In social anxiety disorder (SAD), impairments in limbic/paralimbic structures are associated with emotional dysregulation and inhibition of the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFq. Little is known, however, about alterations in limbic and frontal regions associated with the integrated morphometric, functional, and structural architecture of SAD. Whether altered gray matter volume is associated with altered functional and structural connectivity in SAD. Three techniques were used with 18 SAD patients and 18 healthy controls: voxel-based morphometry; resting-state functional connectivity analysis; and diffusion tensor imaging tractography. SAD patients exhibited significantly decreased gray matter volumes in the right posterior inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and right parahippocampal/hippocampal gyrus (PHG/HIP). Gray matter volumes in these two regions negatively correlated with the fear factor of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale. In addition, we found increased functional connectivity in SAD patients between the right posterior ITG and the left inferior occipital gyrus, and between the right PHF/HIP and left middle temporal gyms. SAD patients had increased right MPFC volume, along with enhanced structural connectivity in the genu of the corpus callosum. Reduced limbic/paralimbic volume, together with increased resting-state functional connectivity, suggests the existence of a compensatory mechanism in SAD. Increased MPFC volume, consonant with enhanced structural connectivity, suggests a long-time overgeneralization of structural connectivity and a role of this area in the mediation of clinical severity. Overall, our results may provide a valuable basis for future studies combining morphometric, functional and anatomical data in the search for a comprehensive understanding of the neural circuitry underlying SAD. Nine ruminally cannulated cows fed different energy sources were used to evaluate an avian-derived polyclonal antibody preparation (PAP-MV) against the specific ruminal bacteria Streptococcus bovis, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Clostridium aminophilum, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, and Clostridium stick-landii and monensin (MON) on ruminal fermentation patterns and in vivo digestibility. The experimental design was three 3 x 3 Latin squares distinguished by the main energy source in the diet [dry-ground corn grain (CG), high-moisture corn silage (HMCS), or citrus pulp (CiPu)]. Inside each Latin square, animals received one of the feed additives per period [none (CON), MON, or PAP-MV]. Dry matter intake and ruminal fermentation variables such as pH, total short-chain fatty acids (tSCFA), which included acetate, propionate, and butyrate, as well as lactic acid and NH(3)-N concentration were analyzed in this trial. Total tract DM apparent digestibility and its fractions were estimated using chromic oxide as an external marker. Each experimental period lasted 21 d. Ruminal fluid sampling was carried out on the last day of the period at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 h after the morning meal. Ruminal pH was higher (P = 0.006) 4 h postfeeding in MON and PAP-MV groups when compared with CON. Acetate: propionate ratio was greater in PAP-MV compared with MON across sampling times. Polyclonal antibodies did not alter (P > 0.05) tSCFA, molar proportion of acetate and butyrate, or lactic acid and NH(3)-N concentration. Ruminal pH was higher (P = 0.01), 4 h postfeeding in CiPu diets compared with CG and HMCS. There was no interaction between feed additive and energy source (P > 0.05) for any of the digestibility coefficients analyzed. Starch digestibility was less (P = 0.008) in PAP-MV when compared with CON and MON. In relation to energy sources, NDF digestibility was greater (P = 0.007) in CG and CiPu vs. the HMCS diet. The digestibility of ADF was greater (P = 0.002) in CiPu diets followed by CG and HMCS. Feeding PAP-MV or monensin altered ruminal fermentation patterns and digestive function in cows; however, those changes were independent of the main energy source of the diet.

In this paper, we consider solutions to the three-dimensional Schrodinger equation of the form psi(r) = u(r)/r, where u(0) not equal 0. The expectation value of the kinetic energy operator for such wavefunctions diverges. We show that it is possible to introduce a potential energy with an expectation value that also diverges, exactly cancelling the kinetic energy divergence. This renormalization procedure produces a self-adjoint Hamiltonian. We solve some problems with this new Hamiltonian to illustrate its usefulness.

