A method is proposed for determining the optimal placement and controller design for multiple distributed actuators to reduce the vibrations of flexible structures. In particular, application of piezoceramic patches to a horizontally-slewing single-link flexible manipulator modeled using the assumed modes method is investigated. The optimization method uses simulated annealing and allows placement of any number of distributed actuators of unequal length, although piezoceramics of fixed equal lengths are used in the example. It also designs an linear-quadratic-regulator controller as part of the optimization procedure. The measures of performance used in the investigation to determine optimality are the total mass of the system and the time integral of the absolute value of the hub and tip position error. This study also varies the relative weightings for each of these performance measures to observe the effects on the controller designs and piezoceramic patch positions in the optimized solutions.

The interaction between the growth of flexible forms of employment and employer funded training is important for understanding labour market performance. In particular, the idea of a trade-off has been advanced to describe potential market failures in the employment of flexible workers. This study finds that evidence of a trade-off is apparent in both the incidence and intensity of employer funded training. Flexible workers receive training that is 50-80% less intense than the workforce average. Casual workers - especially males - suffer more acutely from the trade-off. This suggests that flexible production externalities may seriously reduce human capital formation in the workforce.

A flexible structure with surface-bonded piezoceramic patches is modelled using Timoshenko beam theory. Exact mode shapes and natural frequencies associated with the flexural motion are computed for various piezoceramic distributed actuator arrangements. The effects of patch placement and of shear on the modal characteristics are demonstrated using a cantilevered beam as an example. Perfect bonding of the piezoceramic to the beam substructure is assumed, and for the purposes of this paper only passive piezoceramic properties are considered. The modelling technique and results obtained in a closed form are intended to assist investigations into the modelling and control of active structures with surface-bonded piezoceramic actuators. Background: CO2 monitoring is recommended for thoracic telescopic procedures and for spontaneous breathing general anesthesia in children. During flexible bronchoscopy (FB) in children, the various currently available methods of CO2 measurements are limited. The CO2 falls and increases have been reported in FB but it is unknown whether airway lesions predispose to CO2 change. The aim of this study was to describe and validate endoscopic intratracheal CO2 measurements in children undergoing FB under spontaneously breathing GA. Methods: Endtidal CO2 (PECO2) measurements at the start (Start-CO2) and end (End-CO2) of FB on 100 consecutive children were performed using a newly designed endoscopic intratracheal method. To validate the method blood gas sampling was simultaneously performed in 28 children and results analyzed using the Bland and Altman method, intraclass correlation and 95% range for repeatability. Results: End-CO2 and CO2-change (End-CO2 minus Start-CO2) were significantly different in children with airway lesions (CO2 change: no lesion = 3 mmHg, extrathoracic airway lesion = 4.5, intrathoracic airway lesion = 8, P = 0.038). There was no significant difference in Start-CO2 values among the groups. CO2-change in those aged > 12 months was similar to those >12 months. Intratracheal CO2 measurements were comparable with arterial blood values in the Bland and Altman plots. The intraclass correlation was 0.69 and 95% range for repeatability was 3.7-4.17 mmHg. Conclusions: Midtracheal PECO2 provides a useful estimate of PaCO2 for monitoring the respiratory status of children undergoing FB. The presence of airway lesions rather than age is associated with significant increased PCO2 rise.

Background: Flexible video bronchoscopes, in particular the Olympus BF Type 3C160, are commonly used in pediatric respiratory medicine. There is no data on the magnification and distortion effects of these bronchoscopes yet important clinical decisions are made from the images. The aim of this study was to systematically describe the magnification and distortion of flexible bronchoscope images taken at various distances from the object. Methods: Using images of known objects and processing these by digital video and computer programs both magnification and distortion scales were derived. Results: Magnification changes as a linear function between 100 mm ( x 1) and 10 mm ( x 9.55) and then as an exponential function between 10 mm and 3 mm ( x 40) from the object. Magnification depends on the axis of orientation of the object to the optic axis or geometrical axis of the bronchoscope. Magnification also varies across the field of view with the central magnification being 39% greater than at the periphery of the field of view at 15 mm from the object. However, in the paediatric situation the diameter of the orifices is usually less than 10 mm and thus this limits the exposure to these peripheral limits of magnification reduction. Intraclass correlations for measurements and repeatability studies between instruments are very high, r = 0.96. Distortion occurs as both barrel and geometric types but both types are heterogeneous across the field of view. Distortion of geometric type ranges up to 30% at 3 mm from the object but may be as low as 5% depending on the position of the object in relation to the optic axis. Conclusion: We conclude that the optimal working distance range is between 40 and 10 mm from the object. However the clinician should be cognisant of both variations in magnification and distortion in clinical judgements.

