Glass nanocomposites in the system (1-x)Li2B4O7-xBi(2)WO(6) (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.35, in molar ratio) were fabricated by splat quenching technique. The as-quenched samples were X-ray amorphous. Differential Thermal Analyses (DTA) confirmed their glassy nature. The composites on heat-treatment at 720 K yielded monophasic crystalline bismuth tungstate in lithium borate glass matrix. The average size and the spherical nature of the dispersed crystallites were assessed via High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The dielectric constants (epsilon(r)) of both the as-quenched and post heat-treated composites were found to increase with increase in x (bismuth tungstate content) at all the frequencies (100 Hz-40 MHz) in the temperature range 300 K-870 K. While the dielectric loss (D) decreased with increasing x. The pyroelectric coefficients of the as-quenched (consisting 20 nm sized crystallites) and 720 K heat-treated sample (x = 0.3) were determined as a function of temperature (300 K-873 K) and the values obtained at room temperature were 20 and 60 muC/m(2) K respectively. The as-quenched and heat-treated (720 K) glass nanocomposites exhibited ferroelectric (P Vs E) hysteresis loops. The remnant polarization and coercive field of the heat-treated glass nanocomposite at 300 K were respectively 2.597 muC/cm(2) and 543 V/cm. These glass nanocomposites were birefringent in the 300-873 K temperature range.

Nanoembedded lead-tin alloys in aluminum matrix were synthesized by rapid solidification processing. These melt-spun aluminum alloys were then investigated using XRD, EDX and TEM. The XRD study reveals that the melt-spun samples contain elemental aluminum, lead and tin. The TEM analysis shows that embedded particles in aluminium matrix have a distinct two-phase contrast of lead and tin. The lead and tin in these nanoalloys exhibit an orientation relationship with the matrix aluminum and with each other. DSC studies were conducted to reveal the melting and solidification characteristics of these embedded nanoalloys. DSC thermograms exhibit features of multiple solidification exotherms on thermal cycling, which can be attributed to sequential melting and solidification of lead and tin in the respective alloys.

Aluminium nitride (AlN)-Al matrices reinforced with Al2O3 particulate have been fabricated by reactive infiltration of Al-2% Mg alloy into Al2O3 preforms in N-2 in the temperature range of 900-1075 degreesC. The growth of composites of useful thickness was facilitated by the presence of a Mg-rich external getter, in the absence of which composite growth is self-limiting and terminates prematurely. Successful growth of composites has been attributed to the reduction in residual oxygen partial pressure brought about by the reaction with oxygen of highly volatile Mg in the getter alloy. The microstructure of the matrix consists of AlN-rich regions contiguous with the particulate with metal-rich channels in-between, thereby suggesting that nitridation initiates by preferential wicking of alloy along the particle surfaces. The increase in nitride content of the matrix with temperature is consistent with hardness values that vary between similar to3 and 10 GPa. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Epoxy systems containing HTBN rubber material and reinforced with E-glass fibres, exposed to a fixed time duration in three separate media were subjected to compressive mode of deformation. The yield stress and fractographic features noted on the compression failed samples are reported in this work. The experiment reveals that the seawater exposed sample exhibits a drop in strength compared to dry (unexposed) sample. This kind of drop is maintained if the media is changed from seawater to distilled water. When HCl is included in seawater. the experiment shows a small rise in strength value. These changes have been attributed to various factors like medium ingress into samples assisting interface failure, the larger-sized Cl- influencing the extent of diffusion of medium into system and finally their participation in the deformation phenomena. The fractographic features reveal interface separations that show either scattered debris or a cleaner surface or display a whitish-coated matrix region depending on whether the tests are done on unexposed samples or on ones following the immersion in the media.

