A generalized analysis, using the Vander Lugt operational notation, of the building block optical system comprising a single holographic optical element (HOE) for achieving simultaneous display of the spectrum and the image of an object in a single plane, has been carried out. The salient features of this analysis are: (1) it allows comprehensive characterization of the HOE, (2) it provides insights into the many possible configurations for the system, and (3) it explains the existing results in a consistent manner.

Individual carbon nanotubes being substantially smaller than the wavelength of light, are not much responsive to optical manipulation. Here we demonstrate how decorating single-walled carbon nanotubes with palladium particles makes optical trapping and manipulation easier. Palladium decorated nanotubes (Pd/SWNTs) have higher effective dielectric constant and are trapped at much lower laser power level with greater ease. In addition, we report the transportation of Pd/SWNTs using an asymmetric line trap. Using this method carbon nanotubes can be transported in any desired direction with high transportation speed. The use of split lenses for multiple imaging and multichannel optical processing is demonstrated. Conditions are obtained for nonoverlapping of multipled images and avoiding crosstalk in the multichannel processing. Almost uniform intensity across the multipled images is an advantage here, while the low ƒ/No. of the split lens segments puts a limit in the resolution in image processing. Experimental results of multiple imaging and of a few multichannel processing are presented.

Oxovanadium(IV) complexes VO(L)(B)] (1-3), where H2L is a Schiff base ligand 2-(2-hydroxybenzylideneamino) phenol and B is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen for 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq for 2) or dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz for 3), have been prepared, characterized and their DNA binding property and photo-induced DNA cleavage activity studied. Complex 3 which is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography shows the presence of an oxovanadium(IV) moiety in a six coordinate VO3N3 coordination geometry. The complexes show a d-d band within 800-850 nm in DMF. The complexes display an oxidative response near 0.7 V versus SCE for V(V)-V(IV) and a reductive response within -1.1 to -1.3 V due to V(IV)-V(III) couple in DMF-0.1 M TBAP. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA giving binding constant values of 4.2 x 10(4) to 1.2 x 10(5) M (1). The complexes do not show any ``chemical nuclease'' activity in dark. The dpq and dppz complexes are photocleavers of plasmid DNA in UV-A light of 365 nm via O-1(2) pathway and in near-IR light (752.5 to 799.3 nm IR optics) by HO* pathway. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in visible light in HeLa cells giving IC50 value of 13 mu M, while it is less toxic in dark (IC50 = 97 mu M). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We present a general method for the synthesis of functional nanoporous structures by heat treating a loose compact of nanorods. Partial sintering of such a compact leads to spherodization of the nanorods and their fusion at the contact regions leading to an interconnected porous microstructure. The pore diameter can be controlled by changing the original nanorod diameter. We illustrate the generality of the method using TiO2, ZnO and hydroxyapatite as model systems; the method is applicable for any material that can be grown in the form of nanorods. The kinetics of the sintering process can be significantly enhanced in systems in which additional driving forces for mass transport arise from phase transitions proving an ultrafast pathway for producing biphasic porous structures. The possibility of producing hierarchical porous structures using fugitive sintering aids makes this process ideal for a variety of applications including catalysis, photoanodes for solar cells and scaffolds for biomedical applications.

The application of holographic interferometry to the measurement of the corrosion rate of aluminium in sodium hydroxide is investigated. Details of the fabrication of the corrosion cell and the experimental procedure are given. Thickness loss of aluminium was found for different dissolution times and compared with the conventional weight-loss method using a microbalance.

We present a laser-based system to measure the refractive index of air over a long path length. In optical distance measurements it is essential to know the refractive index of air with high accuracy. Commonly, the refractive index of air is calculated from the properties of the ambient air using either Ciddor or Edlén equations, where the dominant uncertainty component is in most cases the air temperature. The method developed in this work utilises direct absorption spectroscopy of oxygen to measure the average temperature of air and of water vapor to measure relative humidity. The method allows measurement of temperature and humidity over the same beam path as in optical distance measurement, providing spatially well matching data. Indoor and outdoor measurements demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. In particular, we demonstrate an effective compensation of the refractive index of air in an interferometric length measurement at a time-variant and spatially non-homogenous temperature over a long time period. Further, we were able to demonstrate 7 mK RMS noise over a 67 m path length using 120 s sample time. To our knowledge, this is the best temperature precision reported for a spectroscopic temperature measurement.

