Well-densified 10 mol% Dy2O3-doped CeO2 (20DDC) ceramics with average grain sizes of similar to 0.12-1.5 mu m were fabricated by pressureless sintering at 950-1550 degrees C using a reactive powder thermally decomposed from a carbonate precursor, which was synthesized via a carbonate coprecipitation method employing nitrates as the starting salts and ammonium carbonate as the precipitant. Electrical conductivity of the ceramics, measured by the dc three-point impedance method, shows a V-shape curve against the average grain size. The sample with the smallest grain size of 0.12 mu m exhibits a high conductivity of similar to 10(-1.74) S/cm at the measurement temperature of 700 degrees C, which is about the same conduction level of the micro-grained 10 mol% Sm2O3- or Gd2O3-doped CeO2, two leading electrolyte materials. Conventional bioimpedance spectrometers measure resistance and reactance over a range of frequencies and, by application of a mathematical model for an equivalent circuit (the Cole model), estimate resistance at zero and infinite frequencies. Fitting of the experimental data to the model is accomplished by iterative, nonlinear curve fitting. An alternative fitting method is described that uses only the magnitude of the measured impedances at four selected frequencies. The two methods showed excellent agreement when compared using data obtained both from measurements of equivalent circuits and of humans. These results suggest that operational equivalence to a technically complex, frequency-scanning, phase-sensitive BIS analyser could be achieved from a simple four-frequency, impedance-only analyser.

A new mutual impedance - the receiving mutual impedance - between two normal-mode helical antennas is defined, measured, and theoretically calculated. The variations of the receiving mutual impedance with antenna separation, with frequency, and with excitation source direction are critically investigated. An application of the receiving mutual impedance in direction finding demonstrates its more accurate description of the mutual coupling effect than that using the conventional mutual impedance.

There is an increase in the use of multi-pulse, rectifier-fed motor-drive equipment on board more-electric aircraft. Motor drives with feedback control appear as constant power loads to the rectifiers, which can cause instability of the DC filter capacitor voltage at the output of the rectifier. This problem can be exacerbated by interactions between rectifiers that share a common source impedance. In order that such a system can be analysed, there is a need for average, dynamic models of systems of rectifiers. In this study, an efficient, compact method for deriving the approximate, linear, large-signal, average models of two heterogeneous systems of rectifiers, which are fed from a common source impedance, is presented. The models give insight into significant interaction effects that occur between the converters, and that arise through the shared source impedance. First, a 6-pulse and doubly wound, transformer-fed, 12-pulse rectifier system is considered, followed by a 6-pulse and autotransformer-fed, 12-pulse rectifier system. The system models are validated against detailed simulations and laboratory prototypes, and key characteristics of the two system types are compared.

A novel metathesis catalyst for the polymerisation of acetylene has been developed. The polyacetylene produced by this new catalyst has been characterised by infra-red and NMR spectroscopy. The conductivity of the pristine material has been studied as a function of temperature, pressure and frequency. The effect on the conductivity of doping the material has also been investigated. The new metathesis catalyst has been incorporated into an anionic-to-metathesis transformation reaction. This novel reaction has been used to prepare samples of poly(styrene-co-acetylene). The copolymer has been characterised using U.V./Visible, NMR, infra-red spectroscopy and the surface morphology looked at using scanning electron microscopy. GPC was also used to give some idea of the molecular weights of the materials prepared. The conductivity of the copolymer has been studied as a function of temperature, pressure and frequency. The effect of doping on the conductivity the material has also been investigated. The conductivity results obtained from both materials have been used to try and gain an insight into the mechanism of the conduction processes occurring within the materials. An attempt has also been made to synthesise polyacetylene oligomers (polyenes) by modifying the Ziegler/Natta type catalysts commonly used to synthesise polyacetylene. The polyenes were characterised using U.V./Visible and infra-red spectroscopy together with GPC and GCMS.
