The booklet tells the history of the construction of the Iowa Highway 376 Bridge within the context of significant modernization and expansion of the highway system in Iowa in the 1950s. Curvy, narrow highways were widened and straightened and narrow iron truss bridges were replaced with more modern concrete and steel structures, changing the landscape of rural Iowa. Bridge engineer Herbert A Arthur, who designed the Iowa Highway 376 Bridge, was a prolific bridge engineer in the 1950s. This booklet serves to inform the public of this significant aspect of Iowa transportation history.

Immigrant Pupils in Special Education Schools The study focused on the opinions of immigrant pupils in the 1st–9th grades of basic education in four special education schools of the City of Turku and in need of special support about the following: 1. Their difficulties in going to school in general education before the transfer to a special education school. 2. Their opinions about the transfer process to special education and the changes in their school practice after being transferred to a special education school. 3. Their experiences about their school and coping in special education school. The study strengthened the idea that immigrant pupils need positive special treatment, linguistic support, individual guidance, small teaching groups and operating models that promote well-being on their integration and education path. The central educational idea of inclusive education is based on deconstructing the power structures concerning gender, ethnicity and “race” and approval of differences in the pupils. Shifting the emphasis from the pupil to working on the learning environment has resulted in special education no longer being primarily separate special education tied to a certain place, but directing the teaching more towards individuality. The central dimension of intercultural competence of a teacher working in a multicultural class seems to be the attitudes and approaches to a different pupil; the teacher must be interculturally sensitive when facing children and young people from a foreign culture. Education and teaching affect every sector of the pupil’s well-being. Learning and learning results have a connection with teaching, education and well-being. Every sector is important for the going to school and integration of an immigrant pupil in need of special support. The basis of the study is the equality of opportunities and the humanistic idea of the human being in the Finnish education policy. The immigrant pupils selected for the study represented the following language groups: Arabian, Albanian, Somali, Russian and Vietnamese. In the four special education schools, the number of immigrant pupils belonging to these language groups (2004) totalled 104. A total of 89 pupils i.e. 86% answered the questionnaire, which is sufficient considering the generalisation of the study. Although this is basically a quantitative study, the interviewing method was used in part of the study, because the questionnaires were in Finnish and consequently, it was difficult for some immigrant pupils to understand them. Understanding the questions was also affected by the fact that the age distribution in the study was very wide (7–18). According to the results of the study, the immigrants felt that the biggest drawbacks in general education were their inability to speak Finnish and lack of concentration. The actual process of being transferred to a special education class remained unclear for immigrant pupils, and they could do very little about the transfer themselves. The results show that immigrant pupils coped well in special education school; they felt that their learning ability and concentration improved in the small groups of the special education school. They considered the individual support given in the special education schools to be useful. The lower-grade immigrant pupils had a more positive attitude towards special education school than the upper-grade immigrant pupils. In all the special education schools the immigrant pupils experienced that they were in a good position in the class; girls felt this even a little more strongly than boys. The teacher-pupil-relationship was felt to be good. School bullying being so common was a negative feature experienced by immigrant pupils, who were often targets or bullies themselves. Immigrant pupils believed in their success at school and in the opportunities offered by special education schools. Generally they were of the opinion that pupils are not labelled by special school; however, upper-grade immigrant pupils were more hesitant than lower-grade immigrant pupils. This study aimed at bringing out the immigrant pupils’ own opinions. Teaching immigrant pupils in special education schools has not been very much studied in Finland, which made the topic new and even more challenging.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on rakentaa toimiva ympäristöjärjestelmä Thermo Fisher Scientific Oy:lle. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on myös löytää kahdelle täysin erilaiselle toiminnalle yhtenäinen ympäristöjärjestelmä, jonka avulla pystytään ottamaan huomioon molempien toimipaikkojen hieman erilaiset vaatimukset. Lisäksi tavoitteena on muodostaa ympäristöjärjestelmälle oma organisaatio, jonka avulla ympäristöjärjestelmän integrointi yrityksen prosesseihin voidaan suorittaa sujuvasti. Aluksi tutkimusongelmaa lähestytään teoreettisesta näkökulmasta,jossa tarkastellaan ympäristöjärjestelmän historiaa, rakennetta, etuja sekä ISO 14001–standardin rakennetta ja sen etenemistä ympäristöjärjestelmän rakentamisen yhteydessä aina kolmannen osapuolen sertifiointiin asti. Empiria osa alkaa alustavalla ympäristökatselmuksella, jossa selvitetään ympäristöasioiden hoidon nykytaso ja luodaan pohja koko ympäristöjärjestelmän luomiselle, jonka vankimpana perustana on ympäristöpolitiikka. Johdon hyväksymä ympäristöpolitiikka varmistaa johdon sitoutumisen järjestelmään. Ympäristöjärjestelmän toimintarakenteen muodostaminen kahdelle erilaiselle toiminnalle onnistui tutkimuksessa kiitettävästi. Se miten ympäristöjärjestelmä toimii todellisuudessa, tullaan näkemään käytännön kokemuksien yhteydessä.

