The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour (CCOT) is a rare benign cystic neoplasm not infrequently associated with odontoma. This report documents a case of CCOT associated with compound odontoma arising in the anterior maxilla in a 25-year-old woman. Conventional radiographs showed a large calcified mass with poorly visualized radiolucent margins. The extent and condition of the internal structure of the CCOT associated with odontoma was able to be determined based on radiographic findings from cone beam computed tomography. This advanced image technique proved to be extremely useful in the radiographic assessment of this particular neoplasm of the jawbones.

Over the last few years, neurologists have been showing increasing interest in the study of the sympathetic skin response (SSR). In the present report we describe a simple method that permitted us to determine a wide variation of SSR in response to different stimuli such as respiration, deglutition, blinking, skeletal movements, biting, auditory or light stimuli, vocalization, and sphincter contraction. These results raise doubts about the role of SSR as a complementary diagnostic method.

Three experimental protocols were carried out with the aim of evaluating the role of protein restriction on the progression of the established adriamycin-induced nephropathy, and whether the protective effect of the diet persists after the diet is discontinued. The effect of a low protein diet (LPD) was studied for 6 weeks in protocol 1, 16 weeks in protocol 2 and for 28 weeks in protocol 3. In protocol 3, one group (LL) received LPD and another (NN) was given a normal protein diet (NPD). A third group (LN) received LPD for 16 weeks and then NPD for 12 weeks and a fourth group (NL) was fed NPD for 16 weeks and then LPD for 12 weeks. In protocol I the tubulo- interstitial index (TILl) of rats on LPD (Md = 2, P25 = 0.0; P75 = 3.5) after six weeks, was smaller than that of the animals on NPD (Md = 6.0; P25 = 3.0; P75 = 8.0; p < 0.05). In protocol 2, the group taking LPD presented an area of interstitial fibrosis (IF) (Md= 0.5%, P25 0.2%; P75 = 1.9%) smaller than that of the NPD group (Md = 6.8%; P25 = 5.2%; P75 = 7.1%; P < 0.05). No significant difference in the area of glomerulosclerosis (GSA) was observed between the animals on LPD (Md = 0.0%; P25 = 0.0%, P75 = 0.0%) and NPD (Md = 0.37%; P25 = 02% P75 = 1.25%; p > 0.05). In protocol 3, the group LL showed GSA (Md = 1.3%; P25 0.6%, P75 = 2.5%) and IF (Md = 3.60/0; P25 = 1.6%; P75 = 5.9%) smaller that those of LN (GSA Md = 10.1%; P25 = 6.6%; P75 = 14.8%; IF; Md = 17.3%; P25 = 14.1%; P75 = 24,5%), NL (GSA: Md = 9.1%; P25 = 5,8%; P75 = 11.7%; IF; Md = 25.0%; P25 = 20.4%; P75 = 30%), and NN (GSA: Md = 6. 75%; P25 = 4.9%; P75 = 11.7%; IF: Md = 20.9%; P25 = 16.2%; P75 = 32.4%). In conclusion, in order to be effective, LPD must be introduced early and maintained for a long period of tune.

Growth, reproduction and biochemical composition were analyzed for the copepod Argyrodiaptomus furcatus fed on the alga Ankistrodesmus gracilis grown in different media. The ingestion of this copepod by larvae of two species of tropical fishes was also evaluated. The mean peak density of the copepod population was 1369 individuals 1-1 for all four diets used, and the highest was 1387 individuals 1-1 on diet ARV (algae + ration + vitamins). A small copepod, A. furcatus tends to have a short life span. The smallest females did not attain maturity in the shortest time on all diets used. Food quality may play a major role in the dynamics of the biochemical composition of this copepod. Argyrodiaptomus furcatus was a more important food item for larvae of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) than of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). However, it made up a large part of the gut contents of larvae of both species.

