We report on a procedure to improve the resolution of far-field imaging by using a neighboring high-index medium that is coated with a left-handed metamaterial. The resulting plot can also exhibit an enhanced transmission by considering proper conditions to retract backscattering. Based on negative refraction, geometrical aberrations are considered in detail since they may cause a great impact in this sort of diffraction-unlimited imaging by reducing its resolution power. We employ a standard aberration analysis to refine the asymmetric configuration of metamaterial superlenses. We demonstrate that low-order centrosymmetric aberrations can be fully corrected for a given object plane. For subwavelength-resolution imaging, however, high-order aberrations become of relevance, which may be balanced with defocus. Not only the point spread function but also numerical simulations based on the finite-element method support our theoretical analysis, and subwavelength resolution is verified in the image plane.

This paper studies stability properties of linear optimization problems with finitely many variables and an arbitrary number of constraints, when only left hand side coefficients can be perturbed. The coefficients of the constraints are assumed to be continuous functions with respect to an index which ranges on certain compact Hausdorff topological space, and these properties are preserved by the admissible perturbations. More in detail, the paper analyzes the continuity properties of the feasible set, the optimal set and the optimal value, as well as the preservation of desirable properties (boundedness, uniqueness) of the feasible and of the optimal sets, under sufficiently small perturbations.

While there are currently very few lone actor terrorists among modern anarchists and within the contemporary extreme left, the present lack of extreme left wing lone actor terrorists does not signify a lack of interest in violent solutions within this particular milieu. As the author will show, twenty-flrst century anarchism has considerable potential for lone actor terrorism. It would be imprudent to conclude that this once important ideological source of lone actor terrorism will not reappear again.

The political landscape in Greece is confused and volatile at the moment; the right and extreme- right-wing parties are accorded a disproportionately large place in political debate, while the radical left-wing SYRIZA party is attempting to maintain a ‘leftist’ profile and demonstrate its capacity to govern through a strategy of image normalisation. These tensions make it very difficult for the Greek government to stick to the EU’s tough reform agenda. The governing coalition is trying to conceal the social effects of implementing structural policy reforms, even postponing some measures to avoid bearing their political cost. At the same time, it is adopting a very rushed, and thus quite worrying, attitude towards a fast-track growth agenda, without taking into consideration the conditions for sustainable economic development.

This paper addresses globalization and governance in the EU by attempting to generate some plausible hypotheses that might explain the policy choices of the 12 out of 15 European democratic left governments. With all of the discussion in recent years of a democratic deficit, and then need to maintain a "social Europe," why have these governments not produced more explicit left-wing policies? It suggests three possible hypotheses to account for this apparently mysterious outcome. Hypothesis #1: They want to but they can't. Hypothesis #2: They don't want to because they aren't really left anymore. Hypothesis #3: They could, but they all are suffering from a fundamental failure of imagination. The paper explores each of these hypotheses in two ways. First it examines the initial years of the Schröder government in Germany apparently, pursuing each of these three hypotheses and different times during this period. Then it looks more systematically and comparatively and each of the three hypotheses by including analysis both of Germany and several other EU member states. The larger goal of this work is to provoke discussion and research on what role left political movements can actually play. Is it even reasonable to expect such a group of nation states to develop innovative forms of cross-national governance? Or are new and/or revised forms of representation and governance beyond traditional nation-state models.

BACKGROUND Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) from the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) region can be inaccessible for ablation because of epicardial fat or overlying coronary arteries. OBJECTIVE We describe surgical cryoablation of this type of VA. METHODS From March 2009 to 2014, 190 consecutive patients with VAs originating from the LVOT underwent ablation at our institution. Four patients (2%) underwent surgical cryoablation for highly symptomatic VAs after failing catheter ablation. RESULTS In all patients, endocardial or percutaneous epicardial mapping was consistent with origin in the LVOT. In 2 patients, the points of earliest activation during VAs were marked with a bipolar pacing lead in the overlying cardiac vein for guidance during surgery. Surgical cryoablation was successful in 3 of the 4 patients. The fourth patient subsequently had successful endocardial catheter ablation. During a mean follow-up of 22 ± 16 months (range 4-42 months), all patients showed abolition of or marked reduction in symptomatic VA. However, 1 patient subsequently required percutaneous intervention to the left anterior descending coronary artery; another developed progressive left ventricular systolic dysfunction caused by nonischemic cardiomyopathy; and a third patient underwent permanent pacemaker implantation because of complete atrioventricular block after concomitant aortic valve replacement. CONCLUSION Surgical cryoablation is an option for highly symptomatic drug-resistant VAs emanating from the LVOT region. Despite extensive preoperative mapping, the procedure is not effective for all patients, and coronary injury is a risk.