The evolution of reproductive division of labour and social life in social insects has lead to the emergence of several life-history traits and adaptations typical of larger organisms: social insect colonies can reach masses of several kilograms, they start reproducing only when they are several years old, and can live for decades. These features and the monopolization of reproduction by only one or few individuals in a colony should affect molecular evolution by reducing the effective population size. We tested this prediction by analysing genome-wide patterns of coding sequence polymorphism and divergence in eusocial vs. noneusocial insects based on newly generated RNA-seq data. We report very low amounts of genetic polymorphism and an elevated ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous changes - a marker of the effective population size - in four distinct species of eusocial insects, which were more similar to vertebrates than to solitary insects regarding molecular evolutionary processes. Moreover, the ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous substitutions was positively correlated with the level of social complexity across ant species. These results are fully consistent with the hypothesis of a reduced effective population size and an increased genetic load in eusocial insects, indicating that the evolution of social life has important consequences at both the genomic and population levels.

Tant la pobresa com la marginalitat formen part de la societat al llarg de tota la història, però, en cada època, han rebut tractaments diferents. El segle XVII és un període caracteritzat per una greu crisi econòmica, social i política, on la pobresa, la marginalitat i, també, la delinqüència cal que siguin considerats com tres factors de gran importància i incidència en la vida de les persones. La intenció d’aquest estat de la qüestió és analitzar les característiques i la tipologia de pobresa i marginalitat que es donen al segle XVII a Espanya i com han estat analitzades a través de la historiografia del segle XX, fent especial incís en les aportacions recollides en manuals d’història moderna i en algunes obres de síntesi.

La relación entre historia, patrimonio y territorio, en unos espacios culturales de clara relevancia durante la Guerra Civil y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, permite reflexionar sobre algunas políticas públicas de memoria desarrolladas a raíz de la confluencia que se ha dado entre el Programa Memorial Democràtic impulsado por la Generalitat de Catalunya, la acción decidida de algunos ayuntamientos comprometidos en preservar la memoria histórica, el mundo académico representado por la Universidad y el asociacionismo civil.

