New photonic crystal fiber designs are presented and numerically investigated in order to improve the state of art of high power fiber lasers. The focus of this work is targeted on the region of 2 μm laser emission, which is of high interest due to its eye-safe nature and due to the large amount of applications permitted. Thulium doped fiber amplifiers are suitable for emitting in this region. Different fiber designs have been proposed, both flexible and rod-type, with the aim to enlarge mode area while maintaining robust single mode operation. The analysis of thermal effects, caused by the high thulium quantum defect, have been taken in consideration. Solutions to counteract issues derived by detrimental thermal effects have been implemented.

Respiratory methods to estimate the amount of C in the soil microbial biomass and the relative contributions of prokaryotes and eukaryotes in the biomass were used to evaluate the influence of pesticides on the soil microflora. Experiments were conducted with 5 and 50 micrograms per gram of three fungicides, captan, thiram and verdesan. At 5 micrograms per gram they caused significant decreases (40%) in the biomass; the organomercury fungicide verdesan also caused a shift from fungal to bacterial dominance. Within 8 days, biomass in captan- and thiram-amended soils had recovered to that of controls. Although the fungal to bacterial balance was restored in verdesan-amended soils, biomass recovery was not complete. At 50 micrograms per gram the fungicides caused long-term decreases in the biomass and altered the relative proportions of the bacterial and fungal populations. Verdesan had the greatest effect on soil microbial biomass and competition.

The crustose lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum (L.) DC. comprises yellow-green lichenized areolae which develop and grow on the surface of a non-lichenized fungal hypothallus, the latter extending beyond the edge of the areolae to form a marginal ring. The hypothallus advances very slowly and the considerable longevity of R. geographicum, especially in Arctic and Alpine environments, has been exploited by geologists in dating the exposure age of rock surfaces (lichenometry). This review explores various aspects of the biology of R. geographicum including: (1) structure and symbionts, (2) lichenization, (3) development of areolae, (4) radial growth rates (RaGR), (5) growth physiology, (6) changes in RaGR with thallus size (growth ratesize curve), (7) maturity and senescence, and (8) aspects of ecology. Lichenization occurs when fungal hyphae become associated with a compatible species of the alga Trebouxia, commonly found free-living on the substratum. Similarly, 'primary' areolae develop from free-living algal cells trapped by the advancing hypothallus. The shape of the growth rate-size curve of R. geographicum is controversial but may exhibit a phase of decreasing growth in larger thalli. Low rates of translocation of carbohydrate to the hypothallus together with allocation for stress resistance results in very slow RaGR, a low demand for nutrients, hence, the ability of R. geographicum to colonize more extreme environments. Several aspects of the biology of R. geographicum have implications for lichenometry including early development, mortality rates, the shape of the growth-rate size curve, and competition. © The Author(s) 2012.

Linear typing schemes can be used to guarantee non-interference and so the soundness of in-place update with respect to a functional semantics. But linear schemes are restrictive in practice, and more restrictive than necessary to guarantee soundness of in-place update. This limitation has prompted research into static analysis and more sophisticated typing disciplines to determine when in-place update may be safely used, or to combine linear and non-linear schemes. Here we contribute to this direction by defining a new typing scheme that better approximates the semantic property of soundness of in-place update for a functional semantics. We begin from the observation that some data are used only in a read-only context, after which it may be safely re-used before being destroyed. Formalising the in-place update interpretation in a machine model semantics allows us to refine this observation, motivating three usage aspects apparent from the semantics that are used to annotate function argument types. The aspects are (1) used destructively, (2), used read-only but shared with result, and (3) used read-only and not shared with the result. The main novelty is aspect (2), which allows a linear value to be safely read and even aliased with a result of a function without being consumed. This novelty makes our type system more expressive than previous systems for functional languages in the literature. The system remains simple and intuitive, but it enjoys a strong soundness property whose proof is non-trivial. Moreover, our analysis features principal types and feasible type reconstruction, as shown in M. Konen'y (In TYPES 2002 workshop, Nijmegen, Proceedings, Springer-Verlag, 2003).

