Bacterial flora of the gut of the African snakehead, Channa obscura (Pisces: Channidae)

A qualitative and quantitative investigation of the bacterial flora of the gut of the African snakehead, Channa obscura was undertaken. The types of bacteria isolated from the different parts of the gut of C. obscura include Pseudomonas, Streptococcus, Citrobacter and Proteus. The coliform (Escherichia coli, Enterobacter) and some other Enterobacteriaceae such as Salmonella were also present. The stomach and intestine were found to have a preponderance of Pseudomonas and Vibrio species. Klebsiella sp. and Bacillus sp. (only in the pyloric caeca) were also isolated. On the whole, the correlation coefficients of the two incubation temperatures showed a high statistical significance. Thus the bacterial load of the gut of C. obscura has been shown as a function of temperature

Raumfigurationen und Macht in Atemschaukel

[EN] Atemschaukel approaches the falling apart and survival in a historically loaded space, such as a labour camp. This novel offers a relevant research field for the space analysis, focused from the perspective of the Spatial Turn, as not only this theoretical frame but also Herta Müller herself conceive of space as a process, unterstood as a reciprocal interaction with the social practice, thus as a spatial and social construct. The representation of space in Atemschaukel is described in this article as a “swinging movement between boxes and abyss”, where the discourse of Leopold Auberg’s memories oscillates between closed and square spaces, on one hand, and open and giddy spaces, on the other hand. In this oscillating movement it is the open spaces that will most clearly show the process of inner destruction of the subject in such oppressive situations as on labour camps, as well as the permanent damages of deportation.

Diffraction integral formulas of the pulsed wave field in the temporal domain

To resolve the diffraction problems of the pulsed wave field directly in the temporal domain, we extend the Rayleigh diffraction integrals to the temporal domain and then discuss the approximation condition of this diffraction formula. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

An evaluation of artisanal fisheries resources in Cross River State

Artisanal fisheries resources and its exploitation trends in Cross River State were evaluated using questionnaire and participatory Rapid Appraisal (PRA) methods for a period of 5 years (1991-1995). They were open-access or unrestricted access fishing in Cross River State within the period under view. It was also discovered that, they were no proper records from the Department of fisheries. There was a decline in the relative abundance of the stock that constituted the important marine and freshwater fisheries in Cross River State Artisanal fisheries (small-scale fisheries) yielded 146,076 metric tons within the period. It was suggested therefore, that government should enforce the policies that restrict open-access in marine artisanal fisheries in Cross River State

Untersuchungen zur Aufzucht von Dorschen (Gadus morhua morhua) der Westlichen Ostsee. Teil II: Aufbau und Hälterung eines Laichfischbestandes sowie Erbrütung der gewonnenen Eier

In 1993 and 1994 hatching and rearing of cod eggs and larvae from the western stock was carried out aiming at data about the reproduction biology of this species. This paper describes the hatching methods and first results of the correlation between various biotic and abiotic factors, naturally fertilized eggs from a broodstock, and the amount of viable larvae.

Einfluß von Anlagen der Offshore-Industrie auf die Fischerei in der Nordsee

From the beginning of the oil and gas exploration in the North Sea the impact of offshore installations, especially pipelines, on the fishery has been thoroughly discussed and investigated. Since fishing activities in the vicinity of pipelines are not prohibited, special precautions have to be taken to prevent towed fishing gear from being fouled by a pipeline. Until now all recommendations for the installation of pipelines are based on the results of tests with trawls crossing one pipeline. New problems will arise if parallel pipelines are installed as planned in the near future.

