Vernacular meaning making : Examples of narrative impact in fiction film questioning the 'banal' notion in mediatization of religion theory

The outcome of an audience study supports theories stating that stories are a primary means by which we make sense of our experiences over time. Empirical examples of narrative impact are presented in which specific fiction film scenes condense spectators' lives, identities and beliefs. One conclusion is that spectators test the emotional realism of the narative for greater significance, connecting diegetic fiction experiences with their extra-diegetic world in their quest for meaning, self and identity. The 'banal' notion of the mediatization of religion theory is questioned as unsatisfactory in the theoretical context of individualized meaning-making processes. As a semantically negatively charged concept, it is problematic when analyzing empirical examples of spectators' use of fictional narratives, especially when trying to characterize the idiosyncratic and complex interplay between spectators' fiction emotions and their testing of mediated narratives in an exercise to find moral significance in extra-filmic life. Instead vernacular meaning-making is proposed.

Managerial leadership for research use in nursing and allied health care professions : a narrative synthesis protocol

BACKGROUND: Nurses and allied health care professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, dietitians) form more than half of the clinical health care workforce and play a central role in health service delivery. There is a potential to improve the quality of health care if these professionals routinely use research evidence to guide their clinical practice. However, the use of research evidence remains unpredictable and inconsistent. Leadership is consistently described in implementation research as critical to enhancing research use by health care professionals. However, this important literature has not yet been synthesized and there is a lack of clarity on what constitutes effective leadership for research use, or what kinds of intervention effectively develop leadership for the purpose of enabling and enhancing research use in clinical practice. We propose to synthesize the evidence on leadership behaviours amongst front line and senior managers that are associated with research evidence by nurses and allied health care professionals, and then determine the effectiveness of interventions that promote these behaviours.Methods/design: Using an integrated knowledge translation approach that supports a partnership between researchers and knowledge users throughout the research process, we will follow principles of knowledge synthesis using a systematic method to synthesize different types of evidence involving: searching the literature, study selection, data extraction and quality assessment, and analysis. A narrative synthesis will be conducted to explore relationships within and across studies and meta-analysis will be performed if sufficient homogeneity exists across studies employing experimental randomized control trial designs. DISCUSSION: With the engagement of knowledge users in leadership and practice, we will synthesize the research from a broad range of disciplines to understand the key elements of leadership that supports and enables research use by health care practitioners, and how to develop leadership for the purpose of enhancing research use in clinical practice.

Literary love making in Nicholas Sparks novels: Finding the balance between the writer’s life and the writer’s work in bestselling Romantic Literature

For almost a decade now Nicholas Sparks has been writing love stories. Not only has he been publishing his stories, but they have received high acclaim in each of their installments. Several of his novels have been made into major motion pictures and increased his popularity quite significantly. His status as a successful romantic fiction writer is undeniable, but the question is, why? What is it about Nicholas Sparks that makes his novels so engaging, and personally, what do I need to do as an aspiring novelist to try and acquire the same literary status? Sparks’s novels reach readers at a number of different levels, thus giving them appeal no matter the intellectual intent of the reader. Theoretically, Sparks engages reader response techniques as well as formalist processes such as “habitualization” and “defamiliarization,” while also developing engaging plot lines that represent many of the experiences from his own life. His writing is not only academically redeemable, but it is also creatively stimulating; between the two, Sparks represents the thunder and lightning combination all writers strive for while trying to achieve literary success. This project also offers a creative element in which I attempt to exemplify many of the traits discussed in the analytical sections of this document, by recreating them in a creative, fictitious fashion. Themes such as: motion versus stasis, life versus death, and the ordinary versus the extraordinary all exist within the narrative structure of my short story “Trip to Fall.” Besides these thematic elements, the creative section strives to represent the balance Sparks achieves between the experiences of his own life and the fictitious world he creates. Overall, this project delves into the life of Nicholas Sparks to better understand the inspiration for his writing at the level of form as well as content, while also paying tribute to Sparks’s style through a representation of his work in my own words.

