In the present work, the evolution of microstructure during solidification of A356 alloy under stirring is performed experimentally in a high temperature concentric viscometer. The stirring during solidification results a semisolid slurry in the annular space between the cylinders. This slurry is removed periodically during processing using a vacuum removal quartz tube and quenched in water for micrograph analysis. From the micrograph analysis, the shape, stacking arrangement and corresponding microstructural evolution of the suspended primary particles in the slurry are studied. The work also predicts the fraction of solid present in the extracted slurry. Finally, the effect of microstructure and the solid-fraction on the slurry viscosity is presented.

A new coupled approach is presented for modeling the hydrogen bubble evolution and engulfment during an aluminum alloy solidification process in a micro-scale domain. An explicit enthalpy scheme is used to model the solidification process which is coupled with a level-set method for tracking the hydrogen bubble evolution. The volume averaging techniques are used to model mass, momentum, energy and species conservation equations in the chosen micro-scale domain. The interaction between the solid, liquid and gas interfaces in the system have been studied. Using an order-of-magnitude study on growth rates of bubble and solid interfaces, a criterion is developed to predict bubble elongation which can occur during the engulfment phase. Using this model, we provide further evidence in support of a conceptual thought experiment reported in literature, with regard to estimation of final pore shape as a function of typical casting cooling rates. The results from the proposed model are qualitatively compared with in situ experimental observations reported in literature. The ability of the model to predict growth and movement of a hydrogen bubble and its subsequent engulfment by a solidifying front has been demonstrated for varying average cooling rates encountered in typical sand, permanent mold, and various casting processes. This paper attempts a quantitative understanding of the effect of length scale on two phase eutectic structure. We first develop a model that considers both the elastic and plastic properties of the interface. Using Al-Al2Cu lamellar eutectic as model system, the parameters of the model were experimentally determined using indentation technique. The model is further validated using the results of bulk compression testing of the eutectics having different length scales. High strain rate deformation behavior of Cu-10Zn alloy was studied. A weak texture with fine grain size was observed at high strain rate. The weak texture has been attributed to activity of higher number of slip systems under dynamic loading conditions. Twinning has minimal role on texture. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Preferential oxidation of CO (CO-PROX) was carried out over Ni supported on CeO2 prepared by the co-precipitation method. The influence of metal loadings (2.5, 5 and 10 wt.% Ni) and the reaction conditions such as reaction temperature and feed composition on CO oxidation and oxidation selectivity were evaluated by using dry reformate gas. No other reactions like CO or CO2 methanation, coking, reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction is observed in the temperature range of 100-200 A degrees C on these catalysts. Hydrogen oxidation dominates over CO oxidation above the temperature of 200 A degrees C. An increase in oxygen leads to an increase in CO conversion but a simultaneous decrease in the O-2 selectivity. It has been noticed that 5 and 10 % Ni/CeO2 show better catalytic activity towards CO-PROX reaction. These catalysts were characterized by S-BET, XRD, TEM, XPS and H-2-TPR.

A new solid state synthetic route has been developed toward metal and bimetallic alloy nanoparticles from metal salts employing amine-boranes, as the reducing agent. During the reduction, amine-borane plays a dual role: acts as a reducing agent and reduces the metal salts to their elemental form and simultaneously generates a stabilizing agent in situ which controls the growth of the particles and stabilizes them in the nanosize regime. Employing different amine-boranes with differing reducing ability (ammonia borane (AB), dimethylamine borane (DMAB), and triethylamine borane (TMAB)) was found to have a profound effect on the particle size and the size distribution. Usage of AB as the reducing agent provided the smallest possible size with best size distribution. Employment of TMAB also afforded similar results; however, when DMAB was used as the reducing agent it resulted in larger sized nanoparticles that are polydisperse too. In the AB mediated reduction, BNHx polymer generated in situ acts as a capping agent whereas, the complexing amine of the other amine-boranes (DMAB and TMAB) play the same role. Employing the solid state route described herein, monometallic Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ir and bimetallic CuAg and CuAu alloy nanoparticles of <10 nm were successfully prepared. Nucleation and growth processes that control the size and the size distribution of the resulting nanoparticles have been elucidated in these systems.

