Highly delocalized molecular frameworks with intense charge transfer transitions, known as push-pull systems, are of central interest in many areas of chemistry, as is the case of nitrophenyl-triazene derivatives. The 1,3-bis(2-nitrophenyl)triazene and 1,3-bis(4-nitrophenyl)triazene were investigated by electronic (UV-Vis) and resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopies. The bichromophoric behavior of 1,3-bis(4-nitrophenyl)triazene anion opens the possibility of tuning with visible radiation, two distinct electronic states. The RR profiles of nitrophenyl-triazene derivatives clearly show that the first allowed electronic state can be assigned to a charge transfer from the ring pi system to the NO2 moiety (ca 520 nm), while the second, as a charge transfer from N-3(-) to the aromatic ring (ca 390 nm). In the para-substituted derivative, a more efficient electron transfer and a greater energy separation between the two excited states are observed. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The electronic (UV-vis) and resonance Raman (RR) spectra of a series of para-substituted trans-beta-nitrostyrenes were investigated to determine the influence of the electron donating properties of the substituent (X = H, NO2, COOH, Cl, OCH3, OH, N(CH3)(2), and O-) on the extent of the charge transfer to the electron-withdrawing NO2 group directly linked to the ethylenic (C=C) unit. The Raman spectra and quantum chemical calculations show clearly the correlation of the electron donating power of the X group with the wavenumbers of the nu(s)(NO2) and nu (C=C)(sty) normal modes. In conditions of resonance with the lowest excited electronic state, one observes for X = OH and N(CH3)2 that the symmetric stretching of the NO2. nu(s)(NO2), is the most substantially enhanced mode, whereas for X = O-, the chromophore is extended over the whole molecule, with substantial enhancement of several carbon backbone modes. BACKGROUND: Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of banana fragments during ripening show an increase on the water transverse relaxation time (T(2)) and a decrease in water self-diffusion coefficient (D). As T(2) and D are normally directly correlated, we studied these two properties in intact bananas during ripening, in an attempt to rule out the effect of injury on the apparent discrepancies in the behavior of T(2) and D. RESULTS: The results show that injury in bananas causes a decrease in T(2) of the water in vacuoles (T(2vac)). They also show that T(2vac) increased and D decreased during ripening, ruling out the injury effect. To explain the apparent discrepancies, we propose a new hypothesis for the increase in T(2) values, based on the reduction of Fe(3+) ions to Fe(2+) by galacturonic acid, produced by the hydrolysis of pectin and a decrease in internal oxygen concentration during ripening. CONCLUSION: As injury alters T(2) values it is necessary to use intact bananas to study relaxation times during ripening. The novel interpretation for the increase in T(2vac) based on reduction of Fe(+3) and O(2) concentration is an alternative mechanism to that based on the hydrolysis of starch in amyloplasts. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are applied in stem cell labeling because of their high magnetic susceptibility as compared with ordinary paramagnetic species, their low toxicity, and their ease of magnetic manipulation. The present work is the study of CD133(+) stem cell labeling by SPIONs coupled to a specific antibody (AC133), resulting in the antigenic labeling of the CD133+ stem cell, and a method was developed for the quantification of the SPION content per cell, necessary for molecular imaging optimization. Flow cytometry analysis established the efficiency of the selection process and helped determine that the CD133 cells selected by chromatographic affinity express the transmembrane glycoprotein CD133. The presence of antibodies coupled to the SPION, expressed in the cell membrane, was observed by transmission electron microscopy. Quantification of the SPION concentration in the marked cells using the ferromagnetic resonance technique resulted in a value of 1.70 x 10 (13) mol iron (9.5 pg) or 7.0 x 10 (6) nanoparticles per cell ( the measurement was carried out in a volume of 2 mu L containing about 6.16 x 10 5 pg iron, equivalent to 4.5 x 10 (11) SPIONs). Recently Lukierski et al. [1] defined a κ-deformed Poincaré algebra which is characterized by having the energy-momentum and angular momentum sub-algebras not deformed. Further Biedenharn et al. [2] showed that on gauging the κ-deformed electron with the electromagnetic field, one can set a limit on the allowed value of the deformation parameter ∈ ≡ 1/κ < 1 fm. We show that one gets Regge like angular excitations, J, of the mesons, non-strange and strange baryons, with a value of ∈ ∼ 0.082 fm and predict a flattening with J of the corresponding trajectories. The Regge fit improves on including deformation, particularly for the baryon spectrum.

