Mangroves are sensitive to the root application of Photosystem II inhibiting herbicides and Avicennia marina is more sensitive than other mangroves tested. Seedlings of four mangrove species, including two salt-excreting species (A. marina and Aegiceras corniculatum) and two salt-excluding species (Rhizophora stylosa and Ceriops australis) were treated with a range of concentrations of the herbicides diuron, ametryn and atrazine. Assessment of responses required the separation of seedlings into two groups: those that had only their roots exposed to the herbicides through the water (A. marina and R. stylosa) and those that had both roots and leaves exposed to herbicides through the water (A. corniculatum and C australis). Salt-excreting species in each group were more susceptible to all herbicide treatments than salt-excluding species, indicating that root physiology was a major factor in the uptake of toxic pollutants in mangroves. Submergence of leaves appeared to facilitate herbicide uptake, having serious implications for seedling recruitment in the field. Each herbicide was ranked by its toxicity to mangrove seedlings from most damaging to least effective, with diuron > ametryn > atrazine. The relative sensitivity of A. marina found in these pot trials was consistent with the observed sensitivity of this species in the field, notably where severe dieback had specifically affected A. marina in the Mackay region, north eastern Australia. Mycophenolic acid (MPA) is a drug that has found widespread use as an immunosuppressive agent which limits rejection of transplanted organs. Optimal use of this drug is hampered by gastrointestinal side effects which can range in severity. One mechanism by which MPA causes gastropathy may involve a direct interaction between the drug and gastric phospholipids. To combat this interaction we have investigated the potential of MPA to coordinate Cu(II), a metal which has been used to inhibit gastropathy associated with use of the NSAID indomethacin. Using a range of spectroscopic techniques we show that Cu(II) is coordinated to two MPA molecules via carboxylates and, at low pH, water ligands. The copper complex formed is stable in solution as assessed by mass spectrometry and H-1 NMR diffusion experiments. Competition studies with glycine and albumin indicate that the copper-MPA complex will release Cu(II) to amino acids and proteins thereby allowing free MPA to be transported to its site of action. Transfer to serum albumin proceeds via a Cu(MPA)(albumin) ternary complex. These results raise the possibility that copper complexes of MPA may be useful in a therapeutic situation.

The Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes with triazolopyrimidine C-nucleosides L-1 (5,7-dimethyl-3-(2',3',5'-tri-O-benzoyl-beta-D-ribofuranosyl-s-triazolo)[4,3-a]pyrimidine), L-2 (5,7-dimethyl-3-beta-D-ribofuranosyl-s-triazolo [4,3-a]pyrimidine) and L-3 (5,7-dimethyl[1,5-a]-s-triazolopyrimidine), [Pd(en)(L-1)](NO3)(2), (Pd(bpy)(L-1)](NO3)(2), cis-Pd(L-3)(2)Cl-2, [Pd-2(L-3)(2)Cl-4]center dot H2O, cis-Pd(L-2)(2)Cl-2 and [Pt-3(L-1)(2)Cl-6] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The structure of the [Pd-2(L-3)(2)Cl-4]center dot H2O complex was established by Xray crystallography. The two L-3 ligands are found in a head to tail orientation, with a (PdPd)-Pd-... distance of 3.1254(17) angstrom.L-1 coordinates to Pd(II) through N8 and N1 forming polymeric structures. L-2 coordinates to Pd(II) through N8 in acidic solutions (0.1 M HCl) forming complexes of cis-geometry. The Pd(II) coordination to L-2 does not affect the sugar conformation probably due to the high stability of the C-C glycoside bond. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This study examined the effect of transfer to increased environmental salinity on the circulating levels of angiotensin II (ANG II), C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), and arginine vasotocin (AVT) in the euryhaline elasmobranch, Carcharhinus letteas. Plasma levels of ANG 11 and CNP were significantly increased in C. leucas chronically acclimated to seawater (SW) in comparison to freshwater (FW) acclimated fish. There was no difference in plasma AVT levels. Acute transfer of FW fish to 75% SW induced an increase in plasma ANG II levels within 12 h, and subsequent transfer from 75 to 100% SW further increased plasma ANG 11 levels at both 24 and 72 h. No change in plasma CNP was observed during acute transfer to increased salinity. However, a significant increase in plasma AVT levels was observed following 96 h in 75% SW and 24 h in 100% SW. In chronically SW acclimated C leucas plasma osmolality, sodium, chloride, and Urea were all significantly higher than FW acclimated fish but there was no difference