In this work we studied the synthesis of BSCCO-2212 superconducting phase associating a quite similar method developed by Pechini with the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. To study the influence of the microwaves on the properties of BSCCO system, we synthesized two samples by such method. For one sample we used carbonates and for the other one we used nitrates as chemical reagents. We also produced a reference sample just using carbonates by Pechini's method to compare their morphological and superconducting properties. The structural properties of the samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Bi-2212 phase is predominant in all samples and despites the nitrates-like sample has a broader distribution of grain size in comparison with the reference sample, its magnetic behaviour is closer to that presented by the reference one.

The objective of this work was the obtaining in situ of alpha-SiAlON-SiC composite, using an alternative rare-earth oxide mixture, RE2O3, as sintering additive, by two different sintering processes. As sintering additive, 20 vol.% of AlN-RE2O3 in a molar ratio of 90: 10 was mixed to the alpha-Si3N4 powder. In the Si3N4-AlN-RE2O3 powder mixture, 0, 10, 15 and 20wt.% of SiC were added. The powder batches were milled, dried and compacted by cold isostatic pressing. Two different sintering processes were used: gas-pressure sintering at 1950 degrees C for 1 h under 1.5 MPa of N-2 atmosphere, or uniaxial hot-pressing at 1750 degrees C, for 30 min under pressure of 20 MPa. The sintered samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical properties. XRD patterns indicate only alpha-SiAlON (alpha') and beta-SiC as crystalline phases. It was observed that the SiC addition did not influence the alpha-SiAlON formation, although the growth of elongated alpha'-grains is substantially decreased. The hot-pressed composites presented better mechanical properties, exhibiting fracture toughness of 5 MPa m(1/2) and hardness around 21.5 GPa. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

To evaluate the bond strength between two types of acrylic resin teeth and a microwave denture base resin after immersion in disinfectant solutions for 180 days. Eighty specimens made of acrylic resin teeth (Biotone and Biotone IPN) attached to a microwave polymerized denture base resin (Nature-Cryl MC) were divided into eight groups (n = 10) according to the treatment (distilled water-control, 2% chlorhexidine digluconate, 1% sodium hypochlorite and sodium perborate solution-Corega Tabs). The shear strength tests (MPa) were carried out using a universal testing machine with a 0.5 mm/min speed. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA and multiple comparison Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc test (α = 0.05). Biotone IPN showed similar results among the groups (distilled water, 8.25 ± 1.81 MPa; chlorhexidine, 7.81 ± 3.34 MPa; hypochlorite, 7.75 ± 3.72 MPa; and Corega Tabs, 7.58 ± 2.27 MPa, whereas Biotone showed significantly lower shear bond strength values for the groups immersed in Corega Tabs (5.25 ± 3.27 MPa) and chlorhexidine (6.08 ± 2.35 MPa). Soaking the dentures in 1% sodium hypochlorite could be recommended as a disinfectant solution for dentures fabricated with conventional acrylic resin denture teeth and microwave denture base resin. For dentures fabricated with IPN teeth and microwave denture base resin, all the soaking solutions evaluated in this study could be suggested to denture wearers.

Ba1-xCaxTiO3, Ba1-xSrxTiO3 and Sr1-xCaxTiO3 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1) nanoparticles were synthesized using the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Samples were prepared for 40 minutes at 140°C under a pressure of 3 MPa using an adapted domestic microwave oven. The samples were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Raman, photoluminescence (PL) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopies. XRD data show that ceramic powders have crystalline phases associated with a short-range structural disorder. This structural disorder is confirmed by Raman spectral bands indicating multi-phonon processes and the presence of defects or impurities. Such defects account for a broad band in the photoluminescence spectrum in the green light (460 nm) region for all samples. Gap energy variation, obtained from UV-Vis spectra, suggest a non-uniform band structure of these titanates in accordance with the PL results. The morphology of each sample is changed with doping and varies from a spherical to cubic appearance for energy minimization.

This paper presents the results of a study on carbothermal reduction of iron ore made under the microwave field in equipment specially developed for this purpose. The equipment allows the control of radiated and reflected microwave power, and therefore measures the microwave energy actually applied to the load in the reduction process. It also allows performing energy balances and determining the reaction rate with high levels of confidence by simultaneously measuring temperature and mass of the material upon reduction with high reproducibility. We used a microwave generator of 2.45?GHz with variable power up to 3000?W. Self-reducing pellets under argon atmosphere, containing iron ore and petroleum coke, with 3.5?g of mass and 15?mm of diameter were declined. We obtained the kinetic curves of reduction of iron ore and of energy consumption to the process in the maximum electric field, in the maximum magnetic field and at different values of power/mass. The data allow analyzing how the microwave energy was actually consumed in the reduction of ore.

Nanostructured Pb0.90Ba0.10Zr0.40Ti0.60O3 dense ceramics presenting an average grain size of 62 +/- 5 nm was prepared by the polymeric precursor method and using the spark plasma sintering technique. The dielectric permittivity curves versus temperature exhibit broad anomaly, indicative of a diffuse phase transition. This result can be explained by the spread of Curie temperatures which are expected to depend on the degree of tetragonality related to the grain size distribution. A pronounced decrease in the maximum of the dielectric permittivity value is attributed to the existence of a large amount of grain boundaries which are non-ferroelectric regions.

This paper describes the effect of using different titanium precursors on the synthesis and physical properties of SrTiO3 powders obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction measurements, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were carried out to investigate the structural and optical properties of the SrTiO3 spherical and cubelike-shaped particles. The appropriate choice of the titanium precursor allowed the control of morphological and photoluminescence (PL) properties of SrTiO3 compound. The PL emission was more intense in SrTiO3 samples composed of spherelike particles. This behavior was attributed to the existence of a lower amount of defects due to the uniformity of the spherical particles.

