In living bodies, the correct perceptual representation of size constancy requires that an object's size appear the same when it changes its location with respect to the observer. At the same time, it is necessary that objects at different locations appear to be the same size if they are. In order to do that, the perceptual system must recover from the stimuli impinging on the individual, from the light falling on the retina, a representation of the relative sizes of objects in the environment. Moreover, at the same time, image perception is related to another type of phenomena. It corresponds to the well known perceptual illusions. To analyze this facts, we propose a system based on a particular arrays of receptive points composed by optical fibers and dummy fibers. The structure is based on the first layers of the mammalians primary visual cortex. At that part of the brain, the neurons located at certain columns, respond to particular directions. This orientation changes in a systematic way as one moves across the cortical surface. In our case, the signals from the above-mentioned array are analyzed and information concerning orientation and size of a particular line is obtained. With this system, the Muelle-Lyer illusion has been studied and some rules to interpret why equal length objects give rise to different interpretations are presented.

Magnetic excitation of whistlers by a square array of electrodynamic tethers is discussed. The array is made of perpendicular rows of tethers that carry equal, uniform, and time-modulated currents at equal frequency with a 90° phase shift. The array would fly vertical in the orbital equatorial plane, which is perpendicular to the geomagnetic field B0 when its tilt is ignored. The array radiates a whistler wave along B0. A parametric instability due to pumping by the background magnetic field through the radiated wave gives rise to two unstable coupled whistler perturbations. The growth rate is maximum for perturbations with wave vector at angles 38.36° and 75.93° from B0. For an experiment involving a wavefront that moves with the orbiting array, which might serve to study nonlinear wave interactions and turbulence in space plasmas, characteristic values of growth rate and parameters, such as the number of tethers and their dimensions and distances in the array, are discussed for low Earth orbit ambient conditions.

This paper shows the Gini Coefficient of the Spanish bunkering, for the Spanish Port System 1960 to the year 2010 with the aim to describe the Spanish bunkering in these periods and propose future strategies. The stage of bunkering must change due to new regulations of marine fuels but to predict the future you must know the past On December 17 came into force on community standard marine fuels. After a complicated negotiation with the industry moves forward a project that is fully compliant with the guidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and limiting the sulphur and particulate matter of marine fuels used by ships calling or transit through maritime space of the European Union. The impact of a possible extension at European level of the Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECA) as they are introduced in the Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution From Ships, 1973 as modified by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL) adopted by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

An electrodynamic tether can propel a spacecraft through a planetary magnetized plasma without using propellant. In the classical embodiment of an electrodynamic tether, the ambient magnetic fleld exerts a Lorentz force on the current along the tether, the ambient plasma providing circuit closure for the current A suggested propulsion scheme would hypothetically eliminate tether performance dependence on the plasma density by using a full wire loop to close the current circuit, and a superconductor to shield a loop segment from the external uniform magnetic fleld and cancel the Lorentz force on that segment. Here, we use basic electromagnetic laws to explain how such a scheme cannot produce a net force. Because there is no net current in the superconducting shield, the circulation of the magnetic field along a closed line outside the full cross section, in its plane, is just due to the current flowing in the loop segment. The presence of the superconducting shield simply moves the Lorentz force from the shielded loop segment to the shield itself and, as a result, the total magnetic force, acting on full loop plus shield, remains zero.

We have analyzed the spectral sub-bandgap photoresponse of silicon (Si) samples implanted with vanadium (V) at different doses and subsequently processed by pulsed-laser melting. Samples with V concentration clearly above the insulator-metal transition limit show an important increase of the photoresponse with respect to a Si reference sample. Their photoresponse extends into the far infrared region and presents a sharp photoconductivity edge that moves towards lower photon energies as the temperature decreases. The increase of the value of the photoresponse is contrary to the classic understanding of recombination centers action and supports the predictions of the insulator-metal transition theory.

One of the most important design constraints of a climbing robot is its own weight. When links or legs are used as a locomotion system they tend to be composed of special lightweight materials, or four-bars-linkage mechanisms are designed to reduce the weight with small rigidity looses. In these cases, flexibility appears and undesirable effects, such as dynamics vibrations, must be avoided at least when the robot moves at low speeds. The knowledge of the real tip position requires the computation of its compliance or stiffness matrix and the external forces applied to the structure. Gravitational forces can be estimated, but external tip forces need to be measured. This paper proposes a strain gauge system which achieves the following tasks: (i) measurement of the external tip forces, and (ii) estimation of the real tip position (including flexibility effects). The main advantages of the proposed system are: (a) the use of external force sensors is avoided, and (b) a substantial reduction of the robot weight is achieved in comparison with other external force measurement systems. The proposed method is applied to a real symmetric climbing robot and experimental results are presented.

