This paper is on an onshore variable speed wind turbine with doubly fed induction generator and under supervisory control. The control architecture is equipped with an event-based supervisor for the supervision level and fuzzy proportional integral or discrete adaptive linear quadratic as proposed controllers for the execution level. The supervisory control assesses the operational state of the variable speed wind turbine and sends the state to the execution level. Controllers operation are in the full load region to extract energy at full power from the wind while ensuring safety conditions required to inject the energy into the electric grid. A comparison between the simulations of the proposed controllers with the inclusion of the supervisory control on the variable speed wind turbine benchmark model is presented to assess advantages of these controls. In this paper we exploit the nonlinear property of the SiC multilayer devices to design an optical processor for error detection that enables reliable delivery of spectral data of four-wave mixing over unreliable communication channels. The SiC optical processor is realized by using double pin/pin a-SiC:H photodetector with front and back biased optical gating elements. Visible pulsed signals are transmitted together at different bit sequences. The combined optical signal is analyzed. Data show that the background acts as selector that picks one or more states by splitting portions of the input multi optical signals across the front and back photodiodes. Boolean operations such as EXOR and three bit addition are demonstrated optically, showing that when one or all of the inputs are present, the system will behave as an XOR gate representing the SUM. When two or three inputs are on, the system acts as AND gate indicating the present of the CARRY bit. Additional parity logic operations are performed using four incoming pulsed communication channels that are transmitted and checked for errors together. As a simple example of this approach, we describe an all-optical processor for error detection and then provide an experimental demonstration of this idea. (C) 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The SiC optical processor for error detection and correction is realized by using double pin/pin a-SiC:H photodetector with front and back biased optical gating elements. Data shows that the background act as selector that pick one or more states by splitting portions of the input multi optical signals across the front and back photodiodes. Boolean operations such as exclusive OR (EXOR) and three bit addition are demonstrated optically with a combination of such switching devices, showing that when one or all of the inputs are present the output will be amplified, the system will behave as an XOR gate representing the SUM. When two or three inputs are on, the system acts as AND gate indicating the present of the CARRY bit. Additional parity logic operations are performed by use of the four incoming pulsed communication channels that are transmitted and checked for errors together. As a simple example of this approach, we describe an all optical processor for error detection and correction and then, provide an experimental demonstration of this fault tolerant reversible system, in emerging nanotechnology.

This paper describes the use of a Control Banding Tool to assess and further control of exposure of nanoparticles emitted during welding operations. The tool was applied to Metal Active Gas (MAG) arc welding of mild and stainless steel, providing semi-quantitative data on the process, so that protection measures could be derived, e.g. exhaust gas ventilation by hoods, local ventilation devices and containment measures. This tool is quite useful to compare and evaluate the characteristics of arc welding procedures so that more eco-friendly processes could be preferred over the more potentially noxious ones.

This work describes the utilization of Pulsed Electric Fields to control the protozoan contamination of a microalgae culture, in an industrial 2.7m3 microalgae photobioreactor. The contaminated culture was treated with Pulsed Electric Fields, PEF, for 6h with an average of 900V/cm, 65μs pulses of 50Hz. Working with recirculation, all the culture was uniformly exposed to the PEF throughout the assay. The development of the microalgae and protozoan populations was followed and the results showed that PEF is effective on the selective elimination of protozoa from microalgae cultures, inflicting on the protozoa growth halt, death or cell rupture, without affecting microalgae productivity. Specifically, the results show a reduction of the active protozoan population of 87% after 6h treatment and 100% after few days of normal cultivation regime. At the same time, microalgae growth rate remained unaffected. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Applications of niclosamide at three-monthly intervals were undertaken for 14 years in foci of Biomphalaria glabrata in the water sources of Peri-Peri (Capim Branco, MG). All the residents of the area were submitted to an annual fecal examination (Kato/Katz) and those individuals eliminating Schistosoma mansoni eggs were treated with oxamniquine. A malacological survey was undertaken at three-monthly intervals by means of ten scoops with a perforated ladle each ten metres along the two banks of the ditches and streams of the region. Where snails were found, molluscicide was applied by means of dripping or aspersion using a 3 ppm aqueous suspension of niclosamide. Initially, a mean of 14.3% of snails in the region were found to be eliminating cercariae. Following the first four applications of molluscicide, this was reduced to 0.0% and maintained at about 1.5% throughout the program. Thus, there was a continued possibility of schistosomiasis transmission in the area and it was observed that the population of snails reestablished itself within three months of molluscicide application. The results obtained in this study do not encourage the continual use of niclosamide as the only method of control of schistosomiasis.

