A multi-phase framework is typically required for the CFD modelling of metals reduction processes. Such processes typically involve the interaction of liquid metals, a gas (often air) top space, liquid droplets in the top space and injection of both solid particles and gaseous bubbles into the bath. The exchange of mass, momentum and energy between the phases is fundamental to these processes. Multi-phase algorithms are complex and can be unreliable in terms of either or both convergence behaviour or in the extent to which the physics is captured. In this contribution, we discuss these multi-phase flow issues and describe an example of each of the main “single phase” approaches to modelling this class of problems (i.e., Eulerian–Lagrangian and Eulerian–Eulerian). Their utility is illustrated in the context of two problems – one involving the injection of sparging gases into a steel continuous slab caster and the other based on the development of a novel process for aluminium electrolysis. In the steel caster, the coupling of the Lagrangian tracking of the gas phase with the continuum enables the simulation of the transient motion of the metal–flux interface. The model of the electrolysis process employs a novel method for the calculation of slip velocities of oxygen bubbles, resulting from the dissolution of alumina, which allows the efficiency of the process to be predicted.

A procedure for estimating total organochlorine pesticide and PCB residue in seal blubber at concentrations of greater than 1μg g-1 of lipid is described. Lipid is cleaned up by alumina column chromatography, and the halogen concentration of the resulting hexane eluace is determined by combustion and microcoulometry. Results are similar to those obtained by gas chromatographic analysis and can be used to interpolate between results so obtained when data on specific organochlorine compounds is not required for each sample. The organochlorine residues recovered in this manner did not constitute all the halogen determined by combustion and microcoulometry of seal lipid. Analysis by the total halogen procedure was 2.5 tunes faster than the rate achieved with a combination of liquid and gas chromatography operated manually; the requirements for laboratory equipment and space for sample preparation are reduced.

The sulphur tolerance and thermal stability of a 2 wt% Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst was investigated for the H-2-promoted SCR of NO, with octane and toluene. The aged catalyst was characterised by XRD and EXAFS analysis. It was found that the effect of ageing was a function of the gas mix and temperature of ageing. At high temperatures (800 degrees C) the catalyst deactivated regardless of the reaction mix. EXAFS analysis showed that this was associated with the Ag particles on the surface of the catalyst becoming more ordered. At 600 and 700 degrees C, the deactivating effect of ageing was much less pronounced for the catalyst in the H-2-promoted octane-SCR reaction and ageing at 600 degrees C resulted in an enhancement in activity for the reaction in the absence of H-2. For the toluene + H-2-SCR reaction the catalyst deactivated at each ageing temperature. The effect of addition of low levels of sulphur (1 ppm SO2) to the feed was very much dependent on the reaction temperature. There was little deactivation of the catalyst at low temperatures ( 500 degrees C). The results can be explained by the activity of the catalyst for the oxidation Of SO2 to SO3 and the relative stability of silver and aluminium sulphates. The catalyst could be almost fully regenerated by a combination of heating and the presence of hydrogen in the regeneration mix. The catalyst could not be regenerated in the absence of hydrogen. We report on the successful fabrication of arrays of switchable nanocapacitors made by harnessing the self-assembly of materials. The structures are composed of arrays of 20-40 nm diameter Pt nanowires, spaced 50-100 nm apart, electrodeposited through nanoporous alumina onto a thin film lower electrode on a silicon wafer. A thin film ferroelectric (both barium titanate (BTO) and lead zirconium titanate (PZT)) has been deposited on top of the nanowire array, followed by the deposition of thin film upper electrodes. The PZT nanocapacitors exhibit hysteresis loops with substantial remnant polarizations, while although the switching performance was inferior, the low-field characteristics of the BTO nanocapacitors show dielectric behavior comparable to conventional thin film heterostructures. While registration is not sufficient for commercial RAM production, this is nevertheless an embryonic form of the highest density hard-wired FRAM capacitor array reported to date and compares favorably with atomic force microscopy read-write densities.

The electro-optic response of a cell consisting of a thin layer of liquid crystal deposited onto gold nanorods embedded in thin film alumina with a transparent top electrode has been investigated. For p-polarized light incident from the liquid crystal side, the extinction peak associated with the nanorod longitudinal plasmon resonance is completely suppressed. The peak could be recovered by applying an external electric field parallel to the long axis of the nanorods. No extinction peak suppression is observed when the light was incident from the nanorod side of the cell. The effect is explained by polarization properties of liquid crystal.