Writing an efficient abstract is always a difficult and significant work in academic writing. What kinds of abstracts are well reputed in sport science? To answer this question, 20 abstracts from top journals of sport science were analyzed in the current research. The number of words and rhetorical moves were studied to assess the structures of the abstracts. Meanwhile, the key clauses, citations, the use of first person pronoun, the adoption of abbreviations and acronyms, hedging and the main tense were included in the analysis of the writing skills. Results have show: (1) Almost all of the abstracts were non-structured, and the length varied a lot, but the average word count was about 210-220; (2) the use of writing skills, such as key clauses, citations and hedging differed depending on the preference of the journal where the abstract appeared, and the main tense was selected based on the context of the abstract. In most cases, abbreviations and acronyms were allowed to be used, while the first person pronoun was always avoided

---ABSTRACT---Nowadays, the economic instability is a fact, so in this project we have studied and analysed the status of financial institutions. This study is limited to the national environment, due to the idiosyncrasy of the banks. In order to understand the environment in which national banks moved, firstly it has been analysed the financial status of the most relevant countries internationally, to study later the economic status of Spain, especially in the banking sector. The aim is to establish a framework in which the sector moves, to have at the end all the necessary information to understand, not only the issues that are affecting to this entities, but also to realize that a change is necessary for their progress and develop. Once detailed the environment in which the banks have to move, it is detailed the main reasons that have lead them to lose credibility with customers, and with international agencies responsible for ensuring the correct execution of banking operations. These operations must be done under established regulations. It has been mentioned some significant examples of mistakes that have had a social impact. It has not been detailed each outrageous, the objective is to show that this kind of actions not only hurt the institution itself, but also affect the entire national financial sector. Into the reasons that have led banks to the actual situation, it can be seen that keeping the same method of working is not sustainable in the long term; therefore, a change of strategy is proposed, more specifically a change in the model of organizational culture. The reference model has been one used by other companies, mainly eastern companies, due to its innovation and its capability to be aligned with the changing needs and requirements of customers nowadays. The evolution of technology has been a disruptive change in the way of doing business: something to be taken by the bank, not only to compete but also to survive. The strategic model change must start with the compromise of CEO’s, and later must be spread to the rest of the organization. It is a major change, so its full implementation will take years, so, it is basic to carry out continuous reviews. Finally, the advantages that the bank will get with this change are discussed. These advantages include recovery of customer confidence, through modernization (something needed anyway), to be enriched by an increase in economic benefits, the engine of the banks.