Photoinhibition, defined as the inhibition of photosynthesis caused by excessive radiance, affects field production to a great extent. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in reforestation practices, when one deals with forests of rapid growth such as Eucalyptus. The imposition of additional stress factors during exposure to high radiance increases the potential for photoinhibitory effects, so the inhibition of photosynthesis indicates that the plant is submitted to stressful conditions. Photoinhibition can be reversible, playing a protective role for the photosynthetic systems, but it can also reflect damage that has already occurred in the photosynthetic apparatus, being irreversible in this case. In this review, we present the physiological and molecular mechanisms of photoinhibition and discuss the interaction between light and other stress factors and its effects on plants destined for reforestation. In addition, the present work analyzes some of the features and strategies that help plants avoid or restrict the occurrence of photoinhibition. For instance, pigments and enzymes which naturally occur in plants can prevent photoinhibition, while preadaptation to nonideal conditions can enhance tolerance to a certain stress factor. Most of these morphological, metabolic, and biochemical mechanisms of defense are related to the dissipation of excessive energy such as heat. Understanding these mechanisms can help improve cultivation procedures, avoid the plants' death, and increase productivity in the field.

The first pair of legs in males of some groups of diplopods is modified, having a large coxa and oral projecting prefemoral process; in the family Spirostreptidae (Spirostreptida) this structure has relevance on the genus level. This paper discusses the shape, presence, and absence of the prefemoral process in the genus Pseudonannolene (Pseudonannolenidae, Spirostreptida) and suggests that this structure is an important taxonomic character in this genus and can be used for distinguishing some species.

Four perylene derivatives (PTCD) have been used as transducing materials in taste sensors fabricated with nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited onto interdigitated gold electrodes. The Langmuir monolayers of PTCDs display considerable collapse pressures, with areas per molecule indicative of an edge-on or head-on arrangement for the molecules at the air/water interface. The sensing units for the electronic tongue were produced from 5-layer LB films of the four PTCDs, whose electrical response was characterized with impedance spectroscopy. The distinct responses of the PTCDs, attributed to differences in their molecular structures, allowed one to obtain a finger printing system that was able to distinguish tastes (salty, sweet, bitter and sour) at 1 μM concentrations, which, in some cases, are three orders of magnitude below the human threshold. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) data analysis, the electronic tongue also detected trace amounts of a pesticide and could distinguish among samples of ultrapure, distilled and tap water, and two brands of mineral water. © 2004 by American Scientific Publishers. We studied feeding habits of four fish species in two watershed at APA - Área de Proteção Ambiental (Area of Environmental Protection) in São Pedro and Analândia, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Feeding Preference Degree (FPD) was used to demonstrate the importance of each food item for the species of both basins. Feeding habits of both species of lambari was variable. The allochtonous items such as insects, autochtonous items, and vegetal material were very important, characterizing omnivory. The bagre (Rhamdia quelen) fed mainly on insects at the Jacaré-pepira Basin and also on fishes at the Corumbataí basin. The cascudo Hypostomus strigaticeps ingested autochtonous vegetal material and sediments at both basins.

Fishes of the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae are very common and found in the lowlands of cis-Andean South America from Venezuela to the north of Argentina. With the main objective of contributing for a better understanding of the importance of chromosome rearrangements in the loricariid evolution, cytogenetic analyses were conducted in nine species of Hypoptopomatinae. The results showed a marked gross karyotypic conservation with the presence of 2n=54 chromosomes in all species analyzed. The main differences were found in the karyotypic formulae level. Most species had a single interstitial Ag-NORs, however terminal Ag-NORs were observed in three species. One species exhibited two Ag-NOR-bearing chromosome pairs. The distribution of C-band positive segments was species specific but chromosome markers were observed among the species analyzed. The gross cytogenetic characteristics observed among the Hypoptopomatinae species are similar to those observed in other primitive Loricariidae species suggesting that small changes, mainly paracentric and pericentric inversion were the main events in the karyotypic evolution of this fish group.
