Osmosis Theme Park: piano per la rigenerazione urbana della ex discarica di Küçükçekmece ad Istanbul

Questa tesi di laurea nasce dall’approfondimento del progetto che abbiamo sviluppato nel laboratorio di progettazione architettonica frequentato presso la Middle East Technical University, METU, di Ankara, Turchia, durante l’anno accademico 2011-12. La prima parte del corso, tenuto dai professori S. Özkan e Z. Mennan, consisteva nello studio e analisi critica dei progetti in concorso per il bando “Istanbul Theme Park��� e nella riproposizione, da presentare a gruppi, di uno dei masterplan studiati, con le modifiche ritenute necessarie a fronte delle considerazioni fatte e di nuove idee progettuali. Lo step successivo è stato quello di approfondire individualmente la progettazione architettonica di un area di almeno 100.000 mq in scala 1:500 e di un edificio in dettaglio 1:200. Date le tempistiche molto ridotte del corso, che si completava in tredici settimane, abbiamo scelto di continuare il lavoro e approfondire, con l’aiuto della prof.ssa V. Orioli e dell’arch. E. Brighi, l’elaborazione del masterplan arrivando ad una definizione maggiore di tutta l’area e non solamente delle aree di interesse approfondite durante la permanenza in Turchia. Il progetto presentato è quindi il frutto di un anno di lavoro sulla riqualificazione di un area di 150 ettari precedentemente adibita a discarica, situata nella parte occidentale di Istanbul. L’obiettivo che abbiamo perseguito è stato quello di ricreare nella periferia della metropoli turca uno stralcio di città con caratteri più “europei”, comprendendo in un solo grande ambito di progetto tutte le funzioni necessarie alla vita di un quartiere cittadino ma anche le grandi strutture attrattive richieste dal concorso. Durante il nostro percorso abbiamo cercato anche di non perdere di vista il contesto in cui lavoravamo e le abitudini della società turca con cui ci andavamo a confrontare. Nonostante la forte occidentalizzazione delle zone ricche delle grandi città come Istanbul, Ankara e Izmir, gli stili di vita europeo e turco sono fondamentalmente differenti e progettare una città, o uno stralcio di essa, per un popolo diverso necessita la conoscenza dei suoi valori fondamentali e delle abitudini che ne scandiscono le giornate.

Characterisation and clinical features of Enterobacter cloacae bloodstream infections occurring at a tertiary care university hospital in Switzerland: is cefepime adequate therapy?

Despite many years of clinical experience with cefepime, data regarding the outcome of patients suffering from bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to Enterobacter cloacae (Ecl) are scarce. To address the gap in our knowledge, 57 Ecl responsible for 51 BSIs were analysed implementing phenotypic and molecular methods (microarrays, PCRs for bla and other genes, rep-PCR to analyse clonality). Only two E. cloacae (3.5%) were ESBL-producers, whereas 34 (59.6%) and 18 (31.6%) possessed inducible (Ind-Ecl) or derepressed (Der-Ecl) AmpC enzymes, respectively. All isolates were susceptible to imipenem, meropenem, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin. Der-Ecl were highly resistant to ceftazidime and piperacillin/tazobactam (both MIC₉₀≥256 μg/mL), whereas cefepime retained its activity (MIC₉₀ of 3 μg/mL). rep-PCR indicated that the isolates were sporadic, but Ecl collected from the same patients were indistinguishable. In particular, three BSIs initially due to Ind-Ecl evolved (under ceftriaxone or piperacillin/tazobactam treatment) into Der-Ecl because of mutations or a deletion in ampD or insertion of IS4321 in the promoter. These last two mechanisms have never been described in Ecl. Mortality was higher for BSIs due to Der-Ecl than Ind-Ecl (3.8% vs. 29.4%; P=0.028) and was associated with the Charlson co-morbidity index (P=0.046). Using the following directed treatments, patients with BSI showed a favourable treatment outcome: cefepime (16/18; 88.9%); carbapenems (12/13; 92.3%); ceftriaxone (4/7; 57.1%); piperacillin/tazobactam (5/7; 71.4%); and ciprofloxacin (6/6; 100%). Cefepime represents a safe therapeutic option and an alternative to carbapenems to treat BSIs due to Ecl when the prevalence of ESBL-producers is low.

They include a photographic exhibit titled “Rural Reflections: Finnish American Buildings and Landscapes in Michigan’s Copper Country”; a historic photography exhibit named “People, Place and Time: Michigan’s Copper Country Through the Lens of J.W. Nara”; and a pair of lithographs acquired by the National Park Service which were on either side of the Italian Hall stage the night of the infamous Christmas Eve tragedy 100 years ago. The “Rural Reflections” exhibit documents the built environment that Finnish immigrants and their descendants created in Michigan's Copper Country from the 1880s through the 1930s. Although much of this heritage has been lost with the passage of time, the district yet holds one of the largest concentrations of rural Finnish buildings and cultural landscapes in North America. The Nara exhibit, funded in part by descendants Robert and Ruth Nara of Bootjack Michigan, works from historical photographs held at the Michigan Tech Archives. Interpretive panels highlight the people, places, and times that J.W. Nara experienced during his lifetime and include material on urban life, farming, and the 1913 Michigan copper miners’ strike. The lithographs are a recent and unique acquisition for the Keweenaw National Historical Park, and will be on protected display at the FAHC. One of the panels shows the Italian royal family and was produced in 1908, while the other, produced in 1905, is of the five founders of the modern Italian state. A MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM AND EVALUATION SCHEME FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

Early Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) had their origin in humanitarian motives, and there was little concern for their cost/benefit ratios; however, as some programs began accumulating data and analyzing it over time, even with single variables such as absenteeism, it became apparent that the humanitarian reasons for a program could be reinforced by cost savings particularly when the existence of the program was subject to justification.^ Today there is general agreement that cost/benefit analyses of EAPs are desirable, but the specific models for such analyses, particularly those making use of sophisticated but simple computer based data management systems, are few.^ The purpose of this research and development project was to develop a method, a design, and a prototype for gathering managing and presenting information about EAPS. This scheme provides information retrieval and analyses relevant to such aspects of EAP operations as: (1) EAP personnel activities, (2) Supervisory training effectiveness, (3) Client population demographics, (4) Assessment and Referral Effectiveness, (5) Treatment network efficacy, (6) Economic worth of the EAP.^ This scheme has been implemented and made operational at The University of Texas Employee Assistance Programs for more than three years.^ Application of the scheme in the various programs has defined certain variables which remained necessary in all programs. Depending on the degree of aggressiveness for data acquisition maintained by program personnel, other program specific variables are also defined. ^
