The crystallization behavior and morphology of the crystalline-crystalline poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymer (PEO-b-PCL) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and hot-stage polarized optical microscope (POM). The mutual effects between the PEO and PCL blocks were significant, leading to the obvious composition dependence of the crystallization behavior and morphology of PEO-b-PCL. In this study, the PEO block length was fixed (M-n = 5000) and the weight ratio of PCL/PEO was tailored by changing the PCL block length. Both blocks could crystallize in PEO-b-PCL with the PCL weight fraction (WFPCL) of 0.23-0.87. For the sample with the WFPCL of 0.36 or less, the PEO block crystallized first, resulting in the obvious confinement of the PCL block and vice versa for the sample with WFPCL of 0.43 or more. With increasing WFPCL, the crystallinity of PEO reduced continuously while the variation of the PCL crystallinity exhibited a maximum. The long period of PEO-b-PCL increased with increasing WFPCL from 0.16 to 0.50 but then decreased with the further increase of WFPCL due to the interaction of the respective variation of the thicknesses of the PEO and PCL crystalline lamellae.

In the present work a nonmonotonic dependence of standard rate constant (k(0)) on reorganization energy (lambda) was discovered qualitatively from electron transfer (Marcus-Hush-Levich) theory for heterogeneous electron transfer processes on electrode surface. It was found that the nonmonotonic dependence of k(0) on lambda is another result, besides the disappearance of the famous Marcus inverted region, coming from the continuum of electronic states in electrode: with the increase of lambda, the states for both Process I and Process II ET processes all vary from nonadiabatic to adiabatic state continuously, and the lambda dependence of k(0) for Process I is monotonic thoroughly, while for Process II on electrode surface the lambda dependence of k(0) could show a nonmonotonicity.

The chain-length dependence of the Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter is introduced into the FH lattice theory for polydisperse polymer-blend systems. The spinodals are calculated for the model polymer blends with different chain lengths and distributions. It is found that all the related variables r(n), r(w), r(z), and chain-length distribution, have effects on the spinodals for polydisperse polymer blends.

The dependence of the performance of organic light-emitting devices(OLEDs) on the sheet resistance of indium-tin-oxide(ITO) anodes was investigated by measuring the steady state current density brightness voltage characteristics and the electroluminescent spectra. The device with a higher sheet resistance anode shows a lower current density, a lower brightness level, and a higher operation voltage. The electroluminescence(EL) efficiencies of the devices with the same structure but different ITO anodes show more complicated differences. Furthermore, the shift of the light-emitting zone toward the anode was found when an anode with a higher sheet resistance was used. These performance differences are discussed and attributed to the reduction of hole injection and the increase in voltage drop over ITO anode with the increase in sheet resistance.

The cloud-point temperatures (T-cl's) of both binary poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-poly(ethylene oxide-b-dimethylsiloxane) [P(EO-b-DMS)] and ternary[toluene/PEO/P(EO-b-DMS)] systems were determined by light scattering measurements at atmospheric pressure. The phase separation behavior upon cooling in the ternary system has been investigated at atmospheric pressure and under high pressure and compared to the phase behavior in the binary system. The phase transition temperatures have been obtained for all of the samples. As a result, the pressure induces compatibility in the binary mixtures, but for the ternary system, pressure not only can induce mixing but also can induce phase separation.

The crystal field splitting of 5d level of EU2+ and Ce3+ in halide crystals has been studied. Our results indicate that the 10Dq splitting can be directly related to the homopolar part of average energy gap, the coordination number of central (doped) ion, the charge of neighboring anions and bond ionicity between central ion to nearest anions. A relation between the 10Dq splitting and the above mentioned factors is presented. Our calculated results are in reasonable agreement with diverse experiments.

More than 22 000 folding kinetic simulations were performed to study the temperature dependence of the distribution of first passage time (FPT) for the folding of an all-atom Go-like model of the second beta-hairpin fragment of protein G. We find that the mean FPT (MFPT) for folding has a U (or V)-shaped dependence on the temperature with a minimum at a characteristic optimal folding temperature T-opt*. The optimal folding temperature T-opt* is located between the thermodynamic folding transition temperature and the solidification temperature based on the Lindemann criterion for the solid. Both the T-opt* and the MFPT decrease when the energy bias gap against nonnative contacts increases. The high-order moments are nearly constant when the temperature is higher than T-opt* and start to diverge when the temperature is lower than T-opt*. The distribution of FPT is close to a log-normal-like distribution at T* greater than or equal to T-opt*. At even lower temperatures, the distribution starts to develop long power-law-like tails, indicating the non-self-averaging intermittent behavior of the folding dynamics. It is demonstrated that the distribution of FPT can also be calculated reliably from the derivative of the fraction not folded (or fraction folded), a measurable quantity by routine ensemble-averaged experimental techniques at dilute protein concentrations.