in haematocrit. Acute transfer of C letteas to 75% SW induced a significant increase in plasma osmolality, sodium and urea concentrations within 96 h of transfer. Subsequent transfer from 75 to 100% SW induced a further increase in these variables within 24 h in addition to a significant increase in plasma chloride above control levels. Haematocrit did not differ between the experimental and control groups throughout the acute study. Circulating levels of ANG 11 were significantly correlated to plasma, sodium, chloride, and urea concentrations during acclimation to SW. Conversely, circulating levels of CNP and AVT did not correlate to plasma osmolytes, however, CNP was significantly correlated to haematocrit during acclimation to seawater. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. Copper(II) complexes of some pyridine-2-carboxamidrazones have been prepared and characterized. The crystal structures of the copper complex cis-[dichloro(N1-2-acetylthiophene-pyridine-2-carboxamidrazone) copper(II)] 8a and one of the free ligands, viz. {(p-chloro-2-thioloxy-benzylidine-pyridine-2-carboxamidrazone)} 6, have been determined. The former shows a highly distorted square planar geometry around copper, with weak intermolecular coordination from the thiophenyl sulfur resulting in a stacking arrangement in the crystal lattice. The in vitro activities of the synthesized compounds against the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum are reported for the first time, which clearly shows the advantage of copper complexation and the requirement of four coordinate geometry around copper as some of the key structural features for designing such metal-based antimalarials. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. This study aims to investigate to what extent the views of the managers of the enterprises to be privatized are a barrier to smooth implementation of privatization as opposed to other problems. Accordingly, the research tackles two main issues: Identification and analysis of the major problems encountered in the implementation of the Egyptian privatization programme and at which level these problems exist while proposing different approaches to tackle them; and views of public sector top and middle-level managers regarding the main issues of privatization. The study relies upon a literature survey, interviews with stakeholders, a survey of managers' attitudes and several illustrative case studies. A model of "good practice" for the smooth and effective implementation of privatization has been designed. Practice in Egypt has then been studied and compared with the "good practice" model. Lack of strictness and firmness in implementing the announced privatization programme has been found to be a characteristic of Egyptian practice. This is partly attributable to the inadequacy of the programme and partly to the different obstacles to implementation. The main obstacles are doubtful desirability of privatization on the part of the managers at different implementation levels, resistance of stakeholders, in adequately of the legal framework governing privatization, redundant labour, lack of an efficient monitoring system allowing for accountability, inefficient marketing of privatization, ineffective communication, insufficient information at different levels and problems related to valuation and selling procedures. A large part of the thesis is concerned with SOE (State Owned Enterprise) managers' attitudes on and understanding of the privatization (appraised through surveys). Although most managers have stated their acceptance of privatization, many of their responses show that they do not accept selling SOEs. They understand privatization to include enterprise reform and restructuring, changing procedures and giving more authority to company executives, but not necessarily as selling SOEs. The majority of managers still see many issues that have to be addressed for smooth implementation of privatization e.g. insufficiency of information, incompleteness of legal framework, restructuring and labour problems. The main contribution to knowledge of this thesis is the study of problems of implementing privatization in developing countries especially managers' resistance to privatization as a major change, partly because of the threat it poses and partly because of the lack of understanding of privatization and implications of operating private businesses. A programme of persuading managers and offsetting the unfavourable effects is recommended as an outcome of the study. Five different phrases and words for the national Index to theses are: Egypt, privatization, implementation of privatization, problems of implementing privatization and managers' attitudes towards privatization.