We report on the novel flow sensing application of piezoelectric ZnO thin film deposited on Phynox alloy sensing element. Characterization of piezoelectric ZnO films deposited on Phynox (Elgiloy) substrate at different RF powers is discussed. ZnO films deposited at RF power of 100W were found to have fine c-axis orientation, possesses excellent surface morphology with lower rms surface roughness of 1.87 nm and maximum d(31) coefficient value 4.7 pm V-1. The thin cantilever strip of Phynox alloy with ZnO film as a sensing layer for flow sensing has been tested for flow rates ranging from 2 to 18 L min(-1). A detailed theoretical analysis of the experimental set-up showing the relationship between output voltage and force at a particular flow rate has been discussed. The sensitivity of now sensing element is similar to 18 mV/(L min(-1)) and typical response time is of the order of 20 m s. The sensing element is calibrated using in-house developed testing set-up. Present trend of semi-solid processing is directed towards rheocasting route which allows manufacturing of near-net-shape cast components directly from the prepared semi-solid slurry. Generation of globular equi-axed grains during solidification of rheocast components, compared to the columnar dendritic structure of conventional casting routes, facilitates the manufacturing of components with improved mechanical properties and structural integrity. In the present investigation, a cooling slope has been designed and indigenously fabricated to produce semi solid slurry of Al-Si-Mg (A356) alloy and successively cast in a metallic mould. The scope of the present work discusses about development of a numerical model to simulate the liquid metal flow through cooling slope using Eulerian two-phase flow approach and to investigate the effect of pouring temperature on cooling slope semi-solid slurry generation process. The two phases considered in the present model are liquid metal and air. Solid fraction evolution of the solidifying melt is tracked at different locations of the cooling slope, following Schiel's equation. The continuity equation, momentum equation and energy equation are solved considering thin wall boundary condition approach. During solidification of the liquid metal, a modified temperature recovery scheme has been employed taking care of the latent heat release and change of fraction of liquid. The results obtained from simulations are compared with experimental findings and good agreement has been found.

