The method of discrete ordinates, in conjunction with the modified "half-range" quadrature, is applied to the study of heat transfer in rarefied gas flows. Analytic expressions for the reduced distribution function, the macroscopic temperature profile and the heat flux are obtained in the general n-th approximation. The results for temperature profile and heat flux are in sufficiently good accord both with the results of the previous investigators and with the experimental data.

This paper deals with the approximate solutions of non-linear autonomous systems by the application of ultraspherical polynomials. From the differential equations for amplitude and phase, set up by the method of variation of parameters, the approximate solutions are obtained by a generalized averaging technique based on the ultraspherical polynomial expansions. The method is illustrated with examples and the results are compared with the digital and analog computer solutions. There is a close agreement between the analytical and exact results.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources, vegetation being the dominant source on a global scale. Some of these reactive compounds are deemed major contributors or inhibitors to aerosol particle formation and growth, thus making VOC measurements essential for current climate change research. This thesis discusses ecosystem scale VOC fluxes measured above a boreal Scots pine dominated forest in southern Finland. The flux measurements were performed using the micrometeorological disjunct eddy covariance (DEC) method combined with proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), which is an online technique for measuring VOC concentrations. The measurement, calibration, and calculation procedures developed in this work proved to be well suited to long-term VOC concentration and flux measurements with PTR-MS. A new averaging approach based on running averaged covariance functions improved the determination of the lag time between wind and concentration measurements, which is a common challenge in DEC when measuring fluxes near the detection limit. The ecosystem scale emissions of methanol, acetaldehyde, and acetone were substantial. These three oxygenated VOCs made up about half of the total emissions, with the rest comprised of monoterpenes. Contrary to the traditional assumption that monoterpene emissions from Scots pine originate mainly as evaporation from specialized storage pools, the DEC measurements indicated a significant contribution from de novo biosynthesis to the ecosystem scale monoterpene emissions. This thesis offers practical guidelines for long-term DEC measurements with PTR-MS. In particular, the new averaging approach to the lag time determination seems useful in the automation of DEC flux calculations. Seasonal variation in the monoterpene biosynthesis and the detailed structure of a revised hybrid algorithm, describing both de novo and pool emissions, should be determined in further studies to improve biological realism in the modelling of monoterpene emissions from Scots pine forests. The increasing number of DEC measurements of oxygenated VOCs will probably enable better estimates of the role of these compounds in plant physiology and tropospheric chemistry. Dithiocarbamates have been estimated previously by reaction with a strong acid, the carbon disulfide evolved being converted into a xanthate and the latter estimated iodimetrically. In the present method, a water-soluble dithiocarbamate is reacted with a decinormal mineral acid and the excess acid is determined to compute the amount of dithiocarbamate present. This method is applicable for the determination of a dithiocarbamate in a mixture containing thiuram disulfide.

It has been shown that the conventional practice of designing a compensated hot wire amplifier with a fixed ceiling to floor ratio results in considerable and unnecessary increase in noise level at compensation settings other than optimum (which is at the maximum compensation at the highest frequency of interest). The optimum ceiling to floor ratio has been estimated to be between 1.5-2.0 ωmaxM. Application of the above considerations to an amplifier in which the ceiling to floor ratio is optimized at each compensation setting (for a given amplifier band-width), shows the usefulness of the method in improving the signal to noise ratio.

One mole of diethyl dixanthogen reacts with 26 moles of chloramine-T, and this reaction can be used for the determination of the dixanthogen. Higher alkyl dixanthogens react in a more complicated fashion, but may still be estimated using an empirical correction.

The paper deals with a linearization technique in non-linear oscillations for systems which are governed by second-order non-linear ordinary differential equations. The method is based on approximation of the non-linear function by a linear function such that the error is least in the weighted mean square sense. The method has been applied to cubic, sine, hyperbolic sine, and odd polynomial types of non-linearities and the results obtained are more accurate than those given by existing linearization methods.
New Method for Delexicalization and its Application to Prosodic Tagging for Text-to-Speech Synthesis
Resumo:
This paper describes a new flexible delexicalization method based on glottal excited parametric speech synthesis scheme. The system utilizes inverse filtered glottal flow and all-pole modelling of the vocal tract. The method provides a possibil- ity to retain and manipulate all relevant prosodic features of any kind of speech. Most importantly, the features include voice quality, which has not been properly modeled in earlier delex- icalization methods. The functionality of the new method was tested in a prosodic tagging experiment aimed at providing word prominence data for a text-to-speech synthesis system. The ex- periment confirmed the usefulness of the method and further corroborated earlier evidence that linguistic factors influence the perception of prosodic prominence.

In this study we explore the concurrent, combined use of three research methods, statistical corpus analysis and two psycholinguistic experiments (a forced-choice and an acceptability rating task), using verbal synonymy in Finnish as a case in point. In addition to supporting conclusions from earlier studies concerning the relationships between corpus-based and ex- perimental data (e. g., Featherston 2005), we show that each method adds to our understanding of the studied phenomenon, in a way which could not be achieved through any single method by itself. Most importantly, whereas relative rareness in a corpus is associated with dispreference in selection, such infrequency does not categorically always entail substantially lower acceptability. Furthermore, we show that forced-choice and acceptability rating tasks pertain to distinct linguistic processes, with category-wise in- commensurable scales of measurement, and should therefore be merged with caution, if at all.