The production of hydrogen by steam reforming of bio-oils obtained from the fast pyrolysis of biomass requires the development of efficient catalysts able to cope with the complex chemical nature of the reactant. The present work focuses on the use of noble metal-based catalysts for the steam reforming of a few model compounds and that of an actual bio-oil. The steam reforming of the model compounds was investigated in the temperature range 650-950 degrees C over Pt, Pd and Rh supported on alumina and a ceria-zirconia sample. The model compounds used were acetic acid, phenol, acetone and ethanol. The nature of the support appeared to play a significant role in the activity of these catalysts. The use of ceria-zirconia, a redox mixed oxide, lead to higher H-2 yields as compared to the case of the alumina-supported catalysts. The supported Rh and Pt catalysts were the most active for the steam reforming of these compounds, while Pd-based catalysts poorly performed. The activity of the promising Pt and Rh catalysts was also investigated for the steam reforming of a bio-oil obtained from beech wood fast pyrolysis. Temperatures close to, or higher than, 800 degrees C were required to achieve significant conversions to COx and H-2 (e.g., H-2 yields around 70%). The ceria-zirconia materials showed a higher activity than the corresponding alumina samples. A Pt/ceria-zirconia sample used for over 9 h showed essentially constant activity, while extensive carbonaceous deposits were observed on the quartz reactor walls from early time on stream. In the present case, no benefit was observed by adding a small amount of O-2 to the steam/bio-oil feed (autothermal reforming, ATR), probably partly due to the already high concentration of oxygen in the bio-oil composition. Research on the selective reduction of NOx with hydrocarbons under lean-burn conditions using non-zeolitic oxides and platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts has been critically reviewed. Alumina and silver-promoted alumina catalysts have been described in detail with particular emphasis on an analysis of the various reaction mechanisms that have been put forward in the literature. The influence of the nature of the reducing agent, and the preparation and structure of the catalysts have also been discussed and rationalised for several other oxide systems. It is concluded for non-zeolitic oxides that species that are strongly adsorbed on the surface, such as nitrates/nitrites and acetates, could be key intermediates in the formation of various reduced and oxidised species of nitrogen, the further reaction of which leads eventually to the formation of molecular nitrogen. For the platinum group metal catalysts, the different mechanisms that have been proposed in the literature have been critically assessed. It is concluded that although there is indirect, mainly spectroscopic, evidence for various reaction intermediates on the catalyst surface, it is difficult to confirm that any of these are involved in a critical mechanistic step because of a lack of a direct quantitative correlation between infrared and kinetic measurements. A simple mechanism which involves the dissociation of NO on a reduced metal surface to give N(ads) and O(ads), with subsequent desorption of N-2 and N2O and removal of O(ads) by the reductant can explain many of the results with the platinum group metal catalysts, although an additional contribution from organo-nitro-type species may contribute to the overall NOx reduction activity with these catalysts.

Three supported La0.8Sr0.2MnO3+x catalysts were prepared, one supported on lanthanum-stabilised alumina and two supported on a NiAl2O4 spinel. The catalysts were characterised using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and surface area measurements following heat-treatments at temperatures up to 1200 degreesC in air. In the alumina-supported catalyst, a reaction occurred between the active phase and the support at high temperatures, indicating that these materials would be unsuitable for high temperature catalytic combustion. Only in the NiAl2O4-supported catalysts were the supported perovskite phases found to be stable at high temperature. These catalysts showed good methane combustion activity. A detailed theoretical analysis has been carried out to study efficient heating due to microwaves for one-dimensional (1D) oil–water emulsion samples placed on various ceramic, metallic (reflective) and ceramic–metallic composite supports. Two typical emulsion systems are considered such as oil-in-water (o/w) and water-in-oil (w/o). A preliminary study has been carried out via average power vs emulsion thickness diagram to estimate microwave power absorption within emulsion samples for various cases. The maxima in average power, also termed as ‘resonances’, are observed for specific emulsion thicknesses and the two consecutive resonances of significant magnitudes are termed as R1 and R2 modes. For both o/w and w/o emulsions, it is observed that microwave power absorption is enhanced in presence of metallic and composite supports during both R1 and R2 modes. The efficient heating strategies characterized by ‘large heating rates’ with ‘minimal thermal runaway’ i.e. uniform temperature distributions within the sample have been assessed for each type of emulsion. Based on the detailed spatial distributions of power and temperature for various cases, SiC-metallic composite support may be recommended as an optimal heating strategy for o/w samples with higher oil fractions (0.45) whereas metallic and Alumina-metallic composite supports may be favored for samples with smaller oil fractions (=0.3) during R1 mode. For w/o samples, SiC-metallic composite support may be suitable heating strategy for all ranges of water fractions during R1 mode. During R2 mode, metallic and Alumina-metallic composite supports are favored for both o/w and w/o emulsion samples. Current study recommends the efficient way to use microwaves in a single mode waveguide and the heating strategy can be suitably extended for heating of any other emulsions for which dielectric properties are easily measurable or available in the literature.

