Pollination of Cyclamen persicum (Primulaceae) was studied in two wild populations in Israel. Buzz-pollination proved to be extremely rare, and performed by a large Anthophora bee only. The most frequent pollinators were various unspecialized species of thrips (Thysanoptera) and hoverflies (Syrphidae). In the Winter-flowering populations the commonest visitor was a small primitive moth, Micropteris elegans (Micropterigidae, Lepidoptera). These moths feed on pollen, copulate and oviposit within the flowers. From the rarity of buzz-pollination it is concluded that the genus Cyclamen co-evolved with large bees capable of buzz-pollination, but lost its original pollinators for unknown historical reasons. The vacant niche was then open to various unspecialized pollen consumers such as thrips, hoverflies and small solitary bees. While these insects are not specific to C. persicum and seem to play a minor role only, the moth strictly relies upon Cyclamen and seems to be the most efficient pollinator.

Varroa destructor is a parasitic mite of the Eastern honeybee Apis cerana. Fifty years ago, two distinct evolutionary lineages (Korean and Japanese) invaded the Western honeybee Apis mellifera. This haplo-diploid parasite species reproduces mainly through brother sister matings, a system which largely favors the fixation of new mutations. In a worldwide sample of 225 individuals from 21 locations collected on Western honeybees and analyzed at 19 microsatellite loci, a series of de novo mutations was observed. Using historical data concerning the invasion, this original biological system has been exploited to compare three mutation models with allele size constraints for microsatellite markers: stepwise (SMM) and generalized (GSM) mutation models, and a model with mutation rate increasing exponentially with microsatellite length (ESM). Posterior probabilities of the three models have been estimated for each locus individually using reversible jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo. The relative support of each model varies widely among loci, but the GSM is the only model that always receives at least 9% support, whatever the locus. The analysis also provides robust estimates of mutation parameters for each locus and of the divergence time of the two invasive lineages (67,000 generations with a 90% credibility interval of 35,000-174,000). With an average of 10 generations per year, this divergence time fits with the last post-glacial Korea Japan land separation. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Accurately and reliably identifying the actual number of clusters present with a dataset of gene expression profiles, when no additional information on cluster structure is available, is a problem addressed by few algorithms. GeneMCL transforms microarray analysis data into a graph consisting of nodes connected by edges, where the nodes represent genes, and the edges represent the similarity in expression of those genes, as given by a proximity measurement. This measurement is taken to be the Pearson correlation coefficient combined with a local non-linear rescaling step. The resulting graph is input to the Markov Cluster (MCL) algorithm, which is an elegant, deterministic, non-specific and scalable method, which models stochastic flow through the graph. The algorithm is inherently affected by any cluster structure present, and rapidly decomposes a graph into cohesive clusters. The potential of the GeneMCL algorithm is demonstrated with a 5730 gene subset (IGS) of the Van't Veer breast cancer database, for which the clusterings are shown to reflect underlying biological mechanisms. Chlorosilylene, ClSiH, was prepared by 193 nm laser flash photolysis of 1-chloro-1-silacyclopent-3-ene in the gas phase. ClSiH was monitored in real time at 457.9 nm using a CW argon ion laser. The kinetics of reactions of ClSiH with C2H4, CH2 = CHCMe3, C2H2, Me2O, SO2, HCl, MeSiH3, Me2SiH2, Me3SiH, MeGeH3, MeGeH3 and precursor have been studied at ambient temperatures for the first time. Addition reactions of ClSiH and reactions with lone pair donors are faster than insertion reactions. Surprisingly ClSiH inserts faster into Si-H than Ge-H bonds. ClSiH is intermediate in reactivity between SiH2 and SiCI2. Relative reactivities of CISiH and SiH2 vary considerably. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of fourteen novel pyrrole monomers substituted at the 3-position with aliphatic and aromatic crown-ether moieties have been synthesised in good yield and characterised extensively. Several of these compounds were electropolymerised successfully in acetonitrile, using both potentiostatic and galvanostatic modes and the electrochemical properties of those systems were studied via cyclic voltammetry in aqueous and organic media. Novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives revealed reversible redox couples in LiClO4/CH3CN (0.1 M). The morphology of these novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives was characterised by scanning electron microscopy. These polymers exhibited an open porous structure and half the charge was required when compared to polypyrrole to afford films of equal thickness. The mass change during polymerisation was followed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurement, and the rate of polymer growth was found to be nonlinear when compared to polypyrrole. New Pd(II), Pt(II) and Re(V) complexes of 3-aminosalicylic acid (H(2)salNH(2)) and 3-hydroxyantranilic acid (HantOH) have been prepared, cis-[Pt (HsalNH)(PPh3)(2)] center dot 0.25C(2)H(5)OH (1), trans-[PdCl(salNH(2))(PPh3)(2)](2), trans-[ReOI2(HsalNH(2))(PPh3)] center dot (CH3)(2)CO (3), cis-[Pt(HantO)(PPh3)(2)] (4), trans-[PdCl(antOH)(PPh3)(2)] center dot 4H(2)O (5), [PdCl(antOH)(bipy)] center dot C2H5OH (6), [PdCl2(HantOH)(2)] (7) and trans-[ReOI(HantO)(PPh3)(2)] center dot (CH3)(2)CO (8). The crystal structure of complex I was determined showing chelation of HsalNH(2-) through the adjacent nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the amino and phenolate groups. Infrared and H-1 NMR spectroscopic data for the complexes are presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

During the last 15 years, a series of food scares and crises (BSE, dioxin. foot and mouth disease) have seriously under-mined public confidence in food producers and operators and their capacity to produce safe food. As a result, food safety has become a top priority of the European legislative authorities and systems of national food control have been tightened up and have included the establishment of the European Food Safety Authority. In Greece a law creating the Hellenic Food Safety Authority has been approved. The main objectives of this Authority are to promote the food security to consumers and inform them of any changes or any development in the food and health sector. The paper reviews the general structure of the current food control system in Greece. It describes the structure and the mission of the Hellenic Food Safety Authority and explains the strategy to carry out inspections and the analysis of the preliminary results of such inspections. Details are also given of the personnel training and certification and accreditation standards to be met by the Authority by the end of 2004. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Aim: We examined the effect of meat fatty acids on lipid and apolipoprotein concentrations of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and chylomicron/chylomicron remnants in lipid fractions with a Svedberg flotation rate (S-f) 60-400 and S-f 20-60. Methods and results: Six healthy middle-aged men received in random order mixed meals enriched with saturated (SFA), polyunsaturated (PUFA) or monounsaturated (MUFA) fatty acids on 3 occasions. VLDL and chylomicron/chylomicron remnants in the lipid fractions were separated by immunoaffinity chromatography against apo B-100. In the S-f 60-400 chylomicron/chylomicron remnants, triacylglycerol and cholesterol concentrations were significantly tower following PUFA compared with SFA and MUFA (P <= 0.05). Apolipoprotein (apo) E responses were significantly higher after SFA in chylomicron/chylomicron remnants and VLDL compared with PUFA and MUFA (P < 0.007). However, apo B responses (particle number) were higher following MUFA than SFA (P = 0.039 for chylomicron/chylomicron remnants). Composition of the chylomicron/chylomicron remnants (expressed per particle) revealed differences in their triacylglycerol and apo E contents; in the Sf 60-400 fraction, SFA-rich chylomicron/chylomicron remnants contained significantly more triacylglycerol than MUFA (P = 0.028), more apo E than PUFA- and MUFA-rich particles (P < 0.05) and in the S-f 20-60 fraction, more apo E than MUFA (P = 0.009). Conclusion: There are specific differences in the composition of chylomicron/ chylomicron remnants formed after saturated compared with unsaturated fatty acid-rich meals which could determine their metabolic fate in the circulation and subsequent atherogenicity. The free radical theory of ageing postulates that age-associated neurodegeneration is caused by an imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants resulting in oxidative stress. The current study showed regional variation in brain susceptibility to age-associated oxidative stress as shown by increased lipofuscin deposition and protein carbonyl levels in male rats of age 15-16 months compared to control ones (3-5 months). The hippocampus is the area most vulnerable to change compared to the cortex and cerebellum. However, proteasomal enzyme activity was not affected by age in any of the brain regions studied. Treatment with melatonin or coenzyme Q10 for 4 weeks reduced the lipofuscin content of the hippocampus and carbonyl level. However, both melatonin and coenzyme Q10 treatments inhibited beta-glutamyl peptide hydrolase activity. This suggests that these molecules can alter proteasome function independently of their antioxidant actions. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