Nylon 10 10 crystals, which isothermally crystallized from the molten state and cold crystallized from melt-quenched samples at various temperatures, were investigated by using temperature-variable wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). No Brill transition occurred for the melt-crystallized crystals. However, this transition was easily observed for the cold-crystallized nylon 10 10, and the transition temperature is pertinent to the crystallization temperature. The sizes of these crystals was determined by SAYS and correlated with the Brill transition temperatures (T-B). It was found that the T-B had a linear relationship with the size of crystals, which was used to predict the T-B for those crystals with thick lamella and to calculate the crystal size showing T-B below room temperature. Nylon 10 10 crystal will possess the gamma form (pseudohexagonal form) rather than the a phase at room temperature if its size becomes small enough.

The electrical conductivity of polyaniline doped with camphor sulfonic acid (PAn-CSA) was studied. The results indicate that there is a critical temperature (T-c) and the temperature dependence of PAn-CSA conductivity shows metallic and semiconductor characteristics above and below T-c, respectively. The higher the molecular weight of PAn, the lower the T-c. The conductivity was enhanced remarkably when PAn-CSA film was stretched, its room temperature conductivity is up to 750 S/cm when elogonation is 60%; however, T-c was independent of elongation.
Dependence of superconducting temperature on chemical bond parameters in YBa2Cu3O6+delta (delta=0-1)
Resumo:
The chemical bond parameters, that is ionicities and average energy gaps, for all types of chemical bonds in YBa2Cu3O6+delta have been investigated with variation of oxygen content delta (delta = 0.0, 0.35, 0.45, 0.58, 0.64, 0.73, 0.78, 0.81, 0.95, 1.00). The theory used is the complex crystal chemical bond theory, which is the development of P-V-L theory. The two plateaus near 90 K and 60 K in superconducting transition temperatures, and the disappearance of superconductivity with the change of oxygen content, were reasonably explained by chemical bond parameters. The results also showed that the Cu-O chains play a vital role in the transition from non-superconductors to superconductors, and the highest transition temperature occurred when the plane-chain reached a coupling state. Covalent radii of the bonding elements have strong effects on the linear electro-optic coefficients of zinc blende crystals; these effects can be quantitatively determined by investigating the relation between the difference in the atomic sizes rho and the magnitude of the linear electro-optic tensor coefficient r(41). It is interesting to note that for the same cation Zn2+, Ga3+, or In3+ the magnitude of r(41) increases with increased covalent radius of the bonded anion r(beta). Especially with the increasing tendency of the parameter rho, the magnitude of r(41) of crystals that have a same cation will increase suddenly when the value of r(beta) becomes larger. The decaying of free radicals in the course of heating, trapped in irradiated polyamide 1010 with different crystallinities, were investigated using an ESR technique. The decaying temperature, at which all radicals decay completely, depends on the aggregation of polyamide 1010 prior to radiation. The higher the crystallinity, the higher the temperature at which the radicals disappear. Dynamically speaking, radicals in specimens with higher crystallinity take longer to decay. The diffusion rates of ferrocene have been estimated in five kinds of poly(ethylene glycol) solution, containing the electrolyte LiClO4, by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry. The D-app of ferrocene increases with increasing temperature, and the dependency of D-app on temperature obeys the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. The D-app of ferrocene decreases with increasing polymer chain length. Both the chain length and temperature dependence conform to a simple free volume model. A relation between current and polymer chain length is suggested at room and high temperatures.

The change in the microphase separation transition (MST) temperature of a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer induced by the addition of polystyrene (PS) was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering. It was found that the transition temperature was determined from the molecular weight (M(H)) Of the added PS in relation to that of the corresponding blocks (M(A)) in the copolymer. The MST temperature decreased with added PS if M(H)/M(A) < 1/4, while it increased with added PS when M(H)/M(A) > 1/4 Analysis of the theoretical expression based on the random phase approximation showed exactly the same tendency of change in the transition temperatures as that observed experimentally. The interaction parameter, chi(SB), obtained by nonlinear fitting of the scattering profiles of SBS/PS blends in the disordered state, was found to be a function of temperature and composition. Composition fluctuations were found to exist in SBS/PS blends, increasing with increasing addition of PS but diminishing with increasing molecular weight of the added PS.

This article describes a quantitative study of the diffusion rate of ferrocene(Fc) dissolved in ploy(ethylene glycol)(PEG) medium containing MClO(4)(M = Li+, Na+, Bu(4)N(+), Hx(4)N(+)). The apparent diffusion coefficient D-app and the active concentration c(a) of Fc were simultaneously measured by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry. The D-app and c(a) of Fc have been estimated in PEG containing different concentrations and sizes of supporting electrolyte, and the dependence of D-app on ferrocene concentrations has been observed. The values of D-app decrease with increasing concentrations of Fc, increasing concentrations of LiClO4 or the ratio (O:Li) and also with 4 decreasing cation radius of the electrolyte. The temperature dependencies conform to a simple free volume model. The concentration and size of the counterion dependencies of the diffusion rate are similar to the behavior of their dependencies of ionic conductivity in polyelectrolyte.
