The structure, thermal stability, morphology and ion conductivity of titanium perovskites with the general formula Li3xLn2/3−xTiO3 (Ln = rare earth element; 3x= 0.30) are studied in the context of their possible use as solid electrolyte materials for lithium ion batteries. Materials are prepared by a glycine-nitrate method using different sintering treatments, with a cation-disorder-induced structural transition from tetragonal to cubic symmetry, detected as quenching temperature increases. SEM images show that the average grain size increases with increasing sintering temperature and time. Slightly higher bulk conductivity values have been observed for quenched samples sintered at high temperature. Bulk conductivity decreases with the lanthanide ion size. A slight conductivity enhancement, always limited by grain boundaries, is observed for longer sintering times. TDX measurements of the electrolyte/cathode mixtures also show a good stability of the electrolytes in the temperature range of 30-1100ºC.

This thesis work deals with a mathematical description of flow in polymeric pipe and in a specific peristaltic pump. This study involves fluid-structure interaction analysis in presence of complex-turbulent flows treated in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. The flow simulations are performed in COMSOL 4.4, as 2D axial symmetric model, and ABAQUS 6.14.1, as 3D model with symmetric boundary conditions. In COMSOL, the fluid and structure problems are coupled by monolithic algorithm, while ABAQUS code links ABAQUS CFD and ABAQUS Standard solvers with single block-iterative partitioned algorithm. For the turbulent features of the flow, the fluid model in both codes is described by RNG k-ϵ. The structural model is described, on the basis of the pipe material, by Elastic models or Hyperelastic Neo-Hookean models with Rayleigh damping properties. In order to describe the pulsatile fluid flow after the pumping process, the available data are often defective for the fluid problem. Engineering measurements are normally able to provide average pressure or velocity at a cross-section. This problem has been analyzed by McDonald's and Womersley's work for average pressure at fixed cross section by Fourier analysis since '50, while nowadays sophisticated techniques including Finite Elements and Finite Volumes exist to study the flow. Finally, we set up peristaltic pipe simulations in ABAQUS code, by using the same model previously tested for the fl uid and the structure.

The direct use of natural gas makes the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) potentially more competitive with the current energy conversions technologies. The Intermediate Temperature SOFC (IT-SOFC) offer several advantages over the High Temperature SOFC (HT-SOFC), which includes better thermal compatibility among components, fast start with lower energy consumption, manufacture and operation cost reduction. The CeO2 based materials are alternatives to the Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) to application in SOFC, as they have higher ionic conductivity and less ohmic losses comparing to YSZ, and they can operate at lower temperatures (500-800°C). Ceria has been doped with a variety of cations, although, the Gd3+ has the ionic radius closest to the ideal one to form solid solution. These electrolytes based in ceria require special electrodes with a higher performance and chemical and termomechanical compatibility. In this work compounds of gadolinia-doped ceria, Ce1-xGdxO2-δ (x = 0,1; 0,2 and 0,3), used as electrolytes, were synthesized by polymeric precursors method, Pechini, as well as the composite material NiO - Ce0,9Gd0,1O1,95, used as anode, also attained by oxide mixture method, mixturing the powders of the both phases calcinated already. The materials were characterized by X ray diffraction, dilatometry and scanning electronic microscopy. The refinement of the diffraction data indicated that all the Ce1-xGdxO2-δ powders were crystallized in a unique cubic phase with fluorite structure, and the composite synthesized by Pechini method produced smaller crystallite size in comparison with the same material attained by oxide mixture method. All the produced powders had nanometric characteristics. The composite produced by Pechini method has microstructural characteristics that can increase the triple phase boundaries (TPB) in the anode, improving the cell efficiency, as well as reducing the mass transport mechanism effect that provokes anode degradation

Portland-polymers composites are promising candidates to be used as cementing material in Northeastern oil wells of Brazil containing heavy oils submitted to steam injection. In this way, it is necessary to evaluate its degradation in the commonly acidizind agents. In addition, to identify how aggressive are the different hostile environments it is an important contribution on the decision of the acidic systems to be used in. It was investigated the performance of the Portland-polymer composites using powdered polyurethane, aqueous polyurethane, rubber tire residues and a biopolymer, those were reinforced with polished carbon steel SAE 1045 to make the electrochemical measurements. HCl 15,0 %, HCl 6,0 % + HF 1,5 % (soft mud acid), HCl 12,0 % + HF 3,0 % (regular mud acid) and HAc 10 % + HF 1,5 % were used as degrading environment and electrolytes. The more aggressive acid solution to the plain Portland hardened cement paste was the regular mud acid, that showed loss of weight around 23.0 %, followed by the soft mud acid, the showed 11.0 %, 15.0 % HCl with 7,0 % and, at last the 10.0 % HAc plus HF 1.5 % with just 1.0 %. The powdered polyurethane-composite and the aqueous polyurethane one showed larger durability, with reduction around 87.0 % on the loss of weight in regular mud acid. The acid attack is superficial and it occurs as an action layer, where the degraded layer is responsible for the decrease on the kinetic of the degrading process. This behavior can be seen mainly on the Portland- aqueous polyurethane composite, because the degraded layer is impregnated with chemically modified polymer. The fact of the acid attack does not have influence on the compressive strength or fratography of the samples, in a general way, confirms that theory. The mechanism of the efficiency of the Portland-polymers composites subjected to acid attack is due to decreased porosity and permeability related with the plain Portland paste, minor quantity of Ca+2, element preferentially leached to the acidic solution, wave effect and to substitute part of the degrading bulk for the polymeric one. The electrolyte HAc 10 % + HF 1,5 % was the least aggressive one to the external corrosion of the casing, showing open circuit potentials around +250 mV compared to -130 mV to the simulated pore solution to the first 24 hours immersion. This behavior has been performed for two months at least. Similar corrosion rates were showed between both of the electrolytes, around 0.01 μA.cm-2. Total impedance values, insipient arcs and big polarization resistance capacitive arcs on the Nyquist plots, indicating passivity process, confirm its efficiency. In this way, Portlandpolymers composites are possible solutions to be succeed applied to oilwell cementing concomitant submitted to steam injection and acidizing operation and the HAc 10,0 % + HF 1,5 % is the less aggressive solution to the external corrosion of the casing

