Semifactual: Byrne's account of even-if

Byrne's approach to the semifactual conditional captures the reasoning data. However, we argue that it does not account for the processes or Principles by which people arrive at representations of even-if conditionals, upon which their reasoning is said to be based. Drawing upon recent work on the suppositional conditional we present such an account.

Signal residuals and hermit crab displays: flaunt it if you have it!

In animal contests selection should favour information gathering regarding the likely costs and benefits of continued conflict, and displays may provide a means for contestants to gain information about the fighting ability or aggressive intent of competitors. However, there is debate over the reliability of such displays and low levels of deception may occur within otherwise honest signalling systems. Hermit crabs use displays involving the chelipeds during agonistic encounters. We examined how variation in chelae size in relation to body size, a determinant of fighting ability, affects their use in displays and the process and outcome of contests over gastropod shells. In accordance with deceptive use of an otherwise honest signal, we found that contestants with large chelipeds for their body size spent more time performing the cheliped presentation display. Moreover, cheliped residuals and displays influenced the escalation level of encounters. There was a positive association between cheliped displays and the occurrence of 'grappling', but a negative association between displays and the occurrence of shell fights, suggesting that displays may signal aggressive intent and a reluctance to back off or accept the more passive defender role in a fight. Furthermore, the smaller of the two contestants in shell fights had larger cheliped residuals compared to those smaller contestants not involved in shell fights, which is consistent with disrupted opponent assessment. This study adds to mounting evidence that when acting as a signaller, individuals for whom the display exaggerates competitive ability attempt to manipulate opponents, using the display more often. Investigation of Ultimate Strength of Deck Slabs in Steel-Concrete Bridges

In the last 50 years, many bridges have been built as composite structures with decks of reinforced concrete that are supported by longitudinal steel beams. The presence of the longitudinal steel beams and the unloaded area of concrete slab cause the loaded deck slabs to be restrained against lateral expansion. As a result, a compressive membrane thrust is developed. In experimental tests, the authors built a series of one-third scale steel-concrete composite bridge models with several varying structural parameters, including concrete compressive strength, reinforcement percentage, and the size of steel supporting beams. After comparing the results of different models, the influence of these structural parameters on the amount of compressive membrane action in the deck slab was evaluated. Furthermore, the improvement of an existing theoretical model provided accurate predictions for the loading-carrying capacities.

Ultimate compressive strength of cold-formed steel angle struts loaded through a single bolt

This paper presents design recommendations for the strength of cold-formed steel angle structs. The work was part funded by the Carnegie Trust and is co-authored by academics from Hong-Kong University. The work has led to a collaboration with the University of Malaya, attempting to predict the strength using artificial neural networks.

Optimum joint detail for a general cold-formed steel portal frame

In the design of cold-formed steel portal frames it is essential that joint flexibility is taken into account in frame analysis. This paper describes optimisation of the joint detail of a cold-formed steel portal frame, conducted concurrently with frame analysis. It is one of the outputs of an Industrial CASE award on the design of cold-formed steel portal frames, which is being used to support a KTP application.
