The substitution of petroleum-based fuels with those from renewable sources has gained momentum worldwide. A UV-vis experiment for the quantitative analysis of biofuels (bioethanol or biodiesel) in (petroleum-based) diesel oil has been developed. Before the experiment, students were given a quiz on biofuels, and then they were asked to suggest a suitable UV-vis experiment for the quantification of biofuels in diesel oil. After discussing the results of the quiz, the experiment was conducted. This included the determination of lambda(max) of the medium-dependent, that is, solvatochromic, visible absorption band of the probe 2,6-bis[4-(tert-butyl)phenyl]-4-{2,4,6-tris[4-(tert-butyl)phenyl]pyridinium-1-yl}phenolate as a function of fuel composition. The students appreciated that the subject was linked to a daily situation and that they were asked to suggest the experiment. This experiment served to introduce the phenomena of solvation and solvatochromism.

The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was investigated using PtSnCe/C electrocatalysts in different mass ratios (72:23:5, 68:22:10 and 64:21:15) that were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the particles ranged in size from approximately 2 to 5 nm. Changes in the net parameters observed for Pt suggest the incorporation of Sn and Ce into the Pt crystalline network with the formation of an alloy between Pt, Sn and/or Ce. Among the PtSnCe catalysts investigated, the 68:22:10 composition showed the highest activity toward ethanol oxidation, and the current time curves obtained in the presence of ethanol in acidic media showed a current density 50% higher than that observed for commercial PtSn/C (E-Tek). During the experiments performed on single direct ethanol fuel cells, the power density for the PtSnCe/C 68:22:10 anode was nearly 40% higher than the one obtained using the commercial catalyst. Data from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the observed behavior for ethanol oxidation may be explained in terms of a double mechanism. The presence of Sn and Ce seems to favor CO oxidation, since they produce an oxygen-containing species to oxidize acetaldehyde to acetic acid. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. The catalytic activity of Ni/CeO(2)-Al(2)O(3) catalysts modified with noble metals (Pt, Ir, Pd and Ru) was investigated for the steam reform of ethanol and glycerol. The catalysts were characterized by the following techniques: Energy-dispersive X-ray, BET, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The results showed that the formation of inactive nickel aluminate was prevented by the presence of CeO(2) dispersed on alumina. The promoting effect of noble metals included a decrease in the reduction temperatures of NiO species interacting with the support, due to the hydrogen spillover effect. It was seen that the addition of noble metal stabilized the Ni sites in the reduced state along the reforming reaction, increasing the ethanol and glycerol conversions and decreasing the coke formation. The higher catalytic performance for the ethanol steam reforming at 600 degrees C and glycerol steam reforming was obtained for the NiPd and NiPt catalysts, respectively, which presented an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H(2) yield with reasonably low amounts of CO. The performance of La(2-x)Ce(x)Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O(4) perovskites as catalysts for the high temperature water-gas shift reaction (H T-W G S R) was investigated. The catalysts were characterized by EDS, XRD, BET surface area, TPR, and XANES. The results showed that all the perovskites exhibited the La(2)CuO(4) orthorhombic structure, so the Pechini method is suitable for the preparation of pure perovskite. However, the La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) perovskite alone, when calcined at 350/700 degrees C, also showed a (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure, which produced a surface area higher than the other perovskites. The perovskites that exhibited the best catalytic performance were those calcined at 350/700 degrees C and, among these, La(1.90)Ce(0.10)CuO(4) was outstanding, probably because of the high surface area associated with the presence of the (La(0.935)Ce(0.065))(2)CuO(4) perovskite with tetragonal structure and orthorhombic La(2)CuO(4) phase.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated on carbon-supported Pt-Co nanoparticle electrocatalysts with low Pt content in alkaline electrolyte. High resolution transmission electron microscopy, In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis evidenced large structural differences of the Pt-Co particles depending oil the route of the catalyst synthesis. It was demonstrated that although the Pt-Co materials contain low amounts of Pt, they show very good activities when the particles are formed by a Pt-rich shell and a Pt-Co core, which was obtained after submitting the electrocatalyst to a potential cycling in acid electrolyte. The high activity of this material was due to a major contribution from its higher surface area, as a result of the leaching of the Co atoms from the particle Surface. Furthermore, its high activity was ascribed to a minor contribution from the electronic interaction of the Pt atoms, at the particle surface, and the Co atoms located in the beneath layer, lowering the Pt cl-band center. As these electrocatalysts presented high activity for the ORR with low Pt content, the cost of the fuel cell cathodes could be lowered considerably. