Tastes and odours are amongst the few water quality standards immediately apparent to a consumer and, as a result, account for most consumer complaints about water quality. Although taste and odour problems can arise from a great many sources, from an operational point of view they are either ”predictable” or ”unpredictable”. The former - which include problems related to actinomycete and algal growth - have a tendency to occur in certain types of water under certain combinations of conditions, whereas the latter - typically chemical spills - can occur anywhere. Long-term control is one option for predictable problems, although biomanipulation on a large scale has had utile success. Detection and avoidance is a more practicable option for both predictable and unpredictable problems, particularly if the distribution network can be serviced from other sources. Where these are not feasible, then water treatment, typically using activated carbon, is possible. In general there is a reasonable understanding of what compounds cause taste and odour problems, and how to treat these. An efficient taste and odour control programme therefore relies ultimately on good management of existing resources. However, a number of problems lie outside the remit of water supply companies and will require more fundamental regulation of activities in the catchment.

The biomass of the phytoplankton and its composition is one of the most important factors in water quality control. Determination of the phytoplankton assemblage is usually done by microscopic analysis (Utermöhl's method). Quantitative estimations of the biovolume, by cell counting and cell size measurements, are time-consuming and normally are not done in routine water quality control. Several alternatives have been tried: computer-based image analysis, spectral fluorescence signatures, flow cytometry and pigment fingerprinting aided by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The latter method is based on the fact that each major algal group of taxa contains a specific carotenoid which can be used for identification and relative quantification of the taxa in the total assemblage. This article gives a brief comparative introduction to the different techniques available and presents some recent results obtained by HPLC-based pigment fingerprinting, applied to three lakes of different trophic status. The results show that this technique yields reliable results from different lake types and is a powerful tool for studying the distribution pattern of the phytoplankton community in relation to water depth. However, some restrictions should be taken into account for the interpretation of routine data.

Effects of context on the perception of, and incidental memory for, real-world objects have predominantly been investigated in younger individuals, under conditions involving a single static viewpoint. We examined the effects of prior object context and object familiarity on both older and younger adults' incidental memory for real objects encountered while they traversed a conference room. Recognition memory for context-typical and context-atypical objects was compared with a third group of unfamiliar objects that were not readily named and that had no strongly associated context. Both older and younger adults demonstrated a typicality effect, showing significantly lower 2-alternative-forced-choice recognition of context-typical than context-atypical objects; for these objects, the recognition of older adults either significantly exceeded, or numerically surpassed, that of younger adults. Testing-awareness elevated recognition but did not interact with age or with object type. Older adults showed significantly higher recognition for context-atypical objects than for unfamiliar objects that had no prior strongly associated context. The observation of a typicality effect in both age groups is consistent with preserved semantic schemata processing in aging. The incidental recognition advantage of older over younger adults for the context-typical and context-atypical objects may reflect aging-related differences in goal-related processing, with older adults under comparatively more novel circumstances being more likely to direct their attention to the external environment, or age-related differences in top-down effortful distraction regulation, with older individuals' attention more readily captured by salient objects in the environment. Older adults' reduced recognition of unfamiliar objects compared to context-atypical objects may reflect possible age differences in contextually driven expectancy violations. The latter finding underscores the theoretical and methodological value of including a third type of objects-that are comparatively neutral with respect to their contextual associations-to help differentiate between contextual integration effects (for schema-consistent objects) and expectancy violations (for schema-inconsistent objects).

In this paper, we present results on upconversion luminescence performed on Yb3+-doped yttrium aluminum garnets under 940 nm excitation. The upconversion luminescence was ascribed to Yb3+ cooperative luminescence and the presence of rare earth impurity ions. The cooperative luminescence spectra as a function of Yb concentration were measured and the emission intensity variation with Yb concentration was discussed. Yb3+ energy migration quenched the cooperative luminescence of Yb:YAG crystals with doping level over 15 at%. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sm3+-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite (YAP) single crystal was grown by Czochralski (CZ) method. The absorption and fluorescence spectra along the crystallographic axis b were measured at room temperature. Judd-Ofelt theory was used to calculate the intensity parameters (Omega(t)), the spontaneous emission probability, the branching ratio and the radiative lifetime of the state (4)G(5/2). The peak emission cross-sections were also estimated at 567, 607, and 648 nm wavelengths. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report the synthesis of high-luminance Y2O3:Eu nanocrystal through a citrate-nitrate complexation combustion method at a low temperature of 200-280 degrees C. The as-combusted Y2O3:Eu phosphors are almost equiaxed crystallites with an average size of 30-40 run, and have an intense red luminescence. The present fuel-deficient method suggests that by control of the ratio of citric acid to nitrates, it is valuable for the fabrication of Y2O3 nanoparticles without heat treatment. This process should be applicable to a wide range of nanocrystal oxides.

