The morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/high-density polyethylene (PP/HDPE) blends in a wide range of compositions modified by a sequential Ziegler-Natta polymerization product (PP-PE) have been investigated. PP-PE contains multiple components such as PP, ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPC), and high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE). The effects of PP-PE on the mechanical properties and morphology of the PP/HDPE blends are the aggregative results of all its individual components. Addition of PP-PE to the blends not only improved the tensile strength of the blends, but the elongation at break increased linearly while the moduli were nearly unchanged. Morphological studies show that the adhesion between the two phases in all the blends of different compositions is enhanced and the dispersed domain sizes of the blends are reduced monotonously with the increment of the content of PP-PE. PP-PE has been demonstrated to be a more effective compatibilizer than EPC. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the tensile strength of the blends depends most on the adhesion between the two phases and the elongation at break depends most on the domain size of the dispersed component. Aimed at raising the room temperature ionic conductivity of PEO-based solid polymer electrolyte and considered that the ionic conduction preferentially occurs in the amorphous phase, we lightly crosslinked the high MW PEO through gamma-irradiation and further suppressed the residual crystallinity by plasticizing with propylene carbonate. By incorporating LiClO4 salt to the above described polymer host, the ambient (25 degrees C) ionic conductivity of the electrolyte system could reach as high as 6.8 X 10(-4) S/cm. As the electrolyte was a crosslinked system, it was mechanically self-supportable. Based on the preliminary results of the electrochemical performance of the secondary lithium battery, assembled by using this kind of solid electrolyte and polyaniline as positive electrode, it is realized that the electrolyte thus prepared is of high expectancy.

In order to raise the room temperature ionic conductivity and improve the mechanical strength of a PEO-based polymer electrolyte, a non-crystalline two-component epoxy network was synthesized by curing diglycidyl ether of polyethylene glycol (DGEPEG) with triglycidyl ether of glycerol (TGEG) in the presence of LiClO4 salt, which acts in this system as both a ring opening catalyst and a source of ionic carrier. The structure of the precursors, the curing process and the cured films have been characterized by C-13 NMR, IR, DSC and ionic conductivity measurement techniques. The electrolyte system exhibits an ionic conductivity as high as similar to 10(-5) S/cm at 25 degrees C and is mechanically self-supportable. The dependence of ionic conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature, salt content, MW of PEG segment in DGEPEG and the proportion of DGEPEG in DGEPEG/TGEG ratio.

New comblike polymers(CP) have been synthesized by reacting monomethyl ether of polyethylene glycol(PEGME) with poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride)(MA) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. Butanone was selected as a solvent for the esterification reaction in order to obtain a completely soluble product. They were characterized by IR, C-13 NMR and elemental analysis.

Rare earth trifluoroacetates, Ln(CF3CO2)(3) (Ln = thirteen rare earth elements), combined with R(n)AlH(3-n) (R = methyl, octyl, n = 3; R = ethyl, i-Butyl, n = 2, 3) were used as catalysts for the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran (THF). The activity increased by adding propylene oxide (PO), as a promoter, to the polymerization system, producing high molecular weight polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF). The effects of Ln, PO/Ln, and Al/Ln, and others on the polymerization of THF were also studied. (C) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The correlation between mechanical relaxation and ionic conductivity was investigated in a two-component epoxy network-LiClO4 electrolyte system. The network was composed of diglycidyl ether of polyethylene glycol (DGEPEG) and triglycidyl ether of glycerol (TGEG). The effects of salt concentration, molecular weight of PEG in DGEPEG and the proportion of DGEPEG (1000) in DGEPEG/TGEG ratio on the ionic conductivity and the mechanical relaxation of the system were studied. It was found that, among the three influential factors, the former reinforces the network chains, reduces the free volume fraction and thus increases the relaxation time of the segmental motion, which in turn lowers the ionic conductivity of the specimen. Conversely, the latter two increase the free volume and thus the chain flexibility, showing an opposite effect. From the iso-free-volume plot of the shift factor log at and reduced ionic conductivity, it is noted that the plot can be used to examine the temperature dependence of segmental mobility and seems to be useful to judge whether the incorporated salt has been dissociated completely. Besides, the ionic conductivity and relaxation time at constant reference temperature are linearly correlated with each other in all the three cases. This result gives an additional experimental confirmation of the coordinated motion model of the ionic hopping with the moving polymer chain segment, which is generally used to explain the ionic conduction in non-glassy amorphous polymer electrolytes.

