Treatment of gem-dihalo-1,2-cyclopropanated D-oxyglycal with primary, secondary, and unsaturated alcohols, in the presence of AgOAc, leads to the formation of chloro-oxepines exclusively. Reaction of the resulting 2-chloro-oxepines with excess alcohol in the presence of AgOAc, do not promote further reactions. This result is in contrast to the reactions of D-glucal derived halo-oxepine with alcohols known previously that lead to the formation of furanoses as the major product under similar reaction conditions. Observation of this study consolidates the reactivity differences of gem-dihalo-1,2-cyclopropanated oxyglycals, as compared to gem-dihalo- 1,2-cyclopropanated glycals. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. We present a multipartite protocol in a counterfactual paradigm. In counterfactual quantum cryptography, secure information is transmitted between two spatially separated parties even when there is no physical travel of particles transferring the information between them. We propose here a tripartite counterfactual quantum protocol for the task of certificate authorization. Here a trusted third party, Alice, authenticates an entity Bob (e.g., a bank) that a client Charlie wishes to securely transact with. The protocol is counterfactual with respect to either Bob or Charlie. We prove its security against a general incoherent attack, where Eve attacks single particles.

alpha-Amino gamma-lactams have been synthesized from carbohydrate derived cyclopropanecarboxylates using N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) and NaN3. Cyclopropane ring opening with NIS and NaN3 in different solvents has been studied. Reductive cyclization of the intermediate di-azides leads to the carbohydrate fused alpha-amino gamma-lactam and gamma-lactams. Additionally, the methodology has been successfully extended to the synthesis of a glycopeptide. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A systematic study of six tetracyclones has been carried out using experimental and theoretical charge density analysis. A three pronged approach based on quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS) criterion, and source function (SF) contributions has been performed to establish the degree of antiaromaticity of the central five-membered ring in all the derivatives. Electrostatic potentials mapped on the isodensity surface show that electron withdrawing substituents turn both C and O atoms of the carbonyl group more electropositive while retaining the direction of polarity.

We present a photoanode for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) based on ZnO nanoshell deposited by atomic layer deposition at 150 degrees C on a mesoporous insulating template. An ultrathin layer of ZnO between. 3 and 6 nm, which exhibits quantum confinement effect, is found to be sufficient to transport the photogenerated electrons to the external contacts and exhibits near-unity collection efficiency. A 6 nm ZnO nanoshell on a 2.5 mu m mesoporous nanoparticle Al2O3 template yields photovoltaic power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.2% in liquid DSC. Perovskite absorber (CH3NH3PbI3) based solid state solar cells made with similar ZnO nanostructures lead to a high PCE of 7%.

This work considers how the properties of hydrogen bonded complexes, X-H center dot center dot center dot Y, are modified by the quantum motion of the shared proton. Using a simple two-diabatic state model Hamiltonian, the analysis of the symmetric case, where the donor (X) and acceptor (Y) have the same proton affinity, is carried out. For quantitative comparisons, a parametrization specific to the O-H center dot center dot center dot O complexes is used. The vibrational energy levels of the one-dimensional ground state adiabatic potential of the model are used to make quantitative comparisons with a vast body of condensed phase data, spanning a donor-acceptor separation (R) range of about 2.4-3.0 angstrom, i.e., from strong to weak hydrogen bonds. The position of the proton (which determines the X-H bond length) and its longitudinal vibrational frequency, along with the isotope effects in both are described quantitatively. An analysis of the secondary geometric isotope effect, using a simple extension of the two-state model, yields an improved agreement of the predicted variation with R of frequency isotope effects. The role of bending modes is also considered: their quantum effects compete with those of the stretching mode for weak to moderate H-bond strengths. In spite of the economy in the parametrization of the model used, it offers key insights into the defining features of H-bonds, and semi-quantitatively captures several trends. Experimental quantum simulation of a Hamiltonian H requires unitary operator decomposition (UOD) of its evolution unitary U = exp(-iHt) in terms of native unitary operators of the experimental system. Here, using a genetic algorithm, we numerically evaluate the most generic UOD (valid over a continuous range of Hamiltonian parameters) of the unitary operator U, termed fidelity-profile optimization. The optimization is obtained by systematically evaluating the functional dependence of experimental unitary operators (such as single-qubit rotations and time-evolution unitaries of the system interactions) to the Hamiltonian (H) parameters. Using this technique, we have solved the experimental unitary decomposition of a controlled-phase gate (for any phase value), the evolution unitary of the Heisenberg XY interaction, and simulation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of the Heisenberg XY interaction. Using these decompositions, we studied the entanglement dynamics of a Bell state in the DM interaction and experimentally verified the entanglement preservation procedure of Hou et al. Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 327, 292 (2012)] in a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor.