We study the nature of excited states of long polyacene oligomers within a Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian using the Symmetrized Density Matrix Renormalization Group (SDMRG) technique. We find a crossover between the two-photon state and the lowest dipole allowed excited state as the system size is increased from tetracene to pentacene. The spin-gap is the smallest gap. We also study the equilibrium geome tries in the ground and excited states from bond orders and bond-bond correlation functions. We find that the Peierls instability in the ground state of polyacene is conditional both from energetics and structure factors computed froth correlation functions.

The role of matrix microstructure on the fracture of Al-alloy composites with 60 vol% alumina particulates was studied. The matrix composition and microstructure were systematically varied by changing the infiltration temperature and heat treatment. Characterization was carried out by a combination of metallography, hardness measurements, and fracture studies conducted on compact tension specimens to study the fracture toughness and crack growth in the composites. The composites showed a rise in crack resistance with crack extension (R curves) due to bridges of intact matrix ligaments formed in the crack wake. The steady-state or plateau toughness reached upon stable crack growth was observed to be more sensitive to the process temperature rather than to the heat treatment. Fracture in the composites was predominantly by particle fracture, extensive deformation, and void nucleation in the matrix. Void nucleation occurred in the matrix in the as-solutionized and peak-aged conditions and preferentially near the interface in the underaged and overaged conditions. Micromechanical models based on crack bridging by intact ductile ligaments were modified by a plastic constraint factor from estimates of the plastic zone formed under indentations, and are shown to be adequate in predicting the steady-state toughness of the composite.

The present work combines two rapidly growing research areas-functional supramolecular gels and lanthanide based hybrid materials. Facile hydrogel formation from several lanthanide(III) cholates has been demonstrated. The morphological and mechanical properties of these cholate gels were investigated by TEM and rheology. The hydrogel matrix was subsequently utilized for the sensitization of Tb(III) by doping a non-coordinating chromophore, 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN), at micromolar concentrations. In the mixed gels of Tb(III)-Eu(III), an energy transfer pathway was found to operate from Tb(III) to Eu(III) and by utilizing this energy transfer, tunable multiple-color luminescent hydrogels were obtained. The emissive properties of the hydrogels were also retained in the xerogels and their suspensions in n-hexane were used for making luminescent coating on glass surface.

Cobalt and iron nanoparticles are doped in carbon nanotube (CNT)/polymer matrix composites and studied for strain and magnetic field sensing properties. Characterization of these samples is done for various volume fractions of each constituent (Co and Fe nanoparticles and CNTs) and also for cases when only either of the metallic components is present. The relation between the magnetic field and polarization-induced strain are exploited. The electronic bandgap change in the CNTs is obtained by a simplified tight-binding formulation in terms of strain and magnetic field. A nonlinear constitutive model of glassy polymer is employed to account for (1) electric bias field dependent softening/hardening (2) CNT orientations as a statistical ensemble and (3) CNT volume fraction. An effective medium theory is then employed where the CNTs and nanoparticles are treated as inclusions. The intensity of the applied magnetic field is read indirectly as the change in resistance of the sample. Very small magnetic fields can be detected using this technique since the resistance is highly sensitive to strain. Its sensitivity due to the CNT volume fraction is also discussed. The advantage of this sensor lies in the fact that it can be molded into desirable shape and can be used in fabrication of embedded sensors where the material can detect external magnetic fields on its own. Besides, the stress-controlled hysteresis of the sample can be used in designing memory devices. These composites have potential for use in magnetic encoders, which are made of a magnetic field sensor and a barcode.

We consider the problem of maintaining information about the rank of a matrix $M$ under changes to its entries. For an $n \times n$ matrix $M$, we show an amortized upper bound of $O(n^{\omega-1})$ arithmetic operations per change for this problem, where $\omega < 2.376$ is the exponent for matrix multiplication, under the assumption that there is a {\em lookahead} of up to $\Theta(n)$ locations. That is, we know up to the next $\Theta(n)$ locations $(i_1,j_1),(i_2,j_2),\ldots,$ whose entries are going to change, in advance; however we do not know the new entries in these locations in advance. We get the new entries in these locations in a dynamic manner.
