The effect of lanthanum ions on the structural and conformational change of yeast tRNA(Phe) was studied by H-1 NMR. The results suggest that the tertiary base pair (G-15)(C-48), which was located in the terminal in the augmented dihydrouridine helix (D-helix), was markedly affected by adding La3+ and shifted 0.33 downfield. Based pair (U-8)(A-14), which is associated with a tertiary interaction, links the base of the acceptor stem to the D-stem and anchors the elbow of the L structure, shifted 0.20 upfield. Another imino proton that may be affected by La3+ in tRNA(Phe) is the tertiary base pair (G-19)(C-56). The assignment of this resonance is tentative since it is located in the region of highly overlapping resonances between 12.6 and 12.2. This base pair helps to anchor the D-loop to the T psi C loop.

The crystal structure of H3PMo6W6O40 3C2H6O was determined by X-ray crystallography and refined to R = 0.0698 based on 2279 observed reflections to give unit cell parameters a = 16.48(2)Angstrom, c = 25.205(5)Angstrom , gamma = 120 degrees, hexagonal, space group R (3) over bar. The organic solvent molecules were characterized also by IR, H NMR spectra. Weak interaction existed between the organic solvent and the heteropoly acid in the secondary structure. The novel compound showed different behaviours in solubility, oxidizability and photosensitivity in comparison with classical dodeca heteropolyacid of molybdenum and tungsten. The interactions of lanthanide ions and the Ln-DTPA (DTPA = diethylenetriaminepentaacetate) complex with di palmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) bilayers are studied by 2D NOESY and FT-Raman spectroscopy. Proton NMR spectroscopic results show that lanthanide ions combine with phosphate groups in the polar region of the outer layer of DPPC liposomes, leading to the separation in chemical shift of the proton signal of N(CH3)(3) The conformational change of the O-C-C-N+ backbone from the gauche conformer to the trans one is not found; i.e., the orientation of the polar headgroup is still parallel to the surface of the bilayers. The Ln-DTPA complex at low concentration in a pH 7.4 solution localizes far away from bilayers and thereby has little effect on the structure of bilayers. The FT-Raman spectroscopic results indicate that lanthanide ions affect strongly the fluidity of acyl chains of DPPE bilayers while the Ln-DTPA complex affects it slightly.

Long-range ordered stripes domain structures were observed in Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer film which was spread on the subphase of lanthanide ion (Eu3+) solution and transferred to a freshly cleaved mica substrate by vertical deposition. This novel phenomenon was discussed in terms of the competitive interaction of dipole-dipole and electrostatic interactions of the DPPC molecules combined with lanthanide ions with those DPPC molecules free of lanthanide ions.

One and two dimentional NMR methods were used to investigate the interactions of lanthanide complexes (Lncit(2) and Ln-DTPA) with phospholipid bilayers, The results showed that in the phospholipid bilayers dispersion containing citrate ligand at pH 7.4, lanthanide ions would initially combine with citrate ligand and form Lncit, complexes which have little effect on the structure of phospholipid bilayers. Ln-DTPA complex does not affect the bilayers structure either. These results provided important experimental data for evaluating scientifically the toxicities of lanthanide ions when they were introduced into the biological body.

The effect of lanthanum and calcium on the structure and function of human erythrocyte membranes was investigated by fluorescence polarization, spin- labeled electron spin resonance (ESR) and laser Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that low concentration of La3+ (0.5 mu mol/L) activated a Little (Na++K+)-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase activities, and it inhibited obvi ously the ATPase activities with increasing its concentrations. La3+ lowered the lipid fluidity of human erythrocyte membranes and decreased the vibration intensity of alpha-helix of the protein in the Amide I '. The effect of Ca2+ on the lipid fluidity and alpha-helix of the protein in the Amide I ' was smaller than that of La3+.