A schistosomiasis control program was implemented between 1974/87 in Peri-Peri,. MG (622 inhabitants). Molluscicide (niclosamide) was applied at three monthly intervals in water sources with Biomphalaria glabrata, and individuals eliminating Schistosoma mansoni eggs in the feces were treated annually with oxamniquine. From 1974 to 1983 the control measures were undertaken by staff of the "René Rachou" Research Center FIOCRUZ (CPqRR), and from 1984 to 1987 these measures were included in the Capim Branco basic health network activities. During both periods, the prevalence, incidence, intensity of infection and hepatosplenic form as well as the number of infected snails decreased significantly. The prevalence decreased from 43.5 to 4.4%, the incidence from 19.0 to 2.9%, the overall intensity of S. mansoni from 281 to 87 and of the hepatosplenic form from 5.9 to 0.0%. The results obtained suggest that the municipal management of control measures was as effective as the vertical program conducted by CPqRR staff.

The development of an intelligent wheelchair (IW) platform that may be easily adapted to any commercial electric powered wheelchair and aid any person with special mobility needs is the main objective of this project. To be able to achieve this main objective, three distinct control methods were implemented in the IW: manual, shared and automatic. Several algorithms were developed for each of these control methods. This paper presents three of the most significant of those algorithms with emphasis on the shared control method. Experiments were performed by users suffering from cerebral palsy, using a realistic simulator, in order to validate the approach. The experiments revealed the importance of using shared (aided) controls for users with severe disabilities. The patients still felt having complete control over the wheelchair movement when using a shared control at a 50% level and thus this control type was very well accepted. Thus it may be used in intelligent wheelchairs since it is able to correct the direction in case of involuntary movements of the user but still gives him a sense of complete control over the IW movement.

Several popular Ansatze of lepton mass matrices that contain texture zeros are confronted with current neutrino observational data. We perform a systematic chi(2) analysis in a wide class of schemes, considering arbitrary Hermitian charged-lepton mass matrices and symmetric mass matrices for Majorana neutrinos or Hermitian mass matrices for Dirac neutrinos. Our study reveals that several patterns are still consistent with all the observations at the 68.27% confidence level, while some others are disfavored or excluded by the experimental data. The well-known Frampton-Glashow-Marfatia two-zero textures, hybrid textures, and parallel structures (among others) are considered.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive value of genetic polymorphisms in the context of BCG immunotherapy outcome and create a predictive profile that may allow discriminating the risk of recurrence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a dataset of 204 patients treated with BCG, we evaluate 42 genetic polymorphisms in 38 genes involved in the BCG mechanism of action, using Sequenom MassARRAY technology. Stepwise multivariate Cox Regression was used for data mining. RESULTS: In agreement with previous studies we observed that gender, age, tumor multiplicity and treatment scheme were associated with BCG failure. Using stepwise multivariate Cox Regression analysis we propose the first predictive profile of BCG immunotherapy outcome and a risk score based on polymorphisms in immune system molecules (SNPs in TNFA-1031T/C (rs1799964), IL2RA rs2104286 T/C, IL17A-197G/A (rs2275913), IL17RA-809A/G (rs4819554), IL18R1 rs3771171 T/C, ICAM1 K469E (rs5498), FASL-844T/C (rs763110) and TRAILR1-397T/G (rs79037040) in association with clinicopathological variables. This risk score allows the categorization of patients into risk groups: patients within the Low Risk group have a 90% chance of successful treatment, whereas patients in the High Risk group present 75% chance of recurrence after BCG treatment. CONCLUSION: We have established the first predictive score of BCG immunotherapy outcome combining clinicopathological characteristics and a panel of genetic polymorphisms. Further studies using an independent cohort are warranted. Moreover, the inclusion of other biomarkers may help to improve the proposed model.

