can be identified, depending on the energy rating. While previous analyses of this topic have typically relied on appraisal-based and/or asking rent data, the dataset used in this research contains actual contract rents as well as information on lease terms. The results indicate a significant rental premium for energy-efficient buildings. However, it is found that this premium appears to be mainly driven by the youngest cohort of state-of-the-art energy-efficient buildings. The results also show that tenants of more energy-efficient buildings tend to pay a lower service charge, but this link appears to be rather weak and limited to newer buildings. Hence, it is argued that the information contained in the EPC is still not fully taken into account in the UK commercial property market with the possible exception of both the highest and the lowest EPC ratings.