Wavelength tuning and stability characteristics of a singly resonant continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (cw OPO) in the proximity of signal-idler degeneracy have been studied. The OPO is made singly resonant by using a Bragg grating as a spectral filter in the OPO cavity. The signal-idler frequency difference can be tuned from 0.5 to 7 THz, which makes the OPO suitable for cw THz generation by optical heterodyning. The operation of the OPO within this singly-resonant regime is characterized by a strong self-stabilization effect. A gradual transition to an unstable, doubly-resonant regime is observed for a signal-idler detuning smaller than ~ 0.5 THz.

A simple method for absolute frequency measurements of molecular transitions in the mid-infrared region is reported. The method is based on a cw singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (SRO), which is tunable from 3.2 to 3.45 µm. The mid- infrared frequency of the SRO is referenced to an optical frequency comb through its pump and signal beams. Sub-Doppler spectroscopy and absolute frequency measurement of the P(7) transition of the ν3 band of CH4 are demonstrated.

Recently reported experimental results on the rotation sensitivity of Lau fringes to the spatial coherence of the source have been theoretically analyzed and explained on the basis of coherence theory. A theoretical plot of the rotation angle required for the Lau fringes to vanish is obtained as a function of the coherence length of the illumination used in the Lau experiment. The theoretical results compare well with the experimental observations. The analysis as well as the experiment could form the basis for a simple and easy measurement of the coherence length of the illumination in a plane.

Ultraviolet radiation has been generated by tangentially phase-matched sum-frequency mixing in biaxial L-arginine phosphate (LAP) crystal for the first time using Nd:YAG output at 1064 nm and Rh 6G dye laser output at 560 nm as the two input sources. Characterization has also been made of such a cheap, biaxial crystal for its possible use in devices for tangentially phase-matched short wavelength generation. If the crystal is of proper cut, thickness and quality so that its maximum capability can be exploited it can replace the potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) group of crystals for various applications.

The electronic excitations and fluorescence of conjugated polymers are related to large or small alternation ? of the transfer integrals t(1 ± ?) along the backbone. The fluorescence of polysilanes (PSs) and poly (para-phenylenevinylene (PPV) is linked to large ?, which places the one-photon gap Eg below the lowest two-photon gap Ea and reduces distortions due to electron-phonon (e-p) coupling. In contrast to small ? not, vert, similar 0.1 in ?-conjugated polymers, such as polyacetylene (PA), para-conjugated phenyls lead to an extended ?-system with increased alternation, to states localized on each ring and to charge-transfer excitations between them. Surprisingly good agreement is found between semiempirical parametric method 3 (PM3) bond lengths and exact Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) ?-bond orders for trans-stilbene, where the PPV bipolarons are confined to two phenyls. Stilbene spectra are consistent with increased alternation and small e-p distortions.

The effect of Raman scattering on co-propagation of two short optical pulses is considered. The intra pulse Raman scattering causes the self-frequency shift of each pulse. The effect of the inter pulse Raman scattering is to enhance the frequency shift while the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) term suppresses (enhances) the frequency shift if the center frequency difference between the optical pulses falls to the right (left) of the Raman gain peak. An expression for the frequency shift as a function of the propagation distance is obtained.

A microscopic calculation of the solvation dynamics of an ion in liquid water is presented. The calculated solvation time correlation function shows an ultrafast Gaussian decay which carries about 70%–90% of the strength followed by a biexponential decay with time constants equal to 250 fs and 1 ps. These results are in excellent agreement with the computer simulations of Maroncelli and Fleming and also with the experimental findings of Barbara and Jarzeba. In addition, we find that both the rotational librations and the intermolecular translational vibrational modes of water contribute significantly to the initial Gaussian decay.

We analyze theoretically the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (UT) under conditions where the probe laser is not in the usual weak limit. We consider the effects in both three-level and four-level systems, which are either closed or open (due to losses to an external metastable level). We find that the EIT dip almost disappears in a closed three-level system but survives in an open system. In four-level systems, there is a narrow enhanced-absorption peak (EITA) at line center, which has applications as an optical clock. The peak converts to an EIT dip in a closed system, but again survives in an open system. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