The advent of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) led to the standardisation of the first video codecs for interpersonal video communications, followed closely by the development of standards for the compression, storage and distribution of digital video in the PC environment, mainly targeted at CD-ROM storage. At the same time the second-generation digital wireless networks, and the third-generation networks being developed, have enough bandwidth to support digital video services. The radio propagation medium is a difficult environment in which to deploy low bit error rate, real time services such as video. The video coding standards designed for ISDN and storage applications, were targeted at low bit error rate levels, orders of magnitude lower than the typical bit error rates experienced on wireless networks. This thesis is concerned with the transmission of digital, compressed video over wireless networks. It investigates the behaviour of motion compensated, hybrid interframe DPCM/DCT video coding algorithms, which form the basis of current coding algorithms, in the presence of high bit error rates commonly found on digital wireless networks. A group of video codecs, based on the ITU-T H.261 standard, are developed which are robust to the burst errors experienced on radio channels. The radio link is simulated at low level, to generate typical error files that closely model real world situations, in a Rayleigh fading environment perturbed by co-channel interference, and on frequency selective channels which introduce inter symbol interference. Typical anti-multipath techniques, such as antenna diversity, are deployed to mitigate the effects of the channel. Link layer error control techniques are also investigated.

The thesis is concerned with the electron properties of single-polepiece magnetic electron lenses especially under conditions of extreme polepiece saturation. The electron optical properties are first analysed under conditions of high polepiece permeability. From this analysis, a general idea can be obtained of the important parameters that affect ultimate lens performance. In addition, useful information is obtained concerning the design of improved lenses operating under conditions of extreme polepiece saturation, for example at flux densities of the order of 10 Tesla. It is shown that in a single-polepiece lens , the position and shape of the lens exciting coil plays an important role. In particular, the maximum permissible current density in the windings, rather than the properties of the iron, can set a limit to lens performance. This factor was therefore investigated in some detail. The axial field distribution of a single-polepiece lens, unlike that of a conventional lens, is highly asymmetrical. There are therefore two possible physical arrangements of the lens with respect to the incoming electron beam. In general these two orientations will result in different aberration coefficients. This feature has also been investigated in some detail. Single-pole piece lenses are thus considerably more complicated electron- optically than conventional double polepiece lenses. In particular, the absence of the usual second polepiece causes most of the axial magnetic flux density distribution to lie outside the body of the lens. This can have many advantages in electron microscopy but it creates problems in calculating the magnetic field distribution. In particular, presently available computer programs are liable to be considerably in error when applied to such structures. It was therefore necessary to find independent ways of checking the field calculations. Furthermore, if the polepiece is allowed to saturate, much more calculation is involved since the field distribution becomes a non-linear function of the lens excitation. In searching for optimum lens designs, care was therefore taken to ensure that the coil was placed in the optimum position. If this condition is satisfied there seems to be no theoretical limit to the maximum flux density that can be attained at the polepiece tip. However , under iron saturation condition, some broadening of the axial field distribution will take place, thereby changing the lens aberrations . Extensive calculations were therefore made to find the minimum spherical and chromatic aberration coefficients . The focal properties of such lens designs are presented and compared with the best conventional double-polepiece lenses presently available.

We introduce a general matrix formulation for multiuser channels and analyse the special cases of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output channels, channels with interference and relay arrays under LDPC coding using methods developed for the statistical mechanics of disordered systems. We use the replica method to provide results for the typical overlaps of the original and recovered messages and discuss their implications. The results obtained are consistent with belief propagation and density evolution results but also complement them giving additional insights into the information dynamics of these channels with unexpected effects in some cases.

Golfers, coaches and researchers alike, have all keyed in on golf putting as an important aspect of overall golf performance. Of the three principle putting tasks (green reading, alignment and the putting action phase), the putting action phase has attracted the most attention from coaches, players and researchers alike. This phase includes the alignment of the club with the ball, the swing, and ball contact. A significant amount of research in this area has focused on measuring golfer’s vision strategies with eye tracking equipment. Unfortunately this research suffers from a number of shortcomings, which limit its usefulness. The purpose of this thesis was to address some of these shortcomings. The primary objective of this thesis was to re-evaluate golfer’s putting vision strategies using binocular eye tracking equipment and to define a new, optimal putting vision strategy which was associated with both higher skill and success. In order to facilitate this research, bespoke computer software was developed and validated, and new gaze behaviour criteria were defined. Additionally, the effects of training (habitual) and competition conditions on the putting vision strategy were examined, as was the effect of ocular dominance. Finally, methods for improving golfer’s binocular vision strategies are discussed, and a clinical plan for the optometric management of the golfer’s vision is presented. The clinical management plan includes the correction of fundamental aspects of golfers’ vision, including monocular refractive errors and binocular vision defects, as well as enhancement of their putting vision strategy, with the overall aim of improving performance on the golf course. This research has been undertaken in order to gain a better understanding of the human visual system and how it relates to the sport performance of golfers specifically. Ultimately, the analysis techniques and methods developed are applicable to the assessment of visual performance in all sports.

