The aims of the present study are to explore the willingness to pay a tax for the abolition of the use of pesticides as well as a premium price per kilo for organically grown fruit. An investigation was carried out in the region of Emilia-Romagna both by means of face to face questionnaires administered randomly in large supermarkets and via the World Wide Web. The results of econometric estimates show that consumers in this region appear to be particularly sensitive to the ban of pesticides and willing to pay higher prices for such products.

Il realismo di un nuovissimo medio evo: Boccaccio in the age of neorealism

After the war Italian artists and intellectuals saw a significant and necessary confluence between their political desire to create a "new." Italy and their cultural ambition to re-invigorate the study of medieval Italy. This tendency is particularly evident, I argue, in the post-war scholarly and critical focus on Boccaccio, and especially Boccaccio’s Decameron. Not only within the academy but also in the popular press, Boccaccio was granted pride of place in the canon, venerated as the pioneer of socially conscious vernacular literary realism, the archetype for the pursuit of artistic truth in the face of social upheaval. As a result, I wish to suggest, Italian neorealism, which rose to prominence in the first years after the Second World War, was in a significant sense imbued with and realised through a profound engagement with the work of Boccaccio. In turn, the cultural currents affiliated with neorealism influenced Boccaccio studies, whose operative notions of medieval «realism» were to a perhaps surprising degree stimulated by approaches to the neo-realist poetics at work in the Italian films, novels, and criticism of the 1940s and ’50s. Situating the critical discourse surrounding Boccaccio within the post-war Italian context can therefore serve to shed unexpected light on both the cultural affirmation of neorealism and the disciplinary configuration of Italian medieval studies.

Structural effects and hydrogen bonds on N,N `-di(methoxycarbonylsulfenyl)urea, [CH(3)OC(O)SNH](2)CO, studied by experimental and theoretical methods

Pure N,N`-di(methoxycarbonylsulfenyl)urea, [CH(3)OC(O)SNH](2)CO, is quantitatively prepared by the hydrolysis reaction of CH(3)OC(O)SNCO and characterized by (1)H NMR, GC-MS and FTIR spectroscopy techniques. Structural and conformational properties are analyzed using a combined approach with data obtained from X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectra and theoretical calculation methods. The IR and Raman spectra for normal and deuterated species are reported. The crystal structure of [CH(3)OC(O)SNH](2)CO was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The substance crystallizes in the orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2 space group with a = 9.524(2), b = 12.003(1), c = 4.481 (1) angstrom, and Z = 2 moieties in the unit cell. The molecule is sited on a twofold crystallographic axis (C(2)) parallel to c and shows the anti-anti conformation (S-N single bonds antiperiplanar with respect to the opposite C-N single bonds in sulfenyl-urea-sic group). Neighboring molecules are arranged in a chain motif that extends along the C(2)-axis and is held by bifurcated NH center dot center dot center dot O center dot center dot center dot HN intermolecular bonds. A local planar symmetry is observed in the crystal for the central -SN(H)C(O)N(H)S- skeleton. Experimental and calculated data allow to trace this structural feature to the occurrence of N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C hydrogen bonding interactions. On the relationships between molecular conformations and intermolecular contacts toward crystal self-assembly of mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-oxygenated xanthone derivatives

Oxygenated xanthones have been extensively investigated over the years, but there are few reports concerning their crystal structure. Our chemical investigations of Brazilian plants resulted in the isolation of four natural products named 1-hydroxyxanthone (I), 1-hydroxy-7-methoxyxanthone (II), 1,5-dihydroxy-3-methoxyxanthone (III), and 1,7-dihydroxy-3,8-dimethoxyxanthone (IV). The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of single crystal X-ray diffraction. The xanthone nucleus conformation is essentially planar with the substituents adopting the orientations less sterically hindered. In addition, classical intermolecular hydrogen bonds (O-H center dot center dot center dot O) present in III and IV give rise to infinite ribbons. However, the xanthone I does not present any intermolecular hydrogen bonds, meanwhile the xanthone II presents only a non-classical one (C-H center dot center dot center dot O). The crystal packing of all xanthone structures is also stabilized by pi-pi interactions. The fingerprint plots, derived from the Hirshfeld surfaces, exhibited significant features of each crystal structures.