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The catalytic activity of Ni/La(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) Catalysts modified with noble metals(Pt and Pd) was investigated in the steam reforming of ethanol. The catalysts were characterized by ICP, S(BFT), X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure (XANES). The results showed that the formation of inactive nickel aluminate was prevented by the presence of La(2)O(3) dispersed on the alumina. The promoting effect of noble metals included a marked decrease in the reduction temperatures of NiO species interacting with the support. due to the hydrogen spillover effect, facilitating greatly the reduction of the promoted catalysts. it was seen that the addition of noble metal stabilized the Ni sites in the reduced state throughout the reaction, increasing ethanol conversion and decreasing coke formation, irrespective of the nature or loading of the noble metal. The effect of noble metal addition on the catalytic properties of Co/Al2O3 was evaluated for the steam reforming of methane. Co/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared with addition of different noble metals (Pt, Pd, Ru and Ir 0.3 wt.%) by a wetness impregnation method and characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) of the reduced catalysts. The UV-vis spectra of the samples indicate that, most likely, large amounts of the supported cobalt form Co species in which cobalt is in octahedral and tetrahedral symmetries. No peaks assigned to cobalt species from aluminate were found for the promoted and unpromoted cobalt catalysts. TPO analyses showed that the addition of the noble metals on the Co/Al2O3 catalyst leads to a more stable metallic state and less susceptible to the deactivation process during the reforming reaction. The Co/Al2O3 promoted with Pt showed higher stability and selectivity for H(2)production during the methane steam reforming. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Catalysts with various nickel loads were prepared on supports of ZrO2, ZrO2-Y2O3 and ZrO2-CaO, characterized by XRD and TPR and tested for activity in ethanol steam reforming. XRD of the supports identified the monoclinic crystalline phase in the ZrO2 and cubic phases in the ZrO2-Y2O3 and ZrO2-CaO supports. In the catalysts, the nickel impregnated on the supports was identified as the NiO phase. In the TPR analysis, peaks were observed showing the NiO phase having different interactions with the supports. In the catalytic tests, practically all the catalysts achieved 100% ethanol conversion, H-2 yield was near 70% and the gaseous concentrations of the other co-products varied in accordance with the equilibrium among them, affected principally by the supports. It was observed that when the ZrO2 was modified with Y2O3 and CaO, there were big changes in the CO and CO2 concentrations, which were attributed to the rise in the number of oxygen vacancies, permitting high-oxygen mobility and affecting the gaseous equilibrium. The liquid products analysis showed a low selectivity to liquid co-products during the reforming reactions. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

6 x 8cm(2) electrochromic devices (ECDs) with the configuration K-glass/EC-layer/electrotype/ion-storage (IS) layer/K-glass, have been assembled using Nb2O5:Mo EC layers, a (CeO2)(0.81)-TiO2 IS-layer and a new gelatin electrolyte containing Li+ ions. The structure of the electrolyte is X-ray amorphous. Its ionic conductivity passed by a maximum of 1.5 x 10(-5) S/CM for a lithium concentration of 0.3g/15ml. The value increases with temperature and follows an Arrhenius law with an activation energy of 49.5 kJ/mol. All solid-state devices show a reversible gray coloration, a long-term stability of more than 25,000 switching cycles (+/- 2.0 V/90 s), a transmission change at 550 nm between 60% (bleached state) and 40% (colored state) corresponding to a change of the optical density (Delta OD = 0. 15) with a coloration efficiency increasing from 10cm(2)/C (initial cycle) to 23cm(2)/C (25,000th cycle). Ordered intermetallic phases of Pt with several transition metals have been prepared and their electrocatalytic properties studied. In light of these tests it is proposed that these catalysts could be used as electrodes in fuel cells, as they combine an excellent capacity to adsorb organic fuels at the Pt sites with low susceptibility to being poisoned by intermediates and reaction products at the transition-metal sites. An experimental procedure used to obtain the four intermetallic phases Pt-M (M = Mn, Pb, Sb and Sn) is described. The phases thus produced were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with surface analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The data thus obtained support the conclusion that the method described here is highly effective for the preparation of Pt-M phases featuring a range