Global changes linked to increases in temperature and ocean acidification, but also to more direct anthropogenic influences such as aquaculture, have caused a worldwide increase in the reports of Vibrio-associated illnesses affecting humans and also animals such as shrimp and molluscs. Investigation of the emergence of Vibrio pathogenesis events requires the analysis of microbial evolution at the gene, genome and population levels, in order to identify genomic modifications linked to increased virulence, resistance and/or prevalence, or to recent host shift. From a more applied point of view, the elucidation of virulence mechanisms is a prerequisite to devising prophylactic methods to fight infectious agents. In comparison with human pathogens, fairly little is known about the requirements for virulence in vibrios pathogenic to animals. However, the advent of genome sequencing, especially next-generation technologies, the possibility of genetically manipulating most of the Vibrio strains, and the recent availability of standardised animals for experimental infections have now compensated for the considerable delay in advancement of the knowledge of non-model pathogens such as Vibrio and have led to new scientific questions.

Purpose: To evaluate the antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of the secondary metabolites of Lobophytum sp. Methods: Maceration with methanol: chloroform (1:1) was applied to extract the coral material. Chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques were employed for fractionation, isolation and elucidation of pure compounds. Antibacterial activities were performed by well diffusion method against three Gram-positive and four Gram-negative bacteria. Brine shrimp lethality test was employed to predict toxicity, while antitumor activity were tested by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method against Ehrlich carcinoma cells. Results: Four sesquiterpenes, one cembranoid type diterpenes and two steroids were isolated. 1 exhibited significant antibacterial activity against four tested bacteria (P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, S. epidermis, and S. pneumonia) with MIC value of 15 μg/mL. Moreover, 1 showed high diameter zone of inhibition ranging from 16 - 18 mm against test bacteria. Compounds 4 and 5 displayed moderate antibacterial activity against all test bacteria with inhibition zone diameter (IZD) ranging from 11 – 15 mm and MIC values of 30 μg/mL. 2, 3, 6 and 7 exhibited weak antibacterial activity (IZD, 7 - 11 mm; MIC ≥ 30 μg/mL). In addition, only diterpene compound (4) showed high toxicity against A. Salina and antitumor activity against Erhlich carcinoma cells with the LD50 of 25 and 50 μg/mL, respectively. Conclusion: This study reveals the strong antibacterial activity of sesquiterpene alismol (1) and the potential antibacterial and antitumor activity of cembranoid type diterpene, cembrene A (4).

The search for natural antioxidants is an ongoing endeavour as an aid to combat the harmful effects of free radicals. Research advances in the past few decades have shown that, by controlled enzymatic hydrolysis, natural antioxidants can be produced from food proteins. In this chapter, the role of certain antioxidative peptides derived from food proteins is discussed in relation to their prospect in the prevention of oxidative stress. The molecular diversity of these food peptides is described together with their pharmacological effects and mechanisms of action in relation to antioxidation. The production of these peptides and the elucidation of their antioxidative peptides are also presented. Owing to their therapeutic potential, antioxidative peptides derived from food proteins can be incorporated as ingredients in functional foods, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals, where their biological activities may inhibit product oxidation or assist in the control and prevention of diseases induced by free radicals. However, further insightful research is needed to overcome certain scientific challenges and thereby increase and promote consumer acceptance of these natural antioxidants.

This paper outlines a journey of arts-based inquiry into teacher education and identity transformation in the transition to teaching, guided by Barone and Eisner’s Seven Features of Arts-Based Educational Inquiry. Employing a theatre-based research approach the researcher investigated teachers’ epiphanic or revelatory first moments of identity transformation, culminating in the creation of the play script and performance: ‘The First Time’. The article discusses what Barone and Eisner’s works offered this arts-based researcher on their journey. Outcomes of the research include the value of working backwards from this frame for further data elucidation and analysis and presenting research to relevant ‘expert’ audiences.

CEs are the most frequently detected pollutants in groundwater. Several studies have been shown iron-based bimetallic reductants as a good method toward to chlorinated ethylenes degradation. However, many fundamental issues surrounding the chemistry of this phenomena remains elusive. In this study, kinetics and compound specific isotope analysis for reductive dechlorination of TCE and cis-DCE by unamended iron and iron-based bimetal reductants was evaluated. Generally, all the bimetals reductants tested revealed to increase the reactivity of the degradation, in which palladium and nickel were the additional metals more reactive. Ethene and ethane were the major products of TCE degradation. It is supported the simultaneous hydrogenolysis and β-elimination reaction hypothesis, however, the first step of TCE degradation by Au/Fe undergoes preferably by β-elimination, while by unamended iron, Pt/Fe and Co/Fe goes preferably by hydrogenolysis.
