The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the trans-enamel and transdentinal cytotoxic effects of two in-office tooth bleaching techniques that employ bleaching gels containing 20% and 38% of H2 O2 on cultured odontoblast-like cell line (MDPC-23). Sixty enamel/dentin discs were obtained from bovine central incisors and placed individually in artificial pulp chambers. Six groups were formed according to the following enamel treatments: G1- 20% H2 O2 (1 application); G2- 20% H2 O2 (2 applications); G3- 38% H2 O2 (1 application); G4- 38% H2 O2 (2 applications); G5- 38% H2 O2 (3 applications); and G6- control (no treatment). In G1 and G2, the bleaching gel was left in contact with the enamel surface for 45 min in each application. However, in G3, G4, and G5 the bleaching gel was applied for only 10 min per application. After the last application, the extracts were collected and applied on previously cultured cells (30.000 cells/cm2 ) for 24 h. Cell metabolism was evaluated by the MTT assay and cell morphology was analysed by scanning electron microscopy. Cell metabolism decreased by 96.29%; 96.11%; 96.42%; 95.62%; and 97.18% in G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5, respectively. All treated groups differed significantly from non-treated control group (G6) (p < 0.05). However, the difference in cell metabolism among treated groups was not significant statistically. In addition, significant morphological cell alterations were observed in all treated groups. Under the tested experimental conditions, the extracts collected after both tooth bleaching techniques evaluated in this study caused severe toxic effects on cultured odontoblast-like cell MDPC-23.

Experiments of continuous alcoholic fermentation of sugarcane juice with flocculating yeast recycle were conducted in a system of two 0.22-L tower bioreactors in series, operated at a range of dilution rates (D (1) = D (2) = 0.27-0.95 h(-1)), constant recycle ratio (alpha = F (R) /F = 4.0) and a sugar concentration in the feed stream (S (0)) around 150 g/L. The data obtained in these experimental conditions were used to adjust the parameters of a mathematical model previously developed for the single-stage process. This model considers each of the tower bioreactors as a perfectly mixed continuous reactor and the kinetics of cell growth and product formation takes into account the limitation by substrate and the inhibition by ethanol and biomass, as well as the substrate consumption for cellular maintenance. The model predictions agreed satisfactorily with the measurements taken in both stages of the cascade. The major differences with respect to the kinetic parameters previously estimated for a single-stage system were observed for the maximum specific growth rate, for the inhibition constants of cell growth and for the specific rate of substrate consumption for cell maintenance. Mathematical models were validated and used to simulate alternative operating conditions as well as to analyze the performance of the two-stage process against that of the single-stage process.

In experimental conditions, cutting forces were studied during turning of green alumina billets, including their correlation with surface aspects of the workpiece. The correlation between cutting power and the removal rate are important parameters for defining the design of ceramic products, since inadequate parameters can produce excessive surface damage to the workpiece. This study examined the forces obtained during turning of alumina workpieces with 99.8% purity in their green state, by means of a three-point dynamometer, evaluating the cutting, feed and depth forces, using a cermet tool under constant machining conditions. Variables were compared with the forces, including surface finish, tool wear and temperature during machining. In the study, it was found that the depth of cut had no significant effect on the surface quality, and the cutting speed and feed influencing the finish. However, preliminary tests for selecting the cutting conditions showed that unsuitables cutting speeds and feeds generate severe damage to the workpiece surface. The best condition was 1.00 mm depth of cut, and the forces increasedfor with each pass performed, with the feed force the variable with greatest increases in relation to the cutting and depth forces, and wear of the cutting tool directly influenced the surface finish, generated by the highly abrasive nature of the alumina particles of the green compact. It is emphasized that the alumina in its green state showed high abrasive effect on the cutting tool during the turning process and the surface finishing of the green workpiece had a direct influence on the sintered workpiece.

In order to evaluate some factors likely to be involved in the maternal and fetal growth impairment due to alimentary protein deficiency, the circulating levels of triiodothyronine (T 3) and thyroxine (T 4) were studied in 4 young (45-day-old) female rat groups: control and malnourished, both nonpregnant and pregnant; similarly schedules groups were studied using adult (100-day-old) rats. Circulating levels of T 4 were higher in nonpregnant, malnourished young rats in their corresponding controls. T 3 levels were higher in young malnourished animals and lower in adult malnourished animals, nonpregnant or pregnant, as compared to controls. Pups from young malnourished mothers showed significantly lower birth weights than those from controls. The present results suggest that there are age differences in thyroid function, as affected by protein-calorie malnutrition in pregnant and non-pregnant rats. On the other hand, the circulating thyroid hormone levels were not importantly affected by the mother dietary protein restriction under our experimental conditions.

The purpose of this study was to compare the microhardness of four indirect composite resins. Forty cylindrical samples were prepared according to the manufacturer s recommendations using a Teflon mold. Ten specimens were produced from each tested material, constituting four groups (n=10) as follows: G1 - Artglass; G2 - Sinfony; G3 - Solidex; G4 - Targis. Microhardness was determined by the Vickers indentation technique with a load of 300g for 10 seconds. Four indentations were made on each sample, determining the mean microhardness values for each specimen. Descriptive statistics data for the experimental conditions were: G1 - Artglass (mean ±standard deviation: 55.26 ± 1.15HVN; median: 52.6); G2 - Sinfony (31.22 ± 0.65HVN; 31.30); G3 - Solidex (52.25 ± 1.55HVN; 52.60); G4 - Targis (72.14 ± 2.82HVN; 73.30). An exploratory data analysis was performed to determine the most appropriate statistical test through: (I) Levene's for homogeneity of variances; (II) ANOVA on ranks (Kruskal-Wallis); (III) Dunn's multiple comparison test (0.05). Targis presented the highest microhardness values while Sinfony presented the lowest. Artglass and Solidex were found as intermediate materials. These results indicate that distinct mechanical properties may be observed at specific materials. The composition of each material as well as variations on polymerization methods are possibly responsibles for the difference found in microhardness. Therefore, indirect composite resin materials that guarantee both good esthetics and adequate mechanical properties may be considered as substitutes of natural teeth.