ABSTRACT: Firstly some brief remarks are made based on the scientific, historical and cultural panorama of the human vision with regard to three approaches: the eye (the human eye in its specific filogenetic place, fundamental anatomofunctional element of the visual system in interaction with the brain), the eyes (essential twin units of the face with their consensual and conjugated binocular activity), the gaze (psychologicaly overloaded, a means to express oneself and to influence the observer, a guide to other persons' behaviour, consolidated in works of art and in people's traditional superstitious believes and ways of thinking). A report is made on a cross-sectional descriptive study whose goal is to contribute to the knowledge of the level of visual health of children in the Lisbon Region and to identify factors which determine it. Between October 2005 and August 2006 649 children under 10 years were observed at the pediatric ophthalmologic consultation in the SAMS (Serviços de Assistência Médico-Social do Sindicato dos Bancários do Sul e Ilhas). Data were collected concerning more than 250 primary variables covering most itens of the usual ophthalmological examination. Special attention was paid to children's age since it plays a crucial role in main stages of visual system development. In the case of children age 6 to 7 SAMS and school results are often put side by side. On account of the great number of numerical data it was often necessary to look at the degree of statistical significancy of differencies between subgroups. Some of the study's results (mostly SAMS): Children age 6 to 7 - 71,1% (SAMS) and 91,5% (Schools) had not an ophthalmologic examination before 4 years old. Total frequency of myopic disorders 9,4%, of hypermetropic disorders 25,3%, both showing great differences between age groups; convergent strabismus 3,9%; amblyopia 2,6% (13/491 children over 3 years old), more frequent among little girls, in those with 1st examination after 4 years old and in those whose parents didn´t complied to the therapy ordered for the child. Specific objectives dealt with visual acuity and ocular refraction. The comparison of automatic refractometry without and with cycloplegy showed that visual acuity testing is often not enough for a correct diagnosis. Eye disorders in the family history proved to be a very important information. Analysis of corresponding data disclosed a lot of relationships among others: 12 pag1.qxp 27-11-2001 18:28 Page 12 Índice Geral 13 Children with a family history of myopic disorders have more frequently a diagnosis of myopic disorders and a negative refraction, a higher rate of quantitative diagnosis/refraction matching concerning myopic disorders. Those children have in general inverse characteristics regarding hypermetropic disorders. Children with a family history of hypermetropic disorders have more frequently a diagnosis of hypermetropic disorders. Children with a family history of strabismus have more frequently a diagnosis of manifest convergent strabismus and all forms of esodeviations. Children with a family history of astigmatism have more frequently a diagnosis of astigmatism. Ophthalmologic profiles are drawn allowing to take into account in a synoptic way a set of visual health parameters. Data on parents' compliance with therapy ordered for the child, and attitudes regarding child's glass wearing, as well as data on child's behaviour in the classroom and learning difficulties were as a rule too few to allow conclusions but still need more studies in the future. Orthoptists and nurses performed in the same study period a screening of visual acuity <0,8 and of ocular motility disorders addressed to children of 1srt degree of public schools (term 2005/2006) in the town of Lisbon. 520 of such children were screened. 101 of them were examined by the author in her medical office; some were refered, the others taken as a control. Regarding visual acuity the predictive value of a negative test was 91% but the predictive value of a positive test was only 67% (33% of false positive results, consequently a too high rate of overreferal). Performed by orthoptists screening quality was inferior in comparison with screening done by nurses. On the whole this screening had not the required quality. A survey on physicians' and nurses' knowledge, attitudes and practices related to pediatric ophthalmologic care was carried out in health centers. Results are discussed, conclusions drawn. Some suggestions are made aiming at a better children's visual health.