Y4Al2O9:EU3+ phosphor was synthesized through a sol-gel combustion method. The Y4Al2O9 phase can form through sintering at 800 degrees C. This temperature is much lower than that required via the solid state reaction method. The average grain size of the phosphor was about 30 run. Compared with the amorphous phosphor, the charge transfer band of crystalline phosphor shows a blue shift. The emission Of Y4Al2O9:Eu3+ indicates the existence of two luminescent centers, in agreement with the crystal structure of Y4Al2O9. Higher doping concentration could be realized in Y4Al2O9 nanocrystal host lattice. This indicates that the sol-gel combustion synthesis method can increase emission intensity and quenching concentration due to a good distribution of EU3+ activators in Y4Al2O9 host. Color centers and impurity defects of Ce:YAG crystals grown in reduction atmosphere by temperature gradient techniques have been investigated by means of gamma irradiation and thermal treatments. Four absorption bands associated with color centers or impurity defects at 235, 255, 294 and 370 nm were observed in as-grown crystals. Changes in optical intensity of the 235 and 370 nm bands after gamma irradiation indicate that they are associated with F+-type color center. Charge state change processes of Fe3+ impurity and Ce3+ ions take place in the irradiation process. The variations of Ce3+ ions concentration clearly indicate that Ce4+ ions exist in Ce:YAG crystals and gamma irradiations could increase the concentration of Ce3+ ions. Annealing treatments and the changes in optical density suggest that a heterovalent impurity ion associated with the 294 nm band seems to be present in the crystals. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Spectroscopic properties of (Y0.9-xLa0.1Ybx)(2)O-3 transparent ceramic were studied. Two main absorption peaks of the specimen are centered at 940 and 970 nm, which are suitable for InGaAs laser diode pumping. The main emission peaks were located at 1032 and 1075 nm with larger emission cross-section and longer fluorescence lifetime than those of Yb:Y2O3. These properties of (Y0.9-xLa0.1Ybx)(2)O-3 transparent ceramic are favorable to achieve high efficiency and high power laser output. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The up-conversion luminescence of Yb3+-doped yttriurn lanthanum oxide transparent ceramic was investigated. It was ascribed to cooperative luminescence originated from the coupled states of the Yb3+ ion pairs. The proper doping of La2O3 can remove the cooperative luminescence of Yb3+ ion. But excessive La2O3 (at least 10 at.%) the cooperative up-conversion of Yb3+:Y2O3 is obtained again, and the intensity of up-conversion luminescence strengthens with the increase of La2O3 content. Luminescence characteristics of Yb3+, La3+ codoped yttrium oxide nanopowders were investigated. The grain size and the crystallinity of (Yb0.05Y0.90La0.05)(2)O-3 nanopowders increase with the increase of calcination temperature. The average grain size of the nanopowders calcined at 1100 degrees C is 66 nm and its cooperative up-conversion luminescence centered at 498 nm was detected due to nanometer size effect and perfect crystallinity. However, the cooperative up-conversion luminescence of (Yb0.05Y0.90La0.05)(2)O-3 transparent ceramics was not detected. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Yb3+ heavy-doped yttrium lanthanum oxide transparent ceramics were fabricated and their spectroscopic properties were investigated. The absorption bands of (YbxY0.9-xLa0.1)(2)O-3 (x = 0.05-0.15) ceramics are broad at wavelength of 900-1000 nm. The absorption cross-sections centered at 974 nm and the emission cross-sections at 1031 nm of Yb3+ ion are 0.89-1.12 x 10(-20) cm(2) and 1.05 x 10(-20) cm(2) respectively. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of Yb3+-doped yttrium lanthanum oxide ceramics increased firstly, then decreased with the increase of Yb3+ ion content. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Ta2O5 films are deposited on fused silica substrates by conventional electron beam evaporation method. By annealing at different temperatures, Ta2O5 films of amorphous, hexagonal and orthorhombic phases are obtained and confirmed by x-ray diffractometer ( XRD) results. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( XPS) analysis shows that chemical composition of all the films is stoichiometry. It is found that the amorphous Ta2O5 film achieves the highest laser induced damage threshold ( LIDT) either at 355 or 1064 nm, followed by hexagonal phase and finally orthorhombic phase. The damage morphologies at 355 and 1064 nm are different as the former shows a uniform fused area while the latter is centred on one or more defect points, which is induced by different damage mechanisms. The decrease of the LIDT at 1064nm is attributed to the increasing structural defect, while at 355nm is due to the combination effect of the increasing structural defect and decreasing band gap energy.