In response to recent technological advances and the trend toward flexible learning in education, the authors examined the factors affecting student satisfaction with flexible online learning. The authors identified 2 key student attributes of student satisfaction: (a) positive perceptions of technology in terms of ease of access and use of online flexible learning material and (b) autonomous and innovative learning styles. The authors derived measures of perceptions of technology from research on the Technology Acceptance Model and used locus of control and innovative attitude as indicators of an autonomous and innovative learning mode. First-year students undertaking an introductory management course completed surveys at the beginning (n = 248) and at the end (n = 256) of course work. The authors analyzed the data by using structural equation modeling. Results suggest that student satisfaction is influenced by positive perceptions toward technology and an autonomous learning mode.

A new approach to enantiomerically pure 2,8-dialkyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecanes and 2,7-dialkyl-1,6-dioxaspiro [4.5] decanes is described and utilizes enantiomerically pure homopropargylic alcohols obtained from lithium acetylide opening of enantiomerically pure epoxides, which are, in turn, acquired by hydrolytic kinetic resolution of the corresponding racemic epoxides. Alkyne carboxylation and conversion to the Weinreb amide may be followed by triple-bond manipulation prior to reaction with a second alkynyllithium derived from a homo- or propargylic alcohol. In this way, the two ring components of the spiroacetal are individually constructed, with deprotection and cyclization affording the spiroacetal. The procedure is illustrated by acquisition of (2S,5R,7S) and (2R,5R,7S)-2-n-butyl-7-methyl-1,6-dioxaspiro[4.5]-decanes (1), (2S,6R,8S)-2-methyl-8-n-pentyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane (2), and (2S,6R,8S)-2-methyl-8-n-propyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane (3). The widely distributed insect component, (2S,6R,8S)-2,8-dimethyl-1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane (4), was acquired by linking two identical alkyne precursors via ethyl formate. In addition, [H-2(4)]-regioisomers, 10,10,11,11-[H-2(4)] and 4,4,5,5-[H-2(4)] of 3 and 4,4,5,5-[H-2(4)]-4, were acquired by triple-bond deuteration, using deuterium gas and Wilkinson's catalyst. This alkyne-based approach is, in principle, applicable to more complex spiroacetal systems not only by use of more elaborate alkynes but also by triple-bond functionalization during the general sequence.

In this paper, we investigate the suitability of the grand canonical Monte Carlo in the description of adsorption equilibria of flexible n-alkane (butane, pentane and hexane) on graphitized thermal carbon black. Potential model of n-alkane of Martin and Siepmann (J. Phys. Chem. 102 (1998) 2569) is employed in the simulation, and we consider the flexibility of molecule in the simulation. By this we study two models, one is the fully flexible molecular model in which n-alkane is subject to bending and torsion, while the other is the rigid molecular model in which all carbon atoms reside on the same plane. It is found that (i) the adsorption isotherm results of these two models are close to each other, suggesting that n-alkane model behaves mostly as rigid molecules with respect to adsorption although the isotherm for longer chain n-hexane is better described by the flexible molecular model (ii) the isotherms agree very well with the experimental data at least up to two layers on the surface.

In this paper we investigate the difference between the adsorption of spherical molecule argon (at 87.3 K) and the flexible normal butane (at an equivalent temperature of 150 K) in carbon slit pores. These temperatures are equivalent in the sense that they have the same relative distances between their respective triple points and critical points. Higher equivalent temperatures are also studied (122.67 K for argon and 303 K for n-butane) to investigate the effects of temperature on the 2D-transition in adsorbed density. The Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation is used to study the adsorption of these two model adsorbates. Beside the longer computation times involved in the computation of n-butane adsorption, n-butane exhibits many interesting behaviors such as: (i) the onset of adsorption occurs sooner (in terms of relative pressure), (ii) the hysteresis for 2D- and 3D-transitions is larger, (iii) liquid-solid transition is not possible, (iv) 2D-transition occurs for n-butane at 150 K while it does not happen for argon except for pores that accommodate two layers of molecules, (v) the maximum pore density is about four times less than that of argon and (vi) the sieving pore width is slightly larger than that for argon. Finally another feature obtained from the Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation is the configurational arrangement of molecules in pores. For spherical argon, the arrangement is rather well structured, while for n-butane the arrangement depends very much on the pore size. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