Reactions of oxygen containing ligands in the coordination sphere of permethylhafnocene and permethyltantalocene

A series of terl-butylperoxide complexes of hafnium, Cp*₂Hf(R)(OOCMe₃) (Cp* = ((η⁵-C₅Me₅); R = Cl, H, CH₃, CH₂CH₃, CH₂CH₂CH₃, CH₂CH₂CH₂CH₃, CH₂CHMe₂, CH=CHCMe₃, C₆H₅, meta-C₆H₃(CH₂)2) and Cp*(η⁵-C₅(CH₃)₄CH₂CH₂CH₂)Hf(OOCMe₃), has been synthesized. One example has been structurally characterized, Cp*₂Hf(OOCMe₃)CH₂CH₃ crystallizes in space group P2₁/c, with a = 19.890(7)Å, b = 8.746(4)Å, c = 17.532(6)Å, β = 124.987(24)°, V = 2498(2)ų, Z = 4 and R_F = 0.054 (2222 reflections, I > 0). Despite the coordinative unsaturation of the hafnium center, the terl-butylperoxide ligand is coordinated in a mono-dentate ligand. The mode of decomposition of these species is highly dependent on the substituent R. For R = H, CH₂CH₃, CH₂CH₂CH₃, CH₂CH₂CH₂CH₃, CH₂CHMe₂ a clean first order conversion to Cp*₂Hf(OCMe₃)(OR) is observed (for R CH₂CH₃, ΔHǂ = 19.6 kcal•mol^-1, ΔSǂ = -13 e.u.). These results are discussed in terms of a two step mechanism involving η²-coordination of the terl-butylperoxide ligand. Homolytic O-O bond cleavage is observed upon heating of Cp*₂Hf(OOCMe₃) R (R = C₆H₆, meta-C₆H₃(CH₃)₂). In the presence of excess 9,10-dihydroanthracene thermolysis of Cp*₂Hf(OOCMe₃)C₆H₆ cleanly affords Cp*₂Hf(C₆H₆)OH and HOCMe₃ (ΔHǂ = 22.6 kcal•mol^-1, ΔSǂ = -9 e.u.). The O-O bond strength in these complexes is thus estimated to be 22 kcal•mol^-1.

Cp*₂Ta(CH₂)H, Cp*₂Ta(CHC₆H₅)H, Cp*₂Ta(C₆H₄)H, Cp*₂Ta(CH₂=CH₂)H and Cp*₂Ta(CH₂=CHMe)H react, presumably through Cp*₂Ta-R intermediates, with H₂O to give Cp*₂Ta(O)H and alkane. Cp*₂Ta(O)H was structurally characterized: space group P2₁/n, a= 13.073(3)Å, b = 19.337(4)Å, c = 16.002(3)Å, β = 108.66(2)°, V = 3832(1)ų, Z = 8 and R_F = 0.0672 (6730 reflections). Reaction of terlbutylhydroperoxide with these same starting materials ultimately yields Cp*₂Ta(O)R and HOCMe₃. Cp*₂Ta(CH₂=CHR)OH species are proposed as intermediates in the olefin hydride reactions. Cp*₂Ta(O₂)R species can be generated from the reaction of the same starting materials and O₂. Lewis acids have been shown to promote oxygen insertion in these complexes.

Nematic ordering pattern formation in the process of self-organization of microtubules in a gravitational field

Papaseit et al. (Proc. Nati. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 97, 8364, 2000) showed the decisive role of gravity in the formation of patterns by assemblies of microtubules in vitro. By virtue of a functional scaling, the free energy for MT systems in a gravitational field was constructed. The influence of the gravitational field on MT's self-organization process, that can lead to the isotropic to nematic phase transition, is the focus of this paper. A coupling of a concentration gradient with orientational order characteristic of nernatic ordering pattern formation is the new feature emerging in the presence of gravity. The concentration range corresponding to a phase coexistence region increases with increasing g or NIT concentration. Gravity facilitates the isotropic to nernatic phase transition leading to a significantly broader transition region. The phase transition represents the interplay between the growth in the isotropic phase and the precipitation into the nematic phase. We also present and discuss the numerical results obtained for local NIT concentration change with the height of the vessel, order parameter and phase transition properties.
