A two-dimensional model is proposed for taking into account the establishment of contact on the compression side of crack faces in plates under bending. An approximate but simple method is developed for evaluating reduction of stress intensity factor due to such ‘crack closure’. Analysis is first carried out permitting interference of the crack faces. Contact forces are then introduced on the crack faces and their magnitudes determined from the consideration that the interference is just eliminated. The method is based partly on finite element analysis and partly on a continuum analysis using Irwin's solution for point loads on the crack line.

The potential of Bi2CuO4 as the first oxide system to show a linear-chain magnetic behaviour is examined. Electron diffraction studies do not resolve the previously reported ambiguity regarding its space group. The magnetic susceptibility data at high temperatures are best fitted to a uniform antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. At low temperatures, however, neither the uniform nor the alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model fits the data. Magnetic susceptibility data over the entire temperature range can be fitted if one assumes dimeric units with a nearly degenerate second singlet state close to the ground state, these states being separated from an excited triplet state by an energy gap. A simple heuristic model of a dimer that gives such an energy level spectrum is examined.

The solution conformation of alamethicin, a 20-residue antibiotic peptide, has been investigated using two-dimensional n.m.r. spectroscopy. Complete proton resonance assignments of this peptide have been carried out using COSY, SUPERCOSY, RELAY COSY and NOESY two-dimensional spectroscopies. Observation of a large number of nuclear Overhauser effects between sequential backbone amide protons, between backbone amide protons and CβH protons of preceding residues and extensive intramolecular hydrogen bonding patterns of NH protons has established that this polypeptide is in a largely helical conformation. This result is in conformity with earlier reported solid state X-ray results and a recent n.m.r. study in methanol solution (Esposito et al. (1987) Biochemistry26, 1043-1050) but is at variance with an earlier study which favored an extended conformation for the C-terminal half of alamethicin (Bannerjee et al.

The effect of surface mass transfer velocities having normal, principal and transverse direction components (vectored suction and injection) on the steady, laminar, compressible boundary layer at a three-dimensional stagnation point has been investigated both for nodal and saddle points of attachment. The similarity solutions of the boundary layer equations were obtained numerically by the method of parametric differentiation. The principal and transverse direction surface mass transfer velocities significantly affect the skin friction (both in the principal and transverse directions) and the heat transfer. Also the inadequacy of assuming a linear viscosity-temperature relation at low-wall temperatures is shown.

When the size (L) of a one-dimensional metallic conductor is less than the correlation length λ-1 of the Gaussian random potential, one expects transport properties to show ballistic behaviour. Using an invariant imbedding method, we study the exact distribution of the resistance, of the phase θ of the reflection amplitude of an incident electron of wave number k0, and of dθ/dk0, for λL ll 1. The resistance is non-self-averaging and the n-th resistance moment varies periodically as (1 - cos 2k0L)n. The charge fluctuation noise, determined by the distribution of dθ/dk0, is constant at low frequencies.

This paper is concerned with a study of an operator split scheme and unsplit scheme for the computation of adiabatic freely propagating one-dimensional premixed flames. The study uses unsteady method for both split and unsplit schemes employing implicit chemistry and explicit diffusion, a combination which is stable and convergent. Solution scheme is not sensitive to the initial starting estimate and provides steady state even with straight line profiles (far from steady state) in small number of time steps. Two systems H2-Air and H2-NO (involving complex nitrogen chemistry) are considered in presentinvestigation. Careful comparison shows that the operator split approach is slightly superior than the unsplit when chemistry becomes complex. Comparison of computational times with those of existing steady and unsteady methods seems to suggest that the method employing implicit-explicit algorithm is very efficient and robust.

An alternative pulse scheme which simplifies and improves the recently proposed P.E.COSY experiment is suggested for the retention of connected or unconnected transitions in a coupled spin system. An important feature of the proposed pulse scheme is the improved phase characteristics of the diagonal peaks. A comparison of various experiments designed for this purpose, namely COSY-45, E.COSY, P.E.COSY and the present scheme (A.E.COSY), is also presented. The suppression of unconnected transitions and the measurement of scalar coupling constants and their relative signs are illustrated from A.E.COSY spectra of 2,3-dibromopropionic acid and 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine.

The unsteady laminar incompressible three-dimensional boundary layer flow and heat transfer on a flat plate with an attached cylinder have been studied when the free stream velocity components and wall temperature vary inversely as linear and quadratic functions of time, respectively. The governing semisimilar partial differential equations with three independent variables have been solved numerically using a quasilinear finite-difference scheme. The results indicate that the skin friction increases with parameter ? which characterizes the unsteadiness in the free stream velocity and the streamwise distance Image , but the heat transfer decreases. However, the skin friction and heat transfer are found to change little along Image . The effect of the Prandtl number on the heat transfer is found to be more pronounced when ? is small, whereas the effect of the dissipation parameter is more pronounced when ? is comparatively large.