of structural and electronic modifications that will allow a useful relation to be established between their physicochemical properties and predicted electrocatalytic activity. The catalytic performance of Co/Al2O3 catalysts promoted with small amounts noble metals (Pt, Pd, Ru, Ir) for steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) has been investigated. The catalysts were characterized by the energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, BET surface area, X-ray absorption fine structure and temperature reduction programmed techniques. The results showed that the promoting effect of noble metals included a marked decrease of the reduction temperatures of both Co3O4 and cobalt surface species interacting with the support due to the hydrogen spillover effect, leading to a significant increase of the reducibilities of the promoted catalysts. The better catalytic performance for the ethanol steam reforming at 400 degrees C was obtained for the CoRu/Al2O3 catalyst, which presented an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H, selectivity and the reasonable low CO formation. Cobalt catalysts were prepared on supports of SiO(2) and gamma-Al(2)O(3) by the impregnation method, using a solution of Co precursor in methanol. The samples were characterized by XRD, TPR, and Raman spectroscopy and tested in ethanol steam reforming. According to the XRD results, impregnation with the methanolic solution led to smaller metal crystallites than with aqueous solution, on the SiO(2) support. On gamma-Al(2)O(3), all the samples exhibited small crystallites, with either solvent, due to a higher Co-support interaction that inhibits the reduction of Co species. The TPR results were consistent with XRD results and the samples supported on gamma-Al(2)O(3) showed a lower degree of reduction. In the steam reforming of ethanol, catalysts supported on SiO(2) and prepared with the methanolic solution showed the best H(2), CO(2) and CO selectivity. Those supported on gamma-Al(2)O(3) showed lower H(2) selectivity. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

CuO/CeO(2), CuO/Al(2)O(3) and CuO/CeO(2)-Al(2)O(3) catalysts, with CuO loading varying from 1 to 5 wt.%, were prepared by the citrate method and applied to the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide in a reaction medium containing large amounts of hydrogen (PROX-CO). The compounds were characterized ex situ by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area measurements, temperature-programmed reduction and temperature-programmed reduction of oxidized surfaces; XANES-PROX in situ experiments were also carried out to study the copper oxidation state under PROX-CO conditions. These analyses showed that in the reaction medium the Cu(0) is present as dispersed particles. On the ceria, these metallic particles are smaller and more finely dispersed, resulting in a stronger metal-support interaction than in CuO/Al(2)O(3) or CuO/CeO(2)-Al(2)O(3) catalysts, providing higher PROX-CO activity and better selectivity in the conversion of CO to CO(2) despite the greater BET area presented by samples supported on alumina. It is also shown that the lower CuO content, the higher metal dispersion and consequently the catalytic activity. The redox properties of the ceria support also contributed to catalytic performance. We report in this paper the occurrence of potential oscillations in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a Pd-Pt/C anode, fed with H(2)/100 ppm CO, and operated at 30 degrees C. We demonstrate that the use of Pd-Pt/C anode enables the emergence of dynamic instabilities in a PEMFC. Oscillations are characterized by the presence of very high oscillation amplitude, ca. 0.8 V. which is almost twice that observed in a PEMFC with a Pt-Ru/C anode under similar conditions. The effects of the H(2)/CO flow rate and cell current density on the oscillatory dynamics were investigated and the mechanism rationalized in terms of the CO oxidation and adsorption processes. We also discuss the fundamental aspects concerning the operation of a PEMFC under oscillatory regime in terms of the benefit resulting from the higher average power output. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The performance of La(2-x)M(x)CuO(4) perovskites (where M = Ce, Ca or Sr) as catalysts for the water-gas shift reaction was investigated at 290 degrees C and 360 degrees C. The catalysts were characterized by EDS, XRD, N(2) adsorption-desorption, XPS and XANES. The XRD results showed that all the perovskites exhibited a single phase (the presence of perovskite structure), suggesting the incorporation of metals in the perovskite structure. The XPS and XANES results showed the presence of Cu(2+) on the surface. The perovskites that exhibited the best catalytic performance were La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) perovslcites, with CO conversions of 85%-90%. Moreover, these perovskites have higher surface areas and larger amounts of Cu on the surface. And Ce has a higher filled energy level than the other metals, increasing the energy of the valence band of Ce and providing more electrons for the reaction. Besides, the La(1.80)Ca(0.20)CuO(4) perovskite showed a good catalytic performance.