Hot deformation behavior of a hypoeutectic Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy in (alpha + beta) phase field is investigated in the present study with special reference to flow response, kinetics and microstructural evolution. For a comparison, the base alloy Ti-6Al-4V was also studied under identical conditions. Dynamic recovery of alpha phase occurs at low temperatures while softening due to globularization and/or dynamic recrystallization dominates at high temperatures irrespective of boron addition. Microstructural features for both the alloys display bending and kinking of alpha lamellae for near alpha test temperatures. Unlike Ti-6Al-4V, no sign of instability formation was observed in Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B for any deformation condition except for cavitation around TiB particles, due to deformation incompatibility and strain accumulation at the particle-matrix interface. The absence of macroscopic instabilities and early initiation of softening mechanisms as a result of boron addition has been attributed to microstructural features (e.g. refined prior beta grain and alpha colony size, absence of grain boundary alpha layer, presence of TiB particles at prior beta boundaries, etc.) of the respective alloys prior to deformation. In submitted research; nanocrystalline powders having elements Ni0.5Cu0.25Zn0.25Fe2 xInxO4 with varied amounts of indium ( x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were grown-up by modified citrate to nitrate alchemy. The realism of single phase cubic spinel creation of the synthesized ferrite samples was studied by the DTA-TGA, XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, VSM and dielectric measurements. SEM was applied to inspect the morphological variations and EDX was used to determine the compositional mass ratios. The studies on the dielectric constant (epsilon'), dielectric loss (epsilon `'), loss tangent (tan delta), ac conductivity (sigma(ac)), resistive and reactive parts of the impedance analysis (Z' and Z `') at room temperature were also carried out. The saturation magnetizations (Ms) were determined using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Ms. decreased with the increase In3+ doping content, as Fe3+ of 5(mu B) ions are replaced by In3+ of 5 mu(B) ions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report a significant improvement in mechanical and oxidation properties of near eutectic Nb-Si alloys by the addition of aluminum (Al) and control of microstructural length scale. A comparative study of two alloys Nb-18.79at%Si and Nb-12.3at%Si-9at%Al were carried out. The processing for microstructure refinements were carried out by vacuum suction casting in water cooled thick copper mould. It is shown that addition of Al suppresses Nb3Si phase and promotes beta Nb5Si3 phase under nonequilibrium solidification condition. The microstructural length scale and in particular eutectic spacing reduces significantly to 50-100 nm in suction cast ternary alloy. A detailed TEM study shows the presence of delta-Nb11Si4 phase in Nb matrix. The hardness of Nb solid solution can be increased as a consequence to a level observed in Nb3Si intermetallic due to the well oriented precipitates. Compression test yields the ultimate strength of 1.8 +/- 0.1 GPa and engineering strain of 2.3 +/- 0.03%. In comparison, the binary Nb-18.79 at% Si alloy possesses an ultimate strength of 1.35 +/- 0.1 GPa and strain of 0.2 +/- 0.01% when processed under identical conditions. The latter exhibits coarser microstructural length scale (300-400 nm) and a brittle behavior. The indentation fracture toughness of Al containing suction cast alloy shows a value of 20.2 +/- 0.5 MPa root m which represents a major improvement over bulk Nb-Si eutectic alloy. The detailed thermal studies confirm a multifold improvement in oxidation resistance up to 1000 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method has been used for the synthesis of colloids of metal nanoparticles. It is a top-down approach involving condensation of metal atoms in low temperature solvent matrices in a SMAD reactor maintained at 77 K. Warming of the matrix results in a slurry of metal atoms that interact with one another to form particles that grow in size. The organic solvent solvates the particles and acts as a weak capping agent to halt/slow down the growth process to a certain extent. This as-prepared colloid consists of metal nanoparticles that are quite polydisperse. In a process termed as digestive ripening, addition of a capping agent to the as-prepared colloid which is polydisperse renders it highly monodisperse either under ambient or thermal conditions. In this, as yet not well-understood process, smaller particles grow and the larger ones diminish in size until the system attains uniformity in size and a dynamic equilibrium is established. Using the SMAD method in combination with digestive ripening process, highly monodisperse metal, core-shell, alloy, and composite nanoparticles have been synthesized. This article is a review of our contributions together with some literature reports on this methodology to realize various nanostructured materials.

Metal-ion (Ag, Co, Ni, and Pd) doped TiO2 nanocatalysts were successfully embedded on carbon-covered alumina supports. The CCA-embedded catalysts were crystalline and had a high surface area compared to the free metal-ion doped titania nanocatalysts while they still retained the anatase phase of the core TiO2. These catalysts were photocatalytically active under solar light irradiation. Rhodamine B was used as a model pollutant and the reactivity followed a pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The reaction rate of the CCA-supported catalysts was Pd > Ag > Co > Ni. Among the ratios of the CCA:catalyst used, it was found that the 1:1 ratio had the fastest reaction rate, followed by the 1:2 ratio, while the 2:1 ratio exhibited the lowest reaction rate. The CCA/metal-ion doped titania were found to have photocatalytic activities comparable with those of CCA-supported titania.

In the present study, electrodeposition technique was used to produce Ag-Ni nanowires. Ag-Ni system shows extremely high bulk immiscibility. Nanowire morphology was achieved by employing an anodic alumina membrane having pores of similar to 200 nm diameter. Microstructure of as-deposited wire was composed of nano-sized solid solution structured Ag-Ni nanoparticles embedded in a matrix of pure Ag phase. It is proposed that the two phase microstructure resulted from an initial formation of solid solution structured nanoparticles in the alumina template pore followed by nucleation of pure Ag phase over the particles which eventually grew to form the matrix phase.