We report cross sections for elastic electron scattering by gas phase glycine (neutral form), obtained with the Schwinger multichannel method. The present results are the first obtained with a new implementation that combines parallelization with OpenMP directives and pseudopotentials. The position of the well known pi* shape resonance ranged from 2.3 eV to 2.8 eV depending on the polarization model and conformer. For the most stable isomer, the present result (2.4 eV) is in fair agreement with electron transmission spectroscopy assignments (1.93 +/- 0.05 eV) and available calculations. Our results also point out a shape resonance around 9.5 eV in the A' symmetry that would be weakly coupled to vibrations of the hydroxyl group. Since electron attachment to a broad and lower lying sigma* orbital located on the OH bond has been suggested the underlying mechanism leading to dissociative electron attachment at low energies, we sought for a shape resonance around similar to 4 eV. Though we obtained cross sections with the target molecule at the equilibrium geometry and with stretched OH bond lengths, least-squares fits to the calculated eigenphase sums did not point out signatures of this anion state (though, in principle, it could be hidden in the large background). The low energy (similar to 1 eV) integral cross section strongly scales as the bond length is stretched, and this could indicate a virtual state pole, since dipole supported bound states are not expected at the geometries addressed here. The interaction of formamide and the two transition states of its amide group rotation with one, two, or three water molecules was studied in vacuum. Great differences between the electronic structure of formamide in its most stable form and the electronic structure of the transition states were noticed. Intermolecular interactions were intense, especially in the cases where the solvent interacted with the amide and the carbonyl groups simultaneously. In the transition states, the interaction between the lone pair of nitrogen and the water molecule becomes important. With the aid of the natural bond orbitals, natural resonance theory, and electron localization function (ELF) analyses an increase in the resonance of planar formamide with the addition of successive water molecules was observed. Such observation suggests that the hydrogen bonds in the formamidewater complexes may have some covalent character. These results are also supported by the quantitative ELF analyses. We report integral cross sections for elastic electron scattering by the lignin subunits phenol, guaiacol, and p-coumaryl alcohol. Our calculations employed the Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials and indicate three to four pi* shape resonances for each of these systems, suggesting that low-energy electrons could efficiently transfer energy into the lignin matrix. We also discuss dissociation mechanisms based on the calculated cross sections, available experimental data, virtual orbital analysis, and the knowledge on electron interactions with biomolecules. Our results point out a physical-chemical basis for electron-driven biomass delignification. The latter would be an essential step for efficient biofuel production from lignocellulosic materials.

Complexes of the type {[(pyS)Ru(NH3)(4)](2)-mu-L}(n), where pyS = 4-mercaptopyridine, L = 4,4'-dithiodipyridine (pySSpy), pyrazine (pz) and 1,4-dicyanobenzene (DCB), and n = +4 and +5 for fully reduced and mixed-valence complexes, respectively, were synthesized and characterized. Electrochemical data showed that there is electron communication between the metal centers with comproportionation constants of 33.2, 1.30 x 10(8) and 5.56 x 10(5) for L = pySSpy, pz and DCB, respectively. It was also observed that the electronic coupling between the metal centers is affected by the p-back-bonding interaction toward the pyS ligand. Raman spectroscopy showed a dependence of the intensity of the vibrational modes on the exciting radiations giving support to the assignments of the electronic transitions. The degree of electron communication between the metal centers through the bridging ligands suggests that these systems can be molecular wire materials.

