Stratigraphic analysis of the southwestern quadrant of the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill: Incorporating recent borehole explorations and radiometric dating with previous investigations.

This report presents the results of stratigraphic analysis of the southwestern quadrant of the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill (CHRLF). My report was intended to incorporate the recent Area 8 borehole data into the pre-existing analyses. This analysis was conducted during the preparation of the Area 8 Hydrogeologic Report, but is my independent investigation and does not represent the opinion of UEC or their associates. The CHRLF, in Maple Valley, WA, south of Squak Mountain, is a municipal solid waste landfill that has been in operation since the 1960s. A network of borings, the product of previous investigations, exists for the study area. I utilized the compiled boring logs, previous investigations, and the recently acquired data to produce a series of interpretative cross-sections for the study area. I recognized 9 distinct stratigraphic units, including fill. My interpreted stratigraphic units are similar to those identified in previous investigations such as the Area 7 Hydrogeologic investigation (HDR Engineering and Associates, 2008). These units include pre-Olympia aged non-glacial alluvium, glacial alluvium, and glacial till. Additionally, younger, Vashon-aged deposits of glacial till, recessional outwash, recessional lacustrine, and ice-contact were observed. An isolated “till-like” deposit was observed below the Vashon till. This could possibly represent an older till as mapped by Sweet Edwards (1985) and Booth (1995). I cite the continuity of the lower contact of the Vashon till (Unit 5, Table 2) and the upper contact pre-Vashon non-glacial fluvial deposits (Unit 9, Table 2) as evidence that faults or other structural features do not offset the deposits in the study area. This conclusion supports the findings of the pre-existing body of work within the landfill property and the nearby Queen City Farms property.

Validation of self-reported cigarette smoking in a remote Australian Aboriginal community

Objective: To examine the relationship between self-reported tobacco smoking and urinary cotinine concentrations in the setting of a remote Aboriginal community. Methods: In a remote Northern Territory (NT) Aboriginal community the relationship between self-reported tobacco smoking and urinary cotinine concentrations was examined as part of a cross-sectional survey of cardiovascular risk factors. Current tobacco smoking was assessed as part of a questionnaire. The concentration of cotinine and cotinine/creatinine ratio (CCR) in a spot urine sample were used as a biochemical marker of nicotine exposure. Results: A total of 237 people took part in the survey, although completed questionnaires and urine results were available for 184 people. Current tobacco smoking was reported by 161 (69 [95% Cl 63 to 75]%) people, with higher rates among males (84/104, 81 [95% Cl 72 to 88]%) than females (77/129, 60 [95% Cl 51 to 68]%, p

Spreading and synchronization of intrinsic signals in visual cortex of macaque monkey evoked by a localized visual stimulus

Spatio-temporal maps of the occipital cortex of macaque monkeys were analyzed using optical imaging of intrinsic signals. The images obtained during localized visual stimulation (IS) were compared with the images obtained on presentation of a blank screen (IB). We first investigated spontaneous variations of the intrinsic signals by analyzing the 100 IBs for each of the three cortical areas. Slow periodical activation was observed in alternation over the cortical areas. Cross-correlation analysis indicated that synchronization of spontaneous activation only took place within each cortical area, but not between them. When a small, drifting grating (2degreesX2degrees) was presented on the fovea. a dark spot appeared in the optical image at the cortical representation of this retinal location. It spread bilaterally along the border between V1 and V2, continuing as a number of parallel dark bands covering a large area of the lateral surface of V1. Cross-correlation analysis showed that during visual stimulation the intrinsic signals over all of the three cortical areas were synchronized, with in-phase activation of V1 and V2 and anti-phase activation of V4 and V1/V2. Benthic microalgae in coral reef sediments of the southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The abundance and productivity of benthic microalgae in coral reef sediments are poorly known compared with other, more conspicuous (e.g. coral zooxanthellae, macroalgae) primary producers of coral reef habitats. A survey of the distribution, biomass, and productivity of benthic microalgae on a platform reef flat and in a cross-shelf transect in the southern Great Barrier Reef indicated that benthic microalgae are ubiquitous, abundant (up to 995.0 mg chlorophyll (chl) a m(-2)), and productive (up to 110 mg O-2 m(-2) h(-1)) components of the reef ecosystem. Concentrations of benthic microalgae, expressed as chlorophyll a per surface area, were approximately 100-fold greater than the integrated water column concentrations of microalgae throughout the region. Benthic microalgal biomass was greater on the shallow water platform reef than in the deeper waters of the cross-shelf transect. In both areas the benthic microalgal communities had a similar composition, dominated by pennate diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. Benthic microalgal populations were potentially nutrient-limited, based on responses to nitrogen and phosphorus enrichments in short-term (7-day) microcosm experiments. Benthic microalgal productivity, measured by O-2 evolution, indicated productive communities responsive to light and nutrient availability. The benthic microalgal concentrations observed (92-995 mg chl a m(-2)) were high relative to other reports, particularly compared with temperate regions. This abundance of productive plants in both reef and shelf sediments in the southern Great Barrier Reef suggests that benthic microalgae are key components of coral reef ecosystems.

Facilitating cross-organisational workflows with a workflow view approach

Interconnecting business processes across systems and organisations is considered to provide significant benefits, such as greater process transparency, higher degrees of integration, facilitation of communication, and consequently higher throughput in a given time interval. However, to achieve these benefits requires tackling constraints. In the context of this paper these are privacy-requirements of the involved workflows and their mutual dependencies. Workflow views are a promising conceptional approach to address the issue of privacy; however this approach requires addressing the issue of interdependencies between workflow view and adjacent private workflow. In this paper we focus on three aspects concerning the support for execution of cross-organisational workflows that have been modelled with a workflow view approach: (i) communication between the entities of a view-based workflow model, (ii) their impact on an extended workflow engine, and (iii) the design of a cross-organisational workflow architecture (CWA). We consider communication aspects in terms of state dependencies and control flow dependencies. We propose to tightly couple private workflow and workflow view with state dependencies, whilst to loosely couple workflow views with control flow dependencies. We introduce a Petri-Net-based state transition approach that binds states of private workflow tasks to their adjacent workflow view-task. On the basis of these communication aspects we develop a CWA for view-based cross-organisational workflow execution. Its concepts are valid for mediated and unmediated interactions and express no choice of a particular technology. Investigation into the diffusion of water into HEMA-co-MOEP hydrogels

Cross-linked homopolymers and copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA, and ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate, MOEP, have been synthesized, and the diffusion of water into these systems has been investigated. Only polymers with 0-20 mot % MOEP exhibited ideal swelling behavior as extensive fracturing occurred in the systems with greater than 20 mot % MOEP as the polymers began to swell during water sorption. Gravimetric studies were used in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging of the diffusion front to elucidate the diffusion mechanism for these systems. In the case of the cross-linked HEMA homopolymer gets, the water transport mechanism was determined to be concentration-independent Fickian diffusion. However, as the fraction of MOEP in the network increased, the transport mechanism became increasingly exponentially concentration-dependent but remained Fickian until the polymer consisted of 30 mot % MOEP where the water transport could no longer been described by Fickian diffusion.