ABSTRACT The subject of study of this thesis are the urban proposals developed by Andrea Branzi over the last fifty years, with a special focus on the more developed and comprehensive ones: the No- Stop City (1970-1971), produced as a member of the architettura radicale group Archizoom, and two of his “weak urbanization models”: Agronica (1995) and the Master Plan for Philips Strijp in Eindhoven (2000). This area of his work has kept, over time, a remarkably consistent proposal for the dissolution of architecture that can be described with the motto città senza architettura (city without architecture), coined by himself. A determination, already latent in the very diverse production of Archizoom prior to No-Stop City, that crystallizes and becomes explicit in this project which was aimed to "liberate man from the architecture." Despite the continuity of this idea over time, Branzi’s city without architecture has clearly evolved leading to different types of dissolution. A dissolution that, obviously, does not mean the effective demise of the discipline, but rather, the formulation of an architecture autre based on a radical rethinking of its nature and role. This agenda against the discipline has been developed through a number of issues that undermine the canonical architectural object (its expressive emptying, the loss of importance of the envelope and the finished shape, the anticompositional character, the independence between form and function, the mutability over time...), but goes beyond it by putting into crisis the role that architecture itself has had in the material, political and symbolic configuration of the human habitat. A loss of prominence and centrality in contemporary society that, in the architect’s discourse, implies a subordinate role. From this dissolution process, a new type of city arises: a city where urban form has been lost or has become superfluous, in which functional zoning has dissolved, whose interiors are in a permanent process of reprogramming that ignores typologies, that transcends the division between urban and agricultural and becomes, above all, a space of flows and services. Ultimately, the crisis of the traditional city implies a change in the very nature of the urban that moves from being regarded as a physical and built place, to become an immaterial and virtually omnipresent condition that unfolds regardless of its physical medium. Many of the ideas Branzi has developed on, and from, the different "scales" of professional activity (design, architecture and urbanism) converge in his urban research. These proposals not only question the relations between objects, buildings, cities and territories but also these very categories. Cities without architecture that are based, ultimately, on raising simple questions that are, on the other hand, eternal: What is a building? What is a city?
ABSTRACT The main objective of this thesis is to characterize the morphology and the state of strains and stresses of Hurd Glacier (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands archipelago, Antarctica) through a combination of field observations, ground-penetrating radar measurements and numerical simulations. The morphology and the current state of strain and stresses are the expression of the dynamic evolution of the glacier from the past to recent times, and their analysis gives us the guidelines to be able to predict, with the support of numerical simulations, its future evolution. The first subject addressed is the study of structures that can be observed on the glacier surface. We describe the different techniques used (field measurements, photointerpretation of orthophotos, geochemical analysis of volcanic ashes, etc.) and we present the analysis and interpretation of the morpho-structural results, as well as the correlation with geochemical analysis (XRF) between the volcanic ashes extruded to the surface of Hurd Glacier and those of Deception Island volcano, from which the ashes originate. This allows us dating the ashes as Tephra 1, corresponding to the 1970 eruption, Tephra 2, corresponding to the pre-1829 eruptions, and the Tephra 3 group, associated with older eruptions. Secondly we focus on the study of the structures present within the glacier, which are detected with the help of ground-penetrating radar. Once identified, we link these internal structures with those observed on the glacier surface. We also study the hydrothermal structure of the glacier, getting a series of additional evidences of its polythermal structure. Among the evidences available so far, we can mention those based on the value of the stiffness parameter of the constitutive relation of ice, determined by fitting dynamic models to observations, as done by Otero (2008), and those based on the velocity of propagation of the radar waves through the glacier ice, measured using the common midpoint method, as done by Navarro et al. (2009). The additional evidences that we provide in this thesis are: 1) the presence of structures typical of compressive regime in the terminal zone of the glacier, together with shear at its margins, and 2) the presence of a surface layer of cold ice (overlying a layer of temperate ice) in the ablation zone of the three lobes of Hurd Glacier –Sally Rocks, Argentina and Las Palmas–, reaching thicknesses of 70, 50 and 40 m, respectively. This cold layer is probably frozen to the subglacial bed in the terminal zone (Molina and others 2007; this thesis). Finally, we deal with the numerical simulation of glacier dynamics. We present the physical-mathematical model, discuss its boundary conditions and how they are measured in the field work, and describe the method of numerical solution of the model’s partial differential equations. We present the results for the velocity, strain and stress fields, comparing these results with the observed structures. We also include an analysis of the ellipses of cumulative deformation, which provide information about the structures that can result from the evolution of the strain and stress regime of the glacier ice as it moves slowly from the head to the snout of the glacier, with transit times of up to 1,250 years, so picking the history of deformation of the glacier. Summarizing, we show in this thesis that field measurements of structures and ash layers, ground-penetrating radar measurements and numerical simulations of glacier dynamics, performed in combination, allow us to characterize the current regime of velocities, strains and stresses of the glacier, to understand its past evolution and to predict its future evolution.

A host of studies over the years have been published on introductions to research articles across a variety of fields. However, much less attention has been paid to professional or workplace introductions as well as student written introductions. This study aims to redress this imbalance by studying the writing samples of four primary English teacher trainees’ introductions to curricular design i.e. the document candidates must present to an examination board in Spain. This genre can be considered occluded in that exemplars are private and confidential and not readily available to the aspiring candidate. Three recurrent moves were identified, namely, explaining the importance of curricular design, providing background and defining concepts. Instances of self-glorification (Bhatia 1996) were revealed. The implications of the findings can have a positive effect on students’ future writing.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this project is the implementation of a system able to analyze body movement from cinematic data. This cinematic data was obtained with a previous program. The first step is carrying out a study about the techniques and knowledge existing nowadays related to people movement. It is known that Rudolf Laban was one the greatest exponents of this field and thanks to his observations a relation between personality, mood and the way the person moves was made. Laban coined the term effort, that refers to the way energy generated from a movement is managed and how it is modulated in the sequence, this is a method of describing the inner intention of the person. The effort is divided into 4 categories: weight, space, time and flow, and each of these categories have 2 polarities named elements of effort. These 8 elements typify a movement. We look for movements that are made of these elements so we can quantify them. The movements are recorded with the kinect camera and saved in a csv file. In order to process this data a neural network is chosen owe to its flexibility and capability of processing non-linear inputs. For its implementation it is required a wide study regarding: topology, activation functions, different types of learning methods and training algorithms among others. The neural network for this project will have 2 hidden layers, it will be static and follow a feedforward process ruled by backpropagation. In a static net the inputs must be fixed, this means they cannot vary in time, so we will have to implement an intermediate program to calculate the average of our data. A second test for our net will be checking its ability to recognize more than one effort element in just one movement. In order to do this all the movements are recorded again but this time in pairs, the rest of the process remains the same.