The special action of TEO solution was investigated by 1D, 2D-NMR in CDCl3. For the present measurements, when the concentration of TEO was higher in CDCl3, the chemical shift difference (Delta delta) and the peak number of C-13 NMR spectrum were changed with increasing the solution concentration, At lower concentration(< 3% V/V ), the peaks will be closed together for -CH2O- resonance carbon and it is not the appearance of the narrowed, When temperature was changed, the Delta delta value was contrary to the solvent effect, So, the shifts of the resonance carbon in the NMR spectra indicated clearly that the complex formation for the system of CDCl3, and TEO molecular interaction were affected by the experiment temperature and the solution concentration.

The C-H stretching, C-H bending, C-C stretching and the low-frequency vibration regions have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy for [n-CnH2n+1NH3]2 ZnCl4 with n=7 approximately 12, 16. It is found that their frequency and relative intensities are related to the length of carbon chain in the molecules and present the odd-even effect to carbon atom numbers in chain. Some changes in spectra are interpreted in terms of the different molecular packing and interaction of chain.

3-[(4-Amino-2-methyl-5-pyrimidinyl)-methyl]-5-hydroxyethyl-4-methylthiazolium bromide sesquihydrate, C12H17N4OS+.Br-.1.5H2O, M(r) = 372.28, monoclinic, P2(1)/a, a = 11.676 (2), b = 24.819(7), c = 12.344 (3) angstrom, beta = 113.74(2)-degrees, V= 3274 (1) angstrom3 , Z = 8, D(x) = 1.51 g cm-3 (Mo Kalpha) = 0.71069 angstrom, mu = 26.2 cm-1, F(000) = 1528, T 293 K, R = 0.062 for 2720 observed reflections. Both the independent thiamine molecules A and B in the asymmetric unit adopt the common F conformation. A bromide anion is held by four neighbouring thiamine molecules through C(2)-H...Br hydrogen bonds and Br ... thiazolium-ring electrostatic interactions. Another bromide anion (or a water molecule) bridges the pyrimidine and thiazolium moieties of molecule A (or B) through a hydrogen bond with the amino group and an electrostatic interaction with the thiazolium ring.

By the reaction of Cp3Ln (Cp = C5H5; Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb) with equimolar n-propyl alcohol in THF (tetrahydrofuran) at room temperature three new binuclear organolanthanide complexes, [CP2Ln(mu-OCH2CH2CH3)]2 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb), have been synthesized, as shown by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis for the complex [Cp2Yb(mu-OCH2CH2CH3)]2. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and MS spectra. The Yb2O2 unit is planar, and the ytterbium atom is coordinated by two Cp ring centroids and two oxygen atoms of two n-propyloxide ligands to form a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The average Yb-C (Cp) bond distance is 2.589(17) angstrom. The average Yb-O distance is 2.199(5) angstrom. The Yb-Yb separation [3.521(1) angstrom] indicates that no metal-metal interaction is present.

C-13 and H-1 NMR technique was used to study the interaction of Gly-Gly with heavy lanthanide cations Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+ in aqueous solution. The stability constants for the 1:1 and 1:2 complexes of Gly-Gly with Ho3+ and Yb3+ were determined from the titration curves of chemical shift versus concentration ratio of lanthanide to Gly-Gly. The solution structure of the Ln-Gly-Gly complex was analyzed based upon the C-13 and H-1 lanthanide induced shifts and the results show that in the complex Gly Gly is coordinated to the lanthanide ion through the carboxyl oxygens with the backbone of the ligand in an extended state.

Three pairs of polyimide/polyimide blends (50/50 wt%) with different molecular structures were prepared by two ways, i.e. mixing of the polyamic acid precursors with subsequent imidization, and direct solution mixing of the polyimides. The blends were studied with DMA technique. The results obtained show that all the blends prepared with these two different ways are miscible, as there existed only one glass transition temperature(Tg) for all the blends. It is suggested that the miscibility of these polyimide/polyimide blends is a result of the strong inter-molecular charge-transfer interaction between the chains of their components.