Compliant mechanisms are elastic continua used to transmit or transform force and motion mechanically. The topology optimization methods developed for compliant mechanisms also give the shape for a chosen parameterization of the design domain with a fixed mesh. However, in these methods, the shapes of the flexible segments in the resulting optimal solutions are restricted either by the type or the resolution of the design parameterization. This limitation is overcome in this paper by focusing on optimizing the skeletal shape of the compliant segments in a given topology. It is accomplished by identifying such segments in the topology and representing them using Bezier curves. The vertices of the Bezier control polygon are used to parameterize the shape-design space. Uniform parameter steps of the Bezier curves naturally enable adaptive finite element discretization of the segments as their shapes change. Practical constraints such as avoiding intersections with other segments, self-intersections, and restrictions on the available space and material, are incorporated into the formulation. A multi-criteria function from our prior work is used as the objective. Analytical sensitivity analysis for the objective and constraints is presented and is used in the numerical optimization. Examples are included to illustrate the shape optimization method.

The shape dynamics of droplets exposed to an air jet at intermediate droplet Reynolds numbers is investigated. High speed imaging and hot-wire anemometry are employed to examine the mechanism of droplet oscillation. The theory that the vortex shedding behind the droplet induces oscillation is examined. In these experiments, no particular dominant frequency is found in the wake region of the droplet. Hence the inherent free-stream disturbances prove to be driving the droplet oscillations. The modes of droplet oscillation show a band of dominant frequencies near the corresponding natural frequency, further proving that there is no particular forcing frequency involved. In the frequency spectrum of the lowest mode of oscillation for glycerol at the highest Reynolds number, no response is observed below the threshold frequency corresponding to the viscous dissipation time scale. This selective suppression of lower frequencies in the case of glycerol is corroborated by scaling arguments. The influence of surface tension on the droplet oscillation is studied using ethanol as a test fluid. Since a lower surface tension reduces the natural frequency, ethanol shows lower excited frequencies. The oscillation levels of different fluids are quantified using the droplet aspect ratio and correlated in terms of Weber number and Ohnesorge number. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Insertion reactions of six-membered cyclopalladated N,N',N''-triarylguanidines, kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(mu-Br)](2) with various alkynes in CH2Cl2 under ambient conditions afforded diinserted eight-membered palladacycles, (kappa(2)(C,N):eta(2)(C=C)-PdBr] (1-11), in high yield (76-96%), while insertion reactions of six-membered cyclopalladated N,N',N''-triarylguanidines, kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(Lewis base)Br] (VI-XI), with various alkynes under the aforementioned conditions afforded monoinserted six-membered palladacycles, kappa(2)(C,N)-Pd(Lewis base)Br] (12-21), in high yield (81-91%) except for 14 (23%). The insertion reaction of VI with 2 equiv of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) and the insertion reaction of 12 with 1 equiv of DMAD in CH2Cl2 under ambient conditions resulted in the formation of a diinserted zwitterionic five-membered palladacycle, kappa(2)(C,C)Pd(2,6-lutidine)Br] (22), in 76% and 70% yields, respectively. Palladacycle 22 upon reaction with AgOTf in wet MeCN afforded the ionic palladacycle kappa(2)(C,C)Pd(2,6-lutidine)(H2O)]OTf] (23) in 78% yield. The ring size of the ``kappa(2)(C,N)Pd]'' unit in the structurally characterized diinserted palladacycles (1 center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2)center dot H2O, 2, 5, and 7), and monoinserted palladacycles (17, 18, and 20 center dot C7H8 H2O) is smaller than that anticipated for mono- and diinserted palladacycles, and this feature is mainly ascribed to the proclivity of III-XI to undergo ring contraction cum amine-imine tautomerization upon alkyne insertion. Palladacycle 22 represents the first diinserted product obtained in alkyne insertion reactions of kappa(2)(C,N)Pd(Lewis base)X] type palladarycles. The molecular structure of 22 center dot H2O determined by X-ray diffraction indicates that the positive charge on the guanidinium moiety is balanced by the negative charge on the palladium atom and thus represents the first structurally characterized zwitterionic palladacycle to be reported in alkyne insertion chemistry. Plausible mechanisms of formation of 12-21 and 22 have been outlined. The presence of more than one species in solution for some of the palladacycles in the series 1-7 and 12-21 was explained by invoking the C-N single-bond rotation of the CN3 unit of the guanidine moiety, while this process in conjunction with Pd-N(lutidine) bond rotation was invoked to explain the presence of four isomers of 15, as studied with the aid of variable-concentration H-1 NMR experiments carried out for 14 and 15.