ABSTRACT This research is focused on the study of the audiovisual dimension of architecture, as an in¬tersensorial approach to space apprehension and design. It is posed the necessity to develop new methodologies and tools that keep this complexity, as a contribution to the development of a project, by means of putting into evidence the sophistication of the relationship between man and media The research moves us to the conviction that the quick and relevant changes that confer a distinc-tion to these contemporary times all over the social, economic and political environments, involve, unavoidably, new ways of knowledge and experimentation on space, and therefore, new trends of research. The growing valuation of subjective and sensorial aspects all over the fields of the knowledge and the development of the technologies that have changed completely our interpersonal and environmental relationships, the new tools for analysis, recording, conservation and manipulation of data and, last but not least, the setting to democratic and global availability of the whole knowledge through Inter¬net, impose another approach to the making, conception and experience of architecture. This research deals with a critical analysis of the state–of- the-art of the matter, modelling new webs of relationship among disciplines that allow to outline the audiovisual dimension as a new focus of research on architecture, putting evidence into practice as it is necessary to develop any analysis in a transversal and interdisciplinary way. It is paid a special attention to the evolution of sound objects and their qualitative approach to ar¬chitecture, showing how sound, with its capacity to transmit time and dynamic aspects of things (movement, the presence of the body), it is not simply another sensorial channel in the apprehension of space, since its interaction with the visual thing generates an undetachable association of space and time, an specific one of every moment and place. Starting from this position a methodological revision has been made leading to use a walk as a tool for analysis that allows to study the relationship among the space, the action and the audio-visual perception, by means of crossing data corresponding to the morphology of space, with the data of a perceptive experience from the perspective of an individual observer and with those of the collective uses of the space, as video has been finally used as a tool, not only as a representation of the real thing, but also as a tool for analysis that allows to take isolated data (audio recordings, video, obser¬vations), to be studied, classified, and put into their appropriate place, and finally, to restore them by means of a multimedia set up. A first experimentation in situ has been carried out, being useful to explore a method of appli¬cation, outlining new questions and beginning with new ways of analysis for further research.

Performance of heave plates used in offshore structures is strongly influenced by their added mass and damping, which are affected by proximity to a boundary. A previous paper by the authors presented numerical simulations of the flow around a circular solid disk oscillating at varying elevations from seabed [1]. The force calculated was used to evaluate the added mass and damping coefficients for the disk. The simulations suggest that as the structure moves closer to the seabed the added mass and damping coefficients (Ca and Cb) increases continuously. In order to understand the physics behind the added mass and damping trends, when a heave plate is moving near a seabed or closer to the free surface, the flow characteristics around the heave plate are examined numerically in this paper. Flow around oscillating disks is dominated by generation and development of phase-dependent vortical structures, characterized by the KC number and the distance from the seabed or free surface to the heave plate. Numerical calculations presented in this paper have comprised the qualitative analysis of the vortex shedding and the investigation of the links between such vortex shedding and, on one hand the damping coefficient, and on the other hand, pairing mechanisms such as the shedding angle.

Synthetic Aperture Radar’s (SAR) are systems designed in the early 50’s that are capable of obtaining images of the ground using electromagnetic signals. Thus, its activity is not interrupted by adverse meteorological conditions or during the night, as it occurs in optical systems. The name of the system comes from the creation of a synthetic aperture, larger than the real one, by moving the platform that carries the radar (typically a plane or a satellite). It provides the same resolution as a static radar equipped with a larger antenna. As it moves, the radar keeps emitting pulses every 1/PRF seconds —the PRF is the pulse repetition frequency—, whose echoes are stored and processed to obtain the image of the ground. To carry out this process, the algorithm needs to make the assumption that the targets in the illuminated scene are not moving. If that is the case, the algorithm is able to extract a focused image from the signal. However, if the targets are moving, they get unfocused and/or shifted from their position in the final image. There are applications in which it is especially useful to have information about moving targets (military, rescue tasks,studyoftheflowsofwater,surveillanceofmaritimeroutes...).Thisfeatureiscalled Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI). That is why the study and the development of techniques capable of detecting these targets and placing them correctly in the scene is convenient. In this document, some of the principal GMTI algorithms used in SAR systems are detailed. A simulator has been created to test the features of each implemented algorithm on a general situation with moving targets. Finally Monte Carlo tests have been performed, allowing us to extract conclusions and statistics of each algorithm.