Accommodating Intraocular Lenses (IOLs), multifocal IOLs (MIOLs) and toric IOLs are designed to provide a greater level of spectacle independency post cataract surgery. All of these IOLs are reliant on the accurate calculation of intraocular lens power determined through reliable ocular biometry. A standardised defocus area metric and reading performance index metric were devised for the evaluation of the range of focus and the reading ability of subjects implanted with presbyopic correcting IOLs. The range of clear vision after implantation of an MIOL is extended by a second focal point; however, this results in the prevalence of dysphotopsia. A bespoke halometer was designed and validated to assess this photopic phenomenon. There is a lack of standardisation in the methods used for determining IOL orientation and thus rotation. A repeatable, objective method was developed to allow the accurate assessment of IOL rotation, which was used to determine the rotational and positional stability of a closed loop haptic IOL. A new commercially available biometry device was validated for use with subjects prior to cataract surgery. The optical low coherence reflectometry instrument proved to be a valid method for assessing ocular biometry and covered a wider range of ocular parameters in comparison with previous instruments. The advantages of MIOLs were shown to include an extended range of clear vision translating into greater reading ability. However, an increased prevalence of dysphotopsia was shown with a bespoke halometer, which was dependent on the MIOL optic design. Implantation of a single optic accommodating IOL did not improve reading ability but achieved high subjective ratings of near vision. The closed-loop haptic IOL displayed excellent rotational stability in the late period but relatively poor rotational stability in the early period post implantation. The orientation error was compounded by the high frequency of positional misalignment leading to an extensive overall misalignment of the IOL. This thesis demonstrates the functionality of new IOL lens designs and the importance of standardised testing methods, thus providing a greater understanding of the consequences of implanting these IOLs. Consequently, the findings of the thesis will influence future designs of IOLs and testing methods.

A record broadly tunable high-power external cavity InAs/GaAs quantum-dot diode laser with a tuning range of 202 nm (1122 nm-1324 nm) is demonstrated. A maximum output power of 480 mW and a side-mode suppression ratio greater than 45 dB are achieved in the central part of the tuning range. We exploit a number of strategies for enhancing the tuning range of external cavity quantum-dot lasers. Different waveguide designs, laser configurations and operation conditions (pump current and temperature) are investigated for optimization of output power and tunability. Optimal design for parameter estimation in Gaussian process regression models with input-dependent noise is examined. The motivation stems from the area of computer experiments, where computationally demanding simulators are approximated using Gaussian process emulators to act as statistical surrogates. In the case of stochastic simulators, which produce a random output for a given set of model inputs, repeated evaluations are useful, supporting the use of replicate observations in the experimental design. The findings are also applicable to the wider context of experimental design for Gaussian process regression and kriging. Designs are proposed with the aim of minimising the variance of the Gaussian process parameter estimates. A heteroscedastic Gaussian process model is presented which allows for an experimental design technique based on an extension of Fisher information to heteroscedastic models. It is empirically shown that the error of the approximation of the parameter variance by the inverse of the Fisher information is reduced as the number of replicated points is increased. Through a series of simulation experiments on both synthetic data and a systems biology stochastic simulator, optimal designs with replicate observations are shown to outperform space-filling designs both with and without replicate observations. Guidance is provided on best practice for optimal experimental design for stochastic response models. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Completing projects faster than normal is always a challenge as it often demands many paradigm shifts. Globalization opportunities and competition from private sectors and multinationals are forcing the management of public sector organizations in India's petroleum industry to take various aggressive strategies to maintain profitability. These projects are required to be completed sooner than with a typical schedule to remain competitive, get faster return on investment and give longer project life.

In the UK most psychology undergraduates are women, most finish their education with a bachelor's degree, most do not enter professional psychology, and competition to do so at 21+ is fierce. This all raises many questions - not least about the nature of the discipline itself and the purpose of university education. Although they have unique features, other European countries, are grappling with similar issues. They all have interesting and varied responses within a common broad framework. These variations tell us something about higher education, about vocational preparation, and about the shape and future of the discipline.