We reinterpret and generalize conjectures of Lam and Williams as statements about the stationary distribution of a multispecies exclusion process on the ring. The central objects in our study are the multiline queues of Ferrari and Martin. We make some progress on some of the conjectures in different directions. First, we prove Lam and Williams' conjectures in two special cases by generalizing the rates of the Ferrari-Martin transitions. Secondly, we define a new process on multiline queues, which have a certain minimality property. This gives another proof for one of the special cases; namely arbitrary jump rates for three species. Although semiconductor quantum dots are promising materials for displays and lighting due to their tunable emissions, these materials also suffer from the serious disadvantage of self-absorption of emitted light. The reabsorption of emitted light is a serious loss mechanism in practical situations because most phosphors exhibit subunity quantum yields. Manganese-based phosphors that also exhibit high stability and quantum efficiency do not suffer from this problem but in turn lack emission tunability, seriously affecting their practical utility. Here, we present a class of manganese-doped quantum dot materials, where strain is used to tune the wavelength of the dopant emission, extending the otherwise limited emission tunability over the yellow-orange range for manganese ions to almost the entire visible spectrum covering all colors from blue to red. These new materials thus combine the advantages of both quantum dots and conventional doped phosphors, thereby opening new possibilities for a wide range of applications in the future.

In the present work, Pt nanoparticles were produced from a reaction mixture containing a trace amount of cobalt carbonyl salt acting as a shape inducer. Nanoparticle shape evolution during reaction mixture reflux was monitored by characterizing particles extracted from the reaction mixture at different times. It was observed that 5 min of reflux produced spherical nanoparticles, 30 min of reflux produced cube shaped nanoparticles, and 60 min of reflux produced truncated octahedron morphology nanoparticles. It is illustrated that during nanoparticle synthesis the reflux process can provide energy needed for shape transformation from a metastable cube morphology to a truncated octahedron morphology which is thermodynamically the most stable geometry for fcc crystals. An optimization of the reaction reflux is thus needed for isolating metastable shapes.

Wing morphing is one of the emerging methodology towards improving aerodynamic efficiency of flight vehicle structures. In this paper a morphing structural element is designed and studied which has its origin in the well known chiral structures. The new aspect of design and functionality explored in this paper is that the chiral cell is actuated using thermal Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator wires to provide directional motion. Such structure utilizes the potential of different actuations concepts based on actuator embedded in the chiral structure skin. This paper describes a new class of chiral cell structure with integrated SMA wire for actuation. Chiral topological constructs are obtained by considering passive and active load path decoupling and sub-optimal shape changes. Single cell of chiral honeycomb with actuators are analyzed using finite element simulation results and experiments. To this end, a multi-cell plan-form is characterized showing interesting possibilities in structural morphing applications. The applicability of the developed chiral cell to flexible wing skin, variable stiffness based design and controlling longitudinal-to-transverse stiffness ratio are discussed.

Debonding of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires in SMA reinforced polymer matrix composites is a complex phenomenon compared to other fabric fiber debonding in similar matrix composites. This paper focuses on experimental study and analytical correlation of stress required for debonding of thermal SMA actuator wire reinforced composites. Fiber pull-out tests are carried out on thermal SMA actuator at parent state to understand the effect of stress induced detwinned martensites. An ASTM standard is followed as benchmark method for fiber pull-out test. Debonding stress is derived with the help of non-local shear-lag theory applied to elasto-plastic interface. Furthermore, experimental investigations are carried out to study the effect of Laser shot peening on SMA surface to improve the interfacial strength. Variation in debonding stress due to length of SMA wire reinforced in epoxy are investigated for non-peened and peened SMA wires. Experimental results of interfacial strength variation due to various L/d ratio for non-peened and peened SMA actuator wires in epoxy matrix are discussed.