The viscosities of polystyrene-b-poly (ethylene/propylene) diblock copolymer in mixed solvent of n-octane and benzene were measured. The influences of the constitution of the mixed solvent, temperature and concentration were on the viscosity investigated. During the micellization the solution viscosity increases rapidly. The results are consistent with the study on the micellization by light scattering. The average mass of micelleswas measured and the hydrodynamic radius of gyrations were calculated.

This paper describes the roles of silica (SiO2), the butoxy ligand (-OBu) and ethyl benzoate (EB) on ethylene/1-butene copolymerization with MgCl2/SiO2-supported titanium catalysts. The distribution of SiO2 and of the elements Mg and Ti was observed by means of an energy-dispersed X-ray microanalyzer on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). An inversed Si/Mg ratio results, at invariant Ti/Mg ratio and -OBu content, in higher catalyst efficiency and higher comonomer incorporation, with a correspondingly decreased crystallinity of the copolymers. Thus, the inert carrier SiO2 favors copolymerizability, as seen from the values of the reactivity ratios. The copolymer compositional distribution is also affected by the SiO2 content, as seen from the DSC curves of the copolymers. As to the copolymer morphology, addition of SiO2 makes the copolymer particles larger and more uniform.

A wound-type cell with a polyaniline (PAn) positive electrode, a LiClO4-propylene carbonate (PC) electrolyte, and a lithium foil negative electrode has been constructed. The two electrodes are separated by a polypropylene separator. The PAn is deposited on carbon felt from a HClO4 solution containing aniline by galvanostatic or potentiostatic electrolysis. Using cyclic voltammetry charge/discharge cycles and charge/retention tests, the following results have been obtained: (i) reversibility of the charge/discharge reaction of the PAn electrode is very good; (ii) more than 50 charge/discharge cycles at 80% charge/discharge efficiency and 260 W h kg-1 discharge energy density can be achieved at 50 mA between 2 and 4 V; (iii) the open-circuit voltage and the capacity retention of the battery after storage at open-circuit for 60 days are 3.4 V and 33%, respectively.

Polyoxypropylene glycol (PPG) (or castor oil) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) were mixed, and the prepolymer polyurethane (PU) (I) was formed. Vinyl-terminated polyurethane (II) was prepared from (I), and hydroxyethyl acrylate, AB crosslinked polymers (ABCPs) were synthesized from (II) and vinyl monomers such as styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, etc. The dynamic mechanical properties and morphology of ABCPs were measured. The ABCPs based on PPG have double glass transition temperatures (T(g)) on the sigma-vs. temperature curves. They display a two-phase morphology with plastic components forming the continous phase and PU-rich domains forming the separated phase on the electron micrographs. Irregular shapes and a highly polydisperse distribution of PU-rich domain sizes were observed. The crosslink density of ABCPs has a notable effect on the morphology and properties. The average diameter of the PU-rich domains depends on the molecular weight of prepolymer PPG. The highly crosslinked structures will produce large numbers of very small domains. ABCPs based on castor oil show a single T(g) relaxation on the dynamic mechanical spectra. The compatibility between the two components is much better in ABCPs based on castor oil than in those based on PPG, because there is a high crosslink density in the former. Comparison of the dynamic mechanical spectra of ABCP and interpenetrating networks (IPN) based on castor oil with similar crosslink density and composition imply that the two components in ABCP are compatible whereas microphase separation occurs in IPN. An improvement in the compatibility is achieved by the crosslinking between the two networks.