The selective reduction of molecular oxygen with excess H-2 in the presence of alkenes was achieved successfully for the first time: silver supported on alumina catalysts exhibited full conversion of O-2 at temperature as low as 50 degrees C, while the conversion of ethene or propene remained essentially zero up to 250 degrees C.

Silver colloids prepared by reducing AgNO3 in aqueous solution with sodium citrate were embedded in alumina following two different preparation procedures resulting in samples containing 3 and 5 wt.% silver. Characterization of these materials using TEM. XPS, XAES, CP/MAS NMR, XRD, and adsorption-desorption isotherms of nitrogen showed that embedding the pre-prepared silver colloids into the alumina via the sol-gel procedure preserved the particle size of silver. However, as XAES demonstrates, the catalysts prepared in a sol-gel with a lower amount of water led to embedded colloids with a higher population of Ag+ species. The catalytic behaviors of the resultant catalysts were well correlated with the concentration of these species. Thus, the active silver species of the catalysts containing more Ag+ species selectively converts NO to N-2. However, subsequent thermal aging leads to an enhancement of the conversion of NO parallel to slight alteration of the selectivity with the appearance of low amounts of N2O despite an increase of Ag+ species. Accordingly, an optimal surface Ag-0/Ag+ ratio is probably needed, independently of the size of silver particles. It was found that this optimal ratio strongly depends on the operating conditions during the synthesis route. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Monolithic catalysts are widely used as structured catalysts, especially in the abatement of pollutants. Probing what happens inside these monoliths during operation is, therefore, vital for modelling and prediction of the catalyst behavior. SpaciMS is a spatially resolved capillary-inlet mass spectroscopy system allowing for the generation of spatially resolved maps of the reactions within monoliths. In this study SpaciMS results combined with 3D CFD modelling demonstrate that SpaciMS is a highly sensitive and minimally invasive technique that can provide reaction maps as well as catalytic temporal behavior. Herein we illustrate this by examining kinetic oscillations during a CO oxidation reaction over a Pt/Rh on alumina catalyst supported on a cordierite monolith. These oscillations were only observed within the monolith by SpaciMS between 30 and 90% CO conversion. Equivalent experiments performed in a plug-flow reactor using this catalyst in a crushed form over a similar range of reaction conditions did not display any oscillations demonstrating the importance of intra monolith analysis. This work demonstrates that the SpaciMS offers an accurate and comprehensive picture of structured catalysts under operation.

Silver nanorods have been grown by electrodeposition into thin film porous alumina templates (AAO). Optical transmission measurements using p-polarized incident white light shows clear plasmon resonance extinction peaks. We successfully model the dependence on angle in incidence of extinction peak height and position using a multiple-multipoles (MMP) approach with the different spectral features being clearly associated with the effective electric field distribution and coupling between individual nanorods.

Various industrial by-products, such as fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and silica fume, have been used in concrete to improve its properties. This also enables any environmental issues associated with their disposal. Another material that is available in large quantities and requiring alternative methods of disposal is the Bauxite Refinery Reside (BRR) from the Bayer process used to extract alumina from bauxite. As this is highly caustic and causes many health hazards, Virotec International Ltd. developed a patented technology to convert this into a material that can be used commercially, known as Bauxsol™, for various environmental remediation applications. This use is limited to small quantities of seawater-neutralised BRR and hence an investigation was carried out to establish its potential utilisation as a sand replacement material in concrete. In addition to fresh properties of concrete containing seawater-neutralised BRR up to 20% by mass of Portland cement, mechanical and durability properties were determined. These properties indicated that seawater-neutralised BRR can be used to replace natural sand up to 10% by mass of cement to improve the durability properties of concrete without detrimentally affecting their physical properties. Combining these beneficial effects with environmental remediation applications, it can be concluded that there are specific applications where concretes containing seawater-neutralised BRR could be used.

Silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) substrates have been proven to offer significant advantages in the integration of passive and active devices in RF circuits. Germanium on insulator technology is a candidate for future higher performance circuits. Thus the advantages of employing a low loss dielectric substrate other than a silicon-dioxide layer on silicon will be even greater. This paper covers the production of germanium on sapphire (GeOS) substrates by wafer bonding. The quality of the germanium back interface is studied and a tungsten self-aligned gate process MOST process has been developed. High low field mobilities of 450-500 cm2/V-s have been achieved for p-channel MOSTs produced on GeOS substrates. Thick germanium on alumina (GOAL) substrates have also been produced.