Objective. This study evaluated the degree of conversion (DC), maximum rate of cure (R(p)(max)), and polymerization stress (PS) developed by an experimental dental composite subjected to different irradiant energies (3,6,12, 24, or 48J/cm(2)) under constant irradiance (500 mw/cm(2)). Methods. DC and R(p)(max) were monitored for 10 min on the bottom surface of 2-mm thick disks and on 150-mu m thick films (representing the top of the specimen) using ATR-FTIR. PS was monitored for 10 min in 2-mm thick disks bonded to two glass rods (O = 5 mm) attached to a universal testing machine. One-way ANOVA/Tukey tests were used and differences in DC and R(p)(max) between top and bottom surfaces were examined using Student`s t-test. Statistical testing was performed at a pre-set alpha of 0.05. Results. For a given surface, DC showed differences among all groups, except at the top between 24 and 48 J/cm(2). R(p)(max) was similar among all groups at the same surface and statistically higher at the top surface. PS also showed significant differences among all groups. Data for 48 J/cm(2) were not obtained due to specimen failure at the glass/composite interface. Significance. Increases in irradiant exposure led to significant increases in DC and PS, but had no effect on R(p)(max) (c) 2008 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A series of novel macrocyclic tetraaza ligands that incorporate a naphthalene moiety as a photoactive chromophore have been prepared and structurally characterized as their Cu(II) complexes. Variable-temperature photophysical studies have concluded that the luminescence quenching evident in the Cu(H) complexes is due to intramolecular electronic energy transfer (EET). In their free-base forms, these ligands undergo reductive luminescence quenching via photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions, with proximate amine lone pairs acting as electron donors. Consequently, the emission behavior can be modulated by variations in pH and/or the presence of other Lewis acids such as Zn(H).

Culverts are among the most common hydraulic structures. Modern designs do not differ from ancient structures and are often characterised by significant afflux at design flows. A significant advance was the development of the Minimum Energy Loss (MEL) culverts in the late 1950s. The design technique allows a drastic reduction in upstream flooding associated with lower costs. The development and operational performances of this type of structure is presented. The successful operation of MEL culverts for more than 40 years is documented with first-hand records during and after floods. The experiences demonstrate the design soundness while highlighting the importance of the hydraulic expertise of the design engineers.

This paper proposes an alternative framework for examining the international macroeconomic impact of domestic monetary and fiscal policies and focuses on the distinction between national spending and national production and the reactive behavior of foreign investors to changing external account balances. It demonstrates that under a floating exchange rate regime, monetary and fiscal policies can affect aggregate expenditure and output quite differently, with important implications for the behavior of the exchange rate, the current account balance, and national income in the short run, as well as the economy's price level in the long run. In particular, this paper predicts that expansionary monetary and fiscal policies tend to depreciate the currency and only temporarily raise gross domestic product and the current account surplus, although permanently raise the domestic price level. This is a revised version of a paper presented at the Forty-Ninth International Atlantic Economic Conference, March 14–21, 2000, Munich, Germany.

Differentiated dendritic cells (DC) have been identified by the presence of nuclear RelB (nRelB) and HLA-DR, and the absence of CD20 or high levels of CD68, in lymph nodes and active rheumatoid arthritis synovial tissue. The current studies aimed to identify conditions in which nRelB is expressed in human tissues, by single and double immunohistochemistry of formalin-fixed peripheral and lymphoid tissue. Normal peripheral tissue did not contain nRelB(+) cells. nRelB(+) DC were located only in T- or B-cell areas of lymphoid tissue associated with normal organs or peripheral tissues, including tonsil, colon, spleen and thymus, or in association with T cells in inflamed peripheral tissue. Inflamed sites included skin delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction, and a wide range of tissues affected by autoimmune disease. Nuclear RelB(+) -HLA-DR- follicular DC were located in B-cell follicles in lymphoid organs and in lymphoid-like follicles of some tissues affected by autoimmune disease. Lymphoid tissue T-cell areas also contained nRelB(-) -HLA-DR+ cells, some of which expressed CD123 and/or CD68. Nuclear RelB(+) cells are found in normal lymphoid organs and in peripheral tissue in the context of inflammation, but not under normal resting conditions.

Efficient intramolecular electronic energy transfer (EET) has been demonstrated for three novel bichromophoric compounds utilizing a macrocyclic spacer as the bridge between the electronic energy donor and acceptor fragments. As their free base forms, emission from the electronically excited donor is absent and the acceptor emission is reductively quenched via photoinduced oxidation of proximate amine lone pairs. As their Zn(II) complexes, excitation of the donor results in sensitization of the electronic acceptor emission.