We present a simplified theoretical formulation of the thermoelectric power (TP) under magnetic quantization in quantum wells (QWs) of nonlinear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated magneto-dispersion law. We consider the anisotropies in the effective electron masses and the spin-orbit constants within the framework of k.p formalism by incorporating the influence of the crystal field splitting. The corresponding results for III-V materials form a special case of our generalized analysis under certain limiting conditions. The TP in QWs of Bismuth, II-VI, IV-VI and stressed materials has been studied by formulating appropriate electron magneto-dispersion laws. We also address the fact that the TP exhibits composite oscillations with a varying quantizing magnetic field in QWs of n-Cd3As2, n-CdGeAs2, n-InSb, p-CdS, stressed InSb, PbTe and Bismuth. This reflects the combined signatures of magnetic and spatial quantizations of the carriers in such structures. The TP also decreases with increasing electron statistics and under the condition of non-degeneracy, all the results as derived in this paper get transformed into the well-known classical equation of TP and thus confirming the compatibility test. We have also suggested an experimental method of determining the elastic constants in such systems with arbitrary carrier energy spectra from the known value of the TP. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. We study charge pumping when a combination of static potentials and potentials oscillating with a time period T is applied in a one-dimensional system of noninteracting electrons. We consider both an infinite system using the Dirac equation in the continuum approximation and a periodic ring with a finite number of sites using the tight-binding model. The infinite system is taken to be coupled to reservoirs on the two sides which are at the same chemical potential and temperature. We consider a model in which oscillating potentials help the electrons to access a transmission resonance produced by the static potentials and show that nonadiabatic pumping violates the simple sin phi rule which is obeyed by adiabatic two-site pumping. For the ring, we do not introduce any reservoirs, and we present a method for calculating the current averaged over an infinite time using the time evolution operator U(T) assuming a purely Hamiltonian evolution. We analytically show that the averaged current is zero if the Hamiltonian is real and time-reversal invariant. Numerical studies indicate another interesting result, namely, that the integrated current is zero for any time dependence of the potential if it is applied to only one site. Finally we study the effects of pumping at two sites on a ring at resonant and nonresonant frequencies, and show that the pumped current has different dependences on the pumping amplitude in the two cases.

A hydrothermal reaction of the acetate salts of the rare-earths, 5-aminoisophthalic acid (H(2)AIP), and NaOH at 150 degrees C for 3 days gave rise to a new family of three-dimensional rare-earth aminoisophthalates, M(mu(2)-OH)(C8H5NO4)] M = Y3+ (I), La3+ (II), Pr3+ (III), Nd3+ (IV), Sm3+ (V), Eu3+ (VI), Gd3+ (VII), Dy3+ (VIII), and Er3+ (IX)]. The structures contain M-O(H)-M chains connected by AIP anions. The AIP ions are connected to five metal centers and each metal center is connected with five AIP anions giving rise to a unique (5,5) net. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of a (5,5) net in metal-organic frameworks that involve rare-earth elements. The doping of Eu3+/(3+) ions in place of Y3+/ La3+ in the parent structures gave rise to characteristic metal-centered emission (red = Eu3+, green = Tb3+). Life-time studies indicated that the excited emission states in the case of Eu3+ (4 mol-% doped) are in the range 0.287-0.490 ms and for Tb3+ (4 mol-% doped) are in the range of 1.265-1.702 ms. The Nd3+-containing compound exhibits up-conversion behavior based on two-photon absorption when excited using lambda = 580 nm.

The characteristics of the separated flow behind a diaphragm over a burning surface are investigated experimentally. This complex problem of practical significance involving recirculation, blowing and combustion reactions is studied in a two-dimensional combustion tunnel. The flame structure, recirculation patterns and heat transfer to the surface are presented for a range of values of free stream and fuel injection velocities as well as for different heights of the diaphragm. The trends of heat transfer vs axial distance are shown to be similar to those resulting from a non-reactive heated stream with a diaphragm. Treating the case of a boundary layer diffusion flame as that corresponding to the zero height of the diaphragm, the heat transfer augmentation due to recirculation is estimated. It is found that at considerable downstream distances (xfh > 3), the heat transfer rates with diaphragm overtake the rates from a developing boundary layer case. Flow visualization studies with particle track photography show that there are many similarities between the reactive and the non-reactive cases.

The use of electroacoustic analogies suggests that a source of acoustical energy (such as an engine, compressor, blower, turbine, loudspeaker, etc.) can be characterized by an acoustic source pressure ps and internal source impedance Zs, analogous to the open-circuit voltage and internal impedance of an electrical source. The present paper shows analytically that the source characteristics evaluated by means of the indirect methods are independent of the loads selected; that is, the evaluated values of ps and Zs are unique, and that the results of the different methods (including the direct method) are identical. In addition, general relations have been derived here for the transfer of source characteristics from one station to another station across one or more acoustical elements, and also for combining several sources into a single equivalent source. Finally, all the conclusions are extended to the case of a uniformly moving medium, incorporating the convective as well as dissipative effects of the mean flow.