Swelling properties of four commercial anion-exchange membranes with different structure have been analyzed in several hydro-organic media. With this target, the liquid uptake and the surface expansion of the membranes in contact with different pure liquids, water and alcohols (methanol, ethanol and 1-propanol), and with water alcohol mixtures with different concentrations have been experimentally determined in presence and in absence of an alkaline medium (LiOH, NaOH and KOH of different concentrations). The alkali-metal doping effect on the membrane water uptake has also been investigated, analyzing the influence of the hydroxide concentration and the presence of an alcohol in the doping solution. The results show that the membrane structure plays an essential role in the influence that alcohol nature and alkaline media has on the selective properties of the membrane. The heterogeneous membranes, with lower density, show higher liquid uptakes and dimensional changes than the homogeneous membranes, regardless of the doping conditions. Purpose: To improve the effectiveness and reduce the systemic side effects of methylprednisolone in traumatic spinal injuries, its polymeric implants were prepared using chitosan and sodium alginate as the biocompatible polymers. Methods: Implants of methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS) were prepared by molding the drug-loaded polymeric mass obtained after ionotropic gelation method. The prepared implants were evaluated for drug loading, in vitro drug release and in vivo performance in traumatic spinal-injury rat model with paraplegia. Results: All the implant formulations were light pale solid matrix with smooth texture. Implants showed 86.56 ± 2.07 % drug loading. Drug release was 89.29 ± 1.25 % at the end of 7 days. Motor function was evaluated in traumatic spinal injury-induced rats in terms of its movement on the horizontal bar. At the end of 7 days, the test group showed the activity score (4.75 ± 0.02) slightly higher than that of standard (4.62 ± 0.25), but the difference was not statistically different (p > 0.05). Conclusion: MPSS-loaded implants produces good recovery in traumatic spinal-injury rats.

Sodium-based batteries are being considered to replace Li-based batteries for the fabrication of large-scale energy storage devices. One of the main obstacles is the lack of safe and conductive solid Na-ion electrolytes. A Na-ion polymer based on the (4-styrenesulfonyl(trifluromethylsulfonyl) imide anion, Na[STFSI], has been prepared by a radical polymerization process and its conductive properties determined. In addition, a number of multi-component polymers were synthetized by co-reaction of two monomers: Na[STFSI] and ethyl acrylate (EA) at different ratios. The structural and phase characterizations of the polymers were probed by various techniques (DSC, TGA, NMR, GPC, Raman, FTIR and Impedance spectroscopy). Comparative studies with blends of the homopolymers Na[PSTFSI] and poly(ethylacrylate) (PEA) have also been performed. The polymers are all thermally stable up to 300°C and the ionic conductivity of EA copolymers and EA blends are about 1-3 orders of magnitude higher than that of Na[PSTFSI]. The highest conductivity measured at 100°C was found for Na[PSTFSI-blend-5EA] at 7.9 × 10-9 S cm-1, despite being well below its Tg. Vibrational spectroscopy indicates interaction between Na+ and the EA carbonyl groups, with a concomitant decrease in the sulfonyl interaction, facilitating Na+ motion, as well as lowering Tg.

High-energy density Zinc-air batteries are currently of interest since they could play a key role in emerging large-scale energy storage applications. However, achieving good rechargeability of such metal-air batteries requires significant further research and development effort. Room Temperature Ionic liquids (RTILs) offer a number of ideal thermal and physical properties as potential electrolytes for large-scale energy storage applications and thus, can help increase the practicality of such electrochemical devices. This paper reports the synthesis and application of three novel quaternary alkoxy ammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide based RTILs, with two or more ether functional groups designed to interact and solubilize zinc ions, in order to aid in the electrochemical reversibility of the metal. The anion is successfully reduced from, and re-oxidized into, the three alkoxy ammonium RTILs suggesting that they are potential candidates as electrolytes for use in zinc-air batteries. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that the presence of water reduces the activation barrier required to deposit zinc and assists stable charge/discharge cycling in an electrolyte consisting of 0.1 M Zn(NTf2)2 in the tri-alkoxy ammonium chain RTIL, [N2(20201)(20201)(20201)] [NTf2], with 2.5 wt.% H2O. Further experiments demonstrate that with such electrolyte a Zn electrode can complete at least 750 cycles at a current density of 0.1 mA/cm2 at room temperature.