Microwave devulcanization has been studied as a method for elastomer recycling, which is based on the conversion of the reticulated and infusible structure of thermosetting rubbers in free polymeric chains able to be remolded by thermomechanical processing in recycling operations for the manufacture of other products. Elastomeric wastes are often irregularly discarded in nature, producing serious environmental damage, and their mechanical recycling is still considered a challenge. Thus, the development of alternatives for elastomer recycling is directly related to the actions of sustainable development and economic benefits to companies that pay to discard their wastes. The aim of this work is to evaluate the chemical modifications occurring in styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) after microwave devulcanization. Compounds of SBR were vulcanized in the presence of vulcanization agents and variable amounts of carbon black, and then the rubbers were milled and submitted to microwave treatment. Only the SBR with high carbon black content shows some portion of devulcanized material. However, the rubber with lower content of carbon black which was devulcanized by microwave radiation shows an increase in cross-link density. The microwave treatment also causes cross-link breaks mainly in polysulfidic bonds as well as decomposition of chemical groups containing sulfur attached to the chemical structure of SBR, while. the chemical bonds of higher energy such as monosulfidic bonds remain preserved. The improvement of the microwave method for rubber devulcanization represents a way for viable recycling of thermosetting rubbers.

In this work, barium zirconate (BaZrO3) ceramics synthesized by solid state reaction method and sintered at 1670 degrees C for 4 h were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement data and FT-IR spectra which confirmed that BaZrO3 ceramics have a perovskite-type cubic structure. Optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. UV-vis absorption spectra suggested an indirect allowed transition with the existence of intermediary energy levels within the band gap. Intense visible green PL emission was observed in BaZrO3 ceramics upon excitation with a 350 nm wavelength. This behavior is due to a majority of deep defects within the band gap caused by symmetry breaking in octahedral [ZrO6] clusters in the lattice. The microwave dielectric constant and quality factor were measured using the method proposed by Hakki-Coleman. The dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) was investigated experimentally and numerically using a monopole antenna through an infinite ground plane and Ansoft's high frequency structure simulator software, respectively. The required resonance frequency and bandwidth of DRA were investigated by adjusting the dimension of the same material. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The kinetic resolution of (+/-)-mandelonitrile was carried out using lipase from Candida antarctica under conventional condition (orbital shaker) and microwave irradiation in toluene, producing the (S)-mandelonitrile acetate with high selectivity (up to >98% ee, enantiomeric excess). The unreacted (R)-mandelonitrile under microwave irradiation and conventional condition was partially converted into benzaldehyde by spontaneous chemical equilibrium. The (S)-mandelonitrile acetate under microwave irradiation was produced with 92% ee and 35% yield for 8 h of reaction. Conventional transesterification of (+/-)-mandelonitrile in an orbital shaker produced unreacted (R) -mandelonitrile (51% ee) and (S)-mandelonitrile acetate (98% ee) in accordance with Kazlauskas rule for 184 h of reaction.

The spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique, by using a compacting pressure of 50 MPa, was used to consolidate pre-reacted powders of Bi1.65Pb0.35Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta (Bi-2223). The influence of the consolidation temperature, T-D, on the structural and electrical properties has been investigated and compared with those of a reference sample synthesized by the traditional solid-state reaction method and subjected to the same compacting pressure. From the X-ray diffraction patterns, performed in both powder and pellet samples, we have found that the dominant phase is the Bi-2223 in all samples but traces of the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) were identified. Their relative density were similar to 85% of the theoretical density and the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, rho(T), indicated that increasing T-D results in samples with low oxygen content because the SPS is performed in vacuum. Features of the rho(T) data, as the occurrence of normal-state semiconductor-like behavior of rho(T) and the double resistive superconducting transition, are consistent with samples comprised of grains with shell-core morphology in which the shell is oxygen deficient. The SPS samples also exhibited superconducting critical current density at 77 K, J(c)(77K), between 2 and 10A/cm(2), values much smaller than similar to 22A/cm(2) measured in the reference sample. Reoxygenation of the SPS samples, post-annealed in air at different temperatures and times, was found to improve their microstructural and transport properties. Besides the suppression of the Bragg peaks belonging to the Bi-2212 phase, the superconducting properties of the post-annealed samples and particularly J(c)(77K) were comparable or better than those corresponding to the reference sample. Post-annealed samples at 750 degrees C for 5min exhibited J(c)(77K) similar to 130A/cm(2) even when uniaxially pressed at only 50 MPa. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Optimal conditions for the microwave-assisted enzymatic synthesis of biodiesel have been developed by a full 2(2) factorial design leading to a set of seven runs with different combinations of molar ratio and temperature. The main goal was to reduce the reaction time preliminarily established by a process of conventional heating. Reactions yielding biodiesel, in which beef tallow and ethanol used as raw materials were catalyzed by lipase from Burkholderia cepacia immobilized on silica-PVA and microwave irradiations within the range of 8-15 W were performed to reach the reaction temperature. Under optimized conditions (1:6 molar ratio of beef tallow to ethanol molar ratio at 50A degrees C) almost total conversion of the fatty acid presented in the original beef tallow was converted into ethyl esters in a reaction that required 8 h, i.e., a productivity of about 92 mg ethyl esters g(-1) h(-1). This represents an increase of sixfold for the process carried out under conventional heating. In general, the process promises low energy demand and higher biodiesel productivity. The microwave assistance speeds up the enzyme catalyzed reactions, decreases the destructive effects on the enzyme of the operational conditions such as, higher temperature, stability, and specificity to its substrate, and allows the entire reaction medium to be heated uniformly.