Objetivo: El objetivo es presentar el proyecto de investigación cuyo propósito es conocer la evolución de la Educación para la salud (EpS) desde la antigüedad hasta la época contemporánea, con el fin de identificar y comprender la génesis y construcción de la disciplina. Método: Se trata de un estudio cualitativo histórico enmarcado en el paradigma interpretativo etnohistórico y hermenéutico. Los pilares básicos en que se enmarca conceptualmente, son la Educación, la Persona, grupo o comunidad y la Salud. El espacio social, es aquel en que los grupos sociales vivían y el estructural-temporal, las épocas históricas: prehistoria, antigüedad (culturas antiguas y clásicas), edad media, renacimiento y contemporánea hasta pasada la Guerra Civil española (1940). El sujeto de estudio es la EpS a partir de los elementos que la conforman: el concepto de salud, las creencias, los conocimientos sanitarios, las intervenciones y los recursos educativos para la salud de les personas y los grupos sociales en cada una de las épocas históricas a estudio. Las fuentes utilizadas son las indirectas, materiales-arqueológicas y culturales: verbales (escritas) y no verbales (semiológicas/audiovisuales) y las no seriadas. La recogida de información a través de técnicas de investigación histórica cualitativa: la observación y análisis documental bibliográfico, iconográfico de archivos, prensa, publicaciones oficiales, textos bibliográficos y técnicas textuales-filosóficas: análisis de contenido y crítica histórica. El análisis de la información será cronológico y mediante una clasificación por temáticas y periodos históricos.

Ante las dificultades que presenta la concepción del tiempo para la didáctica de la historia es necesario aportar herramientas o estrategias que faciliten los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Aquí se proponen dos estrategias combinadas basadas, por un lado, en introducir a los niños desde edades tempranas en la historia a través de marcas temporales asociadas a una tipología de objetos (en este caso la indumentaria), enseñarles en etapas posteriores a relacionarlas entre sí y con otros conceptos históricos de creciente complejidad, y, por otro lado, en facilitar su aprendizaje a través de la creación de mapas conceptuales.

Tämän työn tavoitteena on kuvata erään yrityksen erään tulosyksikön toiminnanohjausjärjestelmän käytön laajentamista. Työssä on pyritty kehittämään tulosyksikön toimintaprosesseja sekä keskitytty erityisesti tuotantoprosessin ja sen ohjauksen kehittämiseen. Työn alussa on esitelty kohdeyritys ja kohdeorganisaatio, parkettiosasto, sekä toiminnanohjausjärjestelmien historiaa, käsitettä ja rakennetta. Työn teoriaosuudessa on käsitelty tuotannonsuunnittelun ja -ohjauksen periaatteita sekä toiminnanohjausjärjestelmän käyttöönottoprojektin suunnittelua. Työn käytännönosuudessa kuvataan toiminnanohjausjärjestelmän laajentamisen vaikutuksia organisaation toimintoihin, laitteistoarkkitehtuuriin, toiminnanohjausjärjestelmän käyttöön sekä esitetään ajoitettu käyttöönottosuunnitelma. Työn tuloksena on yksityiskohtainen kuvaus käyttöönottosuunnitelmas-ta. Yhtenä työn keskeisimmistä johtopäätöksistä voidaan todeta, että monet tyypillisimmistä projektin epäonnistumiseen johtaneista syistä tai riskeistä ovat ennakoitavissa huolellisella projektin etukäteissuunnittelulla.

Au sein de la population générale, de plus en plus de personnes arborent des piercings, en particulier parmi les jeunes adultes. Hormis les réactions inflammatoires et les infections locales, les complications liées à ces piercings sont méconnues. Les personnes ne sont en général pas informées des risques avant de réaliser un piercing et leurs antécédents, traitements médicamenteux ou comorbidités éventuelles, sont largement négligés par les personnes qui réalisent le geste. Les complications sont le plus souvent locales et bénignes, mais des complications sérieuses et parfois mortelles ont été décrites dans la littérature. Cet article propose une revue des problématiques possibles auxquelles pourrait être confronté un médecin de premier recours, face à un patient qui souhaiterait réaliser un piercing ou présenterait des complications suite à la mise en place d'un tel dispositif. The trend of body piercing has grown in popularity in the past decade within the general population and especially among young adults. Complications of body piercing include local inflammation and infections, but severe complications are also possible and largely underestimated. People are usually not aware of the risks before making a piercing, and their medical history, medication and comorbidities are largely neglected by the people who realise the piercing. This article presents a review of the complications that a primary care physician may observe, for a patient who wishes to make a piercing, or presents complications due to the implementation of such a device.