Música popular nas rádios do ABC: memória musical e cultura regional nos anos 1950 e 1960

Aliança entre os estudos midiáticos e os relacionados à memória podem oferecer novas perspectivas para o entendimento da cultura e de suas relações com os meios de comunicação, seja em âmbito local ou em dimensões mais amplas. Tendo em vista as atuais relações entre memória social e comunicação, este artigo pretende analisar a produção musical popular na região do Grande ABC paulista sob o ponto de vista da memória de alguns de seus personagens, colocando em destaque o papel de quatro emissoras de rádio locais como mediadoras culturais entre gêneros musicais mais tradicionais e a sociedade local. Discutese a produção local de canções de gêneros tradicionais, como o samba-canção, o bolero, a valsa e a canção sertaneja, a partir da análise dos relatos de histórias de vida de músicos e compositores que viveram o período na região e, também, da análise de suas canções, a fim de pensar como as transformações culturais locais mantêm ou modificam essa produção musical local e identificam o papel do rádio na difusão desses gêneros musicais na região nessa época.

A jovem guarda no ABC paulista: música popular, mídia e memória

Por muito tempo, a memória dominante acerca da relação entre cidade de São Paulo e região do Grande ABC (pertencente à região metropolitana paulista) produziu sentidos de que o subúrbio não era o lugar da criação artística ou cultural, em especial a midiática. Contrários a esse ponto de vista, questionamos: quais são as possibilidades efetivas de criação e recriação dos movimentos culturais apresentados pela indústria cultural nessa região? Como é possível dimensionar a movimentação da Jovem Guarda numa área considerada periferia da capital paulista? Partindo disso, pretende-se nesse artigo mapear o movimento da Jovem Guarda no ABC nos anos 1960, com base em entrevistas de história oral com músicos e compositores da localidade, com vistas a demonstrar sua dinâmica e suas características numa região específi ca.

Instrumentos de participação popular na tutela ambiental

O presente trabalho busca demonstrar as possibilidades de participação do cidadão na tutela ambiental, de modo que foram elencadas os principais instrumentos com tal finalidade,até mesmo aqueles cuja titularidade não pertence ao cidadão,individualmente.Inicialmente abordou-se os fundamentos históricos do direito ambiental, bem como a natureza jurídica do direito ao meio ambiente equilibrado e os princípios dos quais parte tal ramo do direito.Tratou-se, ainda, do conceito de meio ambiente, que comporta abordagens de diferentes disciplinas, e jamais pode ser considerado único, encerrado e absoluto, uma vez que a tutela ambiental deve ser prestada de forma mais ampla possível.O destaque ao princípio democrático embasa o posterior desenvolvimento do estudo, voltado para seu aspecto pragmático, qual seja os instrumentos de tutela ambiental.A menção a tais institutos busca informar ao leitor a possibilidade, o momento e a forma de utilização.Por ser o direito ambiental disciplina recente e em construção, não é possível demostrar a plena eficácia dos instrumentos, mais já é possível delinear sua concretude e crescimento, ainda que tímidos.

Camada popular emergente: um novo contexto para a comunicação publicitária de instituições de ensino superior

Os cenários político, econômico e social vividos pelo Brasil nas últimas décadas trouxeram novos contextos para a comunicação, sendo o fenômeno da camada popular emergente um deles. Tal contingente revelou-se fundamental para a expansão das instituições de ensino superior (IES), o que demandou uso de estratégias de comunicação de marketing focadas nesse público. O objetivo é analisar a comunicação publicitária envolvida na relação das IES para com a camada popular emergente por uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa e exploratória, referencial teórico e estudo documental por meio da análise de conteúdo de anúncios publicitários veiculados no jornal Metrô News, tipificado para a camada popular emergente. Os resultados apontam que a camada popular emergente oferece novos insumos para as decisões estratégicas das IES e para sua comunicação publicitária.