A low energy electron may attach to a molecule, forming a metastable resonance, which may dissociate into a stable anion and a neutral radical. Chloromethane has been a good target for dissociative electron attachment studies, since it is a small molecule with a clear dissociative ‘sigma*’ shape resonance. We present potential energy curves for CH3Cl and its anion, as a function of the C-Cl distance. Due to the resonant nature of the anion, a correct description requires a treatment based on scattering calculations. In order to compute elastic cross sections and phase shifts we employed the Schwinger multichannel method, implemented with pseudopotentials of Bachelet, Hamann and Schlüter, at the static-exchange plus polarization approximation. At the equilibrium geometry, the resonance was found arround 3.3 eV, in accordance to experience. The incoming electron is captured by a ‘sigma*’ orbital located at the C-Cl bond, which will relax in the presence of this extra electron. We took this bond as the reaction coordinate, and performed several scattering calculations for a series of nuclear conformations. The phase shift obtained in each calculation was fitted by a two component function, consisting in the usual Breit-Wigner profile, which captures the resonant character, and a second order polynomial in the wave number, which accounts for the background contribution. That way, we obtained position and width of the resonance, which allowed us to build the potential energy curve. For larger distances, the anion becomes stable and usual electronic structure calculations suffice. Furthermore, the existence of a dipole-bound anion state is revealed when we employed a set of very diffuse functions. The knowledge on the behaviour of the neutral and anionic electronic states helps us in elucidating how the dissociation takes place.

Single and double strand breaks in DNA can be caused by low-energy electrons, the most abundant secondary products of the interaction of ionizing radiation to the biological matter. Attachment of these electrons to biomolecules lead to the formation of transient negative ions (TNIs) [1], often referred to as resonances, a process that may lead to significant vibrational excitation and dissociation. In the present study, we employ the parallel version [2] of the Schwinger Multichannel Method implemented with pseudopotentials [3] to obtain the shape resonance spectrum of cytosine-guanine (CG) pairs, with special attention to π* transient anion states. Recent experimental studies pointed out a quasi-continuum vibrational excitation spectrum for electron collisions against formic acid dimers [4], suggesting that electron attachment into π* valence orbitals could induce proton transfer in these dimers. In addition, our previous studies on the shape resonance spectra of the hydrogen-bonded complexes comprising formic acid and formamide units indicated interesting electron delocalization (localization) effects arising from the presence (absence) of inversion symmetry centers in the complexes [5]. In the present work, we extend the studies on hydrogen-bonded complexes to the CG pair, where localization of ¼¤ anions would be expected, based on the previous results. References [1]. B. We report on the shape resonance spectra of uracil, 5-fluorouracil, and 5-chlorouracil, as obtained from fixed-nuclei elastic scattering calculations performed with the Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials. Our results are in good agreement with the available electron transmission spectroscopy data, and support the existence of three π* resonances in uracil and 5-fluorouracil. As expected, the anion states are more stable in the substituted molecules than in uracil. Since the stabilization is stronger in 5-chlorouracil, the lowest π* resonance in this system becomes a bound anion state. The present results also support the existence of a low-lying σ ∗ CCl shape resonance in 5- chlorouracil. Exploratory calculations performed at selected C–Cl bond lengths suggest that the σ ∗ CCl resonance could couple to the two lowest π* states, giving rise to a very rich dissociation dynamics. These facts would be compatible with the complex branching of the dissociative electron attachment cross sections, even though we cannot discuss any details of the vibration dynamics based only on the present fixed-nuclei results.

Atomic physics plays an important role in determining the evolution stages in a wide range of laboratory and cosmic plasmas. Therefore, the main contribution to our ability to model, infer and control plasma sources is the knowledge of underlying atomic processes. Of particular importance are reliable low temperature dielectronic recombination (DR) rate coefficients. This thesis provides systematically calculated DR rate coefficients of lithium-like beryllium and sodium ions via ∆n = 0 doubly excited resonant states. The calculations are based on complex-scaled relativistic many-body perturbation theory in an all-order formulation within the single- and double-excitation coupled-cluster scheme, including radiative corrections. Comparison of DR resonance parameters (energy levels, autoionization widths, radiative transition probabilities and strengths) between our theoretical predictions and the heavy-ion storage rings experiments (CRYRING-Stockholm and TSRHeidelberg) shows good agreement. The intruder state problem is a principal obstacle for general application of the coupled-cluster formalism on doubly excited states. Thus, we have developed a technique designed to avoid the intruder state problem. It is based on a convenient partitioning of the Hilbert space and reformulation of the conventional set of pairequations. The general aspects of this development are discussed, and the effectiveness of its numerical implementation (within the non-relativistic framework) is selectively illustrated on autoionizing doubly excited states of helium.
